[VIDEOS] Dawid Malan announces his retirement from international cricket [Post Updated #113]

The bowling in the first ten overs from England arguably cost them the game long before this.

England were lucky becouse Ireland should have got more and pluss they dropped a few catches.

The 5 run loss margin flatters England. It should have been a bigger loss than that. England performed dreadfully in the game and got away with the net run rate on this one.

They made it up in the end. The way IRE was going they should've scored 180+. But Malan wasting 37 balls pretty much sealed the deal especially with rain on the horizon. Malan was supposedly number 1 T20 batsman not so long ago.

I don’t know how he got to number 1.

He is better than he showed today though.

A beautifully measured hundred for Malan today in Adelaide against Australia.

2nd ODI ton for him and he is averaging well over 50 in this format in his 10th game.

T20 World Cup: England's Dawid Malan cried after learning he would miss final

England batter Dawid Malan says he cried after being told he was not playing in the T20 World Cup final.

The 35-year-old left-hander suffered a left groin tear in England's Super 12 match against Sri Lanka.

He missed the semi-final but passed all fitness tests the day before the showpiece game.

However, the decision was taken not to risk Malan or fast bowler Mark Wood, who was recovering from a back injury.

"We all have tough times in our careers," Malan said. "Not being able to play the final was probably one of the toughest days I've ever had as a cricketer. That's what sport's like - it's cruel sometimes.

"Understandably, the decision was taken not to risk Woody and me, even though we'd done what was needed. I had a few tears that night, you never know how many World Cup finals you're going to be a part of.

"If you're just not fit and not able to do what's required, it's probably easier to take than to pass a fitness test and still be in a situation where you're still at risk and you could still let the team down by pulling up the next day in the second over of the game chasing a ball.

"Mark and myself had a two-minute chat. We both were gutted and then said 'it's not about us any more, it's about what the team needed'. It's in the past. We've won the World Cup, that's all that matters."

Having proven his fitness, Malan returned and scored a fine century as a much-changed England side were beaten by six wickets in the first of three one-day internationals against Australia.

"To be fit and perform like I did, it's extremely satisfying after the disappointment of last week - disappointment but also the massive excitement and elation of winning that World Cup," he added.

"There's so much cricket coming up and I've got so much to play for still in my career. I still want to push myself into this squad and still want to be at the next T20 World Cup as well."

Brilliant innings and recovery - 104* for Malan

Changed the complexion of the game.

Iftikhar reminds me of Malan which is why I have been saying Ifti needs to bat up the order for us.

Atherton: Malan makes case for opening role

Sky Sports Cricket expert and former England captain Mike Atherton...

"I heard Jos Buttler after the last game say he was struggling with the format a bit and hadn't played that much cricket in the last year or two.

"As somebody who opens in T20 cricket the tempo and rhythm of 50-overs cricket just needed some adjusting to, but boy didn't he do well there?

"And Dawid Malan, that was really interesting because probably the one place in that 50-over batting line-up is that second opening position alongside Jonny Bairstow.

"Jason Roy has only had that one innings of late and Malan played superbly there."

Possibly the innings of his career today.

A pitch-perfect knock in difficult conditions.

Malan regularly plays in BPL. He is familiar with Bangladeshi conditions.

Without him, England probably would've lost today.

Dawid Malan was electric in England’s ODI series against New Zealand, being the highest run-scorer with 277 runs at an average of 92.33 and a strike-rate of 105.72. The batter, who spent 357 days at No.1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings earlier in his career, is placed at a career-best 13th place in the ODI Rankings.

During England vs Bangladesh, 7th Match of the ICC World Cup, Dawid Malan scored an excellent 50 of just 39 balls and is still on the crease looking comfortable. Fantastic innings from him.

Dawid Malan has scored a brilliant century against Bangladesh today. It was a masterclass of an innings showing patience and adaptability. excellent knock.

Not many teams were expecting him to produce such an innings but after today's innings, it won't be the same.

Some players are finding the pace of 50 over cricket awkward nowadays due to a rich diet of T20 cricket. No coincidence then for me that Malan has emerged as England’s best ODI player, one of the “slower scorers” or even “too slow” in T20s, but a simple run-a-ball strike rate in ODIs and batting 35ish of the overs is perfect.

Dawid Malan displayed a measured approach in reaching his half-century, taking 39 balls to carefully find the right moments for boundaries. This strategy, honed during his successful stint in the SA20, has translated well into the PSL, where he continued his impressive form. Malan's innings of 52 runs off 41 balls reflects his effective blend of patience and timely aggression in the dynamic T20 format.

He was way too slow. If Multan lose today, it will be because he ate too many balls.

Malan on charge against PZ in PSL 9. Second fifty for him in this year's PSL. Gone after playing a brisk knock of 52(25).

Got out for back to back ducks, got early in the innings two dangerous deliveries, but today Dawid Malan showed to which level he belongs in the T20 Format, scored fifty off 22 balls and the man for Multan Sultans in the chase as he entertained.

He also batted out of position.

Dawid Malan Announces Retirement From International Cricket

England cricketer Dawid Malan has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, concluding an outstanding career that includes 22 Test matches, 30 One-Day Internationals, and 62 T20 Internationals.

The elegant left-hander amassed 4,416 runs for his country across all formats.

“It has been an incredible journey since July 2017,” Malan said. “I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats.

“Cricket, like most sports, is an industry where almost everyone eventually retires wishing they had done that little bit more. Whether you’ve played ten Tests or 100, many step away regretting not playing just one more, scoring a few more runs, or winning more trophies.

“Right now, as I retire from international cricket, I can say I am genuinely satisfied. It has not been easy. It may be my nature, but for whatever reason, it has always seemed that I had something to prove and often felt as if I was playing for my place. The pressure goes with the territory, but it does take a mental and physical toll. Even so, I look back with pride on what I have been able to achieve.”

Malan is one of only two England men’s cricketers to have scored centuries in all three formats of the game; the other being Jos Buttler. He reached the pinnacle of the ICC T20 International batting rankings and represented England in two Ashes series. He was selected for one ICC World Cup and two ICC T20 World Cups, becoming a world champion with England in 2022.

In international cricket, Malan scored 32 fifties and eight centuries, including a standout Test innings of 140 against Australia in Perth in 2017.

“I am so grateful to so many people: to the coaches and staff of the various England teams, to everyone who helped and supported me along the way, and to all my England teammates over these seven years.

“None of this would have happened without the endless support of my parents. Lastly, I would like to thank my wife Claire for her love, unwavering support, and for looking after our two children and our home while I was so often on the road.”

Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, Rob Key, added:

“Dawid Malan retires after an excellent international career marked by resilience and determination.

“Early on, he had to fight for every opportunity, often facing some of the best teams in the world. His contributions were pivotal, particularly during the memorable World Cup victories in Australia, where he played an integral role in the team's success.

“His legacy will be remembered as one of tenacity and achievement on the international stage—traits any player would be extremely proud to have.”

It is becoming a trend in England cricket for players to announce their retirement after being snubbed from selection

Well he had a decent career. Was good in T20Is for England. I thought he deserved to play for England in the WT20 2024 given the conditions there. He was the accumulator they needed.

Good luck to him for his league career.

Tough love for them.

The funny thing is, it shows how high their standards are.

Malan is a terrific player but just does not fit their bazzball + aggressive brand of cricket lifestyle.

If this dude was in pakistan and he did this pcb would lick his boots to get him back whereas ecb says bye🤣

I think these guys been getting the tap on the shoulder to from the higher ups, he can at least explore other plans now

Yes, he would be the Test captain of Pakistan.

Ah I find it amusing imagining Malan being pampered and turning into a drama queen

Malan is still superior to every single one of our joke lot.

However the truth is he just doesn't fit in to their t20 side. I still think what he did is an overreaction.

Personally I still think he should be England's odi no 3

Dawid Malan is the joint fastest to 100 boundaries in T20Is among players from Test-playing nations. He reached the milestone in 18 innings. India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, Afghanistan’s Hazaratullah Zazai and former Australia skipper Aaron Finch have achieved the same feat.

When Malan romped up to his first T20I century in only his ninth innings of the career in Napier, New Zealand, he became the first non-opener to score a ton for England in the shortest format. In that game, Malan batted at number three and scored an unbeaten 103 off just 51 balls against hosts New Zealand. Livingstone is the only other non-opener to score a T20I ton for England

Tbh I think he had to have had a convo with Rob Key and they’ve made their feelings known to him, he’s into his late 30’s and there are far better prospects to invest in now. Off course in Pakistan he would just be getting started at this point and there would be plenty of Uncles in these parts drooling over Chacha Malan.

I just realised he's 36 lol. English players look so young.

But yeah if he's 36 then it makes sense. Unlike Asian players typically SENA retired early. We saw how much batting till 36+ had a toll on the likes of Pointing.

His age is deceiving because the lad has been a class player but the fact that England are moving on from such a performer who is fairly consistent, just shows their longer term thinking. I guess the available resources do help to. I think this is how it should be, outside some exceptions like Jimmy who arguably will be more difficult to replace guys North of 35 should be phased out in a strong set up

Tbf to Malan, he didn't need to retire. England was only moving on from him in t20 and frankly speaking he doesn't have a place as long as Butler, Salt, Jack's and bairstow are your top 4.

He was still their main odi representative. He chose to retire.

As for Anderson, Jimmy Anderson is an atg test bowler lol, no way they were going to replace him, whereas with Malan, you have better options and one heck of a talent pool in England.

Pakistan should be grateful to England, Players of the past like yousaf were so good because of county.

Good white ball cricketer. Speaks to England's batting depth that he was discarded. He'd be our mainstay batsman even at 36.

He played in the first PSL game staged in Pakistan which was the final in 2017, so he's had a special connection to Pakistan.

Hope he goes well.

Dawid Malan has signed up for HBL PSL season 10 Draft.

Which team you want him to go to??

I think Multan will pick him up.
