Hail to the King: How Virat Kohli became the best player in the world

“Satyagraha” is the Sanskrit word coined by Mahatma Gandhi to describe the passive resistance which he practiced to successfully overthrow British rule in India. It means “the vindication of truth not by the infliction of suffering on the opponent, but on one’s self.”

Many previous Indian cricket teams tended to play with undue deference to their opponents, as if in accord with the Gandhian principle. Sourav Ganguly was the first Indian captain to try to change that approach. It worked to a degree in India but usually hit a hurdle overseas.

Virat Kohli does not believe in passive resistance. He is a proponent of all-out aggression. His idea is to dominate the opposition.

Kohli is the most Australian non-Australian cricketer of all time. He embodies the new India. As the premier player and captain of the world’s pre-eminent cricket power, he feels an abiding responsibility to the wider game.

Former Indian opener Lalchand Rajput, who coached Kohli at the under-19 level, recognized very early that he had what it took to be a champion. Not everybody was convinced, however.

The doubters did not have the advantage that Rajput had of seeing the young man up close. This proximity gave him an insight into the passion, desire, and, more importantly, the self-belief Kohli held that he could be a great player.

Not that India hasn’t produced great batsmen in the past. Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid were veritable run machines and VVS Laxman was an artist of consummate skill. Sachin Tendulkar, especially the early iteration, was a genius. But none of them were in-your-face personalities like 'King' Kohli. MS Dhoni matched Swashbuckle with Kohli in the white-ball formats, but he could not consistently pull it off in Test cricket.

Kohli’s strength of mind was tested in December 2006 when his father Prem passed away during a Ranji Trophy game in Delhi. He was playing for Delhi against Karnataka, and it was expected that he would withdraw. Instead, he came out and scored 90 in a backs-to-the-wall effort to save Delhi from defeat.

Kohli strode out of youth cricket in 2008 as the successful India under-19 captain and heir apparent to the greats of the past.

The fear in some quarters was that he was more strut than substance and that his belligerent attitude would be a handicap.

He was rewarded with his first one-day international cap as a 20-year-old in August 2008, but his first Test cap did not eventuate until June 2011.

Kohli struggled with his early elevation. He got caught up in the bright lights and made some poor choices. Doubts intensified that his antics and lack of professionalism would undermine his ability.

His coach, Rajkumar Sharma, gave him a wake-up call. He had a good look at himself and decided that he didn’t want to waste his talent.

Virat reviewed his lifestyle and immediately changed his attitude, diet and the way he trained. No Indian cricketer has paid as much attention to detail and no aspect of preparation was left to chance.

He became the quintessential professional and a model of the modern Indian cricketer. Allied with his determination and aggression, he became the player that competitors feared most.

Kohli says that one of the best things that happened to him was meeting Anushka Sharma in 2013. He credits her with broadening his outlook.

From a cricketing point of view, the turning point for Virat was his disappointing tour of England in 2014. English conditions and bowlers – Anderson in particular – had made batting seem more difficult than solving Fermat’s last theorem.

On his return to India, Kohli turned to Rajput for help. They spent 14 days together, working on getting into better positions to deal with the best deliveries. Tendulkar also offered some cogent inputs on batting against top bowlers.

During one of these sessions, Rajput told Kohli that he could be a similar player to Viv Richards. Kohli wasn’t convinced. “No sir,” he said, “he is too great for me.” It is now looking like a prescient statement. Sir Vivian would be proud to have played some of the innings that Kohli has played in the intervening years.

The ensuing tour of Australia was a watershed in which he set his career on a solid footing and won over the demanding crowds. This country holds a special place in his heart because “respect has to be earned; it is not given easily.”

Steve Smith and Kane Williamson vie with Kohli for the mantle of the best batsman of their era. Smith holds a handy lead statistically, but it would be a brave pundit who would split them.

Kohli, though, is the most important one in the context of world cricket.

As captain of India, Kohli is tremendously influential. He is also under the most pressure. It cannot be underestimated how hard it must be to go out to bat with the hopes, aspirations and mood of a billion people, riding on your every performance.

As Kohli says, “If I focus on that, I can’t breathe. I must focus on what I can do.”

The fact that Kohli champions Test cricket is a huge plus for a format under pressure for time and space in a crowded schedule.

Test cricket has always been the pinnacle for him and it has driven him to be fitter and stronger to cope with its demands. It is why he drives his team in these areas because he wants India to be respected in the most demanding format.

If the captain of India is ambivalent towards Test cricket, some administrators would be happy for it to slide into ignominy, as they are seduced by the newer, shinier models.

An aspect of Test cricket that needs to be improved, he believes, is the preparation of more challenging wickets so as to increase the number of results.

Kohli has a broad perspective on the game. He is aware of his personal record, but that is not his focus. Winning games for India is way more important to him and he sees it as his prime objective.

On the broader front, he is aware of his status in the game and how he can impact others. His response to the Indian supporters who booed Steve Smith at The Oval during the 2019 World Cup was illuminating and heartening.

As Smith walked on to the field, the Indian supporters booed him for his part in the ball-tampering affair. Kohli immediately reacted by indicating to the crowd that they should instead be applauding Smith as a champion. He believed that Smith had paid for his mistake and he didn’t want his team to accrue an unfair advantage. It was a significant and admirable display of sportsmanship.

The brash youngster had morphed into a senior statesman.

As a batsman, Kohli is a ‘feel’ player. Heavy bats are not for him, he tells me. He relies on timing and precision more than muscle. His double-handed style is both powerful and freakish.

I am in awe of the way sub-continental batsmen generate power on slower wickets because of their two-handed style, similar to a hockey hit. Most Australian batsmen try to add power by the use of the bottom hand, but it is inefficient and, usually, ineffective on slow pitches.

Kohli has taken this to another level. His two-handed tennis-like slap down the ground to short balls is unique. It must be unnerving to bowlers to have balls that one would expect to go square of the wicket, come thundering back past them.

The best players don’t pay much attention to the coaching manual. They work off angles and length to score their runs. Kohli is no different. He is a genius at using the bowlers’ angles against them and shifts around the crease to change the angles regularly.

Kohli’s superpower is his imagination. He visualizes how he can make runs, no matter the conditions or the situation of the game, and he spends considerable time preparing to do so.

While entirely understandable, it is a shame for this contest that Kohli will go home for the birth of his first child after the Adelaide Test.

This series is a bout between heavyweights. Arguably, the best two teams in world cricket will battle it out at near full strength. India won last time on Australian soil, but the asterisk was that Smith and David Warner were absent.

Kohli is an intensely driven man. He will want his team to reiterate their supremacy, and I expect something exceptional from him before he goes.

As Gandhi stated, “Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Has Kohli won any title as a captain at any level? Can he win WTC Final?

Afaik he hasn’t won any title for India or RBC at senior level. Whether it’s WT20, WC. Asia Cup or IPL. Has he won any for Delhi as captain?

Don't think he ever captained Delhi.

Do ICC test mace count? He's won them 5 times running.

As Virat Kohli walked out for toss with New Zealand's Kane Williamson at The Ageas Bowl in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, he surpassed MS Dhoni's record of leading the Indian team in most Test matches. World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand is the 61st match for Kohli as India's captain in the longest format of the game, now a record. Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014 after captaining India in 60 matches. Kohli is also the longest-serving Test captain for any Asian country with Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga and Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq behind him as they captained their respective teams in 56 Test matches each.

South Africa's Graeme Smith is the longest-serving captain in the history of Test cricket as he captained Proteas in a record 109 matches. He is the only player to have played more than 100 Tests as captain and Australia's Allan Border is second with 93 Tests as captain.

Earlier, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first in the much-awaited World Test Championship (WTC) final against India on Saturday. Incessant rain saw the opening day's play being washed out.

During the toss, India skipper Virat Kohli said, "We would've probably bowled first as well. But runs on the board has been our strength. In a big final, runs on the board, however many, are an advantage. As you saw the makeup of our side, the balance is such that we prepare for any conditions.

"We've been performing really well in Test cricket. For us this is just a Test match we have to be professional in, have to follow our processes."

He's done well so far today but to justify the tag of being the greatest living batsman overall in the world he must hit a century.

Being the best comes with sky high expectations.

So restrained due to the conditions, context, and still out there despite many disruptions; VK is indeed a great. I just hope he corrects the ICC finals record in this match.

His form has been down for a while, people forgot how prolific he was two years ago. But he still needs to do more to be considered ATG. This WTC final is a good start towards that. If he can do well in upcoming England series then it'd seal his ATG status.

Virat Kohli begins his final chapter as the captain of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game on Sunday as the Men in Blue take on Pakistan in their opening contest at T20 World Cup 2021. While India's dominant run against Pakistan in World Cups isn't hidden from anyone in the international cricketing spectrum, Virat Kohli has also had an invincible run against the men from across the border in T20 World Cups.

Kohli might not have had the best of run with the bat over the last couple of years but he still remains one of the finest batters in world cricket. Having scored runs against virtually all opponents across the globe, Kohli gears up to face Team India's arch-nemesis Pakistan with absolute invincibility.

So far in his career, Kohli has come across Pakistan thrice when it comes to T20 World Cups. Interestingly, the 32-year-old has never been dismissed in an Indo-Pak cricketing contest in the shortest format in this specific tournament. Here's the list of instances:

India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2012: Unbeaten on 78 runs from 61 balls
India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2014: Unbeaten on 36 runs from 32 balls
India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2016: Unbeaten on 55 runs from 37 balls

Kohli is also the highest run-scorer against Pakistan in T20Is. Over the years, he has aggregated 264 runs in 6 innings at a stunning average of 84.66. He also has two fifties to his name in the contest both of which have come in the World Cups. His strike rate of 118.6, however, is something that the India skipper would look to improve on.

Star of the end of the journey for Kohli as T20I captain

Well before the start of the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli had announced his decision to step down as skipper from the format after the conclusion of the showpiece event. Having failed to guide the Indian team to a single ICC title as skipper, pressure has been mounting on Kohli to deliver on the biggest stages of all. While Kohli cited workload as the primary reason behind his decision to relinquish the responsibility, several other theories continue to be discussed among fans and experts.

The situation, however, has also seen many former cricketers urge Indian players to rally behind Kohli and give their all in order to ensure that he bows out as captain from the shortest format with the T20 World Cup trophy in his hand.

Held the innings together today.

Lesser batsmen would have crumbled under the pressure and the result would have been a team which was 100-120 all out.

Superb innings today:

Top knock. It is a batting wicket but he did well to weather the storm and took India to a decent position with that knock.

Pant also deserves credit as he changed the momentum with those two sixes.

Ind vs Pak: Virat Kohli surpasses Chris Gayle to achieve major milestone in T20 World Cup history

Virat Kohli broke Chris Gayle's record of most 50's in T20 World cup

Setting records is something Virat Kohli has made a habit of and he once again achieved that feat during India's opening clash of the 2021 T20 World Cup against Pakistan in Dubai. The Indian skipper scored a half-century and in the process, he broke Chris Gayle's record of scoring the most half-centuries in the history of the T20 World Cup.

This was Kohli's 10th half-century at the global T20 event and broke Gayle's record of 9 50+ scores at the event. While Gayle has scored nine 50s, Mahela Jayawardene has scored seven half-centuries in the tournament.

Most 50+ scores in T20 WC-
10 V Kohli
9 C Gayle
7 M Jayawardene

Kohli scored a vital knock of 58 after India lost their openers early to help them set a fighting total of 150 on the board. Rishabh Pant scored an important knock of 39 while Shaheen Afridi took three wickets.

Kohli had won the man of the tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions and finished as the top scorer in both events. He is yet to win the trophy having not been part of the 2007 Indian winning squad.

India are crippled with him as captain, I hope he continues to lead in Tests and ODIs as everyone is better off this way.

Couldn't pick a good XI if his life depended on it.

Even his record in ODIs (ICC events especially) is not great.

In Tests, yes, he is a legendary captain for India.

This is true. If India wants to win 2022 T20 WC and 2023 ODI WC - we need new captain

In Tests, he lost a WTC Final in 3.5 days and beat an understrength team.

The true success in Aus came when he left.

The fact that kohli has taken team to semis or finals most of times in last few years says there is no issue with his captaincy.
He rallies the team and commands lot of respect from team members.

His record of losing important tosses in knock-outs and support cast not turning up in the big game is main reason of not winning tournaments.
I remember dhoni was winning some important tosses and eventually led to lot of success.
Kohli is unlucky with tosses no doubt!

Ok, he may not have had the results to qualify as a legend. But to Indian cricket fans, he changed the approach of Indian test cricket. The never say die attitude that this Indian team has become known for (except the WTC Final, ofcourse) is credit to him.

He is perhaps not even tactically sound, but he has certainly cemented his legacy as the best Test captain for India. To many, he is a legend.

Born: November 5, 1988 (age 33 years), New Delhi, India

Happy Birthday Virat Kohli.

It's over two years since Virat Kohli scored his last international century. The Indian team's Test skipper has notched up 483 runs in 10 games this year including four half-centuries. But Kohli, currently third in the list of the all-time century-makers in international cricket after Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, is still waiting to score his 71st ton.

As the year draws to a close, it will be interesting to see whether the 33-year-old batter regains his magic touch after being relieved of captaincy in the limited-overs formats. Leaving Kohli's century drought out of the picture, India coach Rahul Dravid has said that the Test skipper has induced a culture of fitness within the Indian team. Dravid recalled Kohli's debut and also commented on his meteoric rise at the biggest stage.

The Kohli-led Indian contingent is all set to play South Africa in a three-match Test series, starting December 26 with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. "I was there when Virat Kohli made his debut, I was there when he played his first Test match and I batted with him in that particular game.

"It is actually phenomenal to see how he has grown as a cricketer in the last 10 years, just the kind of performances he has had for the team. The way he has led the team and it has been terrific. He has driven a culture of fitness and energy levels among the team. I am looking forward to work with him, he just keeps evolving and he keeps pushing himself," Dravid told bcci.tv.

Dravid also recalled playing in the Rainbow Nation and leading India to a famous Test win in 2006 at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. India had also reached the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa where they had suffered a 125-run defeat against the Aussies.

"It has been a great country to tour and a very challenging place to play cricket but also an exciting place to play the game. I have some fond memories associated with playing in South Africa, having won Test match here as a captain. Had some tough games here also, we reached the final of the 2003 World Cup, that was a really good memory. So it is a place that is very passionate about their cricket, games are well supported and well attended. Really looking forward to the series."

"There is an expectation to win now, everytime India travels abroad irrespective where it is and whatever format we are playing, the expectation is that we are good enough to win and compete. It is not easy, South Africa is one of the challenging conditions to play cricket in, they do play well at home so we need to be at our best to win here," he added.

Dravid started his coaching stint with the senior men's team on a positive note, registering a T20I series sweep against New Zealand at home and following it up with a 1-0 Test series victory against the same opposition. Dravid, who is geared up for his first overseas assignment with the Indian team, emphasized on the team's preparation and mental aspect as well.

"We have had some good practice sessions, I have been happy with the intensity guys have put in. The mental mindsight I can see among the players has been really good. We are preparing well and yeah we will take it from there," said Dravid.

Virat Kohli is on the cusp of major career milestone.

With an aim to register their first-ever Test series win in South Africa, Virat Kohli & Co. will be facing Deal Elgar-led side in a three-match Test series starting today (December 26). India have won Test matches in SA before but a series win continues to elude them.

With a packed batting line-up and a superlative bowling attack, India probably have their best chance to conquer SA at their home this time. The members of the visiting team landed in SA a couple of weeks back and have prepared well for the series.

As India aim for their maiden Test series win in SA, skipper Kohli also has his eyes set on a major milestone. With 7801 runs, Kohli is presently at the 32nd spot on the list of most run-scorers in Test cricket.

He is just 199 runs short of breaching the 8000-run mark and has 6 innings in SA to achieve the milestone. The Indian skipper can also very well go past Gary Sobers on the list of most run-getters. The West Indies' legend piled up 8032 runs in 93 Test matches. Should Kohli score more than 231 runs in the series, he will go past the former WI captain on the list.

Kohli has 7801 runs in 97 Tests and averages 50.65 for his tally. Apart from climbing the most run-getters list, Kohli will also become the 12th Indian to don 100 Test caps if he plays all matches. Ishant Sharma, who is part of the much-awaited series, was the previous Indian player to play more than 100 Tests. He achieved the milestone against England earlier this year.

The three-match India-South Africa series will be played from December 26 to January 15. Centurion, Johannesburg and Cape Town will host three Test matches, respectively. Following the red-ball matches, the two teams will square off in three ODIs.

He is having serious dip in his career with bat. Average on verge of getting below 50.

India vs South Africa, 3rd Test: Virat Kohli eclipses Rahul Dravid in exclusive list with 2nd slowest half-century

Frustrating the South African bowlers on the opening day of the 3rd Test match against the Dean Elgar-led side at Cape Town's Newlands Stadium, Indian skipper Virat Kohli played a patient knock to lead the charge of the visitors. Making a sensational return in the third and final Test match of the three-game series, batting icon Kohli played a patient knock to surpass legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid in an elite list on Tuesday.

Returning back to scoring ways for Team India in the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship, Kohli eclipsed Dravid to become the second-highest run-getter for the Asian giants on South African soil. Former Indian skipper Dravid, who is celebrating his birthday today, had amassed 624 runs for India in South Africa.

Indian Test skipper Kohli is only behind Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar in the list of Indian batters with the most number of runs on South African soil. Legendary batter Tendulkar had scored 1161 runs for India against South Africa in the longest format from 1992 to 2011. Talking more about the match, skipper Kohli also reached a gritty half-century to lead the fightback of the visitors on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test match.

Interestingly, Kohli completed his half-century in 159 balls which is also his second-slowest half-century in the longest format of the game. Kohli's slowest half-century (171 balls) had arrived against England at Nagpur in 2012. Playing an unbeaten knock for the Dravid-coached side on the opening day, the Indian skipper has managed to register his 99th fifty-plus score across all formats as the captain of the Asian giants.

India vs West Indies: Virat Kohli 6 Runs Away From Achieving Huge ODI Milestone In India

Virat Kohli will eye yet another personal milestone in the One-Day International series against the West Indies.

Following the aftermath of his captaincy saga, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli the batter as India host the West Indies for three ODIs, followed by three T20Is, starting Sunday. Kohli stepped down as India's T20I and Test captain, while he was replaced by Rohit Sharma as ODI skipper ahead of the recently-concluded tour of South Africa. During the three-match ODI series against the Windies, Kohli will aim to end his international century drought, having failed to reach triple figures in over two years in any format. The 33-year-old will also be eyeing another personal milestone in the ODI series against the Windies.

Kohli is just 6 runs away from becoming only the second Indian batter to reach the milestone of 5,000 ODI runs on home soil.

Sachin Tendulkar is the only other batter who has scored 5,000 or more ODI runs in India.

Interestingly, Sachin had reached the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs in India against West Indies on his 121st innings.

Kohli, on other hand, could achieve the feat in his 96th ODI innings in India, if he manages to score 6 runs in the first ODI on Sunday.

Earlier this week, Mayank Agarwal was added to India's ODI squad after seven members in the Indian camp, including four players --Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Navdeep Saini -- tested positive for COVID-19.

All the three ODIs will be played without spectators in Ahmedabad, with the first ODI scheduled to be held on February 6.

The first ODI on Sunday will be India's 1000th match in the 50-over format, which is the most by any team.

Virat Kohli didn't have a great outing with the bat in the opening ODI of the three-match series against West Indies and was dismissed for a 4-ball 8. The former skipper hit Alzarri Joseph for two back-to-back boundaries before being dismissed by the pacer.

Even though Kohli only had a one-over stay in the middle, he achieved a huge milestone. During his knock of 8, Kohli became the quickest batsman to score over 5000 runs at home. The right-handed batsman leapfrogged Sachin Tendulkar on the elite list.

Kohli, who played his 249th innings in ODIs, crossed the 5000-run mark in his 96th innings at home. Tendulkar had breached that mark in 121 innings while Jacques Kallis batted 130 times for his 5000 runs. Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting took 138 innings to reach the milestone. Kohli is so far the only batsman to achieve this milestone in less than 100 innings.

He sits at the 4th spot on the list of batsmen with the most runs in a country. Tendulkar scored 6976 runs at his home soil whereas Ponting hit 5521 runs in Australia. Kallis piled up 5186 runs in the rainbow nation. Kohli has so far scored 5002 runs in India.

Kohli still has a long career ahead of him and is likely to achieve many more records in the years to come.

100% Kohli is the GOAT 🐐 of cricket. He has cemented his legacy and surpassed tendulkar and every other great with his brilliance over the past decade. His numbers speaks for itself and he has played many memorable innings one comes to mind is his 183 against Pakistan in Asia cup… he’s best of all time and I’m sure majority will agree with me… he’s bound to decline now as he’s in mid 30s but he’s still the GOAT period

Virat Kohli achieves another feat, becomes 5th Indian player to don 100 ODI caps at home

Virat Kohli achieved another milestone in his career and became the 5th Indian player to don 100 ODI caps at home. The former India skipper only managed 18 off 30 in the 2nd ODI against West Indies.

Virat Kohli achieved yet another feat in his illustrious career during the 2nd ODI of the ongoing three-match series against the West Indies. Kohli, who made his ODI debut in 2008, has become the 5th Indian batsman to don 100 ODI caps at home. The former Indian skipper was 2 caps short of the tally before the start of the ongoing ODI series.

He donned his 99th ODI cap in the opening ODI and on Wednesday (February 9), Kohli achieved the milestone. The list of Indian batsmen with the most ODIs at home is topped by Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster played 164 ODIs at home.

He is followed by MS Dhoni, who played 127 ODIs on the Indian soil. He played his final home ODI at Ranchi, against Australia, in 2019. Mohammad Azharuddin played 113 ODIs in India. He is followed by Yuvraj Singh, who played 108 ODIs at home.

Kohli, who is playing his 259th ODI*, has 12311 runs in his 50-over career. The tally includes 43 tons and 64 half-centuries. Kohli also captained India to 65 wins in 95 matches.

Kohli out for 18

Meanwhile, the former skipper struggled in the 2nd ODI and only managed 18 off 30 before being dismissed by Odean Smith. The right-handed batsman looked in touch and hit 3 boundaries. But he ended up giving a catch to wicketkeeper Shai Hope in the 12th over.

Suryakumar Yadav shone with the bat and scored 64 off 83 to rescue the team. He was well-supported by KL Rahul, who was run-out for 49. The duo added 91 runs for the 4h wicket.

Courtesy of Washington Sundar's 24 and Deepak Hooda's 29, India finished at 237/9 in 50 overs. A win here will seal the series for India while a defeat will bring West Indies back into the series. The 3rd ODI will also be played in Ahmedabad on Friday (February 11).

The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka starting on Friday at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium (PCA) in Mohali will be an iconic moment in Indian cricket as Virat Kohli completes 100 Test matches. The ex-Indian skipper who made his debut in 2011 will become the 12 Indian player to achieve the milestone and will join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ishant Sharma and in the elite list.

Ahead of the the historic occasion, Kohli has opened up on the feeling of playing 100 Test matches and called it a special moment in his life. “I honestly never thought I would play 100 Test matches. It has been a long journey. We played a lot of cricket over the course of playing those 100 Test matches. A lot of international cricket. I am just grateful that I’ve been able to make it to 100. God has been kind.
"I have worked really hard for my fitness. It’s special moment for me, for my family, for my coach, who is also very happy and very proud of this Test match as long as I am concerned,” said Kohli to BCCI.tv

Kohli also described his love for the longest format of the game and called it real cricket. He recalled his days of scoring double hundreds in junior cricket. “I never grew up thinking that I have to score small runs, the idea was to score big runs. I scored a lot of double hundreds in junior cricket. My idea was to bat long and I enjoyed doing that. These things took a lot out of you and it revealed your true character. Test cricket needed to stay alive, for me, this is real cricket,”said the former Indian captain.

Kohli is India's most successful captain in red-ball cricket with 40 wins in 68 matches. He has 7962 runs to his name in 99 matches with 27 centuries.

India batter Virat Kohli on Friday achieved yet another milestone after he walked out to bat on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Playing in his 100th Test, Virat also completed 8,000 runs in the longest format of the game. He is only the sixth India batter to have scored 8,000 or more runs in Test cricket, joining an elite list comprising greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman.

Kohli in his 169th innings, is also the fifth-fastest from the country to reach the landmark behind Sachin Tendulkar (154 innings), Rahul Dravid (158 innings) Virender Sehwag (160 innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (166 innings).

The 33-year-old, however, is going through a rough patch in Test cricket. In the ongoing first Test, he was castled on 45 by Lasith Embuldeniya.

For the record, Kohli has not scored a century in more than two years. He last scored an international ton back in November 2019 against Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, India are currently four wickets down against Sri Lanka.

After electing to bat first, India got off to a solid start with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal. The pair added 52 runs for the first wicket before the India skipper was dismissed on 29.

Agarwal then put on short partnership with Hanuma Vihari, before also losing his wicket to Embuldeniya.

Vihari hit an unbeaten half-century as he and Kohli added 90 runs for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed in the 44th over.

Vihari followed soon after as he got an inside edge back onto his stumps off Vishwa Fernando when he was batting on 58.

So, there’s a tweet gone viral after someone predicted that Kohli would get bowled by Embuldeniya on 45.

Predicted around 10 hours before the game.👀

I feel like his career is coming to an end, He could clearly carry on like Tendulkar but I guess after the next 50 over WC he will call it a day.

I think we will continue to see him in IPL colours for a very long time though.

He desperately needs a couple of years in Test Cricket where he could just turn things again.

One would think that with his captaincy period having come to an end that there might not be long left in his top level career.

He has achieved a huge amount. If he retires from internationals in the next year or two then this would be entirely understandable.

Yes he will be playing IPL til he is in his 50s most likely. Lol

I have noticed a lot of lbws and bowleds of straight deliveries. That is a sign of declining reflexes

No matter what anyone says, at this stage of a players career their statistics and legacy will be playing on their minds.

Unlike players like Tendulkar and Ponting who statistically could afford a significant drop in output towards the tail end of their career, Kohli starting to get scarily close to dropping below the magical 50 average.

Kohli is a cricket nerd, he will know that to be considered amongst the GOATS you MUST have a test match average over 50. The LOI stuff is merely used as an additional filter. The test average is the main thing.

An average below 50 will start to exclude him from the conversation. The only other player that I personally would put amongst the modern greats is Graeme Smith who despite averaging less than 50 gets a few additional percentage points for his longevity and legacy as a captain.

In my eyes Kohli's LOI exploits keep him in the category of the greats but a test average of under 50 will be a massive blemish.

I think he will retire soon.

Kohli's stock has declined considerably since 2020 , he seems to getting some runs this year , still he is struggling as one can see from his declining StrikeRate.

There have been great players to average below 50 like KP and Inzi (if you don’t round up), but it is certainly a talking point. He doesn’t look to turn things around but is 2k away from the big 10k landmark to which is also important for ATG’s, he could get there but not sure if he’d average 50+ in doing so, he cuts a sad isolated figure now without the leadership to. Retirement would be a good way to maintain the averages

Virat now moved upto 5th position in Test Batters ranking

I wonder why Virat is not producing the same amount of runs as he has done in the past across formats? When he was scoring bucket loads of runs people foolishly assumed it was due to his improved fitness standards which actually contributes a negligible amount to scoring runs or batting. Infact in the past there has been quit a few examples where batsmen have scored big runs while injured / cramping.

Mental fatigue, form, confidence, etc are much bigger factors once you have the talent to maximize output. He is not quit been in the same place mentally as he was in the earlier part of his career and that has reflected in reduced runs output.

All this being said he still remains a great player fully deserving of his place in the team as the best Indian batter. Talent remains for now.

Virat Kohli in Powerplay this IPL (2022)

I think 2022 might be Kohli's last year in at least couple of formats unless he has a dramatic turnaround. Sad but true, Tests probably might be the first format he gets dropped from. There is no justification to continue playing him unless he starts scoring runs again in the upcoming series. It is unfair on players who are vying for spots in the lineup. He is averaging 28 in 30 Test innings since December 2019 (His last Test hundred was in Nov 2019). Pujara was dropped for similar record from the Test side.

If he has a couple of years of peak left in him, he will get to 10k test runs and that would be enough to call him an ATG. I think he will probably end in that average of 47-48( KP, Cook average range) but honestly that average with 11k runs and the same average with 8.5k runs at retirement is not same.

You can't be better than KP with the same average because he trumps about everyone in numbers of great innings played.

100%. Kp is well above virat. Kp is one of the best ever. He has many clutch performances.

I will pick ABDV over KP. Goes well with his teammates unlike KP. Quality wise more or less same and more consistent too.

Virat Kohli equalled Rohit Sharma's tally of scores of fifty or more in T20Is with his fine half-century against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup on Wednesday.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 59 off 44 balls as India put on 192/2 batting first against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup game in Dubai.

The half-century, his second in the format in 2022, helped Kohli go level with Rohit Sharma for most scores of fifty or more in T20Is. This was Kohli's 31st fifty-plus score in the format. Rohit has 27 half-centuries and four hundreds in T20Is.

No other batter has more than 30 such scores in T20Is with Babar Azam, David Warner, Martin Guptill and Paul Stirling the others with more than 20 scores of fifty or more.

While Kohli has 31 such scores, he is yet to make a hundred in T20Is. All of the other batters with 15 or more fifty-plus scores in men's T20Is have at least one hundred.

Kohli wasn't the only Indian player to notch up a milestone. Skipper Rohit Sharma crossed 3,500 runs in the format, becoming the first men's player, and second after Suzie Bates to get to the milestone in T20Is.

Kohli's half-century laid the platform for India against Hong Kong on Wednesday, but it was a stunning 26-ball 68* from Suryakumar that helped India make 122 runs in the last 10 overs and set Hong Kong a formidable total.

In the latest ICC Review, Australia legend Ricky Ponting assessed Virat Kohli’s comeback against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 and his battles with form and mental health, and the axing of Rishabh Pant from the India XI.

After a month-long break from cricket Kohli returned to the field with some semblance of form, scoring an important 35 against India’s arch-rivals Pakistan.

It proved to be an important knock as India beat Pakistan by five wickets in a thriller.

Kohli’s comeback

Kohli was far from his devastating best, but the 34-year-old showed glimpses of finding his touch with the bat during his knock in India's chase against Pakistan.

Ponting, who has been a vocal supporter of the former India captain in previous editions of The ICC Review, was pleased to see Kohli back among the runs during the high-stakes encounter.

"First and foremost, great to see him back in the runs," Ponting said. “No surprise that he did it in a run chase. We’ve always known that about him. His record suggests he is better when his team is chasing runs.

Kohli leads from the front on the big occasion

"When I saw his runs and then I've read on social media over the last few days, it sounded like he found himself in quite a dark place. Like a lot of us men, he wasn’t willing to talk about it and share it.

“It sounds like when he has started to share, started to talk, it might have just freed him up a bit and he started to feel better about himself again.

"I just hope that we see him back at his best and in the World Cup. I’d rather see Virat come out here (in Australia) and be one of the leading players in the tournament, but just make sure he doesn’t score many runs against Australia when they play!"

Mental health battle

The comments Ponting was alluding to related to a candid chat Kohli had with Star Sports in the lead-up to the India-Pakistan clash, when he opened up about his mental health battle and how he was “faking intensity” in his struggles to cope with it.

Ponting, when asked if he had faced anything similar, said there were parallels with his own struggles for form during the latter years of his career.

"I don’t think I can quite relate to the ‘intensity’ (comment)," said Ponting. "When things aren’t well and you’re not scoring the runs you used to scoring, the game all of a sudden seems to be too hard.

During the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2016, Mohali was host to a Virat Kohli masterclass.

"I sort of faced it in the last couple of years of my career where my career tapered off quite quickly … It was almost, the harder I work, the worse I got.

“I was so focused and conscious on being perfect and doing things exactly right, thinking I had to do that to get the best out of myself, but all I was doing was putting pressure on myself and not letting myself play the game the way I always played it. I reckon it might be a bit of that creeping in with Virat as well.

"It’s just human nature when things aren’t going the way you want, you push harder, you try harder, and the harder you try the harder it gets.”

Ponting believes it was important Kohli took an extended break to reset himself.

"One thing I’ll say about, as international cricketers, and probably more so with the modern Indian players, the amount of cricket they’re actually playing internationally and the IPL, you can quite often bluff yourself that you’re feeling good and that you are fresh, that you have got plenty of energy.

“Because when you’re tired, you have to tell yourself that, because you’ve got to get up and play again the next day. It’s not until you have stopped and just have a few days off, or you have a week away, that you realise how tired physically and mentally you are.

"For someone like Virat, it was no good having a week off. The fact that he has taken that month off to get away, to sort of regather his thoughts, get himself back where we think he is in the right space mentally … there’s lots of good signs there."

The Pant shock

Against Pakistan, the Indian management opted for the veteran Dinesh Karthik in the XI over Rishabh Pant, a decision that shocked some.

Ponting, who has coached the Pant-led Delhi Capitals in the IPL, counted himself among those in the ‘surprised’ corner.

"I was really surprised. To be honest, there was some talk about it, once again on social media channels going into the game, which way would they go because I think they needed the sixth bowling option," said Ponting.

"He (Pant) is honestly one of my favourites having worked with him for a long time now at the Delhi Capitals, and obviously being a franchise captain. I have a bit more of a soft spot for him than most, but for all the right reasons as well because I know his character.

“I know his skillset, I know how much he wants to do well and how much he wants to win games - whether it's for Delhi Capitals or for India.”

Despite the setback, Ponting believes it’s a matter of time before Pant fights his way back into the India XI.

“I don't think it'll be too long before we see him back into that team,” he said.

“But once again, when you look at the balance that India had though in that side, you know it's hard to leave Karthik out because Dinesh is in career-best form, and by a long way.

“This is where I'll come back again, the Indian selectors have got some big decision to make, tough decisions to make. When you're leaving someone out of the star quality of Rishabh Pant, you know that you have got a good side."

You can be.
KP is an all time great test batsman without a shadow of doubt.

I will pick ABDV over KP. Goes well with his teammates unlike KP. Quality wise more or less same and more consistent too.

KP is well above ABDV as a test batsman and ABDV is well above KP as a ODI batsman.

Kohli reached ATG status many years ago.

In LOIs, it is not even up for debate. His numbers and peak are unmatched.

In Tests, his record as captain, alongside an excellent batting record pretty much seals the deal as well.

With India set to play arch-rivals Pakistan in a high-profile game to begin their campaign in the Super 4 stage of the 2022 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (September 4), Indian batting talisman Virat Kohli was seen training in an unique and unprecedented manner on Friday in the build-up to the game.

93969497.jpg

At India's training activity at the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai, Kohli was seen wearing a 'high altitude mask' while doing running drills. The ex-Indian captain took multiple sprints of the ground while having the special mask on. Kohli was seen completing one sprint, taking a 30-second break, and then going on another sprint which is a trademark cardio activity aimed at improving stamina and fitness.

This led to many questioning his place in the T20 World Cup squad but Kohli has shown signs of regaining his touch in the continental showpiece event. In the tournament opener against Pakistan, the 33-year-old played a solid knock of 35 in 34 balls in a tense run chase. Later, he scored his first international half-century since February with an unbeaten innings of 59 in 44 balls against Hong Kong.
