Journalist arrested for allegedly killing wife in Rawalpindi

A journalist working for a private TV channel has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Rawalpindi's Yousuf Colony, it emerged on Wednesday.

According to the FIR registered at Airport Police Station by the victim's sister, the incident occurred on June 29.

In the complaint, she stated that the suspect, identified as Ali Salman Alvi, called her from her sister's phone at 2pm saying that he was "ruined" and the victim, identified as Sadaf Zahra, had "done something", before hanging up.

She rushed to their home, along with her husband and mother, where they found the suspect standing at the main door while the rest of the doors had been locked from the inside, the FIR said.

She added that the suspect then led them to their room where they found Zahra's body hanging from the ceiling fan by a bed sheet tied around her neck and a ladder lying close by.

The victim's sister alleged that the suspect had beaten her sister on multiple occasions, despite being warned repeatedly. She urged the police to investigate the incident.

Speaking to Dawn.com, Airport Police Station SHO Jawad Shah said the accused was arrested the same day the incident occurred under Section 302 (murder or Qatl-i-Amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code and was currently in police custody on physical remand.

He said that the deceased's autopsy report was still awaited, after which it will be concluded whether she was a victim of domestic violence.

The incident was highlighted on social media on Wednesday as citizens demanded justice for the victim, who had previously spoken up about domestic violence on Twitter.

Replying to the victim's Twitter thread, Digital Rights Foundation Director Nighat Dad said that the victim "who did an entire thread on domestic violence was a victim of domestic abuse herself".

Lawyer Khadija Siddiqui urged the authorities concerned to ensure the suspect was brought to justice.

Meanwhile, journalist Asma Shirazi said she was was "shocked and numbed" the moment she got to know about the incident. She added that the media group she was working with strictly condemned the incident and had terminated the accused.

Earlier today, Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari said that a bill for domestic violence will be tabled in the National Assembly today (Wednesday).

In a tweet, she said: "The Domestic Violence (Protection and Prevention) Bill 2020 prepared by [human rights ministry] and approved by CCLC and cabinet will be tabled today in NA."

On twitter people trying to blame PTI and Imran Khan because this guy used to tweet in their favour. Matlab the lengths people would go to abuse IK.

Yesterday a party was DIRECTLY accused of harboring terrorists and spies, not a peep from these folks. Yet some guy who supports PTI and turns out to be a wife beater, then IK is to blame.

He couldn't walk the talk. Filth.

The post-mortem report of Sadaf Zahra, who was allegedly killed by husband journalist Salman Alvi, has put asphyxiation the likely cause of her death in its initial findings.

The authorities, investigating the case, received the post-mortem report of Zahra today.

According to the report, the 38-year-old died at 2pm on June 29 at her residence in Rawalpindi.

Sadaf Zahra’s right cheek has a mark, while her lips were swollen and face bore blue bruises, the post-mortem report revealed.

It further said that the samples of the liver, kidneys, and stomach have been forwarded to a forensics lab.

The report said that the final report determining the cause of death will be compiled after the findings from the forensics lab.

Salman Alvi under arrest
Rawalpindi police had arrested journalist Salman Alvi late last month.

The arrest came after his sister-in-law, Mahwish Zahra, registered a case against Alvi, accusing him of killing her sister and covering it up as a suicide case.

Mahwish said in the complaint that she had rushed to her sister's place in Yousuf Colony, along with her mother and husband, after she received a call from Alvi telling her that "Sadaf has done something to herself".

When she arrived at her sister's house, Alvi opened the front door and all other doors in the house were closed. She opened a room in the house to find her sister hanging from the ceiling fan.

She said that her sister had complained of domestic abuse several times before her death.

Social media demands justice
The case got attention on social media, with hashtag #JusticeforZahra trending on Twitter.

Alvi was working as the producer of a current affairs programme hosted by anchor Asma Shirazi. After another journalist pointed this out, Shirazi responded by saying that he had been fired after the thread detailing his alleged domestic abuse had been shared on Twitter.

"I was shocked and numbed the moment I got to know about the incident and FIR, not just myself but media group I’m working with strictly condemned and terminated accused," Shirazi tweeted. "Read Sadaf’s thread in morning whom I never met but am heartbroken. #RIPSadaf Justice must prevail #JusticeForZahra."

Forensic expert says suicide note found near Sadaf Zahra was penned by her

A forensic handwriting expert has shared that the suicide note found near the body of the wife of a TV producer in Islamabad was written by herself.

On June 29, TV producer Ali Salman Alvi's wife Sadaf Zahra’s body was found inside her house in Rawalpindi. She was found hanging by the neck in her room. A suicide note was also found in her room.

Following the death of Zahra's, her sister alleged that Alvi had beaten his wife on multiple occasions. Police had later booked him and currently, he is on judicial remand.

A handwriting expert at the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory has said that Zahra’s husband did not write the note, local media reported. A police spokesperson said that the cause of Zehra’s death has yet to be ascertained as they are waiting for the forensic reports and the autopsy report.

Evil.

This man should get death penalty (if found guilty).

If you don't like your wife and things aren't working, go for divorce. No need to go beyond that.
