'Need to Guide Him, Play for a State With Proper Structure': Ex-IND Bowling Coach on Umran Malik

Umran Malik, the speedster from Jammu was arguably one of the hottest prospects among India’s fast-bowling unit. But after a brief run in the international circuit, the quick bowler has found himself out of favour and the former India bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey talked about what needs to be done to revive his international career.

Mhambrey suggested that Umran needed some guidance and a proper structure around him to ensure that he could flourish doing what he does best.

“We need to guide him. He needs to play for a state which has the proper structure. Unfortunately, he is playing for a state where there is no proper structure”, Mhabrey was quoted by Sportstar.

The former Indian bowling coach believes that playing for a state association with a proper structure around them would ensure that the quick bowler would be playing cricket regularly.

He added, “Playing for a state with a proper structure and playing a lot of cricket will help him. We need someone to make that call for him and make sure that he plays for a state where he plays a lot of cricket”.

Umran Malik has not been in the best of form even in the domestic circuit. In the Ranji Trophy, he isn’t amongst the top 100 in the wicket-taking charts which showcases his dip in form. His performances in the Indian Premier League have also been disappointing with him only being able to make a lone appearance for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 season.

But Mhambrey still believes that the fast bowler has a lot to offer but just needs guidance and support from the right people to help revive his career.

“He has the potential, a quick guy who can bowl in the mid-140s. consistently, but someone to guide him at this stage and say, okay, fine, just play cricket and how do we take this, take his game forward”.

Mhambrey even suggested that some of the other fast-bowling prospects have faced similar issues and suggested that they might need to handle them smarter, keeping work-load management in mind.

“Others like Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi have been lost in all this and maybe overlooked by the associations or over-bowled by the associations,” he commented.

“Over-bowled is perhaps the right word, and that’s a little concern because a lot of these guys, when they come into the India team, are burned by their state teams. So we have to be a little smart with them,” he concluded.

He is tennis ball player.

I have seen him here play many times in local one over two over games which are quite popular here.

I don't think he can be a hard ball player. He has started playing hard ball quite late.
from where are you

Jammu and Kashmir. He was the most popular tennis ball player in Jammu especially for one over two overs matches.

He is popularly known as ghajni his nickname. He used to go to the school where one of my close friend used to go.

Ahh my fellow Bharatiya poster. 🇮🇳

Hope you have brothers or cousins who can fly the tricolour with pride on the international arena like Umran did.

In a country of 1 billion even if you have made it to FC level + IPL then you can consider yourself a success.
True, he may never match the expectations fans have, but he has done very well for himself. A winner.

Umran's height is a disadvantage for him. His only plus is pace. So he cannot afford to drop his pace. If he bowls at 140 to mid 140s that doesn't cut it. Lot of bowlers do that. It has to be mostly in the range of 150 kph.

Umran malik 178 cm
Jasprit 178 to 180
Shami 173 cm
Siraj 178 cm

Prasidh 188
Harshit 188 189 cm

So no height not a disadvantage. What you mean is his style of bowling.

He needs to either try and be waqar esque and aim for stumps or just be an enforcer. Bowl fast and hard for as long a possible.

He is a hip dominant bowler. He is also a rhythm bowler. He needs to steam in to generate pace.

From what I heard there are some players in local circuit here.

Abdul samad and umran helped those players to get audition with these ipl franchises and they went there and showed those scouts what they are capable of. (No one's been picked up though) But they showed their talent.
I heard it an year ago.

Fast bowler Umran Malik was ruled out of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League on Sunday, March 16. Umran, who made his name in the IPL as the fastest bowler that India has ever seen, was set to play for Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Kolkata-based franchise announced just a week before the IPL 2025 opener that the pacer had been ruled out of the season due to an injury and was replaced by Chetan Sakariya. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer saw a meteoric rise in stature in the 2022 season, where he picked up 22 wickets from 14 matches. This performance also helped him earn a debut with the Indian team. However, Umran's lack of discipline with the ball, mixed with injuries, saw him slowly fade out of the Indian team and then in the IPL.
