[VIDEOS] Glenn Maxwell's record-breaking double century (201*) at the ICC World Cup 2023: The Greatest ODI Knock in History, ever?

Was Glenn Maxwell's 208* in ICC World Cup 2023 the greatest ODI innings of all time?

One life to be honest. Mujeeb's catch. The fielder didn't even get to the first catch and LBW was not even umpires call. U are exaggerating
Its called luck. he came out on the hatrik ball, missed catch on the lofted shot, dilly dolly drop catch. And that LBW looked plumb (Indians tampered with Hawkeye again  )

But this has to be GOAT innings chasing with one leg :salute

Maxwell and Klassen are spin beasts. So going in with 4 spinners had element of risk. THey almost seemed to have got it covered.

The captaincy today from AFG skipper was beyond rationality he just dragged it knowing the inevitable will happen, he was waiting for chances rather than trying to create how can you let Cummins play 68 deliveries without troubling him really amateur stuff

Never count out Australia… this is greater than Kapil’s 175. Greatest WC knock of all time. Greatest ODI innings ever period.

People will say “oh it was just AFG”, yes, it was. Being 91/7, and literally winning the game single-handedly from there to 293/7.

Congrats. Nobody really paid attention to Maxwell anymore as a batsman… and then he does this.

It was a great knock. For me in the top 5 of all time. Kapil, Gibbs, Maxwell are the names that come to mind.

Many pros and cons of each innings.

Kapil and Maxwell played against (comparatively) weaker teams. Gibbs played a rampaging Australia.

Kapil and Maxwell did in in WCs. But Gibbs was a bilateral.

Kapil’s innings was part of a WC winning campaign.

Kapil came in at 17/5, Maxwell 70/5/.

Maxwell hit a double. The other two didn’t.

Maxwell had a few lives, one which was a ridiculous drop. Don’t know about the other two.

Maxwell was barely able to move for large parts of his innings. It was incredible to watch him hit sixes and fours while standing still, sometimes on one leg. Unable to run. Cramping repeatedly.

I think this shades it for me as the greatest innings, but only if Australia goes on to win the WC later.

If not, it can be discussed again.

Why would Indians do that? I thought we supplied them balls from our special crate, gave them motivational lecture, built pitch according their preference and goodness knows what else.

A gap of 40 years Kapil's and Maxie's . ODIs are extended T20s these days. Maxie already got a 40 ball 100 this season. No surprise he can do it again. Next match may be Klassen or Miller or Markram.

Flat pitch or not, it was the first time a team had conceded 400+ in ODIs and in 2006, 290-300 was a massive total.

It would be equivalent to a team chasing 550+ in ODIs today if not 600.

Gibbs scored 175 in 31 overs in 2006 which is unthinkable even in 2023.

This innings runs it very close but due to aforementioned reasons, I would still pick the Gibbs innings by a nose.
Bro this guy batted alone. He faced the hattrick ball, he had cramps and had no foot work. He batted alone

Instead of Hawkeye they should instead check how it looked to you I guess

Maxwell showed today that footwork in LOIs is overrated 😎 Just stand and deliver! The best innings I have watched at least.

Feel sorry for Mujeeb, but he drops way too many simple cathes, saw this in Asia cup as well. And to make it worse Maxwell took him to the cleaners in that winning over.

Pat Cummins speaking in his post game presser after the victory against Afghanistan

[Reporter:]

Is that the greatest one-day innings you've seen by an Aussie? Do we see Glenn playing the next game considering the struggling?

[Pat Cummins:]

I think that's the greatest ODI innings. I mean I've ever seen it's probably the greatest ODI innings ever. Yeah, we're just chatting about it, all the players and we’ve decided it's one of those days where you just go, I was there in the stadium the day Glenn Maxwell chased down that total by himself. Yeah, I'm sure he’ll be fine. He was cramping but I think you saw out there how much he loves playing for Australia and do anything to play. So, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Guys this thread is to celebrate the genius of Maxwell

Keep your other arguments off it

This type of knock is played once in a century at one stage Aus were 0.3% to win, just heck of a game, another lesson for ECB who were trying to lure Jonathan Trott
I don't think this takes the sheen off the good work he has done for the afghans, just came up against a force of nature today.
Any big team would benefit greatly from his knowhow.

His interview afterwards

Even he doesn’t rate this as his greatest ever knock. It was all too easy for him.

A goat level knock is like the one Steve Waugh played in the 1999 semi final, or the one Stokes played in the 2019 final.

Maxwell isn’t going to be fussed about this.

Chinnaswamy, Modi stadium, Wankhede - this edition Delhi knocks have to be taken with a pinch of salt. You can just keep swinging through the line pace or spin. Bowling can be thankless under lights after 20 overs. You should do all the damage before that.

Here are details of all the records that glenn maxwell broke in his amazing innings against Afghanistan in world cup 2023.

Glenn Maxwell played arguably one of the finest ODI knocks of all time against Afghanistan, scoring an unbeaten 201 in 128 balls, battling cramps and extreme humidity to help Australia into the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup.

Australia were reduced to 91-7 in their pursuit of 292 against Afghanistan, which become the highest ODI run chase at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Maxwell, who was given two lifelines and started walking after an lbw appeal, which was reversed by the DRS, then went on to play a record-shattering knock, scoring 69 percent of the team’s runs himself.

He also became the first batter to score a double ton in a run chase, with the previous 10 batters all making 200 or more batting first. The previous best score in the second innings of a men’s ODI was 193 by Fakhar Zaman against South Africa two years ago.

Maxwell was the first Australia batter to make a men’s ODI double ton, ending with the highest individual score by a player from his country. He surpassed Shane Watson’s 185*, which had been scored in 2011 against Bangladesh.

It was also the first time that a non-opener scored 200 or more in an ODI innings, making it the highest individual score by a player batting at No.3 or below. It was also only the third time that a batter has made a World Cup double-century, with Chris Gayle (215) and Martin Guptill (237*) having achieved the feat in 2015.

Yes. For me, it is the greatest ODI innings ever played, greater than the Gibbs 175.

It came in a World Cup where Australia's progression to the semi-finals was still not guaranteed. So it wasn't a dead rubber knock. Also, he won the match single-handedly. Maxi's innings would not have gotten the same recognition had there been another batter who scored 70 odd. To be reduced to 91/7 needing 201 runs with the tail and to score 70% of the team runs is superhuman.

Gibbs 175 was a trailblazer kind of innings where 434 was a score unheard of during those times. However, Gibbs didn't do all of that alone. Greame Smith played an equally freak of an innings at the top which made the job of Gibbs a lot easier. Also, Gibbs got out when the team still required more than 130 runs. So Gibbs while having played an iconic innings, didn't actually finish the job and the wheels could have come off South African batting which would've rendered his innings worthless.

Whenever you talk about GOAT innings, you will find players not out at the end of it all. Lara 153 against Australia was heralded as the greatest test innings of all time because he did it all by himself and saw the team through. Same with Kusal Perera against South Africa.

Maxwell scored 179 runs out of the remaining 201 runs required when Starc got out. And did it completely with the tail.

For me there is simply no comparison here. Maxwell has just made the impossible possible.

It's like very few understand how the level of opposition is a big factor in rating an innings,
Level of opposition is secondary, game situation is primary.

It is likely every fan of cricket thought Afghanistan would win today, but the one-legged miracle Max had other ideas.

Absolutely, the greatest ODI inning EVER, and most likely for very long time in future also.

not really, you could still see Aus getting out of it because Afghanistan are still considered minnows with single digit wins against top nations.

Don't think they've ever beaten some of the top teams. Including Aus.

Is this the ground Bracewell destroyed you guys after you had knocked over our top order?

That was chinnaswamy stadium. That is another miracle ground. Mohali is also a ground where it is hard to defend scores. There was one match Australia chasing 359 were 271/5. Maxie gone/Handscome gone. They had 8.5 overs 88 runs needed. They finished the match in 6.3 overs with heavy dew. Ashton Turner 84 in 43 balls. NEver heard of him again. Similarly Yusuf pathan smashed 123 in 96 balls to pull off a miracle That was also at Bengaluru. Back in 2010. That too with just one ball. Not two new balls. All the miraculous performances under lights are common in these grounds. Once dew forms no matter how good the bowling is they will travel. So you have to land the punch before that. That is where Afghanistan let themselvesl down. Dropping dollies of Maxwell.

Gibbs 175 still the greatest

This is probably best WC inns of all time. Given match situation and injury limitations will rank over Kapil 175 and Ponting/Gully/Viv final centuries

Catches win matches. Great innings. Be careful when you bowl spin to maxy

Does the ball fly? Felt like Maxwell wasn't putting much in and the ball was ending up in the stands.

Maxwell has played another terrific knock from 70/5 situation chasing 310 wherein Alex Carey also supported him with a hundred in 2019 vs England. He is definitely an Australian great and will join the likes of Symonds, Bevan, Hussey and Watson among the elite white ball cricketers that Australia have produced.

Does the ball fly? Felt like Maxwell wasn't putting much in and the ball was ending up in the stands.

Pitch is a belter usually. Ball just pings off the bat. Slightly smaller boundaries on the side. Always a high scoring venue. having said it is crap bowling to allow someone who could not move his feet even an inch to hit six at will. Almost every ball right in the arc.

I still cannot believe AFG allowed Maxwell to score 200 and Cummins sleeping at 12 in 68 deliveries, this has to be the bizarre and most one sided period in cricket history even more than Pak 39/6 in Karachi 06, Pathan having hattrick.

Unbelievable. I have never seen anything like this just like my 1.5 billion countrymen.
Kohli or Rohit can score another 2-3 centuries but India is not getting over what Maxwell did. Mark my words - He will achieve a demi-god status in India like AB Devilliers. This World Cup has been pretty boring due to one-sided matches resulting from India's dominance, the continuance of Saffer's inability to chase, and Pakistan being predictably unpredictable. Fakhar then came in and lit a fire and just when I thought this was the best we could get from this World Cup, Maxwell came in and played a once-in-a-lifetime inning. It is not going to get any better than this. Stop the World Cup immediately and hand over the trophy to Maxwell(not Australia). Declare him as the individual winner and deprecate the ODI format once and for all signing off on a high.

I would say this Glen Maxwells' innings is the second best greatest ODI knock of all time and if Australia wins the WC I would say it would have eclipsed the greatest ever ODI innings of Kapil DEV's 175

Imagine the confidence Australia are going to get from this game, they've salvaged several close matches now .. this one, vs SL and vs NZ. That baptism by fire will stand them good in the semis.

Couple of records were made yesterday by Maxwell while he saved his team from the jaws of defeat against Afghanistan. What a fabulous innings that was while chasing.

No debate.

This was the best ODI, WC, and Doible Century innings.

Tendulkar with all the might of BCCI couldn’t manufacture something like this.
Viv Richards has done a similar feat against England in 1984 (not in WC, test match) when WI were down for 70 and odd for 8 wickets. He with Holding on other end scored 189 and won that match.

It didn't look plumb. The first thing that came into my mind when I saw that appeal was "Height, may be". It was a long stride towards the ball and that ball has every chance of going over.

He was the batter who was facing the lbw decision?
Damn, i forgot it was him.

So when the lbw decision came up on screen, he started walking and zampa started to walk down the stairs. But as soon as the ball tracking showed it was missing, both turned back.

I would say this Glen Maxwells' innings is the second best greatest ODI knock of all time and if Australia wins the WC I would say it would have eclipsed the greatest ever ODI innings of Kapil DEV's 175

By some distance. Given what we have seen at the Wankhede over the years under lights it is not at impossible. Guys like James Faulkner, Bracewell, Ashton Turner have all played some unbelievable ODI innings under lights. Remember Valthathy guy, Manvinder Bisla .. suddenly all bowlers become impotent under lights. So many times we have seen these kind of knocks. If you look at how common freak innings under lights especially at stadiums like Wankhede, Chinnaswamy this is extremely common. Just that with a bit of luck Maxwell played a little further albeit against a clueless bowling attack.

here is another on a tricky pitch Kapil against West indies.

Ponting backs Maxwell heroics to inspire Australia to World Cup glory

Australia great Ricky Ponting believes his former side will obtain great belief from Glenn Maxwell’s stunning innings against Afghanistan and that it could prove pivotal in their quest for a sixth ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title.

Maxwell overcame severe cramps and a back spasm to smash an unbeaten double-century against Afghanistan on Tuesday that ensured Australia will once again feature in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

It was a knock of immense quality from Maxwell, with Ponting revealing after the match that the innings was the best he can remember.

"I have been around a lot of games playing and calling and I have never seen anything like that, and I'll be very surprised if I see anything like that ever again,” Ponting exclaimed.

"It was the most remarkable thing you've probably ever seen in cricket.

"Ben Stokes’ Test innings to win it (third Ashes Test in 2019) at Headingley was something that I had never seen before and I think this one goes past that just for the sheer enormity of what it means for the Australian cricket team making the World Cup semi-finals."

The victory was Australia’s sixth on the trot at the World Cup and now means the five-time champions will meet South Africa in a cut-throat semi-final next week for a place in the tournament decider.

Ponting thinks Maxwell's heroics against Afghanistan might just prove the catalyst for Australia to continue their winning run, and provide them with the belief that they can go on and win another World Cup title.

"All the great teams that I've played with and all the great teams that I've been around have always had that belief that they can win from anywhere, and literally anywhere, even World Cup campaigns that I played in," Ponting said.

"We had games where we probably shouldn't have won, but someone was there with that belief to put their hand up and win the game.

"And that's what I talk about with Australia in World Cups.

"They've got this knack of being able to just win the big moments and today was a huge moment as they qualify for the World Cup semi-finals now and hopefully onwards and upwards for them."

What an innings
All the years of potential and what ifs coming together into the player we always thought he was
Not sure why he can't do this every match and not just win against the minnows

Their problem is not batting. Their problem is bowling. The way Afghans treated Starc/Cummins in the end overs like roadside trundlers was not really amusing from Australian perspective.

Would love to see Shadab bowling to Maxwell
Actually Maxwell has a known weakness against leg spinners. Klassen is the boss of leggies. He is wicked against half trackers. IT doesn't even bave to be genuine half tracker. Even remotely short he can deposit in the midwicket stand.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that Afghanistan bowlers made life easy for an injured Maxwell by bowling him in the slogging zone.

"Afghanistan bowled too straight to Maxwell, should have bowled at the 7th stump because he was injured and could not reach the ball," Ganguly told Kolkata TV.

Ganguly said while Afghanistan batters failed to capitalise, especially when Australia were 91/7, Maxwell's knock is the greatest ODI innings of all time.

"Ajay Jadeja must be crying. They bowled too much into his pads. He was only standing and slogging. They had to bowl wide. Don't want to take anything away from Maxwell. Probably the Greatest ODI innings you'll see," he added.

Some of the most seriously dumb bowling i have seen. They had a golden chance to create history. Instead of pausing the game and coming up with strategy their bowling strategy got worse and worse
