Irfan Niazi’s 122 run and Naseem Shah’s three for 44, helped Pakistan U19 beat South Africa U19 by 116 runs in the fifth 50-over match and take 5-0 lead at the Pietermaritzburg Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

Mohammad Wasim, Saim Ayub, and Amir Ali took two wickets a piece for 29, 39 and 42, respectively, as the hosts were bowled out for 184 in 38.4 overs. Johathan Bird top-scored with 95-ball 100 and hit 11 fours and three sixes.

Earlier, after electing to bat, the tourists scored 300 for eight in 50 overs. Irfan Niazi scored a brilliant 122 off 125 balls that included 15 boundaries. He contributed 57-run partnership with captain Rohail Nazir (52) for the fourth wicket.

For the home side, Siya Plaatjie and Lifa Ntanzi grabbed two wickets each.

Both teams will now move back to Durban, where they will feature in the sixth and seventh match of the series at Chatsworth Cricket Oval on 5 and 7 July, respectively.

Jonathan Bird scored a dominant hundred for the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s in their 116-run loss in the fifth Youth One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

The touring side takes a five-nil lead in the seven-match series.
Pakistan posted 300/8 in their allotted overs following a timely century from Irfan Niazi (122 off 125 balls; 15 fours) before Jonathan Bird smashed a quicker than a run-a-ball ton (100 off 95 balls) in a lone effort as the hosts were bowled out for 184.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl, the SA under-19s made a good start with the ball, picking up three wickets thanks to Siya Plaatjie (2/39) and Achille Cloete (1/66) to leave Pakistan 66/3 in the 11th over. Rohail Nazir and Niazi then teamed up for a 52-run stand for the fourth wicket to get their innings back on track, with Nazir bringing up his third fifty of the series, recording 52 off 56 balls (7 fours, 1 six).

Not looking to slow down the scoring rate, the eventual Man of the Match, Niazi, found willing partners in Haris Khan (22) and Fahad Munir (25) as the tall middle-order batsman notched up his maiden Youth ODI ton to take his side to a competitive total.

In South Africa’s reply, the youngsters lost wickets at regular intervals aside from two partnerships of 40 runs or more between Bird and debutant Heinrich Pieterse (21) and Cloete (9). The imposing presence of Bird kept the home side’s chances alive as he raised his bat for his half-century before going on the attack, hitting 11 fours and three sixes on his way to his second Youth ODI century.

Despite the valiant knock from the left-hander, the SA under-19s were bowled out with 11.2 overs to spare, with Pakistan’s Naseem Shah (3/21) spearheading the attack.

After two matches in three days, the two sides will take the field again on Friday, 05 July for the sixth Youth ODI at the Chatsworth Oval in Durban.

Van Noordwyk wants SA U19s to deliver counterpunch in final Youth ODIs

Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s bowling coach, Chris van Noordwyk, has asked his side to show a fighting spirit ahead of the two final Youth One-Day Internationals (ODI) against Pakistan, starting on Friday in Chatsworth.

The team from the sub-continent is leading the seven-match series five-nil following a 116-run victory in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday and Van Noordwyk is hoping to get the confidence back in the side with wins in the last leg of the series against a talented Pakistan outfit.

“The results have definitely not gone our way. The reality is that they are a better side than us,” he stated during the team’s final net practice. “They have got some really good cricketers; they play all the big moments and we haven’t had a counterpunch to them. The boys are trying, and I can’t fault their efforts, but we are playing against some serious cricketers. The gap between the two sides, unfortunately, is far too big for my liking and we need to close that. We must look hard at certain things, we have to look at certain combinations and our pattern of play and we have to address those issues.

“Moving forward, we have two games left, hopefully we can close the gap and get some wins because we need to get the confidence back in the camp and we need to indicate to ourselves that we are good enough at this level,” van Noordwyk added.

With the ball, South Africa has tended to start on the back foot, thanks in the main to Pakistan’s Haider Ali, who has amassed 278 runs, including two half-centuries and a high score of 116. The opening batsman looks to attack from the onset of the innings, putting the likes of Achille Cloete (6) and Lifa Ntanzi (5) under pressure, despite the pair having 11 wickets between them.

“The effort of the boys has been great. We are playing against an opening batter here, who I believe is of international class and that’s not an excuse,” Van Noordwyk explained. “He is a fine player and has come into the game and has dominated our bowlers. So, we must work on a couple of mental things and a couple of technical things. We have to start throwing a few counter punches at him and their whole batting unit,” he continued.

“From a bowling point of view, we have bowled on really good wickets, I can’t fault that, but we are also playing against an opposition that is very sound. That’s not an excuse and we have to keep working harder and counterpunch.”

With the series’ final two matches moving back to the Chatsworth Oval, where the first Youth ODI took place and Pakistan came out on top by a narrow 17 runs, Van Noordwyk is excited at the prospect of turning things around and has asked the squad to make the step up and show character.

“In the first game, we had them 150/8, we were dominating till the 37/38th over and then they got to 223 so I think the bowlers are quite comfortable with this ground. The wicket looks pretty good, so we need to assess it quickly and show a bit of character. That’s what I’m going to ask the guys; to show a bit of character. It is a different environment and hopefully we can adapt but also make sure that we go up a few notches.

“We need to put in a good performance and give the guys some confidence and allow them to express themselves and turn this thing around,” Van Noordwyk concluded.

Big big complement for Haider at such a young age. I hope he does well in U19 WC as well and gets opportunities in domestics and PSL.

When is the under 19 world cup?
 
Mentioning Haider Ali as " of international class " by another team's coach is a big statement. That I felt about India under 19's opening batsman Shaw in last under 19 WC. Is Haider Ali that good, lets hope so, only time will tell, or next year's junior WC.

Saim Ayub has been a big let down so far, both against SL and now SA. He was rated quite highly here at PP and since selectors is still carrying him after some poor performances may indicate they see something in him or maybe they have no clue at all:))

If you watch him bat, there's nothing to be excited about from what I've seen. But he's been a run machine at Under-19 level for a while now, extremely consistent. He didn't have a great debut FC season, but it wasn't bad either, and in 4/6 matches he already has 1/1 FC/LA hundreds.

Jonathan Bird has been flying very high in this series. He is the highest run-hetter in the series with 2 hundreds to his name. Has also played 1 first class match. Seems like a real talent.

Another captain’s innings from Rohail Nazir and half century from opener Basit Ali helped Pakistan U19 beat South Africa U19 by 60 runs in the sixth 50-over match to take 6-0 lead at the Chatsworth Cricket Oval in Durban on Friday.

Abbas Afridi, Amir Ali, Mohammad Amir and Shiraz Khan took two wickets a piece for 30, 47, 51 and 32, respectively, as the hosts were bowled out for 222 in 46 overs. Johathan Bird top-scored with 106-ball 112 and hit 10 fours and four sixes.

Ruan Terblanche (45) and Levert Manje (30) were the other notable run-getters.

Earlier, after electing to bat, the tourists were dismissed for 282 in 50 overs. Rohail Nazir top-scored with a 94-ball 74 laced with eight fours and a six. Opener Basit Ali contributed with 73 runs off 96 balls that included seven boundaries and a six.

The two batsmen added 146 runs for the second wicket which turned out to be a match winning partnership. Irfan Niazi also contributed with a quick fire 46 off 26 balls that included five fours and two sixes.

For the home side, Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowler with four wickets for 26 runs.

The seventh and final match of the series will be played on 7 July at the same venue.

Jonathan Bird continued his good form with a second century of the series as the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s were defeated in the penultimate Youth One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan in Chatsworth on Friday.

The sub-continent side overcame South Africa by 60 runs to take a six-nil lead in the seven-match series.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to set a score, posting a competitive 282 all out thanks to Rohail Nazir’s 74 off 94 balls (8 fours, 1 six). In the hosts’ reply, Bird stood tall again, smashing a faster than a run-a-ball hundred (112 off 106 balls; 10 fours, 4 sixes), his second in as many games before the SA under-19s were bowled out for 222 in 46 overs.

Earlier in the day, the tourists made another good start to their outing with the bat. Man of the Match Nazir and Basit Ali recorded a dominant 146-run partnership for the second wicket, the latter scoring his second Youth ODI fifty (73 off 96 balls; 8 fours, 1 six). Despite the fall of both batters slowing the scoring rate, Pakistan’s middle order made valuable contributions keep the scoreboard ticking.

Haris Khan (33), Irfan Niazi (46) and Fahad Munir (16) all added crucial runs on the board before a combination of run outs and scalps from fast bowlers, Lifa Ntanzi (2/36) and Gerald Coetzee helped make inroads and cleaned up the tail. Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, finishing with figures of 4/26 in his eight overs.

In efforts to chase down 283 for the win and to instil some confidence within the camp, South Africa made a solid start at the crease. The first two wickets went for a combined 122 runs thanks to two half-century stands between Levert Manje (30), Ruan Terblanche (45) and Bird.

The good start was then undone after another a middle-order collapse. The SA under-19s lost their next six wickets for 54 runs and were left reeling on 176/8. While the wickets were falling at the other end, the imposing figure of Bird batted on, bringing up his third international hundred in under-19 cricket, playing a phenomenal innings as he tried, in vain, to rescue his team’s predicament.

Bird was the ninth wicket to fall, caught brilliantly on the boundary, which marked the end of South Africa’s chances as Pakistan wrapped the innings up with 24 balls to spare. Shiraz Khan (2/32), Abbas Afridi (2/30), Aamir Ali (2/47) and Mohammad Aamir (2/51) were key wicket-takers for the visitors, taking two wickets apiece.

The seventh and final encounter will take place at the Chatsworth Oval on Sunday, 07 July from 09h00 (SA time)
 
Our U19 team has been consistently winning a lot of games, time to look for new players after this world cup and build from here.
 
Irfan Niazi also looks a good talent. This Pak U19 team has some impressive batsmen as well, in previous U19 WC edition our batting was almost minnow level.

Appearances are deceptive. Pakistan has won all five matches! Maybe you should focus on that!
 
Our U19 have always been great which goes to show that we have great talent. We don't have a system/people in place to groom the talent. I hope these youngsters don't fade away like many of their peers before them. We need to groom this talent and bring it to international stage.
 
Irfan niazi looks class as well. Aggressive cricketer. Maintains over 100SR and clears boundaries with ease. Hopefully PCB develops him.

Pakistan U19 are fully focused on winning the seventh and final 50-over match and with it clean-sweeping the South Africa U19 when the two teams line-up for the one last time at the Chatsworth Cricket Oval, Durban on Sunday.

Pakistan U19 had won the previous six 50-over matches by 17 runs, four wickets, six wickets, 88 runs, 116 runs and 60 runs, respectively. Pakistan U19 captain Rohail Nazir is all thrilled with the results and looks forward to win the last 50-over match and complete a clean-sweep in the series.

“The players are really performing well since last tour of Sri Lanka, and I am hopeful and excited the players will do well in the seventh 50-over match and will take the series 7-0.

“The coaches have worked really hard with us to improve our fitness and the game, and that does reflect on our recent performances in the South Africa series.”

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rohail Nazir who was named as best player of the series against Sri Lanka U19 last month scoring 320 runs in five-matches has scored 317 runs in six matches with four half-centuries.

He was declared as the best player of the match in sixth 50-over match in Durban for scoring 94-ball 74 with eight boundaries and a six.

Azam Khan coach-cum-manager of the team too was satisfied with team’s performance on the tour, and expressed that the players were all geared up to win the final match of the series.

“The players have played some exceptional cricket on the South Africa tour as it very difficult to win matches in South African conditions.

“The batsmen performance on the tour is very pleasing to see especially Rohail Nazir leading from the front, but still they have to learn on how to convert half-centuries into centuries and so on.”

Fast bowler Naseem Shah has also made a successful return in the squad as he top the list of bowlers in the series with 12 wickets from four matches with best figures of four for 52 in the fourth 50-over match at the Pietermaritzburg Oval in Pietermaritzburg.

The other notable batsmen from Pakistan U19 team are Haider Ali, Irfan Niazi, and Mohammad Haris with 287, 208 and 206 runs, respectively.

Naseem Shah is playing today.He should have been rested.Pakistan have beaten SA 6-0.Pakistan has strong line up so there was no need to play Naseem.He has just come back from an injury.

Rubbish batsmen seen him bat. Didn't see much of Haris, but seems to be an aggressive batsmen. Good to see.
 
How did this Pakistan under 19 team team do in U19 Asia cup last time they played in ?
 
excellent tour overall .... i think PCB should plan a tour to Eng or Aus for this team next...

2 inclusions i would make are the social media hyped "Kholi play type" Baloch (cant remember his first name , apologies) and the china man Mamoon Kashif ( i am sure he was u-19 , looked that way) ... both from KHI and both look good so would be good to test them out ... def drop this basit ali guy... total crap
 
Congrats With the 7-0 boys! SA u-19 surely must be a poor team, but that is not Paksitan's problem. They did what they needed to.

The real Challenge comes next now; the ASIA CUP. India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be tough, especially India.

Pakistan should play some matches against BD under 19 team, BD always has strong junior level teams and even with Afghanistan under 28 ( officially under 19 ) team . If they also do well against those teams, I will be impressed, even more.

All-rounder Mohammad Haris scored an unbeaten half-century and took two wickets to lead Pakistan U19 to a seven wicket win against South Africa U19 in the seventh 50-0ver match played at the Chatsworth Cricket Oval in Durban on Sunday and help Pakistan record a clean sweep over South Africa U19.

Chasing a 183-run target, Pakistan U19 achieved victory inside 38 overs with seven wickets remaining. Mohammad Haris hit eight fours and one six in his 55-ball 69 runs unbeaten knock.

Haris added 82 runs for the third wicket with Basit Ali (56). Haider Ali (30) provided additional support.

Pakistan captain, Rohail Nazir, who was later declared player of the series, reflecting on the series, said: “I am really happy that we are playing consistently good cricket in the last four weeks. Our team has performed well in all departments of the game, and we have completed a clean sweep in the series.

“I am satisfied over my personal performance as I was declared best player of the series in last month’s Sri Lanka series and now against South Africa.”

Earlier, after electing to bat first, South Africa U19 were dismissed for 182 in 48 overs. Bryce Parsons top-scored with 37 that came off 57 balls and included one four, while Khanya Cotani scored undefeated 36 off 61 balls and hit four boundaries.

Will take special effort to be a worse batting lineup than the one we played in last u19 WC. It seemed as number 1-11 were inspired by Misbah.

Mudassar nazar is doing fantastic job at nca also this squad is selected by him so result are here to see for every one
2017 side was also very good ,saif badar,zeeshan malik,umaid masood,shadab etc were part of it

Been 2 years and not one of those "very good" is near selection except Shadab. Saif Badar has garbage domestic record despite being hailed by Michael Holding himself as a future star.

The batch before these guys was perhaps the most productive, it has given us Babar, Sami, Imam, Nawaz, Ehsan, Sameen Gul. A few have gone on to make careers others need more development.

Indeed that badge was good

New first class structure might help these u19 promising batting talent to improve there game

We have recovered well in producing Express bowlers .We are still not producing worldclass spinner which is more worrying sign for me

There are still plenty of great spinners but the management (no doubt influenced by MA’s insistence on fast-bowling) keeps selecting darters to keep the RR down.

It’s not that we don’t have quality spinners but rather they are not being given an adequate amount of time to prove their worth.

indeed we have few but my worry is virus is now transferred to u19 cricket who are hell bent of selecting "3D cricketer".there is no single genuine spinner in this u19 squad which is pretty disappointing to see .

bit and pieces allrounder won,t help us .Junior selector need to stop this useless trend of selecting players like nawaz,hassan khan,sulieman shafqat ,shadab and develop a spinner who is very good at spin bowling
