[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Ravichandran Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket [Update@ Post# 1376]

More than 500 wickets for this guy in test cricket and 100 of them came against England. Those are some numbers if you think about it.

Ashwin completes another historic feat against England

Ravichandran Ashwin scripted history when he dismissed Jonny Bairstow early on Day 1 of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi on 23 February.

Ashwin became the first India player to pick 100 Test wickets against England after he scalped Bairstow, leg before wicket. Bairstow was initially given not out, but upon review, the on-field decision had to be overturned in favour of India.

Ashwin now has 100+ wickets against two teams – England and Australia (114).

He has also scored 1085 Test runs against England, making him only the fourth player in history to complete the double feat of 100 wickets and 1000 runs against England after Gary Sobers (West Indies), Monty Noble (Australia) and George Giffen (Australia).

The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah congratulated Ashwin on his remarkable feat in a tweet, calling him ‘one of the greatest spin bowlers in cricket history’.

“Setting new records yet again, @ashwinravi99 (Ashwin) has made history by becoming the first Indian to take 100 test wickets against England. His outstanding performance further cements his status as one of the greatest spin bowlers in cricket history. His extraordinary feat underscores his talent, and dedication to the sport. Congratulations!”

The off-spinner went past another milestone in the previous Test in Rajkot. On Day 2, Ashwin marked his 500th wicket in Test cricket by dismissing Zak Crawley. He joined an elite group as the ninth bowler in Test history to achieve this milestone, following in the footsteps of Anil Kumble as the only other India bowler to do so.

Ashwin is now one match away from playing his 100th Test for India.

India started well with five wickets in the first session but a 31st Test century from Joe Root helped England put up a strong fight. With the help of Ben Foakes (47) and Ollie Robinson (31*), Root (106*) managed to carry the visitors to 302/7 at stumps on the opening day of the fourth Test.

Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a significant milestone during the third day of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi. He surpassed the legendary Anil Kumble to become the bowler with the most wickets taken in Tests in India.

Ashwin achieved this feat by dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, elevating his tally to 351 wickets. Anil Kumble had previously held the record with 350 wickets in 63 matches in India, averaging 24.88.

During the same Test, Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to claim 100 wickets against England in Test cricket.

Nasser Hussain hails the great cricketer Ravi Ashwin, as he wrote in his column in the local magazine:

"People have been saying Ashwin has had a quiet series, but this game has been a reminder that you don’t keep a great cricketer down. Root proved as much in England’s first innings, and Ashwin underlined the point in their second."

"You could see the fire in his eyes when Rohit gave him the new ball: he was determined to stamp his class on the series. He even treated us to a carrom ball to get rid of Foakes."

"Rohit Sharma got it spot on when he opened the bowling with Ravichandran Ashwin, after delaying his entry for too long in the first innings at Rajkot. That allowed Duckett, who has struggled against Ashwin, to get off to a flyer, and Rohit wasn’t going to make that mistake again."

Landmark milestone for Ravichandran Ashwin in Dharamsala

Ravichandran Ashwin becomes the 14th Indian player to play 100 Test matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin joined an elite list of players with his 100th appearance in Test match cricket for India.

The off-spinner, who made his Test debut in 2011, completed 500 Test wickets in Rajkot, becoming only the second Indian to reach the landmark.

"The desire to excel hasn't changed, wanting to keep on evolving as a cricketer, that's something that's been organic to me right from my club cricket days in Chennai," Ashwin had said during the Rajkot Test after completing the milestone.

Ashwin recorded his 35th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in the Ranchi Test match, equalling Anil Kumble's record for the most five-fors by an Indian in Test cricket.

Ashwin also became only the second bowler after Muttiah Muralidaran to achieve 500 wickets in less than 100 Test matches.

Since Ashwin made his Test debut in November 2011, only Nathan Lyon has claimed more wickets than him in the format, making him one of the most prolific modern-day Test bowlers.

With the latest achievement, Ashwin joins some elite Indian cricketers who have played over 100 Test matches. The last to achieve the milestone from India was Cheteshwar Pujara.

Sachin Tendulkar, with 200 Test matches, holds the record for most appearances in the format internationally.

"R Ashwin Cut Off My Calls, That's The Respect We Get": Ex India Star Slams Veteran Spinner

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is on the cusp of his 100th Test. With 99 matches in the India whites to his name, Ashwin will feature in the longest format of the game for the 100th time as the national team takes on England in the 5th match of the series in Dharamsala, starting Thursday. As the entire cricketing fraternity is going ga-ga over Ashwin's moment of history, former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan isn't happy with the way he has been treated by the veteran spinner.

Taking to social media, Sivaramakrishnan claimed that Ashwin disconnected his calls and didn't even reply to his congratulatory messages on the 100th Test milestone.

"Tried calling him a few times to wish him for his 100th Test. Just cut off my call. Sent him a message, no reply. That's the respect we former cricketers get," the former India spinner wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Ashwin takes the 36th Test five-wicket haul and now he has the most Five-wicket hauls in Test for India.

Soon he will be taking his 10-fer as well in this game if he bowls.

Ravichandran Ashwin - Remember the name

India vs England series top wicket-takers:

Ravichandran Ashwin - 26
Tom Hartley - 22
Jasprit Bumrah - 19
Kuldeep Yadav - 19
Ravindra Jadeja - 19

I judge cricketers not by averages, but the memories they provide. Don't have much memorable moments from Ashwin, on the other hand Kuldeep has already given some memorable performances.

He is a genius. Period. THe variations he has at his beck and call is astonishing. I don't think any other spinner from India can last that long and produce memorable spell after spell for more than a decade.

LSRK has been acting up so badly in social media lately. It all started with him being not considered for World Cup commentary gig few months back.

It was a worthless controversy, I am happy that ash has not reacted to this motormouth’s blabbering.

I had different impression of LSRK before I read this. I found him quite humble when I heard him during his commentary stint. Of course, his voice was jarring to ears but one can't deny his knowledge of game especially spin bowling.

Things must have gone pear shaped for him since then. Also, these public outbursts don't help him

He made some pretty horrible (especially against Ashwin) comments on Twitter during the World Cup.

If reports from local media friends are to be believed then he is facing quite a few issues on the personal front (losing out star sports contract was not the least of them). Most, if not, all of his problems appear to be self-inflicted. It is only getting worse by the day, though.

Best bowler of the series but Tom could have overtaken him had he was not injured.

TBH, no chance of Ashwin, Jadeja going anywhere for next 2-3 years so lots to do for these challengers in the meantime. It's possible Kuldeep establishes himself as the teams main spinner in this time too.

R Ashwin 'Returns To CSK' Ahead Of IPL 2025 Auction, But In New Role

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took up a new role with the Chennai Super Kings, a franchise he played for the Indian Premier League from 2008 to 2015. Though Ashwin remains associated with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL at present, he took up the responsibility of CSK's high-performance center after being roped in by owners India Cements. The center is expected to be fully operational by the start of IPL 2025 season, with Ashwin playing key role in its development, especially with regards to CSK's academies.

"Growing the game and contributing to the cricketing fraternity is my primary focus. I feel elated to be back to where it all began for me," Ashwin said on his return to India Cements.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was also elated to have the iconic player resume his association with the franchise.

"We are excited to have Ashwin back. He will have a huge role to play at Superkings Ventures and our High-Performance Centre. He is one of the best cricketers from Tamil Nadu and is known for his drive towards excellence. His commitment to the game at any level, be it for India, Tamil Nadu, or even the club, is well known. He will be a great person to guide the center and nurture the young talents coming through," he said as per Sportstar.

Though Ashwin's return to CSK has taken place on an admiration level, the move has triggered speculations over his potential switch to the Super Kings as a player too.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, a mega auction will be held. Though the details of retention aren't finalised, it has been said the franchises might only be allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players each. If that happens, Ashwin might not be retained by the Royals.

During his time at CSK, Ashwin helped the MS Dhoni-led side win consecutive IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. Even during the next four seasons, Ashwin helped CSK reach the playoffs every single time.

Ravichandran Ashwin said in a launch event for his book:

“It’s an evolving relationship. MS didn’t even know someone like me existed in 2008. And because of that, I made it my life’s goal — from 2009, it was to get the wicket of MS Dhoni. When a person has a goal like this, he will go crazy when an opportunity to achieve it pops up.”

“We were playing the Challenger Trophy, and I bowled an unbelievable spell. MS would struggle through that spell in Nagpur. Once, when he tried to play, the ball went through his gates. I got him out in the final. From then on, I think he saw somebody with skill, and the relationship matured.”

“One of MS’ usual qualities is that, if he decides this horse (a player) is not ready to race, he will not use you. He needs to know you’re a horse. But, once he knows you’re a horse, only when you feel like giving up, he will look past you. That is MS Dhoni; he believes in you.”

Ravi Ashwin on the Right-to-Match card in IPL via his YouTube channel:

"There is no rule more unfair for a player than the Right-to-Match (RTM). There is no fair value at all. There is a bidder, with KKR and Mumbai Indians fighting. For one of those teams, the bid has gone up to 6 crores. What does SRH say? 'You bought the player, right? Return the player back.' So, if you give three RTMs to each team, the players will only go virtually empty-handed."

Yes, he can make a seamless transition to the broadcasting booth. If he wants to. He is extremely successful financially. Sometimes that acts as a demotivation in such cases. Let's see what he does.

Ashwin still has some cricket left in him. He did pretty well in the TNPL and took his team to a title win, a good speaker as well.

Overrated cricketer. Stats are heavily inflated by home bashing.
In his defense, he has been the first player to be dropped from the playing XI as soon as India start an overseas tour. Which I think has been very unfair to him.

Why was it unfair? Shardul and Jadeja both contributed more so dropping him was correct decision.

He got a chance in South Africa when Jadeja got injured and as usual, he disappointed.

The Australia tour that we like to say, everyone contributed there. Jadeja picked 7 wickets in 2 games, one of them he didn't bowled much due to injury and scored 85 runs at average of 85. Shardul won India Gabba and Oval test. His bowling average is better than Ashwin in those conditions.

'Took Me 2 Years': Ravichandran Ashwin Reveals the Story Behind the Iconic 'Carrom Ball'

India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, Ravichandran Ashwin opened up on the story about his carrom-ball. For those who are unaware, it is the delivery that moves away from the right-hander with the flick of the middle finger and the delivery was first bowled by the former Sri Lankan international, Ajantha Mendis.

Some of the best batters in the world struggled to get a read on the carrom delivery. Ashwin had revealed to PTI that he saw Mendis first bowl the delivery during an age-group camp in Chennai.

However, it was not easy to execute the delivery as he desired, he had revealed that he began practising the variation back in 2006, but it took him as many as 3-4 years of work behind the scenes to get to a point where he was pleased with his execution during a match.

Ashwin said, “I started bowling those balls in the nets in 2006 or 2007 onwards, which was probably the second season for me in first-class cricket.

It took me a good two years before I implemented it in the south zone leg matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (KS Subbaiah Pillai Trophy) in 2008. By 2010, I was probably pretty confident about the pace at which I bowled,” he added.

The veteran off-spinner remains a starter for the Indian Test side where he rarely whips out the variation. Ashwin has grown to rely on his stock delivery more often rather than the carrom delivery. He has a more patient approach to the game which has allowed him to cross 500 Test wickets milestone in the recently concluded home series against England at home.

However, he does implement the carrom ball. This can be seen more often when he plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he uses his variations, and angles from the crease among many others to get the better of the batters.

Play till 40? R Ashwin reveals his retirement plans ahead of Bangladesh Tests

Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, now 37, has addressed growing speculation about his future in international cricket. While still a key figure in India's Test squad, Ashwin clarified that his retirement will come only when he no longer feels the drive to improve his game.

Speaking ahead of India's home Test series against Bangladesh, Ashwin revealed that he hasn't set any specific retirement timeline. Instead, his decision will hinge on his personal motivation and performance. "There is nothing like that in my mind. I am only thinking about one day at a time because when you get older, you have to put in extra effort every single day. It's not the same. I have put in a lot of effort in the last 3-4 years. I haven't decided (retirement), but the day I feel that today I don't want to improve, I will leave. That's all," Ashwin said during a conversation with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel when asked if one can expect him to play till 40.

Despite nearing 40, Ashwin remains highly motivated, stating that his daily effort and passion for the game fuel his performance. Ashwin holds the top spot in the ICC Test bowler rankings and will play a crucial role in India's upcoming five-Test home series, starting with two matches against Bangladesh, followed by three against New Zealand. With 516 wickets in 100 Test matches, he is India's second-highest wicket-taker in the format, behind only Anil Kumble, who holds the record at 619.

While many believe Ashwin could surpass Kumble's tally, the off-spinner downplayed such goals, choosing to focus on enjoying his game. "I haven't set any targets for myself. Anil Bhai wants me to break his record, but I'm just happy living day by day. I don't want to lose my love for the game by setting targets," he explained.

Ashwin also reflected on the challenges he faced between 2018 and 2020, a period where injuries and form affected his game. "I know how my life changed after that tough phase. I'm just holding on to my joy of cricket, and the moment I feel I'm losing it, I'll step away." The seasoned bowler acknowledged that all players eventually leave the game and that others will take their place, continuing the legacy of Indian cricket. "We all play, and we all have to leave. Somebody else will come and do well. It's Indian cricket," he concluded.

Usman Khawaja, who is likely to play for Australia in the Test series against India, while speaking to local Indian sports media outlet:

"Ravi is a very good bowler. He is very strategic. He always has a plan and tries to figure it out and stay ahead of the game, which I respect. I respect his cricketing brain. It's always cool to play against him and I look forward to the challenge.”

Fastest Indian to take 50 wickets, 100 wickets, 150 wickets, 200 wickets, 250 wickets, 300 wickets, 350 wickets, 400 wickets, 450 wickets & 500 wickets in Tests.

Happy Birthday to him.

Ashwin has been a great servant to Bharatiya cricket. This knock may not mean much as it’s come against an awful minnow team but in the context these are useful runs.

On current form their bowling has been quite good

Yet another homecoming masterclass from Ravi Ashwin, bringing up his sixth Test century off 108 balls against Bangladesh in 1st Test

It's his second Test hundred in Chennai

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik said while speaking on sports media outlet:

"It was outstanding, the way they batted. The experience they have, the way they started, the kind of shots Ashwin played, the backfoot punch first up... Jadeja going over mid-on and getting boundaries. They came in with singles and odd boundaries, got to their milestones, and got a lot more comfortable. Then they went on to play superb shots."

"What a set of all-rounders we have. We have Axar Patel not playing, and understandably so. Sometimes I feel people value only when they're not around anymore, and these two people will be valued a lot more when they're done. These two have been phenomenal for India in this format.”

I Used To Respond To Pressure In Past, But Now Want To Play With Smile On Face: R Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin on Friday said he has liberated himself from the clutches of external and internal pressure, and now he is just looking to play cricket "with a smile on face." Ashwin made a back-on-the-wall hundred on the first day of the opening Test here against Bangladesh to rescue India from a precarious 144 for six in the company of an equally resolute Ravindra Jadeja. The 38-year-old leveraged on that innings to drive home the point that he now only responds to pressure situations on a cricket field, unlike in the past when he reacted to every needle-point.

I do enjoy and embrace pressure. There's no doubt about it. It does give you opportunities to be able to be pushed to a corner and then try and respond. But I was critical too, earlier (of himself and others), because a lot of pressure has been put on me by people. I've put pressure on myself," Ashwin told reporters on Friday.

"The pressure I've always responded to - in answering someone, in a performance or in a press conference. But it's not like that now. I want to play cricket with a smile on my face. I promised myself 4-5 years ago that I won't respond to anyone, and I've been maintaining that till now," he added.

The mental detachment to situations and people around him has helped Ashwin to clearly demarcate between his primary and secondary suits - bowling and batting.

"Bowling and batting are very separate sports in the same game. One is done consciously, and the other one is done subconsciously.

"For me to compartmentalise both has taken its own due and at this stage, I'm able to sequence that and split both of them," he began.

So, how did he keep his focus on the batting during his 189-minute innings, spanning over three sessions and consuming 240 balls? Ashwin took precisely the opposite route that he would have taken as a bowler.

"The mind can play tricks because I'm a bowler who plays on 12-18 balls or 24 balls ahead when I'm sequencing it. But as a batter, I shouldn't do that. So, I just used my experience to focus on the ball and hitting it as I see it," he noted.

The Chennai man also said he has worked on his batting in the last three years to add more layers to it, so that he can be more versatile from a team perspective.

"So, I have worked a lot (on his batting)... quite a lot on how I can maximise my shots, maximise my game, work on how I can play fast bowling, all that sort of stuff. So, glad it's coming out nicely. I am pretty content with what's happening."

The fructification of his efforts has also left him at a happy space - personally as well as professionally, and he enjoys that a lot in the highly competitive world of modern sport.

"You feel happy about it, having been in a contest and coming out successful out of the contest. So, yeah, the underlying truth is that it gives me a lot of happiness competing in this game.

"This is just a vehicle for me to compete and feel good about myself and be happy at the end of the day," he elaborated.

Ashwin, reflecting on his long-standing camaraderie with Jadeja, spoke in detail about their bond, forged through many years of playing together, in the IPL and rising through the ranks of Indian cricket:

“It’s happened [our partnership in cricket]. You don't plan for such things,” Ashwin said after the second day's play. “Jaddu's one cricketer who's evolved so nicely. I always envy him, I have made amply clear.

“So gifted, so talented. He's found ways to maximise his potential, keeps it really simple, can repeat it day in, day out. I wish I could be him, but I am glad I am myself.

“He's an exceptionally good cricketer, I am happy for him.

“In so many ways, watching him bat over the last couple of years has given me insights on how better I can be. Both of us have grown together, both of us have done some special things.

“We really value one another at this stage, and both of us are enjoying each other's success, more than ever before.”

I rate Ashwin as the best spinner India ever produced, for me he is the spin bowling version of Shaun Pollock.
Definitely rate him as an ATG.

This is yet another masterclass bowling from Ashwin on his home ground.

Most five-fers in Tests
67 M Muralidaran (133 Tests)
37 R Ashwin (101) *
37 Shane Warne (145)
36 Richard Hadlee (86)
35 Anil Kumble (132)

Ashwin might look innocuous, that's were his strength comes from. He is not a raging turner of the cricket ball like Murali or any of the great offies before him. But he does have a sharp cricketing brain and very good accuracy to bowl ball after ball in block hole (in particularly Very good against Left handers).

Luckily he is by far the best bowler to have a well disguised Carom ball in India (Even Bhajji, the Indian media's darling can't do that). He won the bowler of the tournament in Champions league held at South Africa for very good reasons. He's been leading the wickets pack in Indian Domestic scene for the good part of last 3 years. He is no mug with the bat either, and can do a decent enough job at the lower order.

In whatever little opportunities that Ashwin has got, he has proven his worth as a team player and as a captain's bowler. So I would say don't write him off so early. I can assure you he is no chawla or bhajji, Ashwin is very different.

I really hope and pray that he proves many of his fans back home here in Tamilnadu (and rest of the India) right (if only MSD could give him an opportunity) about his skill/ability.
Always chuffed to see my belief and expectations from Ashwin getting proved time and again.

Hence a shameless replug (quoted post of mine from this very thread) from some 13 years back 😅

Ashwin should end his career with 700 wickets.

Would have happened if the team management wasn’t so harsh on him in away test matches despite Ashwin showing remarkable improvements.

Ideally should have retired as 2nd highest test wicket taker after Murali.

Now i will be glad if he overtakes Anil bhai.

How does Ashwin compare with Courtney Walsh? After today's performance Ashwin has 522 wickets and Walsh has 519 wickets. Walsh played 132 tests and Ashwin has completed 101 tests. Walsh's batting average is 7.52 with highest score 30.

Is Ashwin clearly the superior bowler? Maybe Kumble is the better spinner because

1. DRS. Kumble's bowling particularly would have been tailor made for DRS - top spinners, stump to stump line, always threatening the LBW.

2. Kumble played 69 tests away out of his 132 test career. In contrast, Ashwin has only played 39 tests away in his 101 test long career.

3. The bowling attack Kumble was part of, particularly when playing away, was orders of magnitude weaker than the current Indian bowling attack. It's highlighted in their respective home records that are strikingly similar despite Ashwin having the benefit of DRS.

4. Half of Kumble's career was in the decade of 2000s when batting was the easiest - historically. No decade saw more runs scored per wicket and even India had some of the flattest wickets and a lot of drawn matches.

Would have happened if the team management wasn’t so harsh on him in away test matches despite Ashwin showing remarkable improvements.

Ideally should have retired as 2nd highest test wicket taker after Murali.

Could not have articulated it better, fc! have the exact thoughts/feelings 👍🏻

"Envy Him, Jealous Of Him": R Ashwin's Honest Admission About India Teammate

At 38, Ravichandran Ashwin's preparation for a “tough” long season ahead differs from what it used to be a decade ago, and the star spinner on Sunday admitted that it is now more about taking one match at a time than fitting the whole season in a single frame. Till June, 2025, India will play nine more Tests, including a possible World Test Championship (WTC) Final in vastly differing conditions. It motivates Ashwin to reinvent himself after each match and be ready for the next challenge.

"Like you rightly said, it's a long season. It's tough. Sometimes when you look so far ahead, it can be quite difficult. You're playing like 3-4 months of cricket, and 10 Test matches," Ashwin told reporters after the first Test against Bangladesh here.

"But sometimes you can't think like that. You have to stack it up (one match at a time). I did put in a bit of work getting into it. I need to have some reserves in the tank," he added.

The Chennaiite also wanted to use the breaks in between Tests or two series to keep himself in the optimum physical condition.

"There are good breaks between games. Hopefully, we'll get small windows for me to keep ironing it out (fitness). More than skill, I think it's about physically being able to go through the season which is of utmost importance for me," he noted.

Accordingly, Ashwin has tweaked his fitness routine as well.

"It's not the same as if you play 25, 26, 30 or even 35. 38 is different to 35. Every bit of work that you put, you have to put in doubly hard to earn the right to be there.

"So, I have reduced my strength training sessions. I work differently on mobility and other aspects of life. I do a bit of yoga. It's good," he explained.

However, the story of Ashwin remains incomplete without the mention of Ravindra Jadeja – his loyal Jean Passepartout in bowling and batting for over a decade now.

While Ashwin hogged the limelight for his all-round show – a hundred and six wickets in the Chepauk Test –Jadeja quietly supported him from the other end, bagging five wickets.

"He's been a very inspirational story. Many of these occasions over the last 3-4 years, when he's walked in to bat, I feel so calm and composed in the dressing room. It's such an inspirational story about how he's found his off-stump, how he's contributed," Ashwin began on his trusted partner.

The veteran off-spinner then went into detail the importance of Jadeja, the fielder.

"Jadeja on the field is a fire. He's a rocket on the field. So, all in all, I envy him. I'm jealous of him but totally admire him. I've learnt to admire him for the last 4-5 years, even more than I have in the past,” he said.

But has he ever competed with Jadeja, as it often happens between two contemporaries within the team or otherwise.

The cricket history is replete with such instances – Tendulkar-Lara, Wasim-Waqar, Muralitharan-Warne – of equals competing with each other to race ahead and forming a mutual admiration society along the way.

For Ashwin too, it's a brotherly contest, a healthy one to discover the better self of himself.

"Sometimes, when you're in the race along with your co-cricketers, you want to get ahead of one another, even inside a team. It's like brothers growing in arms, right? And then you slowly start admiring one another.

"Now, that admiration has gone one step higher, knowing that I can never beat Jadeja. So, I'm comfortable in my skin, but totally inspired by what he's done,” he added.

Ashwin also reserved a word of praise for Rishabh Pant, who made a hundred on his return to Test cricket for the first time since 2022.

"I don't think Rishabh's form or ability was ever going to be in question at all. I think the way he's come back and put himself on the field is quite miraculous. I don't think there was any pressure on him.

"He's entertaining. Not the greatest of sights for people sitting behind him to go into bat. I don't know when his turn will come. But yeah, I think he's only going to get better. He's always had the backing of the team,” he added.

While speaking on a local Indian media outlet, Tamim Iqbal hailed Ravi Ashwin:

“That was brilliant what he did, he was batting like a proper batter. I come from a different country. What I always hear is Virat Kohlis and Rohit Sharmas but Ravichandran Ashwin is equally important in my eyes. Because we only talk about when they do well, when they get the hundreds, they get five six wickets. But their contribution to this Indian team is immense. It’s as big as Rohit as big as Virat Kohli.”

About time i think Ashwin is considered among Top 50 greatest ever cricketers.

Who agrees?

He will be a strong contender because not many have done more for their teams.

You can start with how many better cricketers Asia has produced who have helped his team win matches against strong oppositions. Boosting stats against minnows does not count.

If he makes into top 15 comfortably then making into top 50 in world should be not hard.

Is he a top 10 in Bharat already according to you.

Yes, I think he is among the top 10 as cricketer in India for sure in the test format. Look at how many Man of the series he got , one more and he will be tied with Murali for the top spot in number of MOS.

MOS every 3rd series is phenomenal. Away avg of 30 and home avg of 21 , that's better than some one like Anderson and then you have 6 tons so far.
He was intrumental in winning series in Aus last time by contributing with his batting and bowling both.

Posters some time jump on very quickly about his higher average in Aus and SA. Well, Even great Murali had bad two venues by averaging 45 and 75 against Ind/Aus. Forget about spinner, Waqar as pacer has 40 and 70 plus average in two away venues.

Another things is he has taken tons of 5-fers agasint top 4 batting sides of his era. He has 26 5-fers against Aus, Eng, SA and NZ. To draw a contrast, Waqar has only 7 5-fers agsint the top 4 batting sides( Aus, SA, Ind, WI ) of his era.

So yes, he is not in Murali or Warne as spinner, but he will comfortably feature as the top 10 bowlers from Asia and then you add his batting, there is very strong argumetn to put Ashwin as top 10 cricketer in Asia let alone in India.

I know some one will ask how many 5-fers outside of Asia. I think it's too harsh. To flip the mirror, McGrath has grand total of just 1 fers in Asia in entire career.

So all players have flaws, question is how valuable they are for your country. If you are going to be MOS every 3rd series you play for you country, you come near the top for me as a cricketer.

India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed yet another Indian bowling record surpassing the legendary Anil Kumble. When Ashwin dismissed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto on the opening day of the 2nd Test in Kanpur, he became the bowler with the second-most Test wickets – 420 – in Asia overtaking Kumble who took 419 of his 619 scalps in the continent.

The record for the most Test wickets on Asian pitches belongs to the legendary Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan with 612 wickets while his compatriot Rangana Herath is fourth on this list with 354 scalps. Another spin great Harbhajan Singh completes the top five with 300 wickets.

Star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has created history on Monday (September 30) by becoming the first bowler in the world to dismiss at least 50 batters each in all three editions of the World Test Championship (WTC) played so far.

5 wickets in the 2nd test match against Bangladesh.

List of Records Broken By Ravichandran Ashwin In 2nd Test Against Bangladesh

Most wickets in India-Bangladesh Tests: Ashwin broke Zaheer Khan’s record to become the leading wicket-taker in Test matches played between India and Bangladesh. Zaheer dismissed 31 batters in seven matches, whereas Ashwin now has 34 wickets to his name in eight India-Bangladesh Tests.

Most wickets in WTC 2023-25: With 53 wickets to his name in 10 matches, Ashwin is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing 2023-25 edition of the World Test Championship. Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood is in 2nd place with 51 wickets in 11 matches.

1st bowler to take 50 wickets in all three WTC editions: By taking two wickets in the first innings of the second Test, Ashwin created history as he became the first bowler to take at least 50 wickets in all three editions of the World Test Championship played so far.

Most wickets for Indian bowler in Asia: The first wicket for Ashwin in the Kanpur Test helped him break Anil Kumble’s record of most wickets for India on Test matches played in Asia. Kumble dismissed 419 batters in Test matches played in Asia, whereas Ashwin has 424 wickets to his name.

Joint-most Player of the Series award In Tests: Ashwin was named as the best player of the India-Bangladesh Test series, which helped him equal Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan’s world record of winning the 11 Player of the Series award in Test cricket.

A poster was asking if he will be among the top 10 in india.

11 MOS in 39 test series. Murali played 60 series for that.

Ashwin is surely among the top 10 players produced by India. I would say it will be hard to name 10 better test cricketer in Asia, let alone in India. Winning MOS in every 2-3 series is just top class.

He deserved two more. But they gave it to someone else. Kohli once i think.

2016 England in India

Kohli made 655 runs - Won MOS
Ashwin took 30 wickets and made 306 runs

Considering most of the wickets in that series were flat, Ashwin should have been given the MOS. Everyone was scoring hundreds in that series. Jayant Yadav scored a hunderd, K Nair scored 300. It was a series where batters ruled the roost. India's at least scored 400 in one innings in every test with the last 2 Tests 631 and 759 respectively. Considering that 30 wickets by Ash was phenomenal.

He is definitely the best spin bowler from India after Kumble. But I think Ashwin's contributions are way more than Kumble's.
