He entered international cricket in a blaze of glory with an excellent innings versus Bangladesh. There have been some flashes of brilliance but of late he has largely struggled and has now lost his central contract.

Was he a flash in the pan?
Is he worth sticking with?
What's gone wrong?
 
I was there when he played that innings against Bangladesh. He certainly struck the ball well and seemed promising . Maybe that’s why i retained faith in him .

I think his bowling is decent and he has bowled well in patches. I just feel that as an all rounder he lacks the batting required to really take a place as an all rounder . He has not played any innings of Note apart from two in test cricket .

Micky Arthur invested a lot of time in him and he was given a good run, so I won’t necessarily say he has not been given chances .

He can still deliver , but it’s a tricky slope for him at the moment .

Had plenty of opportunities - showed no improvement.
 
Flash in the pan. Cares more about his hair than cricket. That one innings vs Bangladesh in the warm ups is the only reason why he even had an international career.
 
If he takes stock, assesses where he is right now and works hard, could try and get back into the T20 side. He can then work his way back up again. Ball's in Faheem's court.
 
He never had the requisite talent to be more than bits and pieces cricketer and I called it Day 1
 
I don't even remember any flash ! There was one fifty in a warmup vs Bangladesh where there was a 30m boundary on one side, but his batting is atrocious.

For a guy with a FC batting average of 30, I see nothing in his strokeplay other than a series of ugly cross batted hacks.

His bowling looked okay in the UAE because of slow pitches where the ball doesn't easily come onto the bat, but on true surfaces he's cannon fodder.

It boils my blood whenever people throw his name around for squads - he's a poor man's Rana Naved and I'm insulting Naved by comparing him to Faheem.
 
His bowling is decent and good enough for an all rounder.

For his batting, he seemed to have the gift of timing and threatened that he had the potential to be decent. However he just hasn't kicked on or delivered at all. If he can follow the same path as Shadab and improve his batting, he could come back into contention. In particular, he needs to learn how to build an innings. Not just play the next shot.

He has the most potential of any pace all-rounder since Razzaq... which perhaps says more about the Pakistan talent (Anwar, Hammad Azam, Ammad Butt etc) than it does about Faheem.

Saj, there was never anything right in the first place with Faheem that went wrong. It wasnt like he was making headlines with his all round abilities and was winning games left, right and centre. He is a horrible batsman, OK fielder and a decent bowler who also lost his bowling confidence towards the end.
 
I’d argue that he’s actually quite a skillful seamer, especially on pitches with assistance. He has a role to play on green tops as a 4th seamer. Problem is his batting. He should have worked hard on his stroke play, which he did not.
We require a number 8 who can bowl 10-15 tight overs a day with wicket taking potential. Faheem also needed to show some gumption with the bat, which he has not so far. These days shadab is a good option for his batting, but his bowling is just not conducive to seaming wickets. Quite a conundrum for Pakistan. Need to make a horses for courses selection

Exactly.

He’s a decent SENA fourth seamer who needs to improve his batting more than his bowling.
 
His batting isnt good enough for him to be a 6--7 and thats what pakistan needs from an all rounder Its tailenderish at the moment and he isnt good enough as just a bowler to get in the team
 
It's indeed in the pan, but was there ever any flash? Compared to his FC stats, his International career so far has been disappointing.

I think, more than his cricket skills, Arthur was desperate to fit in a pace bowling all-rounder in to PCT who can hit a bit and back four bowlers adequately with a wicket here & there, which I think was a very good idea considering the then next two ICC events were in UK and PAK had a busy schedule of Test/ODI tours in SENA countries - Faheem just isn't good enough to serve the purpose. What might have worked for Faheem is that, his bowling is/was decent (I'll give him just pass for a 4th seemer outside Asia and 3rd seemer in Asia, backed by two specialist spinners) and had further potential considering his age, but it's that practice game innings which bluffed Arthur (& Inzi), who must have considered him potential enough to fit in the shoes left by A Razzak or Mahmud.

To his discredit, I would say the guy is lazy & must have acquired bad company - otherwise, considering his FC stats (for 6K runs!!) it was not impossible for him to improve batting to an acceptable level, then his bowling would have made it count. Even Hasan Ali has couple of ODI 50s & Yasir a Test 100, therefore it was possible. This summer if PAK indeed takes 25 players to UK, I believe Faheem might sneak in that squad which is most likely his last chance, otherwise he won't feature in PCT shirt much in future, if ever in Test.
 
Flash in the Pan. After all the hype and work given to him by Mudassar Nazar, he has failed to live up to expectation. His bowling is okay at best but batting is nowhere near the level of international cricket.
 
Wait three years on the bench and suddenly fans will call him the next Fawad Alam
 
Really don't see what was special in his bowling.

No particular pace, seam swing. And no standout 'T20 skills' like slower balls or good Yorkers either. Still wondering how he was leading wicket taker in PSL '18.

I must confess that I am losing patience with the lack of a fair go that Faheem Ashraf is being given in Test cricket.

Can we just look at the four Tests he has played?

TEST 1 - away in Ireland

Pakistan 310-9 declared (Faheem TOPSCORED WITH 83, Azhar Ali scored 4)
Ireland 130 all out (Faheem 5-2-18-1)
Ireland 339 all out (Faheem 18-3-51-0)

TEST 2 - away in England

England 184 all out (Faheem 9-2-28-1)
Pakistan 363 all out (Faheem 37, lifted Pakistan from 246-5 when Babar retired hurt to 318-6. Azhar scored 50)

Pakistan 66-1 (Azhar out for 4, Faheem did not bat)

Yamin is a better batsman, but his bowling isn't quick enough for Test level - he bowls in the low 120's. At least Faheem can sustain spells around 137-140K, which is quick enough.
 
Really had high hopes from this guy but the way his batting has regressed is shocking! I felt that he had a lot of potential to become a very effective bowling all-rounder, but he can't buy a run to save his life nowadays.

If anything, I'd put it down to a lazy attitude and lacking any willingness to put in hard work. He comes across as a simpleton who doesn't have high ambitions in life.

Quite well put. Faheem is a decent bowler with potential but cannot break into the side with this alone. He needs to aim for the vacant pace all rounder spot at number 8. His bowling is probably fine for the role but his batting needs to improve massively.

I would say he needs a FC average of around 30 before he gets back into the Pakistan side.

He can do it and some really hard work could get him there.

I agree about the Number 8 slot.

But he has a Test batting average of 23 and a top score of 83. I think he just needs to return to his previous batting level.
 
So far he's been a flash in the pan. His bowling is overall decent but it's his batting that needs massive improvement. The thing I'm kinda curious about is how he sees himself as a batsman. Has management assigned him the role of power hitter when he's actually not, or is he normally comfortable batting up the order given time and more deliveries to get himself settled? Maybe, like Shadab in the PSL, he needs to bat up the order in FC so that he can get a better feel for batting for longer patches.

I must admit that i am surprised at those numbers as they are not that bad. I am sure however that if we were to add the amount of batting failures Faheem has had in ODIs/T20s his average would be far worse.

Lets face it Faheem is not a test specialist. And most certainly is not good enough to keep a spot as a bowler alone. He needs to score more runs, simple as that.

Cant compare him to Azhar Ali who has been pathetic by any standards over the last 2 years.
 
He was in our last Test squad and will most probably go to the UK.

I too would rather go for Yamin, but Tests are the one format Faheem has held his own in so far.
 
Basically pakistan has to accept that he isn't an allrounder but he's a bowler who can bat, bhuvneshwar kumar avgs 23 in tests which goes upto 27 away from home but he is hardly called an allrounder. He is also twice the bowler this guy is.
Its better to choose Hassan ali over this guy as he surely has the potential to avg 20+ in tests and is also a better bowler.
If all you want is 20 runs per innings then why waste a bowling spot.

Yamin bowls 128-135kph consistently.

He was injured most of last season yet he took a 5-for on his comeback in the Quaid-e-Azam Final.
 
I feel like he should spend some time in domestic playing FC and List A cricket to truly work on his batting. And in domestic, he should come a little higher in the order too so he can really work on his batting because as frustrating as he is, there is still some upside. He has been decent in Tests but batting wise, he hasn't done anything note worthy in ODI's T20. Bowling has been decent overall but really poor leading to the WC where he is not getting wickets and going for plenty of runs.

His ODI bowling not including Zimbabwe & Hong Kong - 66.70 AVG 5.55 economy and only 10 wickets in 18 matches. It's extremely awful.

He should bat higher up defo and should start in the test matches were thier will be movement and may play 1 or 2 innings of note
 
Maddest selection I have ever seen. Brought in to be a batsman/batting allrounder at 8. When he has hardly any batting experience. He's a bowler who found he could bat/hit a bit. Probably the rawest talent I've seen too, looked like his bowling and batting were unrefined and was learning on the job. And then suddenly playing all 3 formats. I've also never seen a specialist no.8 batsman guy batted below shadab and hardly bowled.

Should have been drafted just in T20s. Should not have played ODIs let alone tests. Should have been allowed to develop his batting skills and bowling skills there and domestic. And been given full quota often. Even though he probably wasn't good enough for ODIs and tests, he was played as a passenger, hardly got a role, no proper chance to bat or bowl.

Maybe could have developed a decent hitter who could bowl from him. But should have done it in T20s. Annoyed me to no end when we played him in ODIs and tests in place of a batsman who could actually bat. Just made our team weaker and wasn't fair on him.

To answer the question in the OP — he will stick in the pan and will be hard to scrape him off, metaphorically speaking :)

He most certainly has the ability to seam, I don’t know if we are watching the same bowler. He seams it better than any front line pacer after Abbas, Shinwari, and Amir. He could teach a thing or two to Shaheen as well on seam as this is one of the few skills shaheen lacks.

Why not go for someone like an Aamer Yamin who has had decent success in domestics and the PSL as well.

Hasan Ali is a better seamer than Faheem.

Faheem is really good at yorkers and bouncers but that’s it

He don’t have that in between length :asif

Because Misbah has already systematically replaced every player in his 20’s with someone in his 30’s.

And Yamin is 30 in a month’s time.
 
I feel he deserves another chance... he has been good in Tests.

Who says hes a batting all rounder ?.if hes a specialist batesman why would he bat at number 8 makes no sense so technically speaking his a bowling all rounder.

He was decent enough in tests average of 26 as bowler and 23 in tests better than razaq stats we also draw that series against england.you cant develop skills in t20s !

Cant compare shinwari and amir as they are swing bowlers who look for Swing but hassan ali you can compare him to him

Any sports team - apart from an ATG team - needs to have 6 or 7 guys in their twenties and no more than 4 or 5 guys in their teens and twenties.

Misbah dumped every player in his twenties apart from Babar and brought in only one more - Rizwan.

He basically dismantled a developing team and glued together a combination of geriatrics and kids.

From Arthur’s last Test to Misbah’s first:
Haris Sohail replaced Imam, and averaged 7.59 across an entire tour.
Azhar remained in spite of averaging 12.12 away the last two years.
Asad Shafiq remained.
Yasir Shah replaced Shadab Khan.
Imran Khan replaced Faheem Ashraf.

Not a Misbah fan by any means but Imam, Shadab & Faheem are all still in the setup/squad. And Haris in the XI instead of Imam (who himself has a very poor Test record thus far) makes perfect sense, in spite of the former flopping that tour.

You're really cherry-picking at this point... in addition to everything [MENTION=100918]Square Drive[/MENTION] just said, squads change condition-wise and both Faheem and Shadab are still in the loop. Also, interesting that you would cherry pick that very last test, because Mickey Arthur played Yasir Shah in 2/3 of those tests in South Africa. :)

The problem is that Misbah seems to put eleven players into his eleven rather than building a team.

Building a team is a long-term process.

I think you need to pick seven players aged 20-28 as the core of your team.

Then add four players of whom one can be in their teens and one can be over 32, but the rest must be 29-31.

So for Pakistan that would be:

Core Test players aged 20-28
Babar Azam
Mohammad Rizwan
Sami Aslam
Shadab Khan
Faheem Ashraf (SENA) / Zafar Gohar (Asia)
Ehsan Adil (SENA) / Sajid Khan (Asia)
Shaheen Shah Afridi

One permitted teenager
Naseem Shah

One permitted player over 32
Abid Ali
(Instead of Azhar Ali or Asad Shafiq)

Two players in the range 29-31
Shan Masood
Mohammad Abbas

That would prevent ever having the sort of drop off you got when Younis and Misbah exited simultaneously.

Yes, and Shadab took more wickets in that Test than Yasir did in two (or two in Australia).
 
[MENTION=132916]Junaids[/MENTION] fixation with Faheem Ashraf being some kind of effective underdog really is something else. It's all well and good to throw stats around, but it's also important to use the qualitative 'eye test to make a (interim) judgement on a player.

Faheem Ashraf, in both red and white ball cricket, is at best a functional bowler, where his wickets largely come from mental batting lapses rather than game breaking skill on Faheem's part.

Now this is completely fine for a fourth seamer in a test line up, however his batting has to be dependable.

He has to take that responsibility. However, watching his batting, there's a clear element of 'chancing' rather than assuredness in his play. THAT is not dependable for the role he occupies I.e. the No.7 position. He absolutely can't as a no.8 because his bowling does not merit it, despite how the stats look like.

If he went away for a couple of seasons and really worked on his batting, tobthe point that he becomes a guy who gives you true stickability at No.7, fair enough. We've had people like Shoaib Malik greatly improve their batting in their early years, so Faheem can absolutely get there as well. But he is far from that place right now
 
For an allrounder, his bowling is acceptable but his batting is shameful. just a ball towards hi rib-cage and higher and he is done duck

Feel for Aamir Yamin, he is equal on bowling front and miles better batsman than Faheem.. had he been given these many chances, he would have improved a lot as well.

Yamin's passion and eagerness is miles ahead too... the guy is 1000% committed to the game where as Faheem is more abt his hair and friendships (which seem to have carried him this far)

He can't bat

It is like Wahab Riaz or Hasan Ali being called ARs(they have done more with the bat in white ball cricket)
 
His bowling is decent enough. His batting is not showing signs of improving nor delivering which is the real worry
 
Faheem has shown promises but has also been highly inconsistent. He has been quite average overall.

He should take inspiration from Stokes. Maybe in two or three years time he could become our Stokes. :yk
 
Faheem cant bat and his bowling is not good enough to earn him a place as a specialist bowler.
His bowling deceives us all as it's more than decent for an all rounder - but we forget his batting is on par with most number 10s and 11s in the world.

Feel for Aamir Yamin, he is equal on bowling front and miles better batsman than Faheem.. had he been given these many chances, he would have improved a lot as well.

Yamin's passion and eagerness is miles ahead too... the guy is 1000% committed to the game where as Faheem is more abt his hair and friendships (which seem to have carried him this far)

Indeed Yamin showed more promise than this guy ... But I always see that Pakistan used back players with less talented and ability to the core until they fail drastically and disappear but not offer the same backing to those who has talent.

Hammad Azam, Ehsan Adil, Aamer Yamin, Amad butt were not given chance and backed.

Shan masood, Ahmed shehzad, being backed.
Sami aslam, not backed even after a good show. Failed in ODIs and discarded from test cricket

Azhar Ali, Asad shafiq being backed
Umar amin, Umar Akmal, Haris Sohail, Maqsood were not backed

Now again Hasnain taken to the CWC as water boy and Usman shinwari who played for two years won matches for Pak not backed. Reduced the squad to 14 instead of 15 by having Hasnain in there.


This guy Faheem was not an u19 or domestic sensation to begin with.. but when MA wants a medium pace bowling all rounder faheem was given the chance. MA himself was a coach for KK in PSL where he can scout for talents ...

The idea Umar Akmal wasn't backed is absurd. He played well over 100 ODIs and made a return to T20s last year vs Sri Lanka when he had no business making the squad.

Maqsood is nothing more than a flat footed hack. His fitness is poor and hasn't lit up domestic cricket to justify a recall.

I agree on the wider point though - Pakistan selection policy is built on liking and disliking. Golden boy Asad Shafiq has never been dropped while Azhar Ali despite declining form for 2.5 years was awarded Test captaincy.
 
Hopeless with the bat as ever, but beautiful bowling. As well as the wickets just look at those economy rates! :bow:

I don't understand how Abbas is being considered in preference to Faheem.

Just compare what they have done in this match - with Faheem bowling to better batsmen!

I think, you are unfair to Abbas - using manipulative data once more. Let's broaden our horizon a little, just by a week and include the other practice game as well.

Now that reads
Abbas: 20-9-42-3 & 15-8-20-1 = 35-17-62-4
Faheem: 16-5-49-0 & 18-0-74-1 = 34 - 5 - 123 - 1

And, three of Abbas's four wickets were Shan, Babar & Shan; Faheem's only wicket was the kid Haider.

I hope, you can understand now better why Abbas is considered in preference to Faheem, not to mention Abbas actually out scored the coveted all-rounder with bat .... and we won't bring past records in UK for this one - that's inconvenience.

It's difficult to promote almost a nothing cricketer like Faheem, but almost impossible if it's at the cost of a bowler averaging around 20 for his 75 wickets.

Seems like its pot luck for him as he is named in the 20 for the Test series vs England.
 
Not even a flash. Only got noticed due to one inning in a warm up match against bangladesh.
A t20 league player. Not convinced if he works hard on his batting or bowling.
