As an opener you can afford to play the tuk tuk boom method assuming you are good enough. The field is in so you can hit fairly safely within reason. One of the reasons Kamran Akmal was successful in the PSL until age caught up with him.
Shehzad's problem was that he made his name while playing with a flashing blade, but after a run of failures started playing more selfishly and playing to preserve his wicket. He just ended up wasting the powerplay overs when the field was in, and then more often than not getting out on his first attempts to hit out once he was in.
The guy is a spent force and hasn't done anything noteworthy as of late, he doesn't fit in any of the formats right now and for me must work his way back up the ladder by performing in list A, first class and t20.
The current Ahmed Shehzad in our team is Haider Ali, flashy mystifying boundaries but no real ability.

Shehzad can hardly do worse than Imran Butt or Abid Ali at the top of the order for Pakistan, given how those two often struggle to get into double figures.

That's true, he gets a lot of hate & a lot of it is unjustified. Ahmed Shehzad is just another cricketer that has been misused by PCB. He is primarily a Test player. He averages a little over 40 in tests. But he was wasted frequently in limited overs cricket. At the moment Pakistan does not have a single decent test opener. He needs another look as a test opener.
An opener with an average of 40 is not good enough but someone like Shan Masood who averages in 20s, gets to play 25 tests. Should raise some eyebrows.

Lol at unproven Saud Shakeel and Haider Ali being better. Also Harris sohail belongs in recovery ward of hospital. He plays once in blue moon.
What really tells me everything is that despite being such a massive Shahzad hater even then you could only name 7 batsmen who are better than him.
In reality only Babar and Rizwan are definitely better whereas Imam and Fakhar and Shezzy are all in same boat. Even if let’s be generous and say they better; even then Shezzy is too 5. So I can only laugh at you sir!

If we’re talking about test cricket, then there’s no way Fakhar, Saud and Haider are ahead of him.
With mediocre players like Masood and Abid Ali taking his spot, there will always be window of opportunity for him.

I don’t have to tell you his domestic performances when I can tell you the performances of the players that took his test spot since 2017.
Abid Ali: 10 Matches, 35 Average
Masood: 16 Matches, 32 Average
Fakhar: 3 Matches, 32 Average
Imam: 11 Matches, 25 Average
Abid Ali has a FC average of 37, not sure what it was before he got selected.
Masood didn’t even have to perform in the domestic FC games to get picked in the test team. He only got picked because he done well in the domestic List A tournaments. He won’t have to prove himself in FC games to get picked again, because Pakistan has no other alternative, they will be forced to go back to him.
Fakhar has only played 3 games, but why did he get picked in the test team? Was he a better option than Ahmed Shahzad?
Imam ul Haq was averaging around 35 before he got picked for the national team, I can’t recall him doing anything special in the FC games. Why was he picked?
Tell me how these players even merit a selection for the test team? Ahmad Shahzad was dropped for these guys?
In the test format, Ahmed Shehzad is easily our top 5 batsman. Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq have been exposed since Misbah and Younis left. Both averaging in the 30’s since 2017 if I’m not mistaken.
In conclusion, I’d still pick Shahzad for the test team based on what he’s done at the top level, he’s miles better than his competitors, and clearly there’s no such thing as getting picked on merit in Pakistan, because if there was, Fawad Alam would’ve had more test caps than mediocre players like Azhar and Asad.
Bahhhh the Shehzadians are still around and are just as unbearable. How can you even possibly remotely think about wanting to select a guy who isn’t even good enough to make in to his domestic team? Unbelievable the state of Pakistan cricket fans.

This ‘garbage’ cricketer is part of two ICC trophy winning sides and his performances in Tests in 2013-15 period (where he destroyed mighty Aussies and NZ) were key in Pakistan climbing to #1 ranking in Test cricket.
May Allah fill our side with more such ‘garbage’ cricketers giving ‘garbage’ performances.

The two ICC tournaments you are talking, Shehzad was hogging on to the trophy as if he contributed in any way to them, while infact the batsmen who replaced him were instrumental in getting us those wins

Ahmed Shehzad is not even in the top 20 batsmen in the country. He averaged 22 in the 2020/21 QEA FC Tournament, which is among the worst in the country.

A lot of delusional thoughts in this thread. Can one of Ahmad’s friends who is posting in this thread enlighten us on how match readiness he is right now? And please don’t respond with “he’s more ready than XYZ player.” I agree that Shehzad was very talented, longer term he should have gotten more chances at the test level but let’s not pretend that he didn’t screw things up on and off the field. There were some damning statements made about him by our coaching staff and others. Best thing for him now is to have a sensational domestic season and knock on the selector’s door. By topping the batting charts in Pakistan plus pressure from his side it will be enough to bring his name into the conversation but it would be idiotic to teleport him into the team right now.

Easy to talk, but where’s the performances? Can’t even find a place in a PSL side yet he’s talking about what he offers. Still remember his video with Kevin Peterson where he was out of excuses when he questioned his form so he said something about batting at no 3 which wasn’t his “natural position” what a drama queen he is and who can forget his claimed catch vs Sri Lanka when it clearly hit the ground. So incompetent that in 2015 there are cameras everywhere so why was selfie boy acting. The further he is from the side the better. His lucky days opening for Pakistan are done.

He's already 30 now. He changed his style from being unhinged from the first ball to becoming probably the slowest opener from 2011-2017. His work ethic and failure to realize his shortcomings was the biggest problem. One can not improve unless he admits there is a problem. His problems lied poking outside the offstump or missing the one nipping back in earlier on and hitting every drive straight to the fielder instead of in the gaps. Had he worked on that, he could have become a very good batsmen. Cause he did have the shots to score quickly once set. But he was kind of selfish in that way that regardless of conditions and the target, he would almost always start at snail's pace and would only start taking risks once he crossed 50 mark. Apart from his maiden century in NZ, all of his centuries had the same pattern. His 100 against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2014 was one of the poorest centuries I have seen. The required run rate was almost 11 when he had reached his 50(at SR of 60s or 70). Only after that he started to take risks or even try to go for boundaries. If not for Afridi's 50 of 20 odd deliveries, we would have lost that match.
In 2015 wc and 2016 wt20, he looked like a kid playing against men. Same goes for Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood(wc2015), Nasir Jamshed(2015) and a few other guys.
Think it's too late for him now to reshape his batting. The best thing he can do is to work on his shortcomings esp earlier on in the innings and his placement of shots and let go off his ego. He may not be enormously talented but I think he can still make a useful test opener. He definitely has more potential than most of the test openers we have.

I am not overrating Ahmad Shehzad. I am just saying how much less confidence I have in Abid & Imran when it comes to facing quality bowling on a difficult pitch.
Obviously the current Ahmad Shehzad is not half broken but fully broken as reflected in his recent domestic stats. He has kinda given up on cricket it seems.

You do realise you are talking about Pakistan cricket , here players feel injustice has been done to them after they are dropped and believe they deserve to be recalled not because of their own successful performances to silence critics since being dropped - no, their logic is that their replacement has also failed and proven to be mediocre, so why the injustice against them only.

33 is very young in pakistan cricket.
The real issue is that not only he lost his confidence after getting hit on the helmet but recently also lost interest in cricket otherwise he would have been piling runs in domestic cricket.

No he's been struggling and badly lost his way.
Never say never in Pakistan cricket, but he's got a lot of hard work ahead of him if he is to return to international cricket in any format.

Fans want him. His performances warrant it. He is hungry to perform at international stage. I am baffled to as to why he is not playing.
They have totally wrecked his career and stopped him from realizing potential. In any other country not only would he be a regular but in some leadership role by now.

If Imran Butt makes the team off of a season in FC where he didn't score a blistering amount of runs, the job for Ahmed Shehzad is quite simple if he can score a few big hundreds on those already flat wickets.
He has no place in our white-ball squads. He can spend the rest of his career trying to break into the T20 team only to get discarded after a failed series, or he can try hard in FC cricket and get a very long rope as a test match opener, and extend his progress into the other formats gradually.
The decision is up with him. I personally rank Shehzad higher than Abid Ali and Imran Butt, both of whom have little natural talent to display when compared with Shehzad, though both might have worked a lot harder to reach this stage.

Not test cricket.
Solely because Misbah has a soft spot for Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal, otherwise, he wouldn't have tampered with an already settled T20I squad in that SL series.
Ahmed Shehzad has a decent test record, and I would bank on him to score more valuable runs that Abid Ali and Imran Butt.
However, I don't think he is getting a recall into white-ball cricket.
Now, Umar Akmal is a different case, because our middle order woes paired with a good List A season could literally spell another comeback from him, which would be unfortunate.

Ahmad Shahzad should’ve never been dropped from tests. He’s one of the few Pakistani openers prior to Imran Butt and Abid Ali who came into the team through the system and not as a parchi like Masood, Imam and Farhat

t20i is the format that will be the hardest for him to get into. Test team is the place for him to break into.

His last test match he scored 70 odd, the same match where our golden boy Babar Azam got 2 ducks.
He was dropped from all formats because he wasn’t doing well in LOI. Waqar Younis has made many mistakes in his coaching career and this is possibly one of his biggest mistakes.
Great achievement that is scoring 70 rums.whilst golden boy has performed in different formats shezad declined.

Let’s be honest here, Shehzad is an idiot and behaved like one while part of the national team. The report on him was scathing, he has no one to blame but himself for his attitude and behaviour. Now, talent wise he was up there for sure and should have been given a long run in the test side. We played him in the wrong formats, he had some big LOI knocks but those don’t tell the story on where his career could have gone long term.

Bring him back, hes better than many pathetic unfit fixers we have in our squad. Test format is a no-brainer.

For a mediocre team like Pakistan that’s begging for a quality opener, we can’t afford to drop players because of their attitude or behaviour. Was he fit? Yes. Was he a liability in the filed? Nope he was our best fielder. Was he scoring runs? Yes he scored 70 in his last test before being dropped.
If the guy is performing then I couldn’t care less about his attitude, I’d rather have that over someone like Asad Shafiq who behaves well but can’t perform when the team needs him.

Babar Azam was averaging around 16 in Tests for quite a while, he was lucky that his coach was Mickey Arthur and not Waqar Younis because he would’ve been dropped from all three formats just like Shahzad.
