[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Ravichandran Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket [Update@ Post# 1376]

Ashwin played just over half the series Murali played and is just 2 behind his WR tally.

Fantastic!

Pretty sure some English player will smash this record in the future. They give MoS to both home team and visiting team, 2 instead of standard 1 (in ROTW), and so many series, so much that they organize outside the WTC cycle. Like the series against NZ this year, just before the WTC final.

BG series 2020-21 was a miss. Ashwin was the frontrunner to win MoS after the SCG rearguard but unfortunately missed the Gabba test because of back injury.

It would have been a crowning moment for his career had he won the award there. Imagine a visiting offie in a position to win MoS in Australia, the graveyard for finger spinners. Anyway he was in that position after 3 tests (only Ind and Eng play >3 tests in Aus), that was amazing really after all the criticism directed towards him for his SENA record.

Most Tests wickets in India:
350 Anil Kumble
300 Ravi Ashwin*
265 Harbhajan Singh
219 Kapil Dev

Fastest to 300 Test wickets at home (tests):
48 M Muralitharan
49 Ravi Ashwin*
52 Anil Kumble
65 Shane Warne
71 Jimmy Anderson
76 Stuart Broad

The Man of the Series record is pretty awesome.

One of the ATGs of this era.

9 man of the series award but zero 5-fer in SENA. That is a major blip from what has been a truly extraordinary career till now.

Unless you play Ashwin in every single test and he fails you cannot hold him for this shortcoming. He missed 4 tests. He was never treated like how Australia treated Warne or SL treated Murali or even our own Indian side treated Kumble.I can tell how many matches Kumble was toothless. But he was always our no.1 choice home or away. Ashwin never had that kind of run. They used him as an utility bowler rather than an ace spinner.

The best thing about him is he always wants to be better, also he doesn’t back down which I used to find it annoying among Tamizh cricketers before, hoping Washi does well too.

The only difference is that India didnt had a good bowling attached overseas in those days. They have a very good attack now where they can choose not to play Ashwin particularly when in the form of Jadega they have an all rounder who bowls spin. Secondly Kumble, Warne and Murli were a class apart and notch above Ashwin IMHO

Team India newly appointed ODI captain Rohit Sharma believes that veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is going to be a crucial part of white-ball cricket in the coming years. Ashwin returned to the limited-overs set-up this year with the T20 World Cup after a gap of almost four years. Ashwin, who has been a regular in India’s Test side for the past decade, lost his place in white-ball cricket in the past few years due to the emergence of wrist spinners in Indian cricket.

Ashwin made a sensational comeback to limited-overs format with impressive performances in the 2021 T20 WC and New Zealand series.

Rohit heaped huge praise on Ashwin’s versatility and called him an all-rounder bowler who can bowl anytime and anywhere.

“Ashwin will give you that flexibility, you can use him in the powerplay or the middle over, so having a bowler like that – an all-rounder bowler I’d like to call – who can bowl anytime and anywhere in whatever situation, is always important,” Sharma was quoted as saying while speaking to journalist Boria Majumdar on ‘Backstage with Boria’

From international cricket to franchise league, Ashwin has bowled well in both powerplay overs and at the death as Rohit said that the veteran spinner is a great addition to the Indian team.

“You don’t want one-dimensional bowlers where you know he can only bowl outside powerplay, he cannot bowl in the death, can only bowl to right-handers, can only bowl to left-handers. The more options you have with bowlers the better, that’s what I felt,” he stated.

“I thought he’d be a great addition, and I think he’s here to stay. He’s definitely here to stay,” the Indian ODI captain added.

Meanwhile, Ashwin continues to impress in Test cricket as he has bridged the gap with top-ranked bowler Pat Cummins in ICC Test rankings after finishing with four wickets in each innings in India’s 372-run victory.

Ashwin has gained 43 rating points to reach a total of 883 and is 67 points ahead of third-placed Josh Hazlewood.

In a recent interaction with his fans, Ravichandran Ashwin answered many interesting questions on YouTube. One of the fans asked him about his favorite current player from Pakistan to which Ashwin replied:

“I have always been following Mohammad Rizwan. I have been speaking about him for a while about the quality he brings in his knocks but I think the standout batter and the ways he bats, the hundred in Australia, it has to be Babar Azam. After that the sticker that has been doing the rounds: Shaheen Shah Afridi. Real talent. Pakistan has always had talented cricketers and they have more now.”

He is a textbook Chennai cricket nerd. They come up with endless stats, they talk about nuances in cricket. More into history of the game. They appreciate players from other countries more than fans from other states. Zaheer Abbas, David Gower, Gordon Greenidge had cult status

Yeah lol story of our lives growing up.

Most ODI centuries was Desmond Haynes , kept waiting for Sachin to break it ,was afraid Anwar would be break it before him but naw lol

After a long wait of 4 years, Ravi Ashwin is likely to make his comeback in Team India's ODI set-up for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa.

Once a regular member of the ODI team, Ashwin has been out of the 50-over squad since 2017. The senior off-spinner made his T20I comeback a few months back and his success in the shortest format is likely to see him being rewarded with a place in the ODI team.

Media reports say that Ashwin is set to be included in the ODI team when the selectors name the squad.

Once the leader of the spin attack across all formats, Ashwin hasn't played an ODI since the away series against West Indies (in 2017).

If he could bowl as well as he speaks then he would have never been dropped. Now he's getting selected back because of his loud mouth and politics going in and not because he has done anything in shorter format to get his place back.

Take this - in the 2021 IPL, until he got a free wicket in his last over of the tournament, where eventually he was hit for a six and lost the game, Ashwin was the WORST of all the bowlers ( in terms of wickets taken) who bowled atleast 10 overs in the tournament. This was a list of 45+ bowlers and to stand last in that list and included bowlers who played 3 or 4 matches as well, is a big shame. Ashwin on the other hand played 12 matches.

As much as i disliked shastri for his OTT comments, Shastri and Kohli atleast ensured that players who actually win the matches get played in international cricket.

For that Ashwin needs to be fit to play 'every single test'. Do you recall a single away series, where he didn't get injured midway? Aus, Eng, Sa everywhere he gets injured more consistently than he takes wickets in those countries.

International cricket? Ashwin wipes the floor with every test spinner currently playing, including Lyon, who he outbowled in the most recent indo Australia test series in Australia.

Ashwin is getting chances because he is ATG level player.

Deserved recall — amazed he has been out of the team for so long tbh.

He's been a bit off-colour during the first two Tests in South Africa:

0/37 and 2/18 at Centurion; and 0/35 and 1/26 at Johannesburg

Ashwin's colour story depends on whether he is hosting or touring.

While hosting, it is always on and while touring, it is always off. Nothing new here. Repeated the same bottle-job story of Joburg' 13 when he produced figures of 0-83 in that 458 run chase.

Ironically Ashwin was one reason they didnt chase 458 that day. All the pacers were getting smacked while Ash went at 2 RPO.In the end it got too much for SA.

Joburg and Centurion don't assist spin much. But Cape Town and Durban do so expecting better next match

2/18 - No-10 Batsmen Kagiso Rabada & No-11 Batsmen Lungi Ngidi :14:

He took only one main wicket in 4 innings combined

Nathan Lyon >>> Ashwin in SENA
Ashwin is home track bully.

I think Ashwin despite his atg record will not be looked back when he retires as fondly as a Warne, Murali or even a Kumble due to his lack of impact full perfomances while touring.

For me he is an Atg albeit a low tier one and has done decently even away where he has complimented his pacers well on multiple occasions but I do see the point of those people who question him when he goes Awol especially in 2nd innings during away tests.

He is an incompetent cricketer in SENA conditions. Averages 20 with bat and 40 with bowl now. Shadab Khan is a greater cricketer than him in these conditions.

3 wickets at 60.66 and a strike rate of 128.3 for Ashwin across the series.

Ultimately, justifies Kohli and Shastri's decision to drop him in England.

Even in India... Ashwin has greatly benefitted from kind of tracks BCCI rolls out for visitors.

Any spinner would decimate visitors in India. Axar Patel or Jadeja (who doesn't even spin it lol), both have pre-WWI kind of stats in India, lol.

And IMO Ashwin is a choker. He is not a big stage player with his leg stump lines in 4th innings...

Yea rite, another ATG performance in SA! Lyon win matches for Australia, not just in Australia but away as well. Ashwin is a dud, averages 45 in Australia and 55 in SA. He's in news usually only because of his interviews, and never because of performances. The guy can't take a wicket outside India and yet had the audacity to say that he felt hurt just because shastri called someone else as no:1 bowler outside India.

Hard to disagree on that. If jayant yadav or Washington would play test matches in India, then their average or strike rate won't be very different from Ashwin. He's a mediocre bowler who just has a embellished record because of Indian pitches.

Hang on a second there!
Don't you know that Michael Clark and Joe Root are world class offspinners!

Anil Kumble should never be compared with him. Anil bhai was a true match winner

Would you ever call an asian batsman a great batsman if he doesn't score a single century in the SENA countries after 10 years and multiple tours and 25 test matches? Forget ATG, no sane mind would categorise such a batsman as great batsman. Change batsman to bowler and century by a 5 wicket hall, and that's what Ashwin has been.

You cant compare a T20 cricketer with an established test cricketer

Very poor series for Ashwin.

And one of several senior players who underperformed in South Africa and let his team down.

Said it before the SA series that this guy is getting to play outside India or in ODIs because of his big mouth interviews and sooner or later he will be exposed. Esp. with Kohli out as captain, selectors also won't have an agenda against Kohli and so Ashwin will be shown his place pretty soon.

These two finger spinners from India are so over-rated because of the kind of pitches they have played on.
Impossible to compare them to anyone from the previous eras.

India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Day 3: Ravichandran Ashwin Equals Kapil Dev's Tally Of 434 Test Wickets

IND vs SL, 1st Test, Day 3: Ravichandran Ashwin equalled Kapil Dev's tally of 434 Test wickets on Sunday, at Mohali.

All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday equalled Kapil Dev's tally of 434 Test wickets. Ashwin achieved the feat on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. When the spinner takes one more wicket, he will become India's second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format, only behind Anil Kumble. At the lunch break on Day 3, Sri Lanka's score in the second innings read 10/1 -- still trailing by 390 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne (8*) and Pathum Nissanka (1*) are currently at the crease.

After being asked to follow on, Sri Lanka once again got off to bad start as the side lost opening batter Lahiru Thirimanne (0) in the third over of the innings. Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka then ensured that the visitors do not lose any more wickets.

Earlier, resuming Day 3 at 138/4 in the first innings, overnight batters Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka added 53 runs more to the total and this saw Nissanka going past his half-century.

India finally got the breakthrough in the 58th over as Jasprit Bumrah got the better of Asalanka (29).

Niroshan Dickwella (2) failed to impress with the bat and he managed to score just 2 before being sent to the pavilion by Ravindra Jadeja. In the same over, Jadeja removed Suranga Lakmal (0) and Sri Lanka was reduced to 164/7.

In the end, Sri Lanka was bundled out for 174, handing India a lead of 400 runs and the hosts enforced the follow-on.

New Delhi: India continued their dominance on home turf as they romped to a fourth consecutive series whitewash in a span of four months as Rohit Sharma and Co won the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on Monday by a margin of 238 runs. Premium spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin who took 6 wickets in the Day/Night Pink-Ball Test became the first cricketer in the history of ICC World Test Championships to scalp 100 wickets.

In the ongoing cycle the Rajasthan Royals off-spinner have taken 29 wickets in just 7 matches and took his overall tally to 100 in just 21 matches. In the previous 2019-21 cycle, Ashwin ended up as the second-highest wicket-taker with 71 wickets in 14 matches as his side lost to New Zealand in the inaugural Final of the World Test Championships.

In the previous Test, the former CSK and Punjab Kings cricketer etched his name into the history books by becoming the second highest wicket-taker for Team India in Test cricket. He broke Kapil Dev’s record of 434 Test scalps.

He currently is at 8th position in the all-time list of most Test wickets. He has a total of 442 wickets in 86 matches. As far as the active players are concerned, he occupies the third position after James Anderson (640) and Stuart Broad (537).

In the current WTC cycle bowling statistics, the 35-year old stands at 6th position.

Greatest match winner ever in home conditions but not good enough overseas.

Longevity is always a hallmark of a true sportsmen. Looking his numbers you would say nothing done wrong but then he has been used wisely by Team India. Selected for the correct series and for a while a regular part of the Test team.

Saqlain Mushtaq on Ashwin:

"I feel sorry for Ashwin because I don't understand why they removed him from white-ball cricket. They have wasted his years. He is a complete package as he can bat as well. There are two types of cricketers, those who remain economical as well as those who can set traps for wickets. I feel Ashwin can play the role of both."

"Dropping Ashwin was unfair on both India as well as the player. But I think coach Rahul and captain Rohit might have had a say in bringing him back into the fold and it is a great strategy"

Ashwin should be a role model for all cricketers not just Indians. He knows special off-spin is fast becoming an extinct art in LOIs due to 2 new balls/ field restrictions. Almost all the top-ranked spinners are leggies. The next most effective has been left-arm orthodox (Agar/Imad/Maharaja/Axar/Jadeja/Santner). Off spinners are mostly part-timers. Ashwin broke the norm by continuously reinventing himself. It is bit like how software engineering should be upskilling themselves to stay in the job.

India's greatest ever spinner. No question. Definitely cricketer with highest sporting IQ and game awareness in this era and likely of all time too.

Should India pick Ashwin for the game vs Pakistan? And on cost of whom? Axar or Chahal?

Axar and Ashwin. Axar for right handers and Ashwin for lefties. Ashwin was the most economical in the run fest against SA and that too in coin sized grounds. Aussie grounds are big and hence have more leverage.

Ashwin never delivers in important loi games.
I will take Chahal over him.

Just like Ashwin, Chahal also falters in important games. They both have their own pros and cons.

Chahal is a wrist spinner and a wicket taker who won us a bilateral match as concussion substitute in Australia by luring the batsman with the flight. That could be handy in Australia. But he is a poor fielder and a nil with the bat.

Ashwin plus is his batting and the fact that he is the only bowler of the three who takes the ball away from left handers and has probably more variations.

'I cursed Dinesh Karthik when I walked in to bat' vs Pakistan: Ashwin recalls last-over heroics in T20 World Cup
Ashwin revealed that he had cursed Dinesh Karthik for getting out in that situation, leaving him with the hard task of scoring 2 runs off the last ball. “As I walked in to bat, I cursed Dinesh Karthik for a second," he said after India beat Pakistan in T20 World Cup.

Who were the heroes of India's last-ball victory against Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday? Virat Kohli, of course! His unbeaten 82 off 53 balls is widely being hailed as his best-ever T20I knock. Hardik Pandya with both bat and ball. He picked up three crucial wickets and then made an invaluable contribution of 40 with the bat. How can we forget Arshdeep Singh? It was his burst with the new ball that really pushed Pakistan on the backfoot after India opted to bowl first. He dismissed Pakistan's two best T20 batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the powerplay. Is that it? Was there any other noteworthy contribution? Think hard... Yes, Ravichandran Ashwin!

His bowling figures were 3 overs none for 23 but it was his contribution with the bat that helped India win. But wait, doesn't the scorecard say he scored an unbeaten 1 off 1 ball, how is that a match-winning contribution? It is when you walk out to bat with your team needing 2 runs off 1 ball.

The way Ashwin guessed that Pakistan left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz would aim for his pads, stood still and left the ball to collect a wide under extreme pressure spoke volumes about his presence of mind. "The moment I saw the ball going down the leg side, I decided not to have any business playing it and decided to leave it alone and got one run for the wide. As soon as I got that run, I was so relaxed," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The veteran off-spinner also revealed that he had cursed Dinesh Karthik for getting out in that situation, leaving him with the hard task of scoring 2 runs off the last ball. “As I walked in to bat, I cursed Dinesh Karthik for a second and then later thought, ‘No no, we still have time, let us do what we were here for’. It seemed like I was walking for ages to get to the pitch,” Ashwin said.

Karthik, India's desingated finisher, quite uncharactaristically attempeted a slog-sweep, lost his balance and got stumped when 2 runs were needed off 2 balls. In a video uploaded by BCCI after the match, the India keeper was seen thanking Ashwin for 'saving his life'.

Ashwin explained the conversation between him and Kohli out in the middle.

"Then I saw Virat Kohli and he told me so many things. But I thought of only one thing after seeing him. “God has given you so much today. So how will he ever let me down? So at least for you, won’t let me get these runs?” See the ball, then place it in a vacant space and just run, this is what I thought to myself," he added.

And that is exactly what he did. Nawaz had mid-off up in the ring and Ashwin just lifted it over the fielder's head to win India the match. As many described, it was perhaps one of the most crucial 1-run innings in the history of Indian cricket.

"As soon as I got that run, I was so happy. Now, no one will throw any stones at my home! (Laughs) If I can lift the ball and place it somewhere, it will be good. I thought God has made this guy smash Haris Rauf over his head for a 6 on the backfoot and over the square leg for another with a flick. Won’t God allow my chip over the infield in some vacant area? And thank god, it did. What a moment," he said.

Ashwin bats okay in pressure much like how Sachin bowls well in pressure lol

Speaking of the incident to BCCI.tv, Ashwin said: "Somebody asked me if that Nawaz ball had turned and hit you on the pads, what would you have done?. I said I would've quickly rushed to the dressing room picked up my Twitter and said 'Thank you for all the great times I have had in my cricketing career. It was a wonderful journey (laughs)'."

13th Test fifty for Ashwin! Amazing record for a tailender.

Ashwin is GOAT. I would argue without Ashwin and Jadeja’s all round contributions, Indian test team would not have won half the matches they did.

Genuine ask rounders at this level are very hard to find, and India have had two for a long long time.

A dogged 71-run stand between Shreyas Iyer and R Ashwin came to India’s rescue as the visitors fought back from a hopeless situation to pull off a three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the second Test and clinch the series 2-0 here on Sunday.

With India at 74 for seven chasing 145, Bangladesh were on course for their first-ever Test win against their formidable neighbours before Iyer (29 not out off 46) and Aswhin (42 not out off 62) denied them with an unbeaten 71-run standoff 105 balls.

Ravichandran Ashwin was on the cusp of adding another feather to his hat but missed out on the opportunity. Before the second test match, he was seven wickets short of 450 test wickets. He grabbed 6 wickets across 2 innings in the second test but missed out on the opportunity to become the second faster players to reach 450 wickets.

He still has the opportunity in his hand as Anil Kumble reached 450 test wickets in 93 matches and Ashwin reached 449 test wickets in 88 matches. He would have to wait for this opportunity as India won’t play any test until February 2023.

However, Ashwin recorded a different record to his name and joined an elite list of players to have 400 test wickets and 3000 test runs. Kapil Dev, Shane Warne, Richard Hadlee, and Shaun Pollock are the other members of the list.

Ashwin now has 449 test wickets and 3043 test runs across 88 international test matches. A remarkable feat for the Indian marquee spinner. Team India’s next test assignment would be a home test series against Australia in Feb 2023.

Most underrated and under appreciated for his genuine match winner contribution to India in the last 10 years or so.

“Overthinking” is a perception that has followed me ever since I wore the Indian jersey with pride. India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has risen to the top of the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings as James Anderson’s stay at the summit comes to an end.

Ashwin claims the top spot among bowlers after taking six wickets in his most recent performance, in India's emphatic victory over Australia in the second Test, with Anderson dropping to second place after England's stunning loss to New Zealand in the Wellington Test.

Wonder why Ashwin is not talked about in ATG terms?

wDisj3s.png

very difficult to be seen as ATG when you have 65 wickets in 23 matches in SENA countries with not a single fifer, never won India a single match in the top 4 countries outside India. He is a good bowler but any decent first class Indian spinner will end up taking atleast 60-70% of wickets Ashwin has taken in India on the tailormade pitches made for him.

Precisely this. His figure away from custom made pitches are embarrassing. Not even a single 5fer in SENA.

During his 6/91 in Ahmedabad, Ashwin overtook India legend Anil Kumble to become the team's leading wicket-taker against Australia in Test cricket.

Ashwin was the pick of India bowlers on an unforgiving Ahmedabad surface. He picked up six wickets on a pitch where the next best effort for India was 2/134 by pacer Mohammad Shami.

During his 47.2 overs in the first innings, the off-spinner didn’t try too many variations. Instead, he backed his accuracy and maintained discipline on two taxing days of cricket. This showed in his economy rate of 1.92, which was the second best for India.

Amongst his wickets was the centurion Cameron Green, who fell after scoring a career-best 114. He also accounted for Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy, who had frustrated India with their 34 and 41 lower down the order.

This was his 32nd five-for in Tests. For India, only Kumble (35) has more five-fors.

However, this wasn't Ashwin's only feat during the day.

He managed to become India’s leading wicket-taker against Australia in Tests during his six-for.

Against the Baggy Greens, the off-spinner now has 113 wickets at an average of 28.1 with seven five-fors to his name. He went past Kumble’s 111 wickets after trapping Murphy leg-before.

The uniqueness of Ashwin's five-for doesn't just end there. He now holds the record for the second-highest five-wicket hauls at home behind Muttiah Muralitharan, who has achieved this feat 45 times. Ashwin is tied with another Sri Lanka spin great Rangana Herath, who too picked up five wickets in an innings on 26 times at home. Also, Ashwin's 6/91 also brings his level pecking with England legend James Anderson as the two players with 32-five-wicket-hauls in Tests – the joint sixth-highest. Besides, Ashwin also became the leading Indian wicket-taker against Australia in Tests, also going past Kumble and is currently stands as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy along with Nathan Lyon with 113 wickets.

Very good performance considering that had he not picked those wickets, Australia would have probably gone on to score a lot more and buried any chance of India winning the match.
