Pakistan U19 beat South Africa U19 by 17 runs in the opening 50-over match

Lahore, 22 June 2019:

An all-round performance from Abbas Afridi helped Pakistan U19 beat South Africa U19 by 17 runs in the first of the seven-match 50-over cricket series at the Chatsworth Cricket Oval in Durban on Saturday.

Abbas Afridi and Naseem Shah took two wickets a piece for 44 and 45, respectively, as the hosts were restricted to 209 in 50 overs. Bryce Parsons scored an unbeaten 64-ball 57 with one four and two sixes.

Luke Beaufort (46) and Jonathan Bird (40) were the other notable run-getters.

Earlier, after electing to bat, the tourists scored 226 for nine in 50 overs. Haider Ali scored a 52-ball 60 and hit eight fours while Basit Ali scored 28 off 56 balls and hit two fours. The duo added 101 runs for the first wicket.

Abbas Afridi contributed with an unbeaten 53 off 68 balls and struck five fours and two sixes.

Bryce Parsons and Lifa Ntanzi took two wickets each, conceding 24 and 59 runs, respectively.

The second match of the series will be played on Tuesday at the Pietermaritzburg Oval in Pietermaritzburg.

Abbas Afridi recorded an unbeaten half-century and claimed two wickets to lead Pakistan to a 17-run win over the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s in the opening Youth One-Day International at the Chatsworth Oval on Saturday.

The victory gives the visitors a one-nil lead in the seven-match series.

Man of the Match Afridi scored a crucial 53 (68 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) at the backend of the innings to help guide his side to a competitive 226/9 before ending with figures of two for 44 in his allotted 10 overs in the successful defence of their total.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl, the SA under-19s began on the back foot following Pakistan’s opening century stand between Mohammad Ali (28) and Haider Ali. The latter raced to 60 off 52 deliveries (8 fours) before the home side took the game by the scruff of the neck, taking eight wickets at the expense of just 49 runs.

The collapse was inspired by Bryce Parsons (2/24), who’s two quick wickets after the first drinks break was complimented by scalps from Lifa Ntanzi (2/59), Gerald Coetzee (1/46), Achille Cloete (1/34) and Micheal Copeland 1/26) while Tiaan van Vuuren (1/32) also chipped in.

With his side reeling on 150/8, Afridi teamed up with Naseem Shah (23) to record a substantial 69-run, ninth-wicket partnership to carry their side into the break with their tails up.

In reply, South Africa’s effort with the bat was curtailed by economical bowling from the sub-continent outfit. Despite limiting the opposition’s wicket-taking opportunities throughout the innings, the required run-rate began to get away from the hosts.

Contributions from Jonathan Bird (40), Luke Beaufort (46) and a valiant half-century (57* off 64 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes) from Parsons gave them a glimmer of hope but the pressures of a climbing run rate and regular inroads made by Afridi and Naseem Shah (2/45) ensured Pakistan got over the line, restricting the SA under-19s to 209/9 after 50 overs

SA U19s to take positives from series opener into second Youth ODI

Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s assistant coach, Siya Sibiya, believes the team has taken a few positives from the series-opening defeat against Pakistan as they prepare for the second Youth One-Day International (ODI) taking place in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

Despite falling 17 runs short at the Chatsworth Oval this past weekend, the hosts were on top at various stages of the game and Sibiya thinks that the team can build on that front, particularly with bat in hand – which was one of the focuses of the pre-match preparations.

“It’s a nice base for us to work from,” he said during the side’s training session on Monday. “We weren’t 44 for four, which is generally the trend with SA U19s, with guys having not played in a little while and being off the pace. So, I thought the batters were sound enough, they really worked hard towards our indexes of performance but a pity no one went on at the top, it would have been nice to see someone kick on. You must give credit to the opposition, they bowled well in the middle overs, they squeezed us and set smart fields.

“In our preparations today, we worked towards countering that and do the things that we did well, more regularly and hopefully the boys can take a lot of positives from that and look to go and execute better in the next game,” Sibiya added.

In the first game, Pakistan posted a competitive total of 226/9 in their 50 overs after half-centuries from Haider Ali (60) and Abbas Afridi (53). South Africa replied with a hard-fought 209/9, with Bryce Parsons (57* off 64 balls) recording his maiden Youth ODI fifty and Luke Beaufort contributing 46 off 87 balls. The former also picked up figures of 2/24 in his ten overs, alongside speedster, Lifa Ntanzi (2/59).

When asked about the difference in the end between the two sides, Sibiya pointed out the opposition’s skill with the ball, which restricted the home side’s scoring rate to under four runs an over for much of the innings.

“At the backend of the game, they generally got the ball to reverse a little bit in those last 10-15 overs,” he said. “They bowled skilfully, they executed their yorkers and you have to take that on the chin and accept that that was a special bowling performance from their opening bowlers. Naseem Shah bowled well, he didn’t miss his yorkers, he had a good bumper and that is potentially what the difference was.

Adding to that, Sibiya also called on his players to improve on their bowling towards the end of the innings in order to shut teams out after having the sub-continent side reeling with eight wickets down in the 34th over before a crucial 69-run stand for the ninth wicket propelled them to a defendable total.

“They were 150/8 but this is not school cricket anymore, this is international under-19s. The guy batting at number 10 is probably a number six or seven in their State team. So, we must be a little more ruthless with our death skills, look to knock those guys over and be a little more aggressive and bowl some bouncers and upset their rhythm.

“Looking forward, those are the lessons we learnt from our guys and we look to be better tomorrow at those skills,” he concluded.

Mohammad Haris and captain Rohail Nazir stroked half-centuries as Pakistan U19 defeated South Africa U19 by four wickets in the second 50-over match to take a 2-0 lead at Pietermaritzburg Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

Mohammad returned undefeated on 6o, while Rohail continued his rich run of form by scoring 67, as Pakistan U19 achieved the 216-run target for the loss of six wickets inside 40 overs.

Rohail’s 81-ball innings sparkled ten fours and a six, while Mohammad, struck nine fours in an unbeaten 60 off 53 balls, both added 73 runs for the fifth wicket.

Irfan Niazi 32-ball 33 not out laced with two fours and a six was other notable contributor in the run-chase. Irfan and Mohammad added unbeaten 61-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Earlier, Naseem Shah and Akhtar Shah took three wickets apiece conceding 30 and 42 runs, respectively as South Africa were bowled out for 215 in 44 overs after being put into bat.

For the home side, opener Andrew Louw top-scored with 114-ball 91 which included 13 fours and a six.

Earlier, the match was reduced to 47 overs due to wet out-field.

The third match of the series will be played on 27 June at the same venue.

A game-changing 73-run partnership between Rohail Nazir and Haris Khan was the difference as Pakistan defeated the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s by four wickets in the second Youth One-Day International (ODI) in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

The triumph gives the tourist a two-nil lead in the series, with five matches to play.

After a delayed start due to a wet pitch, the match was restricted to a 47-over contest. The home side posted an underwhelming 215 all out in 44 overs before Pakistan replied with 218/6 in 39.5 overs thanks in main to two half-centuries from Nazir (67 off 81 balls; 10 fours, 1 six) and Khan (60* off 53 balls; 9 fours).

With the bat, South Africa made an indifferent start after they found themselves three down in the seventh over, with Akhtar Shah and Naseem Shah (3/30) exploiting the overcast conditions early on. Despite wickets falling around him, opening batsman Andrew Louw stuck around. He formed two partnerships in the thirties with Khanya Cotani (17) and Micheal Copeland (7) before combining with Gerald Coetzee (29) for a vital 60-run stand for the seventh wicket, which saw the tall Northern Cape-born batter reach his maiden Youth ODI fifty.

The right-hander then became A. Shah’s second scalp of the day, as he was eventually out for a well-played 91 (off 114 balls; 13 fours, 1 six), with the fast bowler then wrapping up the hosts’ innings and ending with figures of 3/42.

Pakistan’s outing with the bat started in a similar fashion as their opponent’s, with SA under-19s captain, Bryce Parsons (2/46) once again shining with the ball, taking two early wickets after opening the attack with Achille Cloete (2/34). Although they found themselves struggling at 28/3, Nazir teamed up with Qasim Akram (22) and Khan to help rebuild the innings, scoring at well over five an over in the middle periods.

Despite the loss of Nazir’s wicket, Khan soldiered on under the increased pressure from South Africa and found a suitable partner in Irfan Niazi, who’s unbeaten 33 propelled the sub-continent outfit to victory with over seven overs to spare.

Khan was named the Man of the Match as he finished unbeaten at the crease to see his side home.

Louw wants SA U19s to focus on team spirit and execution in third Youth ODI

Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s opening batsman Andrew Louw says the team must back each other and trust in their plans in the effort of turning the series around ahead of the third Youth One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.



Louw insists the team must focus on the task at hand, whilst trusting each member of the squad to perform their roles if they are to succeed. He also pointed out where the team came up short in Tuesday’s defeat.



“It is just about keeping a level head, knowing what our plans are and executing them as they come and it is about backing each other, “Louw said on the eve of the match. “I mean out there, it is eleven of us, but we are a big team, a big family. Out in the field are eleven guys and everyone has got to trust that the guys on the field are competent and have the skills to get the job done.



“The guys were a bit pushed back, if you could put it that way. You know you are in home conditions; you have a Pakistani team come here and they are all guns blazing. They came in the first game and hit hard, so it was always about fighting back and I think it was a matter of us getting too far ahead (of ourselves), knowing we have to win this last game to bounce back in the series, making it 1-1,” he continued.



Despite his valiant effort of 91 off 114 deliveries (13 fours, 1 six) at the top of the order with the hosts posting 215 all out, Pakistan took a two-nil lead after chasing the score down with four wickets remaining.



Louw’s contribution with the bat, a maiden half-century, was the highlight for South Africa. With wickets falling around, the right-hander had to be patient at the crease, while maintaining a suitable run rate as he helped propel the home side to a competitive total.



Louw says he was pleased with his performance in tough circumstances but also credited the opposition bowlers, including Pakistan’s key wicket-takers, Naseem Shah and Akhtar Shah.

“It was nice,” he mentioned. “In the team, we speak a lot about showing character out there and it is about standing up when things are tough. That comes with the responsibility of representing your country and when times are hard, you’ve got to dig deep, and things obviously went a bit better for me.



“It was challenging but with the challenge, you know you have to find a way to counter-punch that. Standing there, you must try and figure out a way, where you are going to score and what you are going to leave. They are good bowlers and I feel like at this level we are playing at, they are really world class,” he added.



The former Northern Cape High pupil, who made his debut in the first match of the series, captained the Northern Cape side in last year’s Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week. He believes his cricketing journey wasn’t straightforward but making the SA under-19s has made it all worth it. He credits Duane Bredenkamp, who coached him in high school since under-14s alongside Jason Brooker at under-19 provincial level and Eugene Jacobs as his mentor.



“To be honest, it came as a surprise for me (his selection), but I worked hard,” he said. “I listened to the advice that I could find around me, it wasn’t an easy journey, a lot of the times it was very discouraging. From the Northern Cape, not many people would be playing here, so it’s a massive privilege and an honour for me. It’s not something you could say ‘Hey, my mate made the SA U19 team, I could be next’, it was something that had to be self-driven.



“With persistence, hard work and the Lord’s grace, I have made it here, but it has been a hard journey and I am thankful and really privileged to be here,” he concluded.

Naseem Shah’s not playing and SA U19 has scored 270-8 in 48.0 overs this game. Previous scores were 209-9 and 215-all out when Naseem was playing.
 
In the 3rd ODI, the Pakistan U19s have bowled the SA U19s out for 276 in 49.3 overs. Abbas Afridi was the stand-out with the ball, taking 4 wickets in his 9 overs at an economy of 4.44.

Hopefully Haider Ali, Abbas Afridi, Rohail Nazir, Naseem Shah get full season of 4 day cricket this year and then U19 WC till Feb 9th and then PSL next year. That would be ideal progression for them.

PCB must make sure they get to play every 4day game this season if fit. If PSL teams can play emerging players so should domestic teams.

It would be a mouthwatering prospect to see Haider Ali opening with Babar Azam for KK in next year's PSL. However, knowing how little PSL franchises rate Pak batting talent, I wouldn't be surprised if no one from our current under 19 batsmen gets a chance in PSL.

Opener Haider Ali’s 116 and Abbas Afridi four for 40, helped Pakistan U19 to win the third 50-over match against South Africa U19 by six wickets and take a 3-0 lead in the seven-match series at the Pietermaritzburg Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

Chasing a 277-run target, Pakistan U19 achieved victory inside 43 overs with six wickets remaining. Haider Ali hit 16 fours and two sixes in his 111-ball 116 runs knock.

Haider added 51 runs for the first wicket with Saim Ayub (21), while added 102 runs with Fahad Munir (50) for the third wicket. Rohail Nazir (33) provided additional support.

For the hosts, Tiaan van Vuuren took two for 49.

Earlier, after electing to bat first, South Africa U19 were dismissed for 276 in 49.3 overs. Raun Terblanche top-scored with 110 that came off 134 balls and included twelve fours, while Luke Beaufort scored 50 off 73 balls and hit eight boundaries.

this fahad munir guy looks good on paper... leg spinner who took wicket and then batted at no4 and made a match winning 50 with haider ali .. has anyone seen him bowl/bat? any similarities to current playing cricketer? spins the ball?

The win gives the sub-continent side a three-nil lead in the seven-match series.

South Africa posted a competitive 276 all out in 49.3 overs thanks in the main to a composed 110 (off 134 balls; 12 fours) from Terblanche before Ali responded in commendable fashion, notching up a quicker than a run-a-ball ton. The opening batsman, who was crowned Man of the Match, blasted 116 runs off 111 balls (16 fours, 2 sixes) to take Pakistan to victory.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Terblanche combined with Luke Beaufort (50) to give South Africa a solid start with the willow, recording a 116-run partnership for the second wicket after Andrew Louw (3) fell early. Terblanche and Beaufort brought up their fifties, with the latter reaching his maiden half-century, coming off 73 deliveries (8 fours).

Terblanche then teamed up with Khanya Cotani (30) and Akeem Minnaar (28) for pivotal 50-run stands respectively, to help propel the youngsters to the highest innings total of the series, despite Pakistan maintaining their record of picking up wickets to hinder the flow of runs at the backend of the innings.

The mature bowling attack, led by Abbas Afridi, who finished with figures of 4/40 and Shiraz Khan (3/66), claimed six wickets in the last four overs at the expense of just 31 runs.

Tasked with a target of 277 for victory, the tourists showed their experience and began on the front foot. The first-wicket partnership went for 51 runs between Ali and Saim Ayub (21) before the centurion anchored another 81-run stand with captain, Rohail Nazir (33). The right-hander then put on another 102 runs with Fahad Munir (50) to take the game away from the home side, with the pair scoring frequent boundaries.

The breakthrough finally came in the 35th over, with the SA under-19s striking twice in two balls to remove Ali and Munir but the damage was already done, with Pakistan getting over the line with 7.5 overs to spare.

Tiaan van Vuuren was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, grabbing two wickets for 49 runs.

Could you please find out why Wasim (highest wicket taker in SL series) has not played any games on this tour?

Pakistan U19 off to a great start.
41-1 in 5 overs.
Haider Ali has scored 31 in just 15 balls so far with the help of 7 boundaries.
As I write this he scored another boundary.
One to keep an eye for the future.
