Injured Haris Rauf to be replaced by Salman Irshad

Lahore, 28 February 2020:

Fast bowler Haris Rauf will be replaced by Salman Irshad, the right-arm fast-medium bowler, in Lahore Qalandars’ camp after the former was ruled out due to an injury in his right foot.

Haris is likely to miss next two to three HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 matches for his side.

The replacement was approved by the event’s technical committee which includes PCB CEO Wasim Khan, Bazid Khan, Marina Iqbal, Sameer Khosa and Dr Sohail Saleem.

Harris experienced pain on the inner side of his right heel after Lahore Qalandars match against Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium last Sunday. Though his scans ruled out any fracture but there certainly is stress reaction. Therefore he has been advised rest.

Salman, who comes in as a silver category player, featured in the 2018 edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League and played three matches for Lahore Qalandars.

From Lahore Qalandars

This is to inform the members of media that Lahore Qalandars' fast bowler Haris Rauf is unlikely to participate in the next few games for Qalandars in the ongoing Pakistan Super League.

Salman Irshad, the fast bowler from Rawalakot, Azad Kashmir, has been included as a replacement player in place of Haris Rauf.
Salman, also a product of LQ's Player Development Program, had represented Lahore Qalandars in 2018 PSL.

Hairs Rauf has suffered from ankle stress and has been advised some rest.

"The initial results didn't show any fracture but we have rested him as a precautionary measure as Haris is the country's asset and his fitness is the main priority," COO Qalandars' Sameen Rana stated.

Haris will remain with the squad to continue with his rehabilitation.

He didnt look a 100% even in the first game. Definitely struggling.
His replacement Irshad was tonked around last year.. Lets see if he does better this time.

All setup for Chris Lynne to put on some gas and propel the Qalandars to victory!

Qalandars hope for a change of fortune at Gaddafi Stadium

• Aaqib Javed: “I think the match against Quetta Gladiators provides us that opportunity to regain the confidence, inject some momentum and put our campaign back on track”

• Sarfaraz Ahmed: “It is good to have collected three wins from five matches, but the critical and crucial phase for us starts now”

Lahore, 2 March 2020:

Lahore Qalandars will be hoping for a change of fortune when they take on defending champions Quetta Gladiators in the 16th match of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 under Gaddafi Stadium lights on Tuesday.

Qalandars are winless from three matches to date with their six of the remaining seven fixtures now on home turf and in front of their fans. Their only league match outside Lahore will be against Karachi Kings when they will travel to the National Stadium for the 12 March match, which will be their sixth game.

Qalandars’ losing streak had started at the Gaddafi Stadium on 21 February when they lost to Multan Sultans by five wickets, which was followed by a one-wicket loss against Islamabad United two days later at the home of Pakistan cricket. In Rawalpindi on 28 February, they ended up on the losing side when Peshawar Zalmi won a 12-over-a-side fixture by 16 runs.

This has left Qalandars languishing at the bottom of the six-team points table, with their nearest rivals Karachi Kings sitting on four points with two wins. The top four sides after 30 league matches will progress to the three play-offs, followed by the 22 March final which will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium.

In contrast, Gladiators are occupying second place with six points from five matches. Their wins have been against Islamabad United (twice, by three and five wickets respectively) and Karachi Kings (by five wickets), while they have suffered defeats against Peshawar Zalmi (by six wickets) and Multan Sultans (by 30 runs).

Head to head, Gladiators lead Qalandars 5-3. The only time Gladiators won both their league fixtures against Qalandars was in 2017; otherwise the sides have shared spoils.

Qalandars coach Aaqib Javed, looking forward to the upcoming matches, said: “We have lost three games because the other sides were better than us at key moments of those matches. Let’s not forget we lost by one-wicket to Islamabad United and a reduced-overs match against Peshawar Zalmi.

“We have the experience and class in our ranks, and all we need is one strong performance to turn things around. I think the match against Quetta Gladiators provides us that opportunity to regain the confidence, inject some momentum and put our campaign back on track.

“Irrespective of whether you have won all matches or none, at this level there will always be pressure. The game is all about handling that pressure and performing when the chips are down. The stakes are high and so is the expectation level, so we need to remain positive and don’t forget the basics.

“I am hoping our top-order will soon start firing so that our bowlers have the runs to defend, it’s as simple as that.”

Gladiators’ captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said: “It is good to have collected three wins from five matches, but the critical and crucial phase for us starts now. We now need to win as many matches at the backend of the league matches as possible to secure a place in the top-four.

“We have a pretty settled side but I still feel we have a little inexperienced though a talented bowling attack as compared to last year. We have a number of options in that department, so it is also a good headache to have.

“Qalandars is a good side and I will not read too much into their three loses to date. We need to be at the top of our game on Tuesday to overcome them as we have repeatedly seen one over here and there can change a match. That’s the beauty and cruelness of this T20 format.

“No doubt majority of the spectators will be behind Qalandars and rightly so, because they are the home side. But, we will be playing our first match at the Gaddafi Stadium as reigning champions, so we will also have the crowd support. In Pakistan, we have a knowledgeable crowd who always appreciate good cricket, irrespective of who is playing.”

Squads:

Lahore Qalandars: Sohail Akhtar (captain), Ben Dunk, Chris Lynn, Dane Vilas, David Wiese, Dilbar Hussain, Fakhar Zaman, Jaahid Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Faizan, Salman Butt, Salman Irshad, Samit Patel, Seekkuge Prsanna, Shaheen Afridi, Usman Shinwari

‘He does not have a brain’: Shoaib Akhtar slams Pakistan player after mediocre show

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib AKhtar has lashed out Fakhar Zaman for being reckless and for not putting his hand up and performing for his side in the ongoing Pakistan Super League. These comments were made after Zaman, who is playing for the Lahore Qalandars, has struggled to hit any form in the competition. The left-hander has scored 74 runs in three games at an average of 24.66 and a strike-rate of 125.42.

“The person who doesn’t have a brain is Fakhar Zaman. When you have one player [Chris Lynn] who is already playing fast, then Fakhar needs to understand that he can slow down a bit,” Akhtar said in a YouTube video as quoted by Cricket Pakistan. “Chris Lynn is not some Viv Richards. Lynn plays well where there is equal bounce like Australia. He is good aggressive player, but you need just one aggressive player like that.

“Qalandars batting line-up is made up of similar kind of batsmen who just believes in senseless hitting. You can play aggressively and take chances in the powerplay, but in the next 14 overs you need to know how to anchor the innings, take quick singles and then finish well.”

Shoaib Akhtar, who never minces his words, has been critical of Zaman earlier too. When Pakistan lost to India in the World Cup clash last year, he questioned his technique and the way he responded to pressure.

What's the duration of Lahore Qalandars contract with PCB/PSL? Or does it work any different?

If they finish last this season as well, PCB should intervene.

I don't ever think I've seen a more one sided PSL match. This wasn't even a match, this was a massacre.

ISSUES
Faizan bats too low and shouldn't be bowling at the death. He used to open with the PDP and was destructive, so let him open.

Prasanna was just a waste of a pick. Awful batsman and bowler. Better off using Maaz Khan (because he didn't get a full match) or Raja Farzan, or better yet choosing someone else during the draft.

Lynn, Butt and Zaman are not firing at all. Salman Butt's poor SR was the catalyst for Lahore's loss today. Absolutely poor player.

Middle order just collapses. Lahore cannot rely solely on Ben Dunk to score the runs. This is why we need to use a suitable opener to set the standard, like Faizan. Hafeez is no longer a valuable asset in my eyes, all he does is crash and burn.

Losing Shaheen and Rauf would have been awful for Lahore, they were the leaders of the bowling department. Losing Rauf meant Irshad returned, and he hasn't been that great.

Poor draft picks. Overall, the draft as a whole was a complete nuclear detonation by Lahore. Mukhtar Ahmed, Nauman Anwar, Imran Nazir, Ehsan Adil, etc. These were all players that had valuable experience and had played either for Lahore or in their PDP and T10 league. You then had other players like Mohammad Asghar, Umar Siddiq and Sunil Narine, who all had valuable experience. Choosing players like Wiese, Vilas, Prasanna and Jaahid have backfired miserably. Retaining Hafeez and Butt instead of someone more composed like Agha Salman was another disaster, and the PDP has only found ONE genuinely great player, Haris Rauf, even though I believe that Maaz, Dilbar and Faizan can become better.

Management: Who on earth chose Sohail Akhtar as captain? He's absolutely clueless in setting a field and choosing who to bowl. YOU NEVER SEND ON A MEDIUM PACER AT THE DEATH AND EXPECT IT TO WORK. Aaqib Javed has driven this team to the ground to the point where the Qalandars are no longer respected, but are brutally mocked and often swept aside with ease by the other teams.

POTW. Its a mess top to bottom. The entire line up is horrific and not even club level.

a) The captain is completely incompetent. Can't bat. Can't make decisions. Has no charisma himself, is a completely dud at this point
b) The coach is a complete joke. According to this ***** 165 is a good total to defend. On this ground where 200 is scored easily batting first. This is the level of this guy's coaching. And the sad thing is he almost became the coach of our NT. FZ and Lynn have been making good partnerships, they were the top in terms of average this PSL but Aqib decides its going too good and brings back a certified failure who can't even play club cricket never mind T20. And who in turn ruins the chase and destroys the momentum
c) The owners, the biggest morons of all. Who thinks PSL is all about dancing like idiots infront of the camera when your team is burning and crashing and people already consider you a joke. How they can have such little self-awareness is amazing.

The franchise is a joke top to bottom. After seeing my beloved Arsenal ruin decades for me I am not sure why I am doing this to myself again.

Sohail Akhtar speaking in post match presser

"Ball was breaking a bit when we were batting and also in powerplay we could not get partnerships going, and this is the reason it was difficult for us"

"Chris Lynn plays league cricket around the world and this is his style of batting; Salman Butt's role was to hold one end and play a long innings"

"We have a 2 day gap and we are hoping that Rauf, Shaheen and Dilbar will all get fit to play; This is the reason why we had some problems in our bowling as they were our main strike bowlers; We had inexperienced bowling today otherwise we should have restricted IU to 130-140 runs"

"We felt that our bowling was weak and later on we could chase well; Also there is dew factor so we preferred to bowl first; Unfortunately it rained and the ball started to grip more which didnt happen in the first innings"

Preference of Butt over Fakhar:

"Salman Butt is an experienced player and we had this issue before that we were losing 2-3 wickets in powerplay so that's why we decided to use that experience and wanted him to play a long innings, so that good strikers can play around him"

Both Salman Butt and Mohd Amir are playing the PSL. What about Mohd Asif? has he given up on cricket? Didn't see him in any domestic competition either. Not even an interview.

I understand that the Pakistan pitches are ideal for chasing targets, especially late in the evening, and it has also been the trend in the ongoing PSL, but I think that the think-tank must take into consideration its own team, its own batting line-up and its batsmen`s ability to handle pressure etc., whilst taking the decision at the toss. Lahore should`ve batted first yesterday and should do it even in the matches to come, especially given that their only win of the season has come whilst batting first. To chase a target is just not their cup of tea. I've in fact seen this as kind of a trend in every past season as well, that every tight and well fought match which Lahore has played in have been the ones where they've batted first. Batting second, they crumble and hardly turn up to even attempt to chase a target, even if it is not any big total.

Samit Patel speaking to the press at end of day where he took this season's best figures of 4/5 in 4 overs

"Its easy to get carried away but we as a squad are taking it one game at a time and the Karachi game tomorrow will be a stronger test I reckon"

"I have never seen a wicket like this take so much spin for a T20 match; I think a little bit of conditions changed in the second innings and it didnt spin so much"

"We went about the run chase perfectly, we had 2 experienced guys to score at the rate that we needed to - Hafeez and Dunk batted well; We took the opposition on and I know it seems easy to chase 100 but dont take anything away that as tomorrow is a different day and we have to play some good cricket against Karachi"

Still can't get over Dunk`s innings from yesterday. Wow! He has got the swag and the attitude of Viv Richards mind you (not comparing them of course!). What a brutal innings!

A look at the points table now suggests that Lahore`s chances of qualifying for the play-offs are well and truly alive - their best chances ever in the history of PSL mind you. A welcome change in the tournament I would say. Really good for this year's edition.

Also, nice to see Sohail Akhtar do well. I know that he´s no world-beater but have always admired his fighting spirit. Have those days in my mind when he would stand alone for Lahore as wickets would keep going down on the other end. He´s better than many of the newbies to have played in PSL editions. Quite like him.

I'm expecting big things from Lynn, Dunk can't pull it off every time.

Qalandars’ Dilbar Hussain fined for Code of Conduct breach

• Peshawar Zalmi fined for slow over-rate

Lahore, 11 March 2020:

Lahore Qalandars’ Dilbar Hussain has been fined for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during his side’s thrilling HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 fixture against Peshawar Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

Dilbar was fined five per cent for his applicable match fee for violating Article 2.5, which reads as: “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

The incident happened in the 18th over of Peshawar Zalmi’s innings when Dilbar Hussain, after dismissing Haider Ali, reacted in a manner that could have provoked a reaction from the departing batsman.

Meanwhile, Peshawar Zalmi have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate. As this was their first offence, all 11 playing members have been fined 10 per cent each of their match fees as per Article 2.22 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.

If Zalmi are found guilty of another slow over-rate during the tournament, then it will be deemed as their second offence and each member of their playing squad will be fined 20 per cent each of their match fees.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Michael Gough, third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Nasir Husain, while sanctions were imposed by match referee Mohammad Anees.

Lahore Qalandars defeated Peshawar Zalmi by five wickets. They will now play Karachi Kings at the National Stadium on Thursday, while Peshawar Zalmi will go head to head with Multan Sultans at the National Stadium on Friday.

Lahore Qalandars Captain Sohail Akhtar speaking to the media:

"Despite my staying long at the wicket, we were about 15-20 runs short; The wicket was double paced so it wasnt that easy to bat but had we taken 2-3 catches earlier on then the result may have been different"

"All three of our main fast-bowlers are suffering from injuries; Shaheen's bowling hand has a problem, Haris's ankle is an issue, Dilbar is also carrying an injury"

"If one of our Pakistani players had played a longer innings then thing could have been different"

Question asked that LQ are risking aggravating injury to Pakistan player by playing him whilst he is injured

"Shaheen has had medical tests and has been cleared by scans etc but today his hand hit the ground which has caused pain; Before this he didnt have pain but he had some swelling; He was checked by doctors and scans done also okayed by the Board before he was played in matches"

"There is a lot of enjoyment when we play in front of a crowd; We'have had full houses wherever we have played games and this shows that the Pakistanis had been missing this sort of cricket for past 10-11 years"

"Babar Azam is a world-class player and Sharjeel Khan has shown today why he is recognized for his batting and hopefully it is a good sign for Pakistan that they are both in good form"

This team is going to surprise many people on this forum. I’m very optimistic about their chances of qualifying for the playoffs this season. They’ve done away with the policy of selecting too many high profile (read overrated) players and instead have opted for a tactically sound squad.
Well that actually aged well. I’m surprised and amused.

Chris Lynn is the latest departure from LQ squad - he is returning home due to circumstances related to Covid19

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars have included Pakistan batsman Abid Ali and Salman Ali Agha in their line-up. Both players come in as Silver category players.

Both Rauf and Shaheen are doing wonders in the National T20 Cup, each sitting at 14 wickets at a SR of 9. No other bowler comes close.

Can this year be the Qalandars year?
