Paul Stirling Joins Foxes On Short-Term T20 Deal
The Belfast-born opener has initially joined the Foxes for two matches as cover for Peter Handscomb – who injured his shoulder whilst fielding at Sussex – but the deal is able to be extended on a game-by-game basis depending on Handscomb’s recovery.
A seasoned T20 performer, Stirling has made 395 appearances in the format – scoring 8,492 runs at an average of 25.27 – while he has also picked up 77 wickets at 28.03 with his off-spin.
Known for his brutal ball striking, the 33-year-old possesses a strike rate of 141.01, hitting three T20 centuries – including two in the Vitality Blast during stints with Middlesex and Birmingham Bears.
Stirling also has an international T20 hundred to his name, made for Ireland against Zimbabwe in September 2021. In total, he has 3,601 runs at 27.07 in T20Is since his debut as an 18-year-old in 2009.
Upon joining the Foxes, Stirling said: “I’m really looking forward to getting out there. We’ve got two huge games coming up, and with the way the table’s shaping up we’re in a great position.
“Hopefully we can get a win or two more and put ourselves in strong contention for a home quarter-final.”
Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, said: “Paul holds immense county and international experience, which will be a huge benefit to our team at an important stage of the competition.
“He offers the ability to score quick runs at the top of the order, as well as take wickets, and we’re excited to add him to our squad.”
Stirling is line to make his debut on Friday against Notts Outlaws alongside fellow overseas signing Jimmy Neesham, while the pair will be in contention for their home debut on Saturday evening against fellow East Midlands rivals Derbyshire Falcons.
