[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Naseem Shah - Performance Watch for Pakistan

Impressed but not that impressed. Still think shaheen is the better test prospect.

It was his first international match and he is really young. Shaheen evolve properly with T20s, ODIs and tests.

Naseem will get better. Thing which impressed me the most was his temperament and maturity for his age and basic control on the things he wanted to do while maintaining his pace. Consistency will get better with time.

He is quick. The fastest on average speed in Pakistan right now. Has a really mean bouncer and gets the ball to seam just a little bit.

Very raw, so today's phainta was expected. Specially when there is no significant bowling leader alongside him. Will definitely get better with experience.

Very disappointing to see Azhar make him toil hard, specially when you consider the 'workhorse' of our bowling attack bowled four less overs than him.

The lad did his best without too much support for him.

It's a tough introduction to international cricket and a steep learning curve.

Give him time.

He looked wonderful for someone so young playing his first match

Best young fast bowling talent produced by Pakistan in recent years

I won’t even call it a phainta tbh

Incredible talent. Needs to be taken care of. Biggest worry with Azhar and Misbah incharge is that they will bowl him in to the ground.

Got a lot of compliments from Brett Lee and Wasim.

Hard to believe he's so polished at 16. Could be unreal in a few years.

I think people are taking it wrong Naseem is all about prodigious talent at such a young age. Talking about bumrah Shami etc is off topic in my opinion

Ishant was a genuine prodigy when he emerged. If he would have been managed properly he would have been a 27/28 average test bowler

Same was Amir, we all knew he was a prodigy. Sadly He so spent his best years serving the punishment

Whilst I agree that Azhar and Misbah will look work this kid into the ground you can’t really blame Azhar for holding Imran Khan back yesterday. He was bowling pies (as expected) and looked as if he was going to get tonked every ball.

After 2nd Test - he'll definitely play there. Don't think I have seen enough to write in details yet. Looks promising indeed, but looks had been deceiving too many times in recent days.

Has bowled well , great short ball for not so tall fastman. His wingspan helps him a lot. Hope he is not played t20 tamasha cricket , a way to kill budding fast bowlers.

Maiden Test wicket.

As much as we don't want it you and I both know he'll be there for the T20 World Cup next year

Keep overbowling him outside Asia and he will have his career ruined by injury like Mohammad Zahid and Ian Bishop.

Unfortunately when you have players like Imran Khan in the team, you end up having to overbowl everyone else

.

NCA has done a lot of work on Naseem's action. I'm sure that will continue. He was a mess not too long ago.

The figures might not suggest it but this kid is special. If handled properly, he'll go a long way!

Waqar Younis on Naseem Shah usage in 1st Test v Australia 2019

"We have to be very careful with Naseem Shah, he is very young and we have to manage him well because he bowls very quick so we cannot put too much load on him; He is the future of Pakistan so we need to use him sensibly and smartly and I thought that is what the captain did; Of course he is a wicket taker, lets not forget that, this is his first Test"

He is so quick and bowls with brain. I'm sure if managed and groomed correctly he can add a few Kph to his speed and movement as well.

He’s fast but not express yet.

He was the fastest in the game involving Starc who has been rated the fastest test bowler of the decade he does not need any more pace he just need to. improve fitness si he can keep these speeds through the year

Only bowled 4 overs due to resting him in his 1st Test. He's not injured.

Mickey Arthur "Naseem Shah did exceed expectations, I thought it was a high risk move. I thought he looked superb. Aggression - he ticks the box, he wasn't overawed by the occassion, he kept running in and got involved in stares, he had a presence and body language, with exuberance. Pace - pace is a gift and he has that in abundance. What they need to get right with him is control, I thought his control here wasn't bad at all, he didn't give many freebies away. If you get the pace, let them bowl as quick as they can then work on getting the control to where you want it. He ticked every box, I think Pakistan have unearthed a gem"

Very nice and encouraging words from Mickey!

Mickey Arthur on Naseem Shah

"The attack wasn't suitable to protect a 16-year-old in his first game because the other seamers were a 19-year-old and a guy who has played 9 Tests. It's not ideal. I understand the rationale about protecting a guy but once you pick a bowler in a Test match, he's got to be prepared to bowl 20 overs in a day. You can't protect a cricketer in a Test match. You sign the papers that you as a bowler are fit enough to bowl 20 overs a day. Are you fit enough? Can your body hold up? Can you come back and be as effective as earlier? That baffles me - but again, surely you had to pick Mohammad Abbas"

"Using a 5-man bowling attack gives you the balance, it's an attacking option and that's one way of nursing Naseem Shah through his workload problems"

Naseem looks capable of bowling 20 overs in a day, so does Shaheen. The problem in this test was that Imran Khan Sr was not capable of bowling 20 overs in a day as he bowled badly, and he lost 5 kph on average as the innings progressed, and he is already pretty slow. Naseem and Shaheen were able to maintain their speeds spell after spell, their lengths were also not effected.

I have only seen small snippets on YouTube and a poor stream, so the question I have is whether his seam position will allow movement?

Yes.
They were discussing his seam position in post match analysis and damien Fleming was very impressed .Also he is probably the only pacer in the current fc season who has made the ball talk

That is actually heartening to hear because Afridi wont be moving the ball into right handers with his seam( which basically means he wont many wickets in the long term) and Hasnain has the worse seam i have seen at any level.

Too early to make such deductions even Shaheen has just played total 8 fc games the likes of Riley meridith who are considered under developed and future Australia prospecs ave played double that.Provided they keep their head straight and work on their skills all three SSA, Hasnain and Naseem will on a different level to now in 12-18 months time

The equation for left armers is clear- no inswing, no wickets in the long term. The problem with left armers Like Afridi in particular is that the seam position is part of the wrist position, which itself is part of the action and its incredibly difficult to change( not impossible) and to change it takes incredible hard work, which few, if any of our bowlers have. Hasnain must put in a real shift and i cant see that happening. His seam position is just terrible and that means neither the Wickets or the outside edge is threatened.

Shaheen has shown ability to swing the ball back in at times. Got a few wickets in SA in LOIs with in swingers but yeah hasn’t got it going consistently yet

He has to Improve on it but he is not like Wahab who could never do it even if his life depended on it

Gets another chance and hopefully will bowl longer spells.

His ability to move the ball is away is so heartening a pakistani bowler with pace will eventually learn tio reverse and hit timber and pads but his ability to take the ball out and bring slips in to play gives me the biggest hope

Yes now you mention it, I haven't seen him bowl with a seam towards the batsmen. It has been upright so far.

Don't worry he will in due course our Pacers generally are very good with the incoming ball it's the one that shapes away that is more difficult for them Naseem inshallah will not be a one trick pony.

Naseem's two wickets today - Oshanda Fernando and Angelo Mathews.

Pakistan enjoyed a good day with the ball as Test cricket returned to the country for the first time since 2009.

Sri Lanka, who were the visitors when a terror attack led to the suspension of all international cricket in Pakistan, closed the opening day of the first Test in Rawalpindi on 202-5.

That was a recovery for the tourists, who had lost four wickets for 31 runs in slipping to 127-4.

Pakistan's bowling attack was led by 16-year-old Naseem Shah, who took 2-51.

Shah, who is playing in only his second Test and was just six years old when Test cricket was last held in Pakistan, bowled with plenty of pace and was rewarded when opener Oshada Fernando edged to first slip, before returning late in the day to remove Angelo Mathews.

Former Sri Lanka captain Mathews had put on 62 for the fifth wicket alongside Dhananjaya de Silva before he too edged to slip off Shah.

Sri Lanka, who won the toss, put on 96 for the first wicket, with captain Dimuth Karunaratne the only player to pass 50.

The match, which is the first in a two-Test series, is part of the World Test Championship, with Pakistan yet to register any points in the competition.

Regardless if you think Naseem Shah is 16 or 18 or 19. What he has shown is extremely impressive considering this is his second test and only his second innings bowling.

The total matches in his entire CAREER are

2* Tests
8 FC Matches
1 Domestic ODI
4 Domestic T20

13 games. thats it. that is his entire bowling experience. Yet he was right up there if not better than Shaheen who has played 99 games overall in his career, Abbas 193 games overall , Shinwari 174 games overall

Nice from Naseem this morning - plenty of swing - just needs to get some wickets to get his confidence going.

Absolutely fantastic just need to get his line right but grt seam position very good speeds considering its a test he has already 2 wickets should have easily got more

He went past the edge countless of times, on a good day you can pick up 4-5 wickets with little bit of luck his biggest challenge is to eliminate one boundary ball every over with expierence he can but some like Mohd Sami they never over came this problem so don't take it for granted it will happen need to word hard on this.

As I said earlier its refreshing to see Pak pacer with such a good away going ball.

Naseem is destined for big things and has a good head by the looks of it. Let's hope we don't ruin such talent as we have in the past.

A couple of catching opportunities missed off his bowling and quite a few edges gone in the gaps. Just needs to be a little tighter with his lines and lengths.

Little disappointing for the young man - not for want of trying for sure.

This is the ball that hit Dilruwan

afacecc5-c7c2-44c8-95ae-78b11444eb60.jpg

His skills are great, but when you’re this short you need metronomic accuracy to avoid haemorrhaging runs.

Naseem needs much better accuracy to survive in Test cricket, let alone thrive.

One wicket so far in this innings - has a chance to take a few given the match situation and pressure on SL

Lovely bowling today.

Wicket to wicket, a hint of reverse-swing and decent pace.

He has it in him to become a Test bowler.

But please don’t overplay him.
