Ever since Afghanistan decided to move on from the unfit Mohammad Shahzad, they have struggled to find a good wicket keeper. Often they would find a keeper but he would not be able to bat.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was a find from there u19 system. He is known for his strokes, he loves playing for the boundaries and also knows how to rotate the strike. He has been the best opener for Afghanistan since Noor Ali Zadran. He is also Islamabad United's main opener but does not keep the wicket due to Azam Khan getting preferable treatement.

Today he made a brilliant 151 against a very good bowling attack.

*** This thread is for Gurbaz only ***

No need to discuss other batters unless you are comparing his skills.

For Rizwan/Gurbaz type stuff, there is a different thread

With his 150 against Pakistan in the 2nd ODI, Gurbaz entered the record books for a series of feats for an Afghanistan player in the ODI format. Firstly, this was the first time when a batter from the country breached triple figures against Pakistan in the format; the previous highest individual score was an unbeaten 97 from Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Gurbaz also surpassed Babar Azam to become the third-fastest to reach five ODI centuries; while the Pakistan captain achieved this milestone in 25 innings, Gurbaz accomplished the same in just 23. Babar's fellow countryman Imam-ul-Haq and South Africa's Quinton de Kock hold the joint-record for fastest to five ODI tons, both achieving the mark in 19 innings.

No other wicketkeeper-batter had been successful in breaching the 150-run mark against Pakistan. The closest was Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had scored 148 against the side during a bilateral match in Visakhapatnam in 2005.

In fact, Gurbaz became the only sixth batter in the history of the game to breach the 150-run mark against Pakistan. While Virat Kohli (183) holds the record for the highest score against the side, Australia's David Warner (179) and Aaron Finch (153), Alex Hales (171) of England, and West Indies' former skipper Brian Lara (156) are the only ones to achieve the milestone.

i was more impressed with his fitness .He was quite outstanding in running between the wicket that too till 40 overs .

Gurbaz stands as the lone contemporary batsman within Afghanistan's lineup.

He should be played as a pure batsman , Afghanistan need to bring another WK in the side.

Gurbaz has a very promising future. Currently he is the standout player for the Afghanistan team and is consistently delivering impressive performances.

Gurbaz was batting well against Bangladesh but fell short of 3 runs to score his maiden 50 in the ICC World Cup. He scored 47 runs off 62 balls.

Gurbaz is their Jos Buttler. Fearless cricketer. Saw him a bit in the IPL and in the recent matches in one dayers. Very clean hitting.

Id take Gurbaz in our team in a heartbeat. Surely we can do something about Passports

he was the game changer here - took England by surprise. Shame he didn’t get MoM - thoroughly deserved it

His knock today was outstanding. Bullied the English bowlers, now England what it feels like.

He really impressed everybody with his blistering knock yesterday against England. Sets the tempo for a big upset.

The way he executes pull shots would make one thing he is from Tasmania. With limited exposure against top bowling he is able to handle good pacers effortlessly. Watch out other teams. On his day he can obliterate you.

Afghanistan's famous upset victory over England at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup has been soured with news that opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the match.

Gurbaz was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.

The incident occurred during the 19th over of Afghanistan's innings, when Gurbaz slammed his bat on the boundary rope and chair when leaving the field after being run out for 80.

Gurbaz admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, with one demerit point added to the opener's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The victory over England was Afghanistan’s first at the World Cup, with their next match coming against unbeaten New Zealand in Chennai on Wednesday.

He is a class-act and can change any game of cricket but he didn't look at his best against New Zealand today.

Gurbaz's impressive sixth T20I fifty catapults Afghanistan to a swift start in their pursuit of the challenging target of 212/4 against india in 3rd T20I. He scored 50 (32).

Doing well in ILT20

Gurbraz cracked an aggressive 81 runs off 39 balls with eight boundaries and four sixes

ODI century number six for Rahmanullah Gurbaz. He scored 121(117) against Ireland in the 1st ODI.

Only Tendulkar, Kohli, and de Kock have scored more men's ODI hundreds before turning 23 than Gurbaz.

Looking forward to him scoring a century against India and Australia too.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz departs against Ireland after his 51(53) in the 3rd ODI 2024 between the two sides.

IPL 2024: Gurbaz leaves ailing mother's bedside in Afghanistan to help power 'family' Kolkata into final

Rahmanullah Gurbaz left his hospitalised mother's bedside in Afghanistan to play a pivotal role in propelling Kolkata Knight Riders into the final on his first IPL appearance this season.

The wicketkeeper-batsman hit a quickfire 23 to set up Kolkata's chase of 160 as they hammered Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets on Tuesday in Ahmedabad.

It was the 22-year-old's first outing in this edition of the world's richest cricket competition, having made the heart-wrenching decision to leave his ailing mother.

He answered the SOS call from his team after Phil Salt left to prepare for England's T20 World Cup campaign.

"My mum is still sick. I went there (back to Afghanistan)," Gurbaz told reporters. "I got a call from KKR once Phil Salt was leaving. They called me and messaged me saying, 'Gurbaz, we need you. What is your situation?'

"I said I'll come."

Gurbaz joined two-time champions Kolkata ahead of last season but has been a bit-part player.

He flew home to be with his mother, but returned when his team needed him most.

"My mother is still recovering in the hospital, I speak to her every day," he said. "But I knew my KKR is also my family. They needed me here, so I came back from Afghanistan.

"It's hard, it's tough, but I have to manage."

The glovesman took two catches as Hyderabad were bowled out for 159 with pace ace Mitchell Starc returning figures of 3-34.

He then hit a 14-ball knock laced with two fours and two sixes to set the pace for Kolkata's chase in 13.4 overs and their entry into their fourth IPL final.

"As a cricketer you know what to do," he said.

"If you do not have an opportunity, you should prepare well and be ready. Whenever you get a chance, you have to be ready."

Despite limited playing time in the IPL, Gurbaz has played 55 times for Afghanistan in T20s and is set to be a key member at the World Cup next month.

Most of the Afghan players are already in the West Indies for the tournament but Gurbaz said his focus is on the IPL final and his "first priority is KKR".

The final is on Sunday in Chennai.

Hyderabad will have another shot on Friday at making the decider when they clash with the winner of Wednesday's game between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Gurbaz always seem to play these one off brilliant innings. For the most part, I feel he struggles to up the scoring rate and loses his wicket in the process. He is only 22 and can always improve. A very good keeper too.

What an inning played by gurbaz on the tough wicket, he is smashing sixes and he is batting on a wicket made of glass..

Got a Man of the Match award today for his superb knock of 80 off 56 balls against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup encounter. Eventually helping his team to a good total and proved to be a match-winning knock.

It's not made of glass. 145 was par on this track, but Gurbaz helped afg go 15 runs over par.

As for NZ, it was mostly because they haven't played for so long. These boys didn't know how to field or bat.

Fun Fact:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz becomes the first batter to outscore the opposition in a men's T20 World Cup game, twice.

First, he outscored Uganda with 76-58 runs and today against New Zealand 80-75 runs.

He is a class player and it has been obvious from day one. He is entering his prime years now and should go down as Afghanistan’s finest batsman to date.

He is basically their batting version of Rashid Khan.

Pakistani fans should not be ashamed of admitting that he is far better than Rizwan.

Just him?

If Afghanistan’s second keeper (the left hander) plays and bats in the middle, he is better than Rizwan too.

Not just Rizwan, he’s a better player than Babar too in LOI.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz told ICC in a video:

"Honestly, my target is not just Bumrah. I will look to target all the bowlers, not only Bumrah, because there are 5 bowlers bowling. I have to face them all, not just Bumrah and maybe another bowler could get me out, but yes, if I get a chance to hit him, let's go for it. Could be Bumrah, Arshdeep or Siraj. Anyone, if they bowl in my area, I will hit. I will either get out or I will hit them."

"We have played World Cups before, and we are here again now. But there is a huge difference and the difference is that our mindset was to just participate in the World Cup, but this time it is let's go, and we should be champions at the World Cup. There is no pressure on us to be champions. We don't have those expectations, but we are taking it just one game at a time. That is our focus and I hope we achieve our goals, and we qualify to the semi-final first and then to the final."

All eyes are now on Gurbaz

Virat Kohli has not yet delivered a significant performance as an opener in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 so far. Afghanistan's wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the other hand is nearing the milestone of surpassing Kohli's record in this major tournament. Gurbaz requires 39 more runs in Afghanistan's T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal match against South Africa on June 26 at Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad.

Gurbaz is currently the top run-scorer in this edition of the tournament, having accumulated 281 runs from seven innings with an average of 40.14, including three fifties. Kohli, on the other hand, holds the record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition. In 2014, on Sri Lankan soil, he amassed 319 runs from six innings at an astounding average of 106.33, featuring four half-centuries.

50 for Gurbaz - his 6th in ODIs! Afghanistan are off to a terrific start in 2nd ODI against South Africa

Gurbaz is consistently performing flawlessly against top sides

He is out after converting it into his 7th ODI century. Gone after making a well deserved 105(110)

Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored his seventh ODI century in the second match of the series between Afghanistan and South Africa, equalling Virat Kohli with the second-most hundreds in the format before turning 23.

Gurbaz reached the milestone off the 106th ball of his innings, making it his third-fastest century in the format behind both his hundreds against Bangladesh. His innings put Afghanistan well on top in the match after electing to bat first, as they reached 218-3 in the 40th over.

Before turning 23 haha

But Rizwan is a better all format batter who gets into the Australian white ball sides….
That’s correct.

Rizwan walks into the Australian team and Gurbaz runs into it.

Gurbaz > Rizwan > all Australian WKs

Australia, post Gilchrist, is the least talented cricket nation when it comes to WK batsmen and by some distance.

Rizwan would not even find a place in a Shield side after his antics.

Wont get into their t20 team at all (Jos Inglis) but will definitely make it into TEST team, Carey is hardly a great keeper bat, Rizwan beats him in both batting and keeping.

I think Carey sets the right tone with his professional and switched on attitude.

Intense, competitive cricketers, especially bowlers need a keeper who is as intense as them. Rizwan is a good keeper but his attitude is not the type that sets the tone for elite bowlers to operate

Yaar ab kuch bhi bol rahe ho, :apology

You discover new things to bring down Rizwan.

Gurbaz is certainly making waves in world cricket. Many might not like his aggressive attitude but that is what makes him the player he is today. Great inning, a Match-winning one.

Even Pant does that, Bumrah is okay with it.
There is a big difference in the way Bumrah conducts himself and how the Australian bowlers in general are. Cummins is probably the only nice Australian bowler I have seen in recent years. They don’t appreciate their fielders or keeper letting down the intensity levels

Rizwan walks
Gurbaz runs

Liton flies into the Australian team?
Liton also gives tough competition to any Australian WK of the last 15-16 years. That’s how mediocre they have been.

Every Test nation has produced a superior WK batsman in this period. Some of them like England and NZ have produced multiple.

Australia is a joke when it comes to WK batsmen which is ironic because it is the same system that produced Gilchrist.

As long as inglis is around at no 7 and players like short, Fraser are up and coming and established batters like head, smith, Labu, Maxwell and various others are occupying no 1 to no 6, Rizwan with his 11 avg at no 7 would never make it in.

He is everything Australian's despise in terms of their approach. Gurbaz would make it in as opener as long as Jake fraser is developing, if Jake develops, Gurbaz would get the boot. Aussie's are in no mood to make an opener bat at no 7 like pakistan attempts to do with their antics

Rahmanullah Gurbaz shines with 89 off 94 against South Africa in the 3rd ODI! He's a wonderful batter, consistently displaying selfless cricket, prioritizing team success over personal milestones. Most impressively his selection is purely based on merit.

Gurbaz taking the game away from Bangladesh in the ODI series decider. Currently at 72*(75), brilliant batting from Afghanistan opener.

Clutch player for Afghanistan. Scores run in ODIs at an okayish strike rate (88).

8 hundreds in 46 ODIs is no joke.
