English commentator allegedly makes racially-sensitive remark on Jasprit Bumrah, calls India's superstar pacer 'Primate' on air

Former England cricketer Isha Guha who is currently doing commentary duties for Fox Sports in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 came under fire after she a racially sensitive statement on Jasprit Bumrah live on air during day 2 the third Test match against Australia at Gabba.

She allegedly made a racial comment on Bumrah after India's pacer picked up two quick wickets in the high-voltage clash. India's premier speedster is in the form of his life in an ongoing series. He had picked up a five-wicket haul in India's record 295-run win in Perth while leading the side in Rohit Sharma's absence. He was India's lone warrior in the Adelaide Test where Australia defeated India by 10 wickets. On day 2 of the third Test match, the India speedster picked up his 12th career five-wicket haul amid centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith.

Australia legend Brett Lee was full of praise for the Indian vice-captain.

“Bumrah, today: five overs, 2-4. So, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper,” Lee said.

However, in response to the statement, Guha made an eyebrow-raising remark as he called Bumrah a “primate”.

She added: “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah.

“He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”

LOL! Wow!

She called Bumrah a monkey pretty much.

Then again, Isa herself is a brown lady. Brown on brown racism?

People seem to be confusing the word primate with primitive. Bumrah is literally a primate, every human being is...

She just had a brain fade. And she apologized . Good stuff. Got to move on now.

Best not to make a big deal out of it ala Andrew Symonds

.
Her husband is white so she is a self loather. Must hate Indian men.

Why is Isa Guha still on air - she is one of the worst commentators I have ever had the displeasure of listening to.

She will probably get away with this due to women card. If a man has said that his commentary career would have been over.

Gavaskar seems to have done pretty well for himself despite calling some West Indians barbaric primitives who should go back to swinging in the trees where they belong....

Primate is just Gen-Z talk for person
really not a big deal
would have been a bigger deal if it was a white person saying it about a brown person
If that's indeed true, then this should not be an issue at all.

After all, it's the intent that matters.

Perfect example of the Streisand effect this. Absolutely nobody had heard about this supposed 'slur' but now FoxSport has brought everyone's attention to it now.

She needs to stay within the limits on the mic. Can’t get too cocky or funny and end up making such remarks. Some may not get offended but most would.

Like BBC's Misstiano Penaldo drama during Euro

This is pretty much a non-issue for me. Many people in UK talks like that this creature or this chap or this primate etc. She obviously didn't meant to call Bumrah a monkey...that is a typical desi people way of perceiving things. Also, bcoz it is Isa Guha, Bumrah should accept her apology immediately.

All fine but what about the last line, are others sarcastic or she too innocent?

She clearly didn’t mean it the way folk have interpreted it, she meant it as a compliment. Isa’s a top lass generally.

But what I’ve learned though from this is that, primitive minds have been offended.

A man should never take offence what she says....IYKWIM :trump2

If this was said by Shastri or Gilly, ofcourse I will be up in arms and protect my Bhartiya player.

People are misunderstanding the issue.

The uproar came from primates who were aghast at being compared to Indians.

Most of indian fan's including me dont think she said anything related to racists remarks .

But some sections of fans think in defferent way so better of commies to avoided this type of word's as Whole cricketing world is watching the BGT .

It's to do with the era we are living in.

A strange thing to say in a normal conversation let alone in cricket commentary.

She’s one of the better female commentators but imo outside of cricket she must have heard or been involved in a bad joke which likened bumrah to some sort monkey/ape because of his arms , looks etc . It then came out on air , not surprisingly on these lame aus channels where they try harder to be funny , than discussing cricket .

You can see in her apology there was some intent in her original remark .

She regrets it so things should move on but no doubt will lose some work over this .

It's internalised racism, she probably thinks that of herself. It is a very specific and odd comment to say, a freudian slip perhaps.

Or the opposite she forgets her background as most of her time is spent with others , which is perfectly fine .

It seems every series India play in Australia, racism makes the news.

Fans can’t be stopped , players can be controlled but there is no reason at all a commentator should use such words.

it’s a mistake , a serious one . It’s upto her employers.

But one thing for sure she will promote IPL in the very other sentence on the mic lol

What's perfectly fine, this is an incredibly offensive thing to say live on air. She obviously has a complex, she must look down on Indian men.

I have come across women like this, it's always the really dark skinned ones. Defenitely a self loather.

"Primate" is is just used by gen-z types today to mean "person".
Also, you have to look at the context of how she said it.
Literally, she was saying it in a way that was in praise of Bumrah
Not offensive at all

Does anybody remember "Monkey gate"?? Did anybody apologize for calling "Monkey" or whatever was actually said?

I can't stand her but this is just a slip of the tongue. Wayne Rooney was described as a beast, rightly no one had a problem but imagine if it was an African player, it becomes a real issue and rightly so. In this case she had been less creative and just called him top dog

This was probably some kind of racist inside joke the commentary crew had going on behind the scenes and she thought she was being funny and edgy by saying it live on air. She has always struck me as self-loathing and miserable...she will get away with it with a half-assed apology because she is brown herself but this was extremely poor behaviour.

During a live broadcast, Isa Guha made an on-air mistake and later apologized, explaining that her comments were intended as high praise but had simply come out wrong. However, Ravi Shastri’s response to her apology seemed to go a bit overboard. He remarked that “things happen in the heat of the moment when you have a mic in your hand,” which appeared to throw Isa off. Her body language suggested she was not entirely comfortable with his comment, as it did not quite align with the context of her explanation. While Ravi was likely trying to be supportive, perhaps hoping to diffuse the situation and placate online Indian fans, his choice of words did not fully fit the moment and somewhat undermined Isa’s clarification.

Accused person of being self loather, looking down on others... can't help but mention skin tone himself...

I didn't think it was racist at all. Think she was actually trying to praise Bumrah in some weird way and make him look macho and primal.

People are just extreme snowflakes and get offended by anything and everything .

Anyway she has apologised and everyone should just move on from this.

Oh my God- big ado about nothing! People mees to grow thicker skins. Big deal! People are so freaking sensitive - it's just commentary entertainment.. don't know what the fuss here is.. actually thought Shastris comments were funnier unintentionally.. horse's mouth after said primate- you can't make this up- comedy gold lol!

Now Mr Shastri- the more pertinent issue. When do you advocate dropping kohli and rohit on commentary? When will rohit stop being so defensive?

All humans are primates. She did not call him Simien which would have been racist.

Like usual snowflakes can't handle anything and cry racism over everything.

People are just so sensitive nowadays.. steve waugh would have been labelled a villian now by his own Aus public if he was playing in the modern era.. seriously this cancel culture is getting ridiculous..

Remember McGrath being accused by the Sri Lankans of calling Jayasuriya a black monkey in 2001?

She’s boring and dull in commentary but this is just making an issue out of nothing, slip of tongue.

Ever since rise of internet we see every little thing being made into some big deal.

Rather than complaining about what she said on air people should be complaining about her actually being on air and boring the life out of anyone listening to her.

I do! Man that was ridiculous.
And that was not the Sr Lanka under Arjuna Ranatunga. Neither is Sanath Jayasuriya a semi literate man who won't understand what's being said to him. And Glenn McGrath, while one of my favourite bowlers ever, we've seen him being involved is some despicable behaviour and clashes on the field even before and after that incident.

Having said that, Glenn McGrath still remains my second favourite fast bowler ever after Allan Donald. I just utterly despised the way he used to behave on the field.

Ravi Shastri said "you heard it from the horse's mouth"

Hopefully he now has to issue an apology & Adam Gilchrist will call him a great man

Who then has to apologise for assuming his gender
