Regarded as one of the top off-spinners in domestic cricket in Pakistan in recent times, 26-year-old Sajid Khan is the 5th highest wicket-taker with 25 wickets to his name in this season's Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Sajid spoke about his outstanding performances this year in domestic cricket for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the disappointment of not being selected by any franchise for PSL 5, the difference between the standard of cricket in the current and previous seasons, why he holds Saqlain Mushtaq, Nathan Lyon and Mohammad Hafeez in such high regard, and his aspirations of playing for Pakistan in the future.

PakPassion.net: Tell us about your interest in cricket and how your career progressed?

Sajid Khan:
I started playing tennis-ball cricket when I was in year seven in school. I have two elder brothers who also had an interest in cricket, and I used to play with them, but I wasn’t very interested in cricket at that point. All that changed when I got to participate in a school tournament where I played hard-ball cricket in year seven which I really enjoyed. I then joined the Malik Sports Cricket Club in Peshawar to play proper cricket and have since been associated with them for about 12 years now and have also been the captain of the club for the past 5 years. I also progressed through the regional Under-16 level, and then on to regional Under-19s for Peshawar. All this while I had to juggle my studies and my love of the game but thanks to The Almighty, it has all worked out well for me. Along the way, I also played Under-23 cricket for Peshawar Region, went to the UAE for 2-3 months in 2015 to work and play cricket there, played league cricket in the UK for Whiston Parish Church Cricket Club in 2018 scoring 558 runs and taking 28 wickets, and also participated in the Shpageeza T20 Tournament in Afghanistan in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

PakPassion.net: How was the experience of playing for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in this season’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy?

Sajid Khan:
Thanks to The Almighty, this season has been great for me but then even last year, I did exceptionally well where with 34 wickets, I was amongst the top-10 highest wicket-takers. In fact, I also did well in batting last season, scoring 289 runs as well which made a lot of people say that I would be picked up by one of the franchises for PSL in 2019 or would be part of a Pakistan A tour but sadly that did not happen. When the new domestic system was put in place this year, I was convinced that I would be selected for the first XI of one of the six teams but that didn’t work out either. Thankfully, I was named for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa second XI but for the first few games, I was put on drinks duty which was strange for one of the top-performers of last year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. However, when I was finally given a chance to play, I took 5 wickets in my first game against Central Punjab and in the next game against Balochistan, took 13 wickets in the match and scored 92 to help my side win the game. I suppose based on my performances and the fact that players like Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Imran Khan sr. had been called for national duties in Australia, I was asked to play for the first XI. This was a new environment and there was the pressure of playing in the first XI for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but I impressed all by taking 8 wickets in that game and then continued performing well after that. With God’s Grace, I am now at number 5 in the top wicket-takers list for this season’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

PakPassion.net: Moving from the second XI to the First XI must have been a tough experience for you?

Sajid Khan:
It was a big leap in terms of expectations and the difference in quality of cricket between second and first XI team games was huge. The first XI for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has some seasoned international players like Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan Shinwari and Junaid Khan so playing alongside them was a great experience. But it also showed me that I had the capability to play top-level cricket and that motivated me a lot. On top of that, the exposure that a player gets at the first XI level is amazing. Every day when play ended, the player who performed well that day would be asked to appear in a press conference where TV cameras and journalists would see you in person and that would raise your profile. It’s also very encouraging for all players to know that we have been told that those performing well in domestic cricket would be rewarded in some way with a call=up to the national side or into the PSL, so to be given a chance to play in the first XI is also very beneficial for players in the long run.

PakPassion.net: Were you disappointed by the fact that you were not picked by any PSL side for the 2020 edition of the tournament?

Sajid Khan:
It's interesting that we are told that no proper off-spinner has come to the fore since the days of Saqlain Mushtaq and Saeed Ajmal. I am 26 years old and have been performing since the last year so it puzzles me that there was not even one side in PSL who could have used the services of an off-spinner like myself. A proper off-spinner is a must in most sides around the world but seems that this is not the view of some teams in PSL which is very odd.

PakPassion.net: How difficult is to bowl with the Kookaburra ball for spinners this season?

Sajid Khan:
In the previous seasons, we used to play with the Grays ball and that used to be quite good for spinners and batsmen alike, then we had a stage when we used the Dukes ball which was great for bowlers but this season we have the Kookaburra ball. With this ball the margin for error is very little and if a bowler errs in line or length then he will be hit for runs. To bowl well with this ball, you need to have immaculate control over line and length and a bowler needs use variations if he is to succeed.

PakPassion.net: How different is the standard of domestic cricket this year in comparison to last season?

Sajid Khan:
There is a huge difference between the current system and the one that was in action before this year. Previously, if you didn’t perform well in a game and you lost your place, you could hope to be back in the side after 2-3 games. Due to the quality of competition in the sides, this is not the case now. You could be out of the first XI side for a long time if you do not perform well as your replacement could easily out-perform you and establish a place for himself in the side. And if this continues, you would be demoted to the second XI where God Forbid, if you do not perform then you could be carrying drinks for the rest of the season and then you are up against the top players from Under-19s who could take your position. One other point I would like to bring up is that a lot of players are now without teams compared to previous years and the pressure to perform to keep your place in the sides is immense. However, the system is good, and it will take a couple of years before its true benefits will be obvious to all. I am hearing that a few departments may also make a comeback in domestic cricket which could be an interesting development as well.

PakPassion.net: What is the reason for the lack of off-spinners in Pakistan?

Sajid Khan:
I believe the only reason for the absence of quality off-spinners in Pakistan cricket is due to the general lack of importance given to this style of bowling. Look at how the likes of Nathan Lyon are treated by their sides. They are given the freedom to bowl with confidence but in our teams, the off-spinner is forever under the radar and has to look to be a good batsman to become a batting all-rounder if he is to survive in the side. This is the reason players are more interested in becoming leg-spinners, fast-bowlers or batsmen. I hope more off-spinners will come through in the future for Pakistan but from what I have seen so far, there are very few off-spinners around which is depressing.

PakPassion.net: Which off-spinners have you generally followed and admired?

Sajid Khan:
I have been a great fan of Saqlain Mushtaq, Nathan Lyon and Graeme Swann throughout my career and I regularly view their videos to learn from them. And I really admire Mohammad Hafeez as well as I also consider myself an all-rounder and he fits my idea of a perfect spinning all-rounder.

PakPassion.net: Do you consider yourself an all-rounder?

Sajid Khan:
My performances with the bat this season haven’t been that great to be honest, but last year I did exceptionally well as a batsman too. Whilst I am an off-spinner, to me, it’s all about what is needed by the team and when the side needs me to get runs, I can do my share as an all-rounder.

PakPassion.net: Do you feel you are ready to play for Pakistan if you are selected?

Sajid Khan:
I am hundred percent ready to represent my country if called by the selectors. Of course, there will be ups and downs in ones career as was the case recently when I wasn't named for the Pakistan Test side against Sri Lanka. I am sure the selectors had their reasons for not picking me and my job now is to work hard, as I have been doing for the past few years, and continue to improve myself with the hope that I will one day become a part of the Pakistan national side.

Not part of HP camp! Why does PCB do this! Sad stuff.

Should be fast tracked to national set up. He is one of the few off spinners in Pak domestic setup and looks to be the best out of the lot.

Unfortunately misbah prefers oldies like kashif bhatti, bilal asif asif. Plus he's not in 30s yet which is perfect as misbah will select you regardless of your performance I.e imran, ifti etc.

He doesn’t get the overspin to succeed outside Asia but that’s fine: he could be a Horses For Courses Asia Test Specialist.

Within Asia, you probably need to play Tests with:

Shaheen batting 11
Naseem batting 10.
Sajid batting 9.
Zafar batting 8.
Shadab batting 7.

Outside Asia you would replace Sajid with a third quick like Sameen Gul, and Zafar with an all-rounder who bowls seam, such as Faheem or Amad Butt.

Actually Bilal Asif debuted in tests under Mickey and Inzi and it was a perfect oppurtunity to develop a young spinner alongside Yasir in 5 matches against Aus and NZ but they went with 30+ year old and 30+ averaging offie. I get your point but Kashif was selected on merit (Was averaging 14 odd last year with ball) and isnt and shouldnt gonna be dropped without playing a match.

Yes I would have preferred a young spinner like Zafar to be involved in the setup as Yasir is already 30+. We can only hope that team management think on those lines.

Looks a decent bowler.

Worth a go on an 'A' tour at least.

Is there no mystery spinners in Pakistan domestics, with of course legal deliveries?

There are pretty much no mystery spinner in world cricket pretty much let alone in Pakistan. Dosra is out of cricket, only mystery now are googlies, arm balls and carom balls along with bit of top spin and sliders.

Heard about him but after seeing his action, won;t rate him high. Action is legal but won;t be successful and won;t be able have much variety in his bowling like arm ball or top spin with this action.

What about wickets he has taken? With same action?

Many Pakistanis - including Misbah - expect to field virtually the same team home and away.

I think differently.

I think outside Asia your only spinner is preferably a part-timer who can bat at 7, like Shadab Khan.

But in Asia you replace your fourth quick with a second spinner who can bat at 8, and sometimes your third quick with a third spinner good enough to bat at 9.

And those three spinners should be different: a leggie, an offie and a slow left-armer.

Sajid Khan can be the second spinner in Asia. You’d never play him outside Asia, he wouldn’t even be in the touring squad.

Sajid Khan, Zafar Gohar and Shadab Khan cover all three bases really.

To be successful in international cricket, you need a lot more skill and variety, but I'm not against giving him a chance based upon his performance in QeA trophy.

Brought in for the Shaheens to play 50-over game vs MCC - lets hope he does something special

How many Nathan Lyon possesses except for extra bounce and lots of turn?

In this day and age, with the technique's batsmen possess the world over, any bowler spinning the ball with lots of revs on it, can run heavoc from time to time!

On the bowler, I only watched 2-3 deliveries of him to say he is much better than that lather/rinse/repeat
bowler aka Bilal Asif, plus seems like a better bat as well

I don't know, his FC numbers seem to be ok, but the videos don't convince me one way or another.

One, just showing videos of his getting wickets isn't as convincing (IMO) as compared to a simple reel that shows him bowling 15/20 balls in a row where one can see his action, his control, loop, spin, drift etc.

Two, his action. It's jerky, with what looks like a wrist snap- No, he isn't chucking it at all, but is it repeatable and consistent (essential at the international level)? People who've watched him play will be able to elaborate.

For three, these batsmen in the video! Almost to a man they don't look very inspiring or confidence generating - that's my opinion basis what I see from their stances. The way there were getting out was also nothing to write home about (in other words, they seemed to be making basic mistakes as opposed to the bowler doing anything special). That's not Sajid Khan's fault as he can only bowl at what's in front of him. But the step up to the international level will be immense when he faces a different class of batsman.

Ideally A team games would be a good place to start but I don't know if the Pakistan A team plays many games (a quick cricinfo check seems to suggest not).

I totally agree, but you have to ask yourself “what is a Pakistan spinner’s job?”

I want a roster containing:

1. A leg-spinner who can average 30+ with the bat and bat at Number 7 in Tests. And just bowl a few accurate and economical overs in the first 3 innings of Tests outside Asia.

2. An off-spinner to be selected only in Asia, who can average 25 with the bat and bat at Number 8 in Asia only.

3. A slow left-arm bowler who can also average 25 with the bat and be selected in Asia only.

I have my doubts too about the repeatability of Sajid Khan’s action. But he would only ever play in Asia as a second or third spinner on favourable wickets.

And importantly he is 8 years younger than Bilal Asif and he can bat.

So here we are rating someone who has taken only 25 wickets in the whole damn season!

Jeez, how badly our standards are fallen and how desperate we are for a quality spinner.

He looks ok as someone who can bat as well.

He played 6 matches and was the 5th highest wicket taker at an average of 24.96. His overall FC record is decent and has a decent action for an offie. Still early days but looked decent.

Well, I don't know if Pakistan is that hard up as to require a second or third spinner (I'm assuming you mean Tests).

And if he's only good enough for that role then IMO he isn't good enough to be in the team. Better for Pakistan to have either a proper bat or a proper bowler.

And since you've focused on his expected batting averages in your response (unusual for expectations from a spinner), it seems like he may even be a poor man's Hafeez at this rate if we're looking for a batting all rounder! Because, his batting frankly from the video, didn't look much kop either. All too 'home made' a technique.

Anyway I may be too harsh on him, I've only seen 2 videos. People who've tracked him fir a longer time may give more detailed input.

Good cricketer, very passionate

But one thing I can tell you, he is easily over 35.

Bigger question is, can he average 30+ with bat outside Asia? In that case, he can make PAK Test XI as batsman only, bowling is bonus.

By the way, in general I discount 3 to 7 years for the official age of PAK cricketers- you are saying this guy is an out-layer even in that scale .......

Sajid Khan 6/71 in Round 3 of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Qea20, Round 3, Day 3

Southern Punjab could bat only 7.3 more overs after resuming the day at 257 for six thanks to off-spinner Sajid Khan, who dismissed all remaining four batsmen. They were all out for 288, which allowed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bag four bonus bowling points after they had pocketed two for batting yesterday.

Mohammad Irfan added only two more runs to his overnight score as Sajid Khan, who returned six for 71 to record his second five-wicket haul of the tournament and fifth overall, dismissed him at 73.

4/56 for Sajid Khan for KP v Central Punjab on Day 1 of Round 4 of QeA20

4/56 for Sajid Khan for KP v Central Punjab on Day 1 of Round 4 of QeA20

From PCB report :

Sajid Khan’s impressive run in the tournament continued as the off-spinner accounted for Central Punjab captain Usman Salahuddin (54), Mohammad Saad (four), Ali Shan (nine) and Bilawal Iqbal (0). He returned 26-7-56-4.

Suddenly the off-spinner stock looks very good, there is one more guy I think playing for Sindh (2nd XI?), and his figures are mind blowing. I hope there won't be any issues with his action, Sajid's one looks clean.

Aashiq Ali!

So now we have:

Sajid Khan
Aashiq Ali
Arham Nawab
Aaliyan Mehmood
Mubasir Khan.

His action I think is legal, but very round arm and not the classic high arm clean off spinners action. His domestic stats are OK but don't think he will be successful at international level. Compare his action with Lyon or even Moeen Ali, difference is obvious.

I think your on about abrar ahmed hes been promoted to first xI for sindh

Sajid Khan 4/20 - another 4fer for Sajid in ongoing game vs CP

Mubasir Khan.

Thanks for keeping track. Just going to chime in and say Mubasir Khan should be higher than Arham Nawab and Aaliyan Mehmood on that list, assuming it’s loosely ranked :afridi

Sajid Khan’s impressive run in the ongoing first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy continued as the off-spinner added four more wickets to his tally and gave his side, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an upper hand over Central Punjab on the second day of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fourth round fixture at the UBL Sports Complex on Saturday.

Title defenders Central Punjab had half of their batting lineup back in the hut with just 65 runs on board in their second innings at the close of play. They still have a 13- run deficit to surmount when Mohammad Saad (three) and Saad Nasim (14) resume their innings tomorrow morning.

Sajid accounted for top four Central Punjab batsmen – Ali Zaryab (19), Ahmed Shehzad (21), Rizwan Hussain (five) and Usman Salahuddin (one).

The 27-year-old returned 11-5-20-4 after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were bowled out for 236, courtesy an unbeaten 92 by Khalid Usman.

He is doing good, one of the quicker offies in Pak, a bit like Ajmal rather than Bilal Asif.
Has a good clean action as seen in the videos.
Would love to see his progress.
Doing well currently, needs to be picked by some psl franchise as well where he could interact with good coaching personnel and some good spinners like Imran Tahir.
Let's see he fares by the end of this QI trophy.

By his stats, his economy rate is almost 3, which is a bit high for an offie. Might be due to loose deliveries he might be bowling from time to time. Cant say anything until i can see him bowl a good long spell in fc cricket.

He is 27, so not much to worry about there. Spinners usually take time to mature and can play till late 30s.

With all these names coming up all of a sudden from nowhere when Pakistan has not really been able to find one since Ajmal years ago, my next question is why are these guys not being sent to the NCA to work with Saqlain etc; who can obviously contribute as this is his expertise and then evaluate who can possibly be close to being inducted in the Pak test side as a possibility if Yasir keeps on not performing.

Last 3 names came onto the U19 scene three weeks ago, first two names have only really ramped up their performances in recent 1-2 years.

But you’re right, now is the time to shortlist one or two (Sajid especially) and have them work with Saqlain.

Fair enough about the last 3 names - But still I'll have all of them sent over to the NCA to work with Saqlain as it surely can not harm them in any way as it may just be a beneficial move to do so for them this early in their careers to be mentored by someone like Saqlain.

Finishes up with 10/157 in match vs Central Punjab

From PCB report:

Earlier in the day, off-spinner Sajid Khan recorded his third five-wicket haul of the 2020-21 season as he added two more wickets to his tally. The 27-year-old returned six for 101 from 36.2 overs of which 11 were maiden.

Sajid Khan took half of the Central Punjab’s wickets in the match as he accounted for four of their batsmen in the first innings. As such, his figures for the match are 10 for 157.

Pretty sure he would have been in the squad for New Zealand had the PCB not had to give the nanes to NZC ahead of the squad being named.

Sajid making his case for the SA home tests. I have some hope of him being selected for that series as there'll be a new chief selector by that time. Fingers crossed!

Deserves a go over the likes of Kashif Bhatti. Haven't had a proper offie in a while.

I like this guy. He's a big turner of the ball and can also hold his own with the bat.

Don't think we have space for two frontline spinners most of the time, therefore it's going to take an injury or a real dip in performance from Yasir before we see Sajid get a shot.

Either that, or we create a dustbowl for him for Pakistan's home tests and then he can play with Yasir.

Yasir is finished. He will be gone soon.

He is a proper off-spinner

Very good stock ball and arm ball is nice too.

Action is very clean. Some shades of Greame swann in his action

Right now in Tests:

Outside Asia I would play with

6. Mohammad Nawaz
7. Shadab Khan
8. Amad Butt
9. Hasan Ali
10 Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

Nawaz and Shadab can bowl 15 overs each per day so that the quicks only bowl 15 overs each.

In Asia I would replace Amad Butt with Sajid Khan, as my lead spinner of 3.

The best off spinner in the country by a mile

Great season for him so far, finds himself top of the wicket takers pile:

Glad that difference in quality between him and Bilal Asif as off spinners is visible in wickets telly as well this season.

Come on mate, you've seen enough cricket to know that Nawaz is a complete jobber and not good enough for international cricket. If you're gonna play a spin bowling allrounder to hold an end, may as well ask Imad Wasim to fill that role.

Interesting.

This can also be an option for SENA:

6. Hussain Talat/ Hammad Azam (While Nawaz has been really good this season, I think both Talat and Azam are possibly technically better for the no 6 position)
7. Shadab Khan/ Mohammad Nawaz
8. Amad Butt/ Faheem Ashraf
9. Zafar Gohar/ Sajid Khan (To have a specialist finger spinner if required otherwise another pacer)
10. Hasan Ali/ Naseem Shah

Sajid Khan’ seventh five-wicket haul bowled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to a commanding win over Sindh by the margin of an innings and 37 runs and Zia-ul-Haq’s career-best seven for 35 secured Southern Punjab an impressive 205-run win over Sindh on the fourth and final day of the seventh round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixtures on Friday.

Sajid’s impressive run of form continued at the State Bank Stadium as the 27-year-old added three wickets to his tally on the fourth and final day of the match as he accounted for Saad Khan (tw0), Hasan Mohsin (15) and Mir Hamza (one) after he had dismissed openers Sharjeel Khan (51) and Omair Bin Yousuf (six) yesterday.

Sajid returned five for 49 to record his fourth five-fer of the ongoing season as Sindh were bowled out for a paltry 148. He played an instrumental role with the figures of three for 66 in dismissing the opposition for 229 in the first innings, following which Khyber Pakhtunkhwa posted a mammoth 414.

You cannot ignore domestic performances - had to happen - well done to Sajid.

Certain posters didn't want to see him selected even though he's statistically the best spinner in the last 2 editions, just because he doesn't "look threatening"

His statistics are incredible, but I have a different concern to his selection.

I spent a fair amount of time looking at recordings of his bowling, and what I'm noticing is that in certain situations, it appears as if his arm is bending more than it should. His action is a bit concerning, but I might turn out to be wrong. On statistics, he definitely merits a spot.

He is absolutely clean.

Other than Van Der Dussen, not convinced by the rest of the South African batters against spin. Nauman and Sajid should have some success against them.

Should play with yasir so that two spinners turning ball in opposite direction as opposed to same direction

Sorry he doesn't look anything special , round army type action

In the qea final , it was hardly a standout performance from him. Central punjab nearly chased down the score with hassan ali of all people scoring a century , if it wasn't for waqas maqsood goofing it up at the end trying to be a hero , central should have won the game
