Seven college students were arrested under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) charges for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district.
According to sources, the students, who were studying at a private college, lived together in a rented room in the district’s Kuniyamuthur region. One of them befriended the minor through a social media app. The girl, a resident of Ukkadam area of the district, went to meet him but did not return home, prompting her family to file a missing person complaint with the police.
While authorities launched a search, the girl returned home on Monday. Upon questioning, she alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by the students. Based on her statement, the police arrested all seven and placed them under judicial remand.
Further investigations are underway.
State BJP Chief K Annamalai slammed the DMK in a post on X, saying, “The entire country was shaken by Nirbhaya. But, in Tamil Nadu, every day, women, including girls, students, female police officers, and female government officials, are completely unsafe. The DMK government has not moved a single finger to prevent drug trafficking or ensure the safety of women.”

The students wing of the AIADMK, too, took out a blindfolded protest in Chennai over deteriorating law and order in Tamil Nadu, particularly regarding crimes against women and children.
The protest was part of the party’s ‘Who is that, sir?’ campaign, launched in response to the Anna University sexual assault case.
AIADMK’s General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, in a post on X wrote, “My strong condemnation to the government of Mr. @mkstalin who is completely abandoning the safety of women and is obsessed with publicity.”
The ruling DMK, on the other hand, dismissed the AIADMK’s claims, stating that children are safe in schools.

The woman and her husband had been brought from Assam by the main accused to work at a brick manufacturing unit.
The couple later decided to quit the job and leave the workplace.
According to the complaint, after learning about their decision, the main accused allegedly brought two other men in an auto to prevent the couple from leaving. He also accused them of a payment-related issue and attempted to stop them from exiting the area.
The complaint further stated that the woman was taken in the auto to a secluded location, where she was allegedly gangraped, while her husband was assaulted.
A case has been registered against the three accused men in connection with the incident.
In another incident from November, a college student in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by three men near the city’s international airport after her friend was attacked. The incident prompted the formation of special police teams to track down the suspects.
Police reportedly shot and arrested the three accused after they attempted to flee, with all three taken to hospital with injuries.

Mumbai: A minor girl was allegedly raped by an 18-year-old man in a cafe in Latur, Maharashtra. According to the police, the girl was abducted and taken to the cafe where the incident occurred on December 4. Following the investigation, the police arrested the main accused and two persons who operated the cafe.
The girl belonged to the Dalit community, went missing, triggering tension. Her family approached the police, telling the latter about what happened. The police registered a case and launched an investigation. Following this, the officials traced the girl within hours, reported news agency PTI.
The main accused and two persons who operated the cafe were subsequently arrested and booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act), an official said on Tuesday.
The police on Tuesday also booked the owner of the premises, where the cafe was being operated, under section 21 (punishment for failure to report or record a case) of the POCSO Act.
The cafe owner had illegally created a secluded compartment near the kitchen area by charging extra money, offering private seating arrangements. Despite being aware of this unauthorised setup and its misuse, the premises owner allegedly ignored it and allowed the cafe owner to continue with the arrangement, the official said.
He also failed to report the matter to the police or other authorities concerned and is accused of deliberately suppressing information, the official added.

The horrific attack took place overnight from Monday into Tuesday after the married woman was waiting for transport to return home in Faridabad, near Delhi.
According to police, a van stopped and two young men lured the woman inside after promising to drop her home.
Instead, the vehicle was driven towards Gurgaon Road, where she was allegedly raped repeatedly.
The woman is believed to have been held inside the van for around two-and-a-half hours, during which time the attackers continued to assault her and threatened her when she tried to resist.
At around 3am, she was thrown out of the moving vehicle near Raja Chowk in SGM Nagar, suffering severe facial injuries. She was left bleeding heavily at the roadside.
The victim repeatedly tried to call her sister.
When her sister returned the call and realised what had happened, family members rushed to the scene and took the woman to hospital, where she was admitted in a critical condition.
Doctors later applied 10 to 12 stitches to her face.

While her condition is now stable, police said the woman remains in a state of shock and has not yet been able to give a formal statement.
In her complaint, the victim’s sister said the woman had called her the evening before the attack, at around 8.30pm, saying she had argued with her mother and was going to stay at a friend’s house.
She told her sister she would return home within three hours.
The woman, who has three children, is married but lives separately from her husband due to a domestic dispute.
Police confirmed that both suspects have been arrested and that the van used in the attack has been recovered. An investigation is ongoing.

A special POCSO court here on Friday convicted and sentenced a 24-year-old man and his married sister to life imprisonment over the rape of a 13-year-old girl in a five-year-old case, a case lawyer said.
Special Judge Divya Bhargav also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the accused, Rashid and his sister Shrimati Shakila, after holding them guilty under sections 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, and sections 5/6 of the POCSO Act, he said.
