[VIDEOS/PICTURES] The sorry state of Pakistan sports journalism

Is this coming from the same "pleasant moment in the match" journalist?

I believe this is that 'moment'

Mobile phones going off during pressers.
Rudeness to players
Rudeness to officials
Talking over players at press conferences.

Sad state of affairs with some Asian cricket journos.

The reporter who asked Dickwella the question has some history:

During the 1996 World Cup (14th match against South Africa in Karachi), the same reporter was called a buffoon by England captain Mike Atherton for asking the same questions.

"Will someone get rid of this buffoon?", Atherton had said.

So first ask a young man if he remembers his late mother and then when he breaks down and leaves, get a video of him as well....

This is Naseem Shah leaving the presser clearly upset.

What the hell is this journalist doing? They deserve to be given a juta maar. Shameless.

I hear from several former and current players about Pakistani journalists telling them not to do interviews with PakPassion.

Pretty sad and low behaviour really.

That will make PP lose players for one city, that's bad but surely players from other areas wouldn't mind being heard on a platform like PP.

We don't lose them, because the players still do the interviews with us and ignore the people telling them not to speak with us :)

Jealousy can do strange things to people.

It isn't just jealousy with you. It's the fact that they considering themselves kingmakers of Pakistan cricket, In the past they have successfully architected and ran media campaigns against coaches, captains, deserving players that deserved to be in the squad ahead of the guys from their city.

The more you know them the sicker they make you. My memory goes back to so-called cricketing journalists of '80s and '70s of Pakistan that I have read for the most part of my life, they were absolutely no different than the bunch that you have had to unfortunately deal with.

Isn’t stokes indirectly implying and these guys on geo just reinforcing what many Pakistanis think... that Pakistan is superior and can never lose and there are outside forces out to get them.
So what’s the issue here I don’t understand. They are saying what has been discussed on multiple threads and Pakistan fans here are convinced that they would have won the 2019 World Cup with their team was robbed by India. Even basit Ali and Waqar Younis said the same thing. These guys on geo are saying it directly.

A journalist at the press conference today asked Naseem Shah if he has any plans for marriage. :23:

Interesting point you make and a valid one.

The issue is that there are so many rivalries, egos, city rivalries and agendas. What a mess it is.

PCB media department need to start putting together a ban list.

I'm all for a free press but nonsensical questions like that should mean you lose your accreditation.

Teased Naseem about this.

I think he was shocked that a journo asked him this question at a cricket-related press conference :)

So, I attended the Azhar Alil press conference yesterday online.

Before Azhar arrived, there were arguments amongst the Pakistani journalists, which could be heard by everyone. Then during the press conference some journalists were not muting their microphones so you could hear their conversations and their kids screaming in the background.

Then to top it off, there was an argument between one of the journalists and the PCB media guy, because the journo wanted to ask more than one question.

Highly unprofessional!

Sorry to hear this. There’s a very strong need for these journalists to adopt professionalism and be more cognizant of their roles. It’s a bad look to all watching from outside as well as lowers the credibility of both their questions and their publications.

Never a critical question.

Always letting the cricketers give prototype answers.

The press is simply an outdated medium these days, bought and paid for.

The reason for this are questions like

1. Will you also do parchi selections?
2. Why are you copy/pasting pictures of stats on this presentation
3. Is Babar Azam mentally injured?
4. Why has Haris Sohail been selected for the series? [Blank 'WTH' look from Wasim towards journo, then after 1 min realizes that should be Haris Rauf]

Here’s another: “You’ve selected all the players that the media wanted, is this just to shut us up?”

Okay so I have a funny story to tell.

I have this weird habit to go see FC matches whenever I have some free time (even for just 1 hour) when they are taking place in Islamabad. I like the calm atmosphere and some good old fashioned quiet cricket which reminds me of old times.

So it was 2018, I came across a journalist from some newspaper I hadn't heard the name of, showed me his badge, and said I can help you meet all the famous cricketers if you want to. First I saw him almost stuck to Umar Amin, but then Umar Amin told him to let go and drove off. He then came to me and said, let's go to another ground where there is another FC match taking place, I will help you meet other cricketers. I said I don't have much time, I am going home, but he kept insisting me to go but I kept making excuses, then by the end he said, if you are not going to go to another ground, please give me some money. I was like what the heck! I just sat in my car and drove away.

Just tells you obnoxious some of the so called journalists in Pakistan are.

Not to mention the propaganda makers who use their so-called-fame to launch campaigns against cricketers or board people.

Our journalist reflect the mentality of our
population. These people wouldn’t have jobs if there was no one listening to them and their masala **.

Guys - please leave this thread for discussion on journalism

Selection matters etc can be discussed on other threads.

Thanks

Journalism was so honest and honourable thing to do in past now they compete with drama serials and soap operas

The problem is with the PCB allowing some of these idiots access to press conferences and to interview players.

These guys just want to stir up trouble and cause problems for PCB yet the Board just goes along with them and allows them to do whatever they want.

Some sit on tv mocking Wasim Khan's accent, some sit on tv making all sorts of accusations, yet the PCB still gives them access.

There is no idea of politeness in these people.

In fact the ruder you are, the better "street cred" amongst fellow journalists - which is a shame for a society which prides itself about manners etc

yes definitely. people with very little conscience.

Too many are after scandals instead of reporting facts.

It's as if they try to outdo each other when it comes to masala news.

Also there are long-running battles going on between television channels and the PSL has increased that rivalry because different channels are backing different PSL teams and therefore they try to create fake news about players from the teams who are backed by rival television channels.

Is it still the same old journos in press cinferences or are there any new faces emerging? Also, if there are new journos, do they ask good quality questions?

So an "enterprising" journalist makes up a story about Hafeez not wanting to play for Pakistan and news spreads like wildfire

We ask the person concerned and he tells us:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Sources close to Mohammad Hafeez say he has always put playing for Pakistan first and is ready to work with both the organisers of the T10 League and PCB regarding his upcoming availability and in line with Covid-19 protocols <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/PAKvSA?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#PAKvSA</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/T10?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#T10</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Cricket?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Cricket</a></p>— Saj Sadiq (@Saj_PakPassion) <a href="https://twitter.com/Saj_PakPassion/status/1350769678046658568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 17, 2021</a></blockquote>

I remember a few years ago, all of KK players were told by their franchise to tweet in support of t10 league.

The same journalists coin the terms of different city lobbies. If I am not wrong, some "moles" in PCB also feed these so called journalists with either secret info or ongoing conversations.

And for pure comedy - we present to you the Quinton de Kock press virtual conference:

1. Being called de Kock

2. Uncontrolled shouting leading to this from the CSA media manager:

"Everyone needs to keep their monitors and computers muted for the entire duration of the press conference with the exception you are asking a question; If you do not comply with this rule, I will be forced to remove you from this press conference"

3. And a specific warning for one Pakistani journo:

"Mr. [name of journo], your mute button needs to start working, I have muted you a couple of times now - please mute yourself otherwise I will be forced to remove you from the pc"

4. Questions like How do your rate Babar amongst Root, Kohli and Williamson - no dont say they all have same qualities - give me an honest answer....

Yeah some of interactions are downright disrespectful like asking Quinton give me your honest opinion.
Indian journalists are also like this, but now with players like Kohli and Dhoni they need to be careful. BCCI will outright ban them if they pull such a stunt.

Embarrassing State of Sports Journalism in Pak

Didnt have high hopes to begin with but saw the presser of M. Wasim today and the hopes dived down further

The reporters had no question but Hafeez , Wahab and Fakhar... i mean really?

Dont know who he was but this one guy was arguing why Fakhar and Wahab are not in the team and if Wahab is being treated wrong similar to Amir

I mean seriously? do these guys even watch any international games?

Wahab was (cant think of a civilized word) , that bad in NZ

Fakhar couldn't get runs at home against Zim.

and these guys still question about them...

I mean seriously?

Another stupid question asked today from Nabi.

The journalist name was Mohammad Idrees, he kept asking political stuff and Nabi said to him straight plz stay to cricket, did it 3 times, than Nabi said keep it till cricket and ICC media Manager had to intervene and cut the guy off respectfully.

Not sure if Indian or Pakistan. I thought he was Indian, but might be Pakistani.

Lol why did you assume he was an Indian journalist. These type of questions seem to be a speciality of Pakistani journalists as the thread indicates.:asif

A lot has changed in Afghanistan over the last few months, with the Taliban overthrowing the existing government in the country. The Taliban's arrival, in fact, was duly backed by the government in Pakistan. However, putting the political situation aside, as the Afghanistan team arrived in the T20 World Cup 2021, questions on the affairs back home aren't leaving them alone.

After Afghanistan suffered a defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the 24th match of the T20 World Cup 2021, Mohammad Nabi arrived at the press conference to address the media. While the Afghan skipper was hoping to have a chat with the journalists about the performance of his team and other cricketing matters, he was left bemused on being asked a 'political question'.

“Afghanistan have played very well and they have won two matches. Is there any kind of fear that when you return home, you will be questioned as the government and situation have changed?” the journalist asked.

“In this new era, Afghanistan share a healthy relation with Pakistan. Do you feel that the Afghan team will be strengthened because of this?” he further asked as a follow-up question.

Unhappy with the question, Nabi answered: “Can we talk about cricket leaving aside the situation? It would be better if we talk about cricket. We are here for the World Cup after taking proper preparations. You may ask any questions related to cricket.”

When the reporter said that he is asking a cricketing question itself, Nabi retorted saying it isn't a cricket-related question.

The reporter's query was shut down by the moderator and the press conference moved forward.

Nabi isn't the only one was encountered an awkward question in the press conference. Earlier in the tournament, India skipper Virat Kohli was asked by a journalist if benching Rohit Sharma in favour of Ishan Kishan could've been a plausible option for him. An utterly shocked Kohli told was left baffled by the 'controversy seeking question from the reporter.

In the media interaction, Nabi also urged Afghanistan fans to buy tickets in order to watch the national team's games at the T20 World Cup, amid chaos at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday. During the match, thousands of ticketless fans had thronged at the stadium to watch their team play and police had to be deployed to control the situation.

Questions Pakistani journalists could’ve asked Nabi:-

Q1. Why did you bowl Mujeeb’s 4 overs in the first 10 overs?

Q2. When Pakistan needed 24 from 12, were you thinking the game was in the bag for Afghanistan?

Q3. Did dew have an effect on the bowlers?

Q4. Was batting first the right decision?

Q5. Do you not back your batsmen to chase?

Q6. Mujeeb went off the field after his 4 overs, why?

Q7. Why does Rashid Khan not bat higher up the order?

Q8. Did you feel 150 was enough to defend?

What Pakistani journalists ask (paraphrasing) :-

Q1. How u feel bloody loser?

Q2. Will Taliban be angry?

Q3. Why you no fight Taliban?

Q4. Why crying always on anthem?

Q5. Tell us political situation in Afghanistan?

That’s the standards of Pakistani sports journalists.

When it’s so easy to become a PIA pilot, just imagine how easy it is to become a sports journalist in Pakistan.

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.000%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/ou0lrs" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Nabi seems like a really nice guy, answered it well. Was definitely a Pakistani asking the questions

The second set of questions made me chuckle.

Another fine example.

One of our journalist friends asked Mohammad Rizwan in an interview:

"Your pictures always have Pathan boys in them. I know you're not like that. Nobody in the Pakistan team is like that"

Rizwan was taken aback

Journalist then on Twitter apologizing and saying others have dirty minds.

Media needs to calm down

All the sports reporters and youtube analysts are having a ruthless go at the PCB, players and Babar e.t.c. Yes everyone is upset and feeling humiliated at losing to Australia at home but lets not blow things out of proportion either, Pakistan has been habitually losing series at home since 1995 even when we had legends in the team.

These sort of negative personal attacks are the major reason why the players are always playing for their spots in the team. Even the great Indian team that exists today has lost plenty of SENA tours and even lost to England at home in 2012 but their media and ex players are more level headed in comparison.

Defenders of the team also need to take a back seat. This kind of pathetic display of performance, at home, at our strengths of dead wickets, is unacceptable.

This We shouldnt get personal but some responsibility needs to be taken by the players and coaching staff for this debacle

Pakistan isnt a minnow team where these sort of pathetic performances at home should become the norm or acceptable

Better to play in Pakistan than in UAE (even if result is better in UAE).

Real home can't replace adopted home.

Absolutely. Don't forget, some random school kid in the crowd may get inspired and be the next big thing in the coming years.

Now posters would recognize the worth of UAE..

Not really....it's more to do with the poor pitches prepared purposely by PCB.

Pakistan did beat SA at home last year on good pitches.

And then the most important part is the poor performance of spinners....they wouldn't have have done anything in UAE too.

The media and ex-players were extremely critical of the Indian team after 2012, and everyone was calling for Dhoni to be removed from captaincy.

Losing at home is always shameful, I doubt anyone was spared when India lost at home in 2012

Just because we’ve been losing habitually as you put it doesn’t mean to say we should sit back, relax and accept it.

I’m happy if all the stakeholders are getting heat, hope they get more until their ears burn.

Maybe, just maybe then they will start implementing the changes that are long overdue.

The Pakistani media has its own agenda....they want to bring back their favs.

I see these pseudo-experts on YouTube having a go at Imran Khan and asking him to go back to departmental cricket....as if Pakistan used to be world-beaters during those days.

Yeah but would nullify the quicks of Aus, PCT has lost many series at home but have been way competitive in UAE..

Ramiz Raja takes a swipe at sports journalists

pakistani sports journalism is total tripe, they are all pushing agendas or players, no one at any level is willing to convey the views of the fans who have had enough of this rubbish.

Asked PCB about this.

"He was given questions in the last two press conferences. You must have seen how he spoke to Nauman and Abrar, and then we had to leave within five minutes so we were short on time"

The problem is that some of these guys are affiliated to channels who are media partners of PSL teams and for that reason they think they own Pakistan cricket and have a God-given right to do what they want and behave how they want.

If IPL hindered Indian cricket for a time PSL has improved and given foreign talent the exposure and nurturing that Pakistanis are not getting. It may well be the destroyer of Pakistani cricket.

Yes it was Jatt. He’s always sinking to new lows and seems to relish in the hatefulness. He clearly has an agenda against certain players, but somehow holds clout and is always hanging around.

He holds clout because he works for a big channel who happens to be the owner of the biggest franchise in the PSL.
