Having successfully hosted around 60,000 spectators over four days of Test cricket, Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium has secured its next major match day as part of the Government’s Events Research Programme.

The men’s One-Day International (ODI) between England and Pakistan in the Royal London Series, on 13 July at Edgbaston, is one of the selected England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) major match days that is named by Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to host an increased capacity crowd.

Edgbaston will liaise with Public Health England in Birmingham to agree the final capacity and it will subsequently contact all ticket buyers with information on whether they have secured a ticket as well as the requirements for entry.

Stuart Cain, Chief Executive of Edgbaston, said: “It’s a great reward for everyone at Edgbaston, and for the city of Birmingham, that we can follow up our successful hosting of last week’s Test match by welcoming another big crowd in just over three weeks for the Royal London International.

“England versus Pakistan at Edgbaston sold out before Christmas last year. However, the final capacity will be determined once we have had more detailed discussions with the Government, with our Safety Advisory Group and city stakeholders.

“We just ask all ticket buyers to please bear with us for a few days as we will have further news to confirm very soon.”

Edgbaston’s hosting of the recent LV= Insurance Test match saw the Birmingham venue deliver technological advancements that can support the safe return of crowds including its new smart phone app with mobile ticketing, queue time checker, food and drink click and collect orders and a delivery to seat option for disabled spectators.

To secure stadium entry, all spectators were required to complete a COVID lateral flow test and to sign a medical consent form. They were subsequently asked to complete a further PCR Test within five days of their visit.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Summer is all about cricket and I’m delighted to be able to include England’s upcoming ODI and IT20 series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in our pioneering Events Research Programme.

“With thanks to our tremendous vaccine rollout and massive uptake of the NHS App we will be able to welcome back far greater numbers of cricket fans to Durham, Bristol and The Oval.

“We will continue to do everything we can to get as many as possible back watching live sport and cultural events as safely and as quickly as possible.”

The Pakistan white-ball squad has arrived in Birmingham where they will shortly depart for Derby.

Upon completion of their 3-day room isolation in Derby, the squad will be allowed to train for 7 days after which they will depart for Cardiff on July 6 to prepare for the first of 3 ODIs against England.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam prepares for the limited-overs series – 3 ODIs followed by 3 T20Is – in England. The first ODI is slated for July 8 in Cardiff. After the matches in England, the Men In Green will fly to West Indies for 5 T20Is and 2 Tests.

Babar Azam says that Pakistan have often troubled the Three Lions in the past in their home. He asserts that the conditions in England are conducive to the cricket Pakistan plays, especially for their pacers who have plenty of purchase in these conditions.

Pakistan are coming off ODI and T20I series wins in South Africa, and T20I and Test series wins in Zimbabwe. They have landed in Birmingham and commenced their mandatory quarantine. England, meanwhile, after losing in all three formats in India, have registered a T20I series win at home against Sri Lanka.

“We performed well on South Africa tour and will try to continue that momentum in England as well. England are one of the best teams in ODI cricket but Pakistan always given them tough time. Pakistan has a good record in England because pitches are good and suit our playing style,” Babar Azam said while speaking on the PCB Podcast.

On his new captaincy role as an all-format captain, Babar Azam underlined with the support of the management and his players’ cooperation he has so far had a happy time at the helm. The T20 World Cup later in the year in the UAE would be his first ICC assignment as Pakistan’s captain.

Karachi: Emerging pacer Shahnawaz Dahani is likely to be included in the T20I squad for the series against England, ARY Sports reported.

According to sources, the selection committee led by Mohammad Wasim has agreed to include the 22-year-old pacer from Larkana and the efforts have been intensified to sent him to England.

If England’s logistics problems are not solved, Dahani will travel to the Caribbean where Green Shirts will play five T20Is against the world champions West Indies after the England series.

It must be noted that Dahani was the leading wicket-taker in the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL) with 20 wickets in 11 games. He is already in squad for Test series against West Indies.

They're probably pretty tired already, PSL would have been extra exhausting in the desert.

Pakistan’s Head Coach Misbahul Haq believes that rookier pacer Shahnawaz Dahani has a bright future ahead of him.

While speaking during a virtual press conference on Sunday, Misbah said that Dahani, who was the top wicket-taker in HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six, was not part of the England tour because the team was announced before the conclusion of Pakistan’s premier T20 league.

“Shahnawaz Dahani is a future prospect for Pakistan cricket. He was part of red-ball squad in Zimbabwe. The team was announced 20 days before so he was not part of white-ball cricket but he is included in squad for West Indies Tests. He isn’t with us for England tour but will consider him, especially after being the top wicket-taker in white-ball cricket, as it seems that he has bright future ahead of him,” said Misbah.

Misbah also refrained from commenting on Younis Khan’s resignation as batting coach but admitted that the latter’s presence helped the younger players in the side.

“Look, I don’t want to comment on that. His [Younis Khan] experience was always good for these young players. This is all decided between the PCB and the coach but we now have to live with that and focus on the resources we have,” he said.

The 47-year-old also talked about Pakistan’s team combination ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup.

“Overall, I think we know the team [which will play T20 World Cup] apart from the middle-order and specifically position five and six. We have included Azam Khan and Sohaib Maqsood in the side and hopefully the next two series will help us fill this gap,” he said. “Our top four batsman and bowling lineup is more of less confirmed.”

Pakistan coach Misbah grateful for England lockdown experience

Pakistan coach Misbah-ul-Haq said on Sunday he believes touring England last year under coronavirus lockdown restrictions helped turn his squad into "a family".

Pakistan followed the West Indies in agreeing to tour England at the height of the pandemic as international cricket returned from its Covid-19 enforced suspension.

Both touring sides found themselves in a 'bio-secure' regime that restricted them to living and training on site at the Ageas Bowl and Old Trafford.

And while conditions have eased now that Pakistan are back in England for three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s starting at Durham on Tuesday, Misbah has fond memories of last year's tour.

"As a head coach I would prefer to be in lockdown!," he told reporters.

"To stay together like that helps the team. Get connected, do whatever you do, in the game room, or the team room, together, practising together, having food together, that was amazing.

"One thing obviously was that we were cut off from the outside, from families and everyone else. But that time, the whole team became a family and that actually helped us," added the former Pakistan batsman and captain.

Unlike last year, where Pakistan's matches were played behind closed doors, their upcoming fixtures are set to take place in front of spectators, with the aim of 50 percent capacity as part of the UK Government's events research programme.

"Overall, when there are spectators and atmosphere in the ground it is better. From the mental side, I think players will be a bit more relaxed," he said.

"I can feel that the situation is a bit more normal than last time. The grounds were totally empty then, we couldn't go outside our hotels, just into the ground and hotel rooms. In that regard, this time will be better."

More quotes from Misbah:

"The PSL made a few things clear - I think it is that one slot we are trying to fill, at No. 5 and No. 6, that we've had issues with. We have Azam Khan now and Sohaib Maqsood with us to see if they can, and what combination we can make with them."

"Overall, the bowling we know we have pretty much our attack. At the top of the order we have our four pretty much and their replacements. So, we know our side more or less but a couple of positions that we need to focus on over the next two series."

"We try that whatever players we have here are fully prepared and that we show confidence in them so they go out there and perform. Azam no doubt is talented although he is a little out of form recently. But everyone knows that in modern T20 cricket, the power you need at five or six, the strike rate you need, he has the potential for that. So, looking forward to seeing him, we just have to see what combination we want to go with."

"It's always a good thing that the maximum number of players are in good form and in a good frame of mind. But you learn from cricket that it doesn't matter when you have good form and runs and you still don't perform. And sometimes you're not in good form but you come with more focus, you try harder to recapture that form.

"One good thing is we have time. We have ODIs first, so we can utilise that time and then be properly prepared as we go into the T20s. Form is not something that sticks with you permanently or goes away permanently. As coaching staff and players you try and get that back and we have enough time to do it."

The 3-day room isolation for the visiting Pakistan touring party will come to an end today and the squad will start practice from tomorrow as results of both Covid-19 tests have come back negative.

Ben Stokes likely to return into the England squad for Pakistan limited over series starting on July 8th.

Why dont Pakistani players travel with their family? On these long tours with bio bubbles...having family on your side helps you mentally. Is PCB against taking wives and childrens?

Our Indian players takes their full batallion on such tours including child carers.

Shadab Khan upbeat about Pakistan living up to its potential in England series

Derby, 28 June 2021: Pakistan men’s national cricket team have commenced seven-day preparations for their white-ball UK tour with the first training session of the tour at the Incora Derby Cricket Ground after spending first three days in room isolation.

Pakistan will play England in three ODIs and as many T20Is. The ODIs are part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League and currently the two teams are tied on 40 points, with England on the second spot because of a better net run-rate and Pakistan at the third.

This is Pakistan’s fifth tour of the UK in the last six years. Overall, they have visited here 11 times for bilateral contests.

Shadab Khan, the national men’s side’s white-ball captain, is excited about the latest tour as he believes the current squad has done well in the last one year and has the desired momentum to beat the world champions.

While speaking to PCB, Shadab Khan made his intentions clear that Pakistan are in England to win.

“Surely, England are the ODI world champions, but we come into the series after playing some good cricket against them in the past.”

“The passion and love of these guys for the game is evident by the energy they have put in in the practice session today. It is great to be reunited as a team after competing against each other in the successful HBL Pakistan Super League 6.

“Of course, English conditions are different from UAE but HBL PSL 6 has given us momentum and rhythm and we would like to keep this momentum going by playing some exciting and competitive cricket.

“If you look at our squad, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq have played extraordinary innings in South Africa. Fakhar has scored two centuries in three matches, while Imam scored two half-centuries which show our opening pair is settled in this format.

“Our middle-rder is strong too with Babar Azam – who needs no introduction – and Mohammad Rizwan, who is fresh from winning the HBL PSL 6. Haris Sohail is back in the side having scored over 50 runs per innings in the UK.

“Our bowling department is beefed up by Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali, who are match winners. So we are very confident and hopeful of showing our full potential in the upcoming games.”

Tour itinerary:

25 June – Departure for Derby

6 July – Arrival in Cardiff

8 July - 1st ODI, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff

10 July – 2nd ODI, Lord’s, London

13 July – 3rd ODI, Edgbaston, Birmingham

16 July – 1st T20I, Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium has again been confirmed as part of the Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP) and will operate at 80 per cent capacity for the Royal London International (ODI) between England and Pakistan.

Taking place on Tuesday 13 July, Edgbaston will be able to accommodate around 19,000 fans, including under 16s, in the stadium bowl and hospitality lounges without social distancing as part of the research study.

All attendees will be required to show a negative COVID lateral flow test result, this is necessary for anyone aged 11 years and older, or proof of two vaccinations (first and second dose) at least 14 days before the fixture to secure entry.

Any ticket purchasers who no longer wish to attend can request a refund for all tickets in their booking via our online form and all requests must be made before our deadline at 4pm on Thursday 1 July.

Today’s announcement follows on from Edgbaston’s successful hosting of the LV= Insurance Test Match between England and New Zealand, which accommodated around 60,000 spectators (70 per cent capacity) across four days with the same spectator entry requirements.

Stuart Cain, Chief Executive at Edgbaston, said: “It’s fantastic for sport in the West Midlands that so many cricket fans will be able to enjoy another blockbuster fixture in England versus Pakistan at Edgbaston.

“The recent Test match gave us a fantastic opportunity to build a new model for large scale sporting events and I’m pleased to see elements of this first trial being carried forward for the Pakistan match. Technology played a big part in this and we will again focus on using this as a way of creating a safe environment whilst enhancing Edgbaston’s reputation as one of the best atmospheres in world cricket.”

Pakistan’s prolific wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan has opened up on fellow opener and captain Babar Azam’s strike-rate in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket, which has been a topic of discussion in the recent past.

While speaking during a virtual press conference, ahead of the three-match One-day International (ODI) series against England, Rizwan rubbished Babar’s strike-rate concerns.

“We don’t think there is an issue with Babar Azam’s strike-rate. Whenever he scores, he does it at a strike-rate of 140 plus. I will give you the example of when we chased 200 in South Africa, when me and Babar were opening, so I don’t think there is any such issue,” said Rizwan.

Rizwan conceded that Pakistan needed improvement in the middle-order, while also claiming that Sohaib Maqsood can bat effectively below the top-order as well.

“I admit that there is issue in our middle-order but we have included some new faces and have worked on our problems in that department. Hopefully, this issue will be sorted out in the next series,” he said.

“Sohaib Maqsood has played and performed well at position five and six in the first half of PSL, in Karachi, and domestic cricket as well. We gave him a specific role [in second half of PSL] where he performed exceedingly well but keeping in mind the caliber of Sohaib Maqsood, I think he can adjust at any position,” he added.

The right-handed batsman is also open to a change in his batting position, along with Babar, if needed.

“As far as me and captain [Babar] is concerned [regarding batting position], we are willing to make sacrifice for the betterment of Pakistan team if needed. We will do what suits the team,” he said.

Rizwan also brushed aside the notion that he was interested in leading the side in one of the formats.

“I’m not thinking about leading the side as I’m focused on playing solely as a player. I give my suggestions whenever it’s needed. Also, if you look at Babar’s performance, he has done really well and we have won six series in row. Babar is on his way to becoming one of the best captains in world cricket,” he concluded.

Media reports indicate that there will be a full-capacity crowd for the first time since September 2019 next Saturday, after the second ODI against Pakistan at Lord's was included in the UK government's Event Research Programme (ERP).

Ticket-holders over the age of 11 will be required to provide either proof of a recent negative lateral flow test, proof of full vaccination, or proof of natural immunity via a positive PCR test result taken in the last 180 days.

There will be no social-distancing requirements within the ground, although fans will be encouraged to wear masks while moving around.

There will be no restrictions at Lord's for attendance of Under-16s like it was in the first pilot event of the cricketing summer at Edgbaston,

The squad has been divided into two teams of 12 players with Babar Azam and Shadab Khan leading respective sides. Shadab XI has opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

Batting department did well, worrying sign that Haris , Saud and Maqsood can’t score runs gains 5he front line bowling team whereas Abdullah Shafique score a century.

Misbah doesn’t play him at 4 despite his good technique because he thinks he is the backup opener and will play only when an opener fails to perform , but gives chances to danish aziz, Asif ali lol. Shows how much of cricketing knowledge this guy has and how stubborn he is..

So according to Misbahs logic he will play Sachin only as an opener or never play. But at the same time he will have places 4,5,6 gifted to tullaybaaz gully mohalla cricketers who can’t face a intl bowler at the cost of benching sachin.

We must give chances to saud shakeel and should be given a run in the side.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has today confirmed that the Royal London One-Day International between England and Pakistan at Lord’s on 10 July, will be part of the Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP) and has been granted permission to operate at full capacity for this match.

The fixture falls before the planned relaxation of Government restrictions on 19 July and MCC has been working closely with ECB, DCMS, Public Health England and Westminster City Council on obtaining the green light to allow more supporters into the Home of Cricket for this match.

The Government's science-led Events Research Programme is conducting scientific research studies at all events to gather the evidence that will inform how crowds can be returned to live events as safely as possible. The results of studies will be used to help shape policy and future guidelines.

Strict entry requirements are in place including proof of testing, or proof of vaccination in order to allow these trials to take place safely. All attendees have been informed that the event they are attending is a research event and that it is different to other events allowed at step 3 of the roadmap.

In addition to being at full capacity, the Covid restrictions will be disapplied to Lord’s during this match, but risk mitigation measures will still be in place including Test and Trace, hand sanitisation and face coverings worn when moving around the Ground.

There has been a delay in the start of the 2nd Intra-squad practice game due to bad weather.

The squad will also play scenario-based practice games on Sunday and Monday.

In an interview Saud Shakeel said that:

Unfortunately, it is difficult to hold the match today due to the weather

The first intra squad practice match was very beneficial

Practice matches are always helpful in preparing for the series

I have played Sam Curran and Mark Wood during the matches against England Lions

I will try my best to show my abilities if given the opportunity

This basically confirms that Shadab and Nawaz would be the spinners to play the first game against England, hard luck to Usman.

Qadir should be played he may go for runs but he will take wickets.

Qadir should play ahead of Shadab, whoever decided to make Shadab the vice-captain needs to get sacked immediately.

What logic is it to make your most useless player in recent times the vice-captain of the team?

Firstly, the guy has no credible performances in the past two years and his fitness is a joke. He's spent half of 2020 injured and randomely got fit before each PSL, which isn't quite surprising. He's deluded if he thinks he's a serious batsman, because he bats like a tail-ender. I'm pretty sure Islamabad United sent him in at 4 just because they knew he wouldn't do anything down the order.

If I talk about his bowling, that alone will be a reason to drop him. What type of a leg-spinner can't take wickets? It's an insult to the art of leg-spin bowling if you aren't picking up wickets for the team. He doesn't spin the ball enough, he relies too much on the googly (which everyone's learned how to pick at this point), and he bowls way too many full-tosses and half-trackers. What's worse is that he bowls too full and asks to be hit, and tosses it up at the wrong time. He has no control over his bowling, which is primarily due to not bowling long overs in FC cricket, and also not featuring in the Pakistan Cup.

Now, the guy is very young, so he has a lot of time to improve. But at this rate, if he keeps flopping at the international level, he will get dropped for a few years once people have had enough, and that's practically the only way to get him to play more domestic cricket.

Nawaz hasn't done anything wrong in my opinion, he's performed in domestic cricket, he's taken every opportunity at the international level that came his way, and he was a key architect of our wins against South Africa on tracks that didn't support spinners.

However, an in-form Imad is better than Nawaz, both in terms of batting and bowling, which is why I think we need to send Imad to the NHPC to gain the confidence he needs to succeed.

I just wanted to let you guys know that some tickets have become available for second ODI [MENTION=131731]Lords[/MENTION] in case anyone was interested as the Match will now be played with 100% spectators capacity.

Haris Rauf speaking to the PCB:

“I am very happy to get this news in Derby and of course would take it as a motivation for this year.”

“England has always remained a challenging tour, but our bowling department is good and we will create trouble for the hosts through our bowling partnerships.”

Intermittent rain in Derby affects national cricket team's practice session.

Only the cricketers in the T20 squad continue their scenario based practice.

During this session, batsmen will only bat and bowlers will only bowl. Today only Sohaib Maqsood, Sharjeel Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Azam Khan, Emad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Agha Salman and Sarfraz Ahmed will bat.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hassan Ali, Usman Qadir, Arshad Iqbal and Muhammad Wasim will bowl in the junior session. All other players have been rested from this session.

Members of the national ODI squad also participated in a target innings of 50 overs yesterday.

Every time i see Shaheen, he has been sprinting in, whether it be a mickey mouse league, practice match or international cricket.

Surely he needs to retain some of the gas for more important games?

Pakistan white-ball squad's practice session continues in Derby, with fielding session being held for about an hour and the batsmen continuing their full net session on the side pitches - the fast bowlers and spinners have continue to bowl on the center pitch. The complete training session is expected to last for more than 4 hours today. Only a few batsmen will be netted tomorrow after which the squad will leave Derby for Cardiff tomorrow afternoon.

England duo Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler will not be rushed back from injury, says Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan insists there was no temptation to rush Ben Stokes back for England's one-day series against Pakistan and will take a similarly cautious approach with Jos Buttler.

Stokes fractured his left index finger while fielding for Rajasthan Royals in April and spent several weeks recovering from surgery before making his comeback for Durham last month.

The all-rounder has since played six times in the Vitality Blast, with a top score of 35 and eight wickets under his belt, and is currently making his first-class return in the LV= Insurance County Championship against Warwickshire.

But he will not be involved in the three-match Royal London Series against Pakistan, which starts in Cardiff on Thursday, as England favour a conservative approach over his fitness and conditioning.

He will also miss the first ODI at Lord's since his player-of-the-match heroics in the 2019 World Cup final, but getting him ready for the summer's main course - five Tests against India - is a priority.

Asked if Stokes had been considered for action this week, Morgan said: "No, not quite yet.

"The last thing we want to do is rush somebody back and jump with the level of intensity from county cricket to international when there isn't necessarily a need. We are happy for Ben to progress as he sees fit, and obviously we have one eye on the Test series as well."

Buttler is currently sidelined with a calf injury and with so much cricket ahead - including a T20 World Cup and an away Ashes tour over the winter - his case is also being handled carefully.

"We're not quite sure at the minute, but from what I'm hearing, calves can be quite temperamental," said Morgan.

"It just depends on how he feels. It's a similar instance to Ben, the priority wouldn't be to get him back as soon as possible if there's a 50-50 chance. I know he progressed his running a couple of days ago and does feel good, but things can change."

England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan has said both Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler are doubtful for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan. Buttler played the first T20I against Sri Lanka, but has missed the following five matches (two T20Is and three ODIs) due to a calf tear and it has also ruled him out of the three ODIs against Pakistan. On the other hand, Stokes missed the series against Sri Lanka as he recovers from the finger injury he sustained in Rajasthan Royals' opening IPL fixture.

Funny how these injuries don’t occur when the IPL is about to start.

Weather for England vs Pakistan ODI & Twenty20 series 2021

Just looking up at the weather forecast, it seems ECB knew matches would rained off and hence they selected a weaker side to face Pakistan.

Jokes apart, the weather doesn't seems to be that promising at all for the following week. Unless someone who lives in England can tell better if it changes dramatically within hours.

The weather this summer has been horrendous! So depressing, thank God England are still in the Euros for us to look forward to something at least

English summers for you I guess.

Indeed! today was forecasted to rain throughout the day in Birmingham but it hasn't been that bad, and has been dry enough to last a T20 game.

Looking forward to a team score of 300 in this T20 series...

That would cause a flutter of worry in the hearts of most Pakistani fans

Ben Stokes not named in the squad, surely he could manage T20 if he could do ODI.

This is the problem with the team. Too much bhai, bhai, yaar when cricket is a professional and ruthless game. A lot of non-performers in there. Kohli in comparison as Indian captain has taken some ruthless decisions in the best interests of the team and Pakistan on a disasterous tour has played the same eleven regardless of performance.
