[VIDEOS] "I still have a lot to offer Pakistan cricket" : Ahmed Shehzad

I’m sure if he was backed the way Shan Masood was then he could improve his numbers. I think he would’ve done better on this tour than Masood.

You know Masood has played one innings on this tour right. A little early to be judging his tour performance. Would Shehzad have scored 150 in England and take us to the brink of a series win? 150 is a lot more than 26.9

Your sample size to claim 26.9 is hilarious. What is Shan’s average in SC? :)

Yes, he scored 156 in the first innings, and the next 4 innings he played on that tour he scored a total of 21 runs.

That one innings, will cost us many defeats in the future.

Masood is at least one level below Shehzad, i have no doubts about that.

Ground Match Date Scorecard

Nothing to suggest why he should possibly be recalled. Pathetic numbers really

Form is temporary, class is permanent. :mv

Masood was only brought back into the team because apparently he transitioned into a white ball player during the domestic T20’s.

I dont see why Shehzad cannot get a look in when we have passengers like Azhar, Fawad, Abid in the team.

Staking a claim for a top order batsman who averages 26.9 in his 14 innings outside UAE vs Sri Lanka and Windies is hilarious too.

Masood isn't the answer, neither is Shehzad.

He just averaged 22.3 in 10 innings in QEA Trophy, let's drop him in vs Boult Southee Wagner Jamieson?

At least passengers like Fawad averaged 71 in the QEA season before he was recalled.

i think he got hit on the head in the last test and lost all confidence after that

He was very mediocre before that too. Averaged 20s away despite only playing on Sri Lanka and West Indies.

I never understood his overcautious approach towards cricket. He was hailed as aggressive batsman on PP but i found him very defensive batsman. He used to play lots of dot balls in T20 too. I guess he cared about his average and stats a lot.

Look like selfie career is over for good.

His approach is to bide his time and survive (as much as he can with his limited skill set) against the very good bowlers and then cash against the average bowlers. This is why there is such a discrepancy in his domestic and international record. In an average domestic bowling line up you will find 2-3 mediocre and one good bowler whereas in an international bowling attack you will have 3-4 good bowlers.

Not included in any Pakistan Cup squad - what gives?

Selectors finally catching on. When's the last time Ahmed Shehzad was a consistent batsmen? 2016?

What did he do wrong in the Test format? Do you think dropping him from the test team because of his performances in white ball cricket is acceptable?

Truth is, he was a crap LOI player, but in Tests he’s 100x better than the likes of Masood and Abid.

Test stats

2014 - average of 48 in 13 innings
2015 - average of 38 in 6 innings
2017 - average of 30 in 4 innings

Perhaps he's better than Shan and Abid (very low bar), but I don't think he's as good as you are remembering.

Besides, Shehzad as a batsmen has deteriorated significantly in the last couple of years. He was fairly mediocre in the last QeA trophy.

Let alone Pakistan, looks like even Quetta is done with him. Rumors suggesting Lahore are preparing to replace him with Fakhar Zaman :14: Kind of sad to be honest, was hoping Lahore would give either Ali Imran or Zeeshan Malik a chance

Hes a shadow of a player he was 5-6 years back but even then he wasnt great but at best acceptable

I wonder whats happened to him that he can hardly buy a run these days

Aaqib the boss, he will do all he wants.

Ever since he got hit in the head and the concussion brushed under the carpet his batting has deteriorated big time

He's finished wasted talent, just like umar akmal.

A big shame he was a gun player when he came on the scene in white ball cricket smacking boundaries all over the place, beautifully pulling short ball in newzealand at that time I thought pakistan had really found a proper opener for the modern style of the game

There’s no “perhaps”, that would suggest uncertainty. It’s a fact. If you see the shots he plays, they’re proper cricket shots. Shan Masood had to hire a personal coach from England and even then he still only averaged 2.5 in NZ.

Yes, he’s deteriorated and PCB is to be blamed for that. They threw him out the team because surprise surprise, the coach Waqar Younis had a falling out with him.

Waqar Younis used him and Umar Akmal as scapegoats for his own failures. He knew Akmal and Shahzad were the most scrutinised players in the team.

What I’m saying is, had Ahmed Shahzad not been dropped for tests in 2017 maybe he would’ve been a different player to what he is now.

The concussion affecting his batting is a myth. He scored a 100 against SL after his return from injury.

Shehzad just does not have batting talent. His bowling has potential. He should reinvent himself as a spinner and middle-order hitter.

Even before his head injury to a 125kph bouncer he had been a very slow player striking at 72-73 per 100 deliveries in ODIs

He was always a trash player. Dropping him and Umar Akmal got us 2017 CT win. Even Mickey Arthur had had enough of them

As I mentioned in my earlier post, he was a crap LOI player. That doesn’t mean we should drop a player from the test team does it?

If Babar Azam performs badly in 2021 in white ball format and does ok in red ball cricket does that mean we should drop him from all 3 formats?

Dropping him from the test team gave us Shan Masood and Abid Ali. 😊

Shehzad wasn't dropped from Test because of ODI/T20 performances. Like I said, his Test batting got a lot worse:

2014 - average of 48 in 13 innings
2015 - average of 28 in 6 innings
2017 - average of 30 in 4 innings

His last 10 Test innings he had an average of below 30 - all of those 10 innings were against very weak WI and SL bowling.
He was dropped from the Test team because of that

Ok you’re saying Ahmad Shahzad was dropped because he regressed in 2017, which is true. But, let’s look at the other players in the team that played in his last test match in 2017.

Asad Shafiq (2017) - 6 Matches, 25 Average. 2 of those games in UAE. Wasn’t dropped. Career average same as Shahid Afridi, who didn’t even take test cricket seriously.

Babar Azam (2017) - 6 Matches, 16 Average, 2 of those games in UAE. Wasn’t dropped.

Shan Masood (2017) - 3 Matches, 22 Average, replaces Ahmad Shahzad in the 3rd test vs West Indies. Averages below 30 in 25 Test matches.

We basically replaced an okay-ish test batsman with an even worse batsman.

Big LOL to posters who mention he was a gun player before hit by a bouncer. He was always an average player.

Surprising that he is not even good enough to be a fringe player these days. A really low point in his life.

I expect him to have a resurgence in a year or so.
Dont think he will lie down and be defeated so easily.

Needs a new agent, should be looking to play in leagues like T10, BPL and LPL.

He has really disappeared from the public eye.
Saj What is the latest report on him?

Don't care for what the haters have to say, Ahmed has 2.3 million followers on twitter, beat that!

He played a couple of games in the Quaid trophy then got injured/ dropped possibly.

He was also absent from the Pakistan cups.
He is pretty committed with his fitness regime, but his career is really in the doldrums right now.

On twitter as well, all he does is congratulate his peers.
There is no word about what he is doing to revive his career.

At one point he was the biggest shokha, and he would love overrating his own achievements.
I hope this downturn has humbled him and made him a better person overall. That much needed maturity may salvage his career.

True, if I were him, I'd be looking at the opening slots across ODI and T20I.

Will need to go into QEA, occupy the crease, and score a pile of runs to show his improvement.

Will also need to let go of his ego, and will need to adapt to what the management expects from him.

I wouldn't rule him out just yet, but maybe the future will tell what happens to his career.

There is a Test opening spot waiting for him if he has it in him to step up. Should give up on his T20I career (due to the existence of Rizwan, Babar, Fakhar, Haider, Sharjeel, and countless others). Should look to break into the Test side otherwise his career is finished.

Yep, the test team, and maybe the ODI team are his only options.

He's an age fudger and age alongside getting hit in the head which wobbled him.

I don't see a comeback at intl level.

He's probably around 34 yrs old in real life probably another one of those who knocked off 5 yrs to be a youngster forever

As an Indian, i saw commentators calling him an aggressive player when he arrived to the scene. Unfortunately, i never saw any intent from him. He was always a mediocre player with limited ability to be honest. I hope he never makes back to Pak team. It will mean Pak batting standards are improving.

Attitude is the biggest problem with him and Akmal.

Most people won't remember, but both were incredibly talented players from the age they came onto the scene.

Both had terrible attitudes and poor work ethics, and they let the team and country down.

Right now, there aren't any openers in our domestic circuit, and so that's the only reason I suggested that his chances would be limited to the test and ODI team.

He is a mediocre player, so I doubt he'll get any chances.

Regardless of the conjecture, he is still extremely fit and is atleast a good decade younger than Hafeez n co.
So this age thing doesn't add up. He always had middling ability, but could have redeemed himself with a good work ethic, especially in test cricket.
Definitely had more natural ability than Azhar and Asad.
I have seen the signs of his work ethic improving in the last two years, but life seems to have slowed down for him.
Let's hope that he recovers from this trough, and can have a good first class career, if not a test one.

He was always overrated by fans and that really got to his head. Never liked him due to his attitude but a part of me does feel sad to see him fall away completely like this. It’s going to be tough for him to make a comeback especially with the domestic scene becoming even more competitive now. Definitely won’t be breaking in to a full strength CP team considering he couldn’t make it whilst half the team was absent on national duty. Might have to sign up for Balochistan but even they will select Imam and Imran Butt as openers ahead of him. Tough times for Shezzy let’s see how things pan out.

He should focus on test cricket moving forward. Play a full season of FC cricket and try to make a case for yourself as Test opener..Abid Ali is on a borrowed life at this stage..forget about the shorter formats..not made for ODI or T20

He’s a very limited cricketer

It’s hilarious when I see people compare this stroke less wonder to Umar Amal who despite being brainless had all the shots in the book.

According a news reporter, he had a falling out with Shahid Anwar who dropped him from the domestic team, no where to be seen since then

Why is he not even playing in the PSL ? He was the first T20 Internationals Centurion from Pakistan. No franchise picked him up in the PSL ?

bohat jaldi afridi ban'nanay ka shauq tha, bina success (performances) k fame got to his head...

Whatever you say about the guy he had more than enough talent to at least be playing domestics and PSL at this stage of his career.

I don't know what has happened to him but it is a sad outcome. Hope he is well.

Have you seen his performance in recent years?

Still can’t believe that this guy used to compare himself to Tendulkar and Hayden in 2014-15 and also said “I have achieved everything and have nothing left to prove.”

Sir Viv hails talent of Ahmad Shahzad. Is it time to recall Shahzad to solve our opening problems?

6F6D63B0-516D-450F-BF57-92767F25A38C.jpg

Ahmad Shahzad’s fitness levels are as good as ever. Probably will easily be the fittest guy on the team. He is hungry to score runs and recapture the glory days. Pakistan is crying out for a dynamic opening batsman who can play comfortably every gear whether it be defensive or aggressive. His fielding has always been good. Known to be a good team player and positive influence in the dressing room. And most importantly he has matured a lot and realizes he’s not 21 anymore even if he looks that. So wants to make up for lost time!

I always thought if only Shehzad had Akmal's talent and Akmal had Shehzad's brains....life would have turned out different for both.

Agree.

Shehzad tbh has probably taken his limited talent and skill set to the extent he could have. So that is an achievement

He is a toxic personality. I meet him years ago in England at some event. We never talked but sat at the same table for a few hours. Anyway he should have been persisted with in tests and not 20-20. However now is too late for national recall. Plus as I said he is toxic. Like akmal.

:yk I used to go to the same gym as him. He seemed like an alright guy. Did have an attitude on him but then not everyone is a acha bacha like Azhar.

Scored 111* vs Bangladesh - still remains highest total for any Pakistani in T20Is

He tried to become too smart and complicated his game for no reason whatsoever. If he had continued to play the way he started off, he could've had a more fruitful career. For some inexplicable reason, he became this sluggish opener who would only rely on big hit/boundaries to score his runs. I fail to understand what really prompted him to completely change his batting approach.

Went downhill so fast, it was incredible really how quickly his career plunged.

Sadly too many Pakistani cricketers head this way.

His fitness over time improved a lot but it was never his sticking point. It was always his batting that needed work. Sadly he never gave it any attention.

A few posts in recent times about Ahmed so thought we should discuss his career and future utility in this thread.

Definitely has the space in test and ODI team. Needs to perform in domestics and get back. He has the capability.

He was just so arrogant and full of himself. He was good when he started around 2010-2013 but after that became a pedestrian in the batting line up. Called Shahid Afridi his ideal but had a strike rate of 71 in odis as an opener in the modern day which was less than misbahs. I do feel that during that Misbah era a lot of our batsman became defensive cause Misbah would always complain about being the glue at 10-2 or 15-3. He would always say preserve your wicket and we can make up later but that rarely happened cause cricket has changed a lot and you have to be positive from the start. He’s still got a bit of time on his side tho but will need a lot of hard work and consistency.

The problem with shehzad was mainly his strike rotation which is the case with many young Pakistani batsman. They either play dots or go for a boundary and eventually get out. There’s no in between game with singles and doubles that release pressure and break a bowlers rhythm. Pakistani batsman typically play an over like( 0 0 0 0 4 1 ) which gets you 4/5 runs when they should be looking for singles and doubles (0 1 0 2 4 1) that’s easily 8 runs risk free even with 2 dots. It’s the little things that count but most of the batsman don’t understand this. They either go tuk tuk or boom boom and then get out due to their own poor shot selection and negative style of play.

Perhaps it was misbahs defensive mindset that rubbed of on them. He took Pakistan backwards in odis and they are still suffering from that when the rest of the world has moved on.

Shehzad and Akmal should never ever come near the team, in any format. Our batting level is not yet at the level of teams like England, Australia or India, but we are still miles better than what we were when these 2 used to be our "key batsmen".

Oh no! Not this thread again.

I use to believe in Ahmed Shehzad back in the day. If he wants me to believe in him again than he will need to score tons of runs in domestic cricket. He certainly cant do any worse than Shan Masood or Abid Ali in the test arena.

Just shows what happens when your not continuously pushing yourself, setting new targets, looking to improve throughout your career

Babar azam has continually challenged himself in every phase of his career Hes cut back on the dot ball percentages, looked to improve his fitness n boundary hitting Wanted to become the best batsman in the world and score in every game he played

Shezad shouldve been the same but probably thought he had made it and didnt look to continue work hard n improve The fame n social world got to him He stagnated and this is the result The game moved on and he didnt

Greats are those that continue to work hard throughout their career and there are those that think theyve made it and can now relax

Its a shame

He is one of the worst player to have played for Pakistan national team for so long along with sarfraz Ahmed.
He is a talentless hack with limited ability. One of the worst player ever.

Funny you say that. Kamran Akmal is infinitely worse than both of them but played far more games for Pakistan.

When u see what Riz and Babar can do. Shehzad should never play for Pakistan again

There is no doubt that Shezzy is in top 5 batsman in Pakistan.

We all know he was unjustly dropped and was target of same lobby which is now targeting Rizwan as per @Saj
