He seems to not want to let his first class average drop below 75

Shafiq has very good technique. He is suited to the longer versions of the game. The future of Pakistan cricket id good Players like Mubasir,Faseeh,Bangalzai,Haseebullah,
Saim and Omair will be ready to play for Pakistan in near future.
Not sure about his good technique. He is guilty of driving against the moving ball and edging early to the slips and gully. He got lucky a few times in this match where the ball missed the fielders. He has also been bowled four times in his career due to having a large gap between bat and pad. He needs to iron out these issues
I agree but hopefully he will learn and adjust. In comparison to most PK batsman he is technically quite good.

Aligned. I am eager to see him develop as a middle order ODI batsman. What are your thoughts on trying Abdullah at 3-down
Not suited for 3 down. I'd say if we can't get him in the team as an opener he should be in the team at 2 down but I think he will soon usurp Fakhar in ODI XI & maybe he can come 1-down in T20I's as well, people might think he's another accumulator but he's not he has much better power game as compared to Babar & Rizwan also he has better intent than Babar who is tbh timid.
I am not sure if Babar is timid or if he can replace Fakhar. Both have established themselves, and Abdullah is a rookie and can be anyone at this stage.
That said, he’s supremely talented and should get a chance in ODI MO sooner rather than later. He can always work his way up to the top order.
Fakhar has been consistently poor in ODI's as well since the South African series in 2021 he has scored just 1 fifty(vs Aus) & 1 hundred(vs NED) in 12 ODI's & if he continue like this sooner or later he will get replaced for good. You can't drop Imam because of his top performances but you can certainly drop Fakhar.
I don’t want this thread to be about Fakhar, who has done well over 6 years. Abdullah can definitely start lower down the order and work his way up. I can’t see why he can’t play 2 down or 3 down.
Fakhar has never done well ever in his career. The sole reason for him being in the team is that we don't have any aggressive player like him, he's very average ODI player(that 45 average is bloated) & he's very very very poor T20I player.
I simply don't understand the reasoning for Abdullah to start lower down the order when he can be as good a striker as Fakhar & overall as a player he will be miles ahead. Abdullah is a natural opener & should play as one it's not an office where he can start from down & work his way up the order.

Abdullah Shafique made an unbeaten 114 against Southern Punjab

Pakistan has found good openers eg Shafiq,Huraira and Saim.We need good spinners, late order batters and a couple of good fast bowling allrounders. If we can manage this then Pakistan will be a very good team.
He seems to be a batting mould of Azhar Ali. Looks to survive whilst batting long.
If he can impose himself better with a more aggressive intent once set then he will be one to look out for.

He should now play ODIs for Pakistan and should open in nest year's WC in India .

How is his s/r in ODIs? Is he a grafter like Imam or plays aggressively? Whom will you replace him with?
Saw his test hundred in a winning cause. Looks good and is young too if I am am right.
He hasn't even done well in List A.
Pakistan have other better openers regardless with Imam/Fakhar and even Shan Masood. One name who may uproot them is Saim Ayub.
Abdullah is fantastic in Tests and Pakistan should let him focus on that. If he dominates in limited overs domestically, maybe it can be given consideration but right now, absolutely not.

It's really hard for him to break into the ODI side. Fakhar and Imam who have performed and can't be seperated so his natural position is out.
The highest he can bat is 4 and i'm not sure he's really cut out for that role when ODI's are demanding 350+ scores these days.
Rizwan should open in odis if he doesn't then he shouldn't be in the xi.

Central Punjab’s Abdullah Shafique is in prime form in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season. He entered the eighth round as the leading run scorer and on Tuesday, the 23-year-old right-handed opener stroked his third century of the tournament against Northern on what was the first day of the first-class four-day affair at the LCCA Ground.
Central Punjab were 302 for five in 82 overs at the close of play with Abdullah’s 155, scored at an impressive strike rate of 70.45, standing out. He punched 20 balls for fours and deposited three over the boundary rope for maximums in his 220-ball innings.
Rizwan opening with Imam? This reminds me of the greatest ODI opening there's ever been...Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad.![]()
In t20's there was justification for this due to repeated failures and lack of options at the top of the order. Rizwan seized his opportunity and has never looked back.
In ODI's that opportunity isn't there yet and isn't as likely to be. Rizwan needs to start making runs as a middle order batsman rather than be given the opener position without earning it.
Yes and these FC games include 40% test matches so cant even say these are soft runs.7 hundreds, 3 of those 150s i think, in 18 matches is crazy, his propensity for big regular hundreds means he will reap exponential returns on technical improvements as he seems to really make it count when he gets in.
of course still a long way to go, but i cant remember an opener starting out their first-class career averaging 70 odd over 17 fc games. I'm guessing maybe phil hughes or someone in india might have, hope he performs in the upcoming tests too.
Pakistan should open with Abdullah and Hurraira against England. Imam has not been that impressive to be honest. Also you can replace Fawad with whatever number 5 has scored heavily in QEA (Sarmad Bhatti?)
Imam's not going anywhere anytime soon tbh. He's got a red ball contract this year after coming in thanks to Babar clique, somehow sliding him in BD series ahead of Shan. He won't go too until Azhar goes, and Azhar's selfishness and unwillingness to retire has cost us planning into the future for SENA massively. Putting his 100 tests above the future of Pakistan Test cricket lol. Embarrassing.

100% spot on pakistan have thrown away the chance of a WTC final through the easiest fixtures on paper because the PCB think Tank would rather continue picking same garbage players imam, Azhar etc.. then building a team to compete in long run.
He averages 75
Has 7 50+ scores in just 14 innings
Dominated quality sides like Australia and England
Produces a 4th inning gem on Galle pitch
Is any other youngster even close to him when it comes to test format?

He's not played a single innings outside of Asia. So let's not rate him that highly
He's actually one of the most timid batsman I've ever seen for sure, right after Azhar Ali. Just like Azhar, this guy never seems to dominate any team. He will play the same way irrespective of whether he is on 10 runs or 150 runs. Which is a sure shot sign of a timid batsman who can never take the attack to the opposition. I will never forget his Karachi innings where his 96 off 300+ balls ensured from the outset that Pakistan will not chase. Terrible innings.
Pakistani batsmen don't have to look even that far to see Younis Khan dominating test attacks across the globe once he got past 50. And here after Azhar, we are being treated to another clone in Abdullah Shafique. His lack of intent will cause him so many problems outside Asia.
Still not sure what to make of him. He looks solid and has many qualities like hunger for runs and great concentration, but there is a nagging feeling that until he plays and scores on bouncier tracks, he could be another one trick pony.
Yes
His real test would be in Australia Dec 2023 tour
Australia has been a grave yard for our best batsmen( Inzi, MY and Miandad),so expecting AS to score heavily maybe setting expectations too high. But I take your point
