The celebration was classy as well, i don't like to see him being so serious all the time. Smile dude smile! :)
 
WC Final 2003 was definitely etched in history.. one of the most dominatin WC Final performances of all time. The six hitting in the final 10 overs is legendary. Also remember his double-ton vs us and his duals with Shoaib. Also when I imagine or play the on-drive, I always imagine that I look like Ricky Ponting in the final screenshot =P Also some of his pull shots (especially from earlier in his career) were a delight!

I mean really... I just watched the highlights of the game again. how many people can do that?? My God what an insane innings given the context of the match. World Cup Final. You're the captain, leading your side and you totally annhilate the other side. Best Finals innings of all time

Yeap.

He gets a bad wrap for having a champion side. But people forget he was the biggest champion batsman from that side.

Believe it or not, cricket coaches taught this to kids in Australia. Supposedly to help the ball stick in your hands and to stop the ball hurting them.

I will remember Ricky as one of the toughest players ever. Feilding at silly point he was smashed in the face, and blood splattered everywhere . He must have been in pain, but the expression on his face never changed.

Two more words come to mind: pull shot

And when asked if he was not hurt too badly by a concerned pom.. he responds by mouthing expletives.

Bad natured and ready to pick up fights at the drop of the hat. As he approached the end of his career he realised the obvious things and from an instigator, turned into a person who stopped tempers from raising in the middle of the pitch.

A batsman who thrived on foul mood. Could have atleast tried being a normal natured fellow. Being good natured will be asking too mch.

Ricky had a bit of mongrel in him, which is always good for a sportsman.

^ was watching an Imran interview from a couple of years ago and he mentioned how one can lose his compassion through competitive sports. The ruthless side of you can take over your personality.

Never thought of it that way. It mist be hard to switch on and off from that mode. We say it in passing that when you step off the field it should be all smiles but surely that on field persona would have some sort of influence still.

Yeah amazing scene. Mumbai Indians have been bringing them closer, seems like intentional stuff. First Symonds and now Ponting as well. Going by this, we will soon have Umar Gul hugging Balaji Rao in Mumbai Indians. :kapil

Very pleasing to watch. Brilliant batsman. Technically flawless player. Brilliant fielder. Very good skipper. Little Arrogant but during those altercations, i liked his face whcih seemed to be trying to hide the smile. But over all one of the finest Cricketers of his generation and a ATG.

Dont think so.
Def a bully and bad natured fellow. He was gen riled up every morning it seemed. Be it the opposition player, the umpire, or even at the press conference.. he was ready to pick up a fight anytime. Proof being that with age n time he mellowed down as usually is expected from any caustic fellow.
Still it was a pleasant surprise that he was smiling and trying to avoid situation from escalating. Genuinely felt if it could have happened a lot earlier.


But, i will always remember the way he played the pull/swivel shots with authority.
He was an attacking batsman and those shots went with his image.

I remember him as probably the best murderer of the mediocre bowling that has been around since 2002 or so. Not as good as Chappell, Border or Tugga, who faced stronger bowling.

He was the sort of skipper who inspired his team by piling on the runs. When deprived of McWarne, he was exposed as tactically inept.

Good fielder. Sometimes a bad sportsman.

Great batsman and a sound captain. But also one who lacked sportsman spirit most of the time and one of the biggest rotu to ever play the game.

Yeah, there's plenty of times he's sooked but in that video he was fine. Wonder what Haddin's problem was tho

Character wise and batting no where near to someone like Sachin and I'm a Non-Indian saying that. Don't like the Indian team and its fans but Sachin is a special person. Don't forget Sachin can also bowl a bit.

Ponting was the stand out player as voted by the players themselves, former players and cricket writers.

It was amazing to watch a player with incredible skills with the bat, fielding and leading the team.

The way he led the team in the WC is legendary and will remain one of Australias proudest moments.

Only an idiot will dispute Ponting's claim as an all time great. A phenomenal talent, a wonderful batsman he was.

As a person I think he mellowed down a lot after the birth of his daughter. Was a real rowdy character until then.
 
As a fan of the game: tremendous puller of the ball. I remember him whipping Shoaib in Cardiff 2001.
His innings v eng in Manchester 2005 was tremendous.

Funny things: losing his rag in the 2011 wc. Gary Pratt. Being past his best when he faced him in eng in 2010

The reason he was voted the player of the decade was also because he was a all time great fieldsman and a brilliant leader of men. That is why most of his peers, former players and cricket critics overwhelmingly voted for him. Not just his batting skills but his fielding and leadership.

Interesting to note how every player he led in his career hold Ponting in the highest esteem, they speak of how he never thought of himself as better than any player in the squad and backed every player in the squad.
 
In terms of his tactical nous Ponting isn;t as good as Clarke.

He was a great leader though. It's very good that for Tasmanian and Australian cricket that he played out the season for Tassie. I hope he goes around again next year.

He deserved to be voted player of the decade more than anyone else, simple as that. On another note, he's the best fielder I have ever seen.

To everyone complaining about Ponting being a bad sport/sook - would you be complaining if he was a Pakistani or Indian or Englishman? Or would you be saying that he has "pride and wears his heart on his sleeve".
 
2003 World Cup final ...cannot forget that as it killed the match halfway.

Didn't care too much for his attitude though he did improve a lot at the fag end of his career.

I'll remember him as

- A superb batsman (in ATG category - ties with Greg C as second-best Aussie batsman after Bradman)
- An outstanding fielder (better than Jonty Rhodes in my book)
- A lousy captain - totally clueless when things didn't go his way (read that as "when he didn't have McWarne at his disposal to bully the opposition")
- A pathetic sulking sportsperson
 
The greatest Right Hander of his generation. Played to win & made his runs count. One of the best ever all-round fielders. & a great partnership breakers in his early days.

Dominating, against anyone, any condition, until an off-spinner started to find the flight, line & length.

RICKY PONTING FORMALLY INDUCTED INTO THE ICC CRICKET HALL OF FAME

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was today formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. To mark the occasion, Ponting received his commemorative cap from compatriot ICC Cricket Hall of Famer Glenn McGrath during the tea break on the opening day of the third Test against India in Melbourne.

Ponting was named in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame along with former India captain Rahul Dravid and England woman wicketkeeper-batter Claire Taylor during the ICC Annual Conference in Dublin in July, which Ponting could not attend.

Ponting, after receiving the cap, said: “It’s an incredible feeling, I think for it to happen here at the MCG is what makes the whole thing a little bit more special. I found out today I am one of 25 Australians to be inducted. When you play one Test for Australia, you join a very elite group of players but now to part of the ICC Hall of Fame, you join an even more elite group of cricketers, so it’s a pretty special day today.

“I have lots of great memories with Glenn. I went to the cricket academy with Glenn in about 1990, so I have known Glenn for a long time. It’s a really cool thing that they do to have a fellow inductee actually hand over your cap and induct you in, so to have someone like Glenn do it, with whom I’m working with now and have played with for 10 or 12 years, makes the whole thing a little bit better.

“It’s great recognition. I thank the ICC for what they have done in making this possible. To be here in the MCG with 75,000 people, it makes it an awesome day.”

Ponting, a three-time ICC Cricket World Cup winner including two times as captain, is the 25th Australia cricketer to be formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. The 44-year-old retired from international cricket in 2012 after scoring 13,378 runs in 168 Tests with 41 centuries, 13,704 runs in 375 ODIs with 30 centuries and 401 runs in 17 T20Is with two half-centuries.

Ponting was named the ICC Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 while also being named the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2006.

I have to say the kind of knock he played in the 2003 wc final has to be one of the best ODI knocks ever in history. He was truly a match winner and game changer and as a captain and leader was one of the best.

Ponting unlike Clarke had leadership qualities esp raising his batting during crunch moments. Clarke was very good at home but away not so good.
 
Most dangerous player of fast bowling I have ever seen...I rate him overall the best batsman of the oughties too.

Clarke was having a poor team when he became captain still he used his resources very well.

Cheat? How? Are you specifically speaking about the Sydney Test against us in 2008? He was being rowdy and obnoxious, no doubt about that. A very, very unlikable character on the field. But I don't think he was a cheat.
 
As much as I hated his guts when he was playing against India, I have to admit he was a gritty player who delivered for his team over and over again.

You can remember him as a cheat, that is your opinion.

He might be rude and come across as an a-hole, however, in terms of cricketing ability he will be remembered as the best Aussie batsmen across formats by most of the fans.

Regarding, being a CHEAT, can you explain what do you mean by that?
 
One of the best captain and batters of all time. He also had 1 of the most destructive peaks of all time.

He became the umpire in that match if you remember he was giving the decisions to the umpires raising his finger when the catches weren’t even taken and than umpires were acknowledging his decisions like he was the third umpire without even referring them. That makes him a massive cheat and I don’t even need to get into all his other business that was enough
