Back for Hampshire in the County Championship vs Gloucestershire - look at his figures

Cannot believe the selectors binned Abbas the first chance they got, and continue to persist with absolute rubbish in the current Test squad.

Everyone is a genius with hindsight. The fact remains he is ageing, too slow for internationals and has more or less been figured out at the top level, hence his stats falling off a cliff.

Matthews and Chandimal would have neutralized him by standing out of the crease. There's only so much you can do at 120kph. Abbas was a different deal 5 years ago though.

First chance they got? Are you serious?

He has been beyond toothless for 3 years now.

Which 'absolute rubbish' are you talking about here?

For 3 years?

Are you just being a troll or just blind? He's had 2-3 tours where he hasn't taken as many wickets as he did previously, but if people like you actually watched the games you'd have seen how unlucky he was.

So instead of making idiotic replies to me, atleast pretend like you watched the games.

:))

Except my arguments aren't hindsight. It's what I've been pointing out since the introduction of Naseem in the Test side.

The 'he's too slow for internationals' is hardly anything new either. He's been the same average pace since he debuted.

Lolwut? 2-3 tours? That's an entire away SENA cycle and he was rubbish everywhere without exception.

I don't need to pretend, I was unfortunate enough to watch his pathetic performances every time.

Since 2019: Grand total of 29 wickets in 13 games. That's beyond mediocre.

Averaged infinite (wicketless) vs Australia.
45 vs NZ
48 vs SA
36 vs Eng

Stats only tell half the story tho. He is beyond hopeless with the old ball, not that he is doing magic with the new one either.

In England, in the 1st test, when buttler woakes onslaught was on, he looked worse than a part time spinner when Azhar brought him on.

In west indies, in the test Pakistan lost, Babar couldn't even trust him when we desperately needed a wicket and for good reason.

His only decent series in last 3 years was vs Lanka at home, when teenager Naseem still outbowled him.

There's zero merit in the case you are trying to make.

Currently 0/14 in 4 overs against Northamptonshire

A little underwhelming for Abbas

1/49 in 16 vs Northamptonshire when they were bowled out for 175

Excellent figures for Abbas today:

17-5-32-4

Hampshire beat Northamptonshire by an innings and 4 runs

English pitches are tailor made for bowlers like Abbas. He doesn’t have the pace but his line and lengths are immaculate.

Ends up on 4/68 - another brilliant performance.

This guy needs to be in every test squad that we pick. He won't always be needed but whenever we tour England, South Africa or New Zealand or when there is cloud cover, he's a world class bowler.

Why not invest in some younger Irfanullah who's similar pace is taller and can move the ball.

Excellent effort from Mohammad Abbas this season in the County Championship:

Wickets 50
Average 17.62
Strike-rate 44.90

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce that Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has committed his future to the Club by signing a new two-year contract.

Abbas will now remain at The Ageas Bowl until at least the end of the 2024 season.

Mo first arrived at the Club in 2021 as an overseas signing for the LV= Insurance County Championship and made an instant impact. In just his second match, Abbas took a six-wicket haul on his way to match figures of 9-39 against Middlesex at The Ageas Bowl.

In the 10 matches he played in that first season, the pace bowler racked up 41 wickets – the joint second highest in Hampshire’s ranks – at an average of just 15.87.

Abbas returned for the 2022 LV= Insurance County Championship and teamed up with fellow fast bowlers Kyle Abbott and Keith Barker to form one of the most impressive seam-bowling attacks seen on the county circuit.

In total, the trio took over 150 wickets between them in this year’s competition, 50 of which came from Abbas, as Hampshire finished third in Division One.

The 32-year-old had the most impressive average, 17.62, and economy rate, 2.35, of all Hampshire’s bowlers in 2022, featuring in 12 of the Club’s 14 games in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Overall, during his time at the Club to date, Abbas has played in 22 First-Class matches taking 91 wickets at an average of 16.83, while also boasting an impressive economy rate of just 2.24.

Mohammad Abbas said: “I’m very pleased to have signed a new contract and to be staying with Hampshire for two more years.

I’ve loved my time at The Ageas Bowl and am looking forward to helping the team push for silverware in the LV= Insurance County Championship.”

Giles White, Hampshire Director of Cricket, said: “Mo has been a big influence on the team. Since his arrival he has been both an incredible performer and a fantastic role model. To have him around for the next two years is a major boost to the squad.”

The best way to see Mo and the rest of the Hampshire squad in action in 2023 is with a Hampshire Cricket Membership, granting the ultimate access to Hampshire and Hampshire Hawks’ endeavours.

2023 Members also receive access to an exclusive allocation of tickets for next summer’s England Women’s Ashes ODI against Australia and the otherwise sold-out England Men’s ODI against New Zealand, alongside a whole host of other exciting benefits.

Built for county cricket... Hope Hampshire are paying him accordingly! Wonder what foreign county cricketers earn per year... I'd imagine around 100k region...

This is remaining level. International players neutralized him by standing outside the crease. They know that they just need to see him out and go after the other bowlers. His inability to take wickets and penetrate creates pressure on the other bowlers to strive for wickets and they end up leaking runs in the process.

SpiritOf1903 Abbas's level is county. International he can be negated because of his slow pace. Batters just stand out the crease n they know once his new ball spell is done. Abbas is toothless. He isn't a wicket Taker at the International level now.

But I hope he carries on getting that domestic money from England to provide for his family.

He is very good in English conditions.Has an excellent record in county cricket. On flat pitches he is not threatening because his pace has dropped. Some people think the standard of county cricket is low.It is not true.Remember players playing for English national team are products of county cricket. They became good players by playing country cricket.Past Pakistan players got good experience by playing in counties.Imran,Misndad,Zaheer,Sadiq,Asif Iqbal,Mushtaq Moh,Mushtaq Ahmed,Waqar and many others played county cricket.

Abbas has been ill treated.

He is no longer the abbas of pre 2018 but he is still capable of being a good work horse seamer. If he can regularly bowl 1-2 for 60 in 25 overs he will add a lot of value for the more attacking seamers in the team like Shaheen, Naseem and Haris when he plays tests.

Alternatively, his lack of penetration and miserly bowling will put pressure on the other seamers to strive for wickets and they will end up spraying the ball as a result.

There is a reason why Abbas was benched, he was useless in New Zealand, Australia. Even England managed to neutralize him by standing outside the crease to him.

Pakistan did well to move on.

The options we have for the England squad are limited so il definitely pick Abbas over Hassan Ali.

An excellent county pro who deserves his contract but he should never play for PK again. Look forward, not backwards

Unless you watched a different Abbas from me, he was awful towards the end of PK spell. Move on

True pro never complained when he got benched. Lost pace over the years so carried on playing county cricket with a smile on his face.

Probably had his days at international level so doing the right thing making money in county cricket for his family.

If only some of our other ex players learnt a few things from Abbas they wouldn’t get legal notices sent to them.

PS on another note i think Kammi V Rambo at the qaddafi stadium over 6 rounds would make a great match.

Abbas is unplayable in English conditions at the start of the season.Later on when the weather gets hot and pitches are dry then he is not as menacing due to lack of his pace but still managed to get wickets.Imagine if his pace was around 135kph,he would have bowled teams out single handedly every time

Nothing new here, he always tears up these conditions.

Stats from Abbas' bowling this morning:

5 overs
3 maidens
3 wickets
9 runs conceded

Mesmerising.

Ends up with 3/67, match figures of 9/116

Abbas seems to have improved he’s absolutely smashing it in England county. Pakistan should think of bring him back in the test match team bearing in mind the cupboard is dry in terms of bowling talent in tests

Hes not improved Hes just suited to these early spring conditions in england where theres something in the air and off the pitch

Hes still bowling in the 120 km range and on most pitches around the world hes not gonna threaten at all with his lack of pace

I saw a funny anecdote on Wisden Cricket about Abbas and Pep Guardiola.

Apparently part of Abbaa contract is he gets the premier suite penthouse in the Hilton hotel at Hampshire.

Man City were playing Southampton and City requested whether they could have the penthouse suite for 2-3 days for Pep.

Hampshire refused and told Pep to jog on :))
