Its called luck. he came out on the hatrik ball, missed catch on the lofted shot, dilly dolly drop catch. And that LBW looked plumb (Indians tampered with Hawkeye againOne life to be honest. Mujeeb's catch. The fielder didn't even get to the first catch and LBW was not even umpires call. U are exaggerating
Very good even great but not sure the greatest ever.A very good knock when Aus looked done and dusted. Yes, he got chances, but that's part of the game.
Yah. In hindsight, going with 4 spinners was not good especially Mujeeb.Maxwell and Klassen are spin beasts. So going in with 4 spinners had element of risk. THey almost seemed to have got it covered.
NO, no the greatest for me. Afghanistan simply gave away after he started hitting and he kept hitting.Very good even great but not sure the greatest ever.
Why would Indians do that? I thought we supplied them balls from our special crate, gave them motivational lecture, built pitch according their preference and goodness knows what else. Its called luck. he came out on the hatrik ball, missed catch on the lofted shot, dilly dolly drop catch. And that LBW looked plumb (Indians tampered with Hawkeye again)
But this has to be GOAT innings chasing with one leg![]()
It was a great knock. For me in the top 5 of all time. Kapil, Gibbs, Maxwell are the names that come to mind.
Many pros and cons of each innings.
Kapil and Maxwell played against (comparatively) weaker teams. Gibbs played a rampaging Australia.
Kapil and Maxwell did in in WCs. But Gibbs was a bilateral.
Kapil’s innings was part of a WC winning campaign.
Kapil came in at 17/5, Maxwell 70/5/.
Maxwell hit a double. The other two didn’t.
Maxwell was barely able to move for large parts of his innings. It was incredible to watch him hit sixes and fours while standing still, sometimes on one leg. Unable to run. Cramping repeatedly.
I think this shades it for me as the greatest innings, but only if Australia goes on to win the WC later.
If not, it can be discussed again.
Bro this guy batted alone. He faced the hattrick ball, he had cramps and had no foot work. He batted aloneFlat pitch or not, it was the first time a team had conceded 400+ in ODIs and in 2006, 290-300 was a massive total.
It would be equivalent to a team chasing 550+ in ODIs today if not 600.
Gibbs scored 175 in 31 overs in 2006 which is unthinkable even in 2023.
This innings runs it very close but due to aforementioned reasons, I would still pick the Gibbs innings by a nose.
Instead of Hawkeye they should instead check how it looked to you I guessIts called luck. he came out on the hatrik ball, missed catch on the lofted shot, dilly dolly drop catch. And that LBW looked plumb (Indians tampered with Hawkeye again)

I don't think this takes the sheen off the good work he has done for the afghans, just came up against a force of nature today. This type of knock is played once in a century at one stage Aus were 0.3% to win, just heck of a game, another lesson for ECB who were trying to lure Jonathan Trott
Chinnaswamy, Modi stadium, Wankhede - this edition Delhi knocks have to be taken with a pinch of salt. You can just keep swinging through the line pace or spin. Bowling can be thankless under lights after 20 overs. You should do all the damage before that. His interview afterwards
Even he doesn’t rate this as his greatest ever knock. It was all too easy for him.
A goat level knock is like the one Steve Waugh played in the 1999 semi final, or the one Stokes played in the 2019 final.
Maxwell isn’t going to be fussed about this.
It's like very few understand how the level of opposition is a big factor in rating an innings,Very good even great but not sure the greatest ever.
Level of opposition is secondary, game situation is primary. It's like very few understand how the level of opposition is a big factor in rating an innings,
not really, you could still see Aus getting out of it because Afghanistan are still considered minnows with single digit wins against top nations.Level of opposition is secondary, game situation is primary.
It is likely every fan of cricket thought Afghanistan would win today, but the one-legged miracle Max had other ideas.
Is this the ground Bracewell destroyed you guys after you had knocked over our top order?Chinnaswamy, Modi stadium, Wankhede - this edition Delhi knocks have to be taken with a pinch of salt. That was chinnaswamy stadium. That is another miracle ground. Mohali is also a ground where it is hard to defend scores. There was one match Australia chasing 359 were 271/5. Maxie gone/Handscome gone. They had 8.5 overs 88 runs needed. They finished the match in 6.3 overs with heavy dew. Ashton Turner 84 in 43 balls. NEver heard of him again. Similarly Yusuf pathan smashed 123 in 96 balls to pull off a miracle That was also at Bengaluru. Back in 2010. That too with just one ball. Not two new balls. All the miraculous performances under lights are common in these grounds. Once dew forms no matter how good the bowling is they will travel. So you have to land the punch before that. That is where Afghanistan let themselvesl down. Dropping dollies of Maxwell. Is this the ground Bracewell destroyed you guys after you had knocked over our top order?
Does the ball fly? Felt like Maxwell wasn't putting much in and the ball was ending up in the stands. That was chinnaswamy stadium. That is another miracle ground. It is impossible to play a chanceless innings in such circumstances.Even Maxi acknowledged it was not a chanceless innings
Viv Richards has done a similar feat against England in 1984 (not in WC, test match) when WI were down for 70 and odd for 8 wickets. He with Holding on other end scored 189 and won that match. No debate.
This was the best ODI, WC, and Doible Century innings.
Tendulkar with all the might of BCCI couldn’t manufacture something like this.
Its called luck. he came out on the hatrik ball, missed catch on the lofted shot, dilly dolly drop catch. And that LBW looked plumb (Indians tampered with Hawkeye again)

I would say this Glen Maxwells' innings is the second best greatest ODI knock of all time and if Australia wins the WC I would say it would have eclipsed the greatest ever ODI innings of Kapil DEV's 175

Their problem is not batting. Their problem is bowling. The way Afghans treated Starc/Cummins in the end overs like roadside trundlers was not really amusing from Australian perspective.Ponting backs Maxwell heroics to inspire Australia to World Cup glory
Australia great Ricky Ponting believes his former side will obtain great belief from Glenn Maxwell’s stunning innings against Afghanistan and that it could prove pivotal in their quest for a sixth ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title.
Maxwell overcame severe cramps and a back spasm to smash an unbeaten double-century against Afghanistan on Tuesday that ensured Australia will once again feature in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
It was a knock of immense quality from Maxwell, with Ponting revealing after the match that the innings was the best he can remember.
"I have been around a lot of games playing and calling and I have never seen anything like that, and I'll be very surprised if I see anything like that ever again,” Ponting exclaimed.
"It was the most remarkable thing you've probably ever seen in cricket.
"Ben Stokes’ Test innings to win it (third Ashes Test in 2019) at Headingley was something that I had never seen before and I think this one goes past that just for the sheer enormity of what it means for the Australian cricket team making the World Cup semi-finals."
The victory was Australia’s sixth on the trot at the World Cup and now means the five-time champions will meet South Africa in a cut-throat semi-final next week for a place in the tournament decider.
Ponting thinks Maxwell's heroics against Afghanistan might just prove the catalyst for Australia to continue their winning run, and provide them with the belief that they can go on and win another World Cup title.
"All the great teams that I've played with and all the great teams that I've been around have always had that belief that they can win from anywhere, and literally anywhere, even World Cup campaigns that I played in," Ponting said.
"We had games where we probably shouldn't have won, but someone was there with that belief to put their hand up and win the game.
"And that's what I talk about with Australia in World Cups.
"They've got this knack of being able to just win the big moments and today was a huge moment as they qualify for the World Cup semi-finals now and hopefully onwards and upwards for them."

Actually Maxwell has a known weakness against leg spinners. Klassen is the boss of leggies. He is wicked against half trackers. IT doesn't even bave to be genuine half tracker. Even remotely short he can deposit in the midwicket stand.Would love to see Shadab bowling to Maxwell
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that Afghanistan bowlers made life easy for an injured Maxwell by bowling him in the slogging zone.
"Afghanistan bowled too straight to Maxwell, should have bowled at the 7th stump because he was injured and could not reach the ball," Ganguly told Kolkata TV.
Ganguly said while Afghanistan batters failed to capitalise, especially when Australia were 91/7, Maxwell's knock is the greatest ODI innings of all time.
"Ajay Jadeja must be crying. They bowled too much into his pads. He was only standing and slogging. They had to bowl wide. Don't want to take anything away from Maxwell. Probably the Greatest ODI innings you'll see," he added.
