[VIDEOS] Saud Shakeel should be included in the national team set-up as soon as possible

Saud has got to be the most aesthetically pleasing of our upcoming batsmen. It seems as if he is playing all these shots effortlessly.

Btw he has an opportunity to make a name for himself in next PSL. By the look of Quetta squad, 2 of Saud, Umer, Ahsan Ali & Danish Aziz will play every match. I don't think selectors will be able to ignore him if he performs in even half of these matches.

Beautiful clips, that boundary against Hafeez could be a teaching point for many, many great SENA (& WIN) lefti batsmen, whom Hafeez kept in pocket on similar wickets.

What little I have seen his batting so far (exhibited perfectly in this innings), he is a perfect foil for modern day ODI opener. His batting is based on touch, timing & placement, but backed by decent defensive techniques which is the key to opening in ODI. Most people think Power Play 10 overs are all about going over the top and bang every ball, but actually it's far from that. A 23 ball 35 is worthless in ODI game (may be useful in T20), because it doesn't contribute anything much towards 300 ish total - be batting first or chasing, doesn't matter. What ODI game needs is a big score from top 3, preferably from one of the openers with a decent SR - ideal stats for an ODI opener is like 40~45/90~85, with good conversion rate, in short what Indian opening pair is doing and what Tamim has done in last few years, Warner/Kok has done one level better at their peak.

That role can only be played through proper batting in Power Play - 1. good defense, shot selection & technique to survive the best bowlers early in innings, 2. great timing, placements and 360 degree shot making ability on either feet to cash on every loose ball, 3. all-round batting to handle every ball on merit to rotate strike - soft touches, timely awaited pushes in gaps (one reason Ahmed can't rotate because he times it too brilliantly - bulls eye to the fielder in ring) with batting intelligence to maneuver singles and keep score board moving even against 9 fielders inside inner ring.

This kid has every thing for those 3 points - obviously not finished product yet, but he has time in his side. Couple of years like Babar at early age under Arthur could have made him a truly world class batsman by now (he should have been in PAK squad from 2016, after A tour of UK). And, he is a decent part-time spinner, can't be worse fielder than some of the stalwarts playing for PAK for years, decades together (and few of them leading in recent time) and he looks fit, stocky and compact. Should be a better player on true, faster surface because of this timing and placements - among very few PAK players who actually has an off-side game on back foot.

One observation is, among lots of qualities, one thing this young man Saud doesn't have is that, he can't butcher balls with bottom hand, neither can slog swing to clear fielders at 65 metres with planted feet, just from power of fore arm. SO, befittingly and obviously, PCB & it's think tanks have forced him into exactly that role at No. 7. But then, why I am wondering - it's the batting culture .....

Yes good point.

This PSL could really give him a chance to propel himself.

Not too long ago...people were ga-ga over Hussain Talat...he's found to be limited and/or Hafeez and Malik wont budge.

And, now we have Saud as the next big thing.

In a set up where players like saad Ali, Usman Salahuddin get dropped without so much as someone batting an eye lid...what hope does Saud have?

He is Pakistan's third best batsman after Babar and Haris.
Should be in the test and odi team asap.

Btw is it only me who thinks he resembles a young Haris Sohail. The flicks, cover drives and lofted shots are almost similar even Haris had the same physique too.

I wrote this yesterday :p. Great minds...

Although I think Haris is better against pace.

Think Haris is taller isnt he?

Yes, Harris is better against pace but Saud is better against spin. Saud should play every ODI in UAE atleast.

His range of shots is superb, but he needs a run of matches at the PSL to raise his profile.

Also I've noticed that some of his coaches don't really give him a fair chance........sadly the story of Pakistan cricket if you haven't got sifarish.

Let's see if his PSL team utilises him properly.
Don't expect much from him if he doesn't get to bat in the top 3.

Unfortunately his PSL captain also believes in providing chances to his friends only. :shafiq :anwara

Continues to rot on the sidelines.

He may not be a success in international cricket but I'd sooner have invested in him during the UAE season against AUS and NZ instead of recalling Mohammad Hafeez for the 20th time.

We need to go back to basics in our selection policy and look at the numbers. More often than not, the players with proven domestic track records are able to translate that to international level.

We need to stop calling up players with average domestic records and somehow expect them to outperform their career output only this time at a much harder level.

This guy averages 52 at a SR of 85 in LA cricket. If he isn't called up to the ODI team it will be a disgrace.

because to often the selectors have failed to acknowledge the fact that looking good and being technically sound is one thing to judge by looking, but the ability to build big innings is always represented in averages.

Well there's the thing with Saud. He looks good at crease too.

Don’t posters learn their lessons on here from the past?

Couple of failures from him in the international scene, he will be dropped and forgotten and we will go back to the TTFs.

For him to succeed, you need a bold captain and selector, who will give him the backing even after a few failures.

Same happened with Umar Akmal.
He burst onto the scene with a century in test cricket and then if u look now he’s nowhere.
Same with Ahmad Shahzad.
I hope that doesn’t happen with Babar Azam.
However Babar has achieved more than what Umar and Ahmad achieved in their careers

Pakistan has also been very unfortunate to have a destructive Shahid Afridi and an unimaginative Misbah leading the side for most of last decade.

You need good captains to evolve good players.

Exactly,
Look at Virat Kohli he was a very good player but no one really imagined him to be THE best player in the world right now.
He worked on his game a lot. Take England 2014 for example, him failing there allowed him to make improvements. According to him he worked hours to fix them.
It’s about the commitment the player has to his game too.
Also. Pakistanis batsmen can’t handle pressure (same without SA batsmen in world events).
India has never really had a problem with that.

India has a problem with pressure just like them all if not even more than others, QF 15 World Cup, Final 17 CT, I can go on and on.

No, I mean against Pakistan (CT17 being an exception)
Even if they have pressure, they don’t let it overcome them.
Tbh, the way India beat Pakistan in those two matches was uncalled for. The difference between the two teams wasn’t as much as the results showed.

Is it just me or the bowlers bowling in this video are utterly attrocious?

Grade II cricket :)

I might be wrong so don't really quote me on this but I think that most of our domestic stars play in both Grade I and Grade II as the timing of the tournaments is totally different. Isn't that the case?

In the current Grade II tournament, Faisalabad and Karachi Blues have a bunch of top level FC players. The rest of the teams are relatively weak with lesser known players.

Top level FC players should not play Grade II cricket. It should be limited to lesser known and newbies.

Eagerly waiting for him to play for Pakistan. Good talent, we have very few young batsmen coming through.

So close to the national team but he has put in a bit of weight. He should take care of his fitness.

Hope he gets a chance in the PSL.

I hope NOT.

He is not a T20 player yet, and chances are high that they'll put him at 6-7 .... result is a failure with bat and your CS will get an excuse to keep him in A team for 4 more years. I didn't like Saad being picked either - had Badar not played in PSL last year, probably would have played for PAK A or PAK Emerging this season, and he is in good touch, could have made it count.

Time has come when PP starts to hype PSL less and watch a bit of BPL - I won't talk about the quality of cricket in front of Cricket elites here, but each and every team is playing 2-3 BD batsmen in top 4, though BPL's collection (International batsman) is better than PSL and 1 extra team means domestic talent is divided more.

Well obviously not at 6/7. :))

I would open with him but it's too much to ask for.

I hear he can't hit sixes. That seems to be the case with most of the Pakistani batsmen.

Saud Shakeel needs to bat at 3 or max 4 for QG in PSL.

A prolific PSL is needed to force Inzamam and Mickey to select him for Pak Odi's vs Australia and WC 2019 aswell.

He is the best possible replacement for Haris Sohail. Because he is fitter than Hary so it's an edge.

Drop Rizwan and Select Saud incase Haris doesn't get fit.

Saud should grab his chances at PSL with both hands. He is most pleasing on the eye batsman in Pakistan after Babar Azam.

TalentSpotterPk

We need guys like Sharjeel

Yes as an opener not middle order which has nothing of note besides Babar Azam.

Also Sharjeel is in worst possible shape at present (severely overweight). He will be back after September 2019 and no idea if he would be as Good as before or not.

TalentSpotterPk

I said guys like Sharjeel, not Sharjeel himself.

Need someone with Sharj's timing, power, stance and balance.

It's criminal that this guy hasn't made his debut yet. Should be batting at 4 or opener after the world cup. As MMHS said he game is suited at top of the order. Either him or babar needs to open.

He will never get a chance and we all know that.

Pakistan's cricket biggest issue has not been investing in proper batsman. Instead we invest in Malik (a failed bowler turned batsman), Hafeez (a chucker turned batsman), Azhar Ali (a leg spinner turned batsman) and Asad (mental midget).

Instead if we invested in proper batsman like Saud Shaeekl our life would be very different now.

Ideally he should be in the team over Malik

It's sad that we have to hope a T20 league will get a player into the national side. He would do better than Malik and Hafeez if he played at the WC.

I dont really like the crouch and bent elbow.
crouching means you cant handle steep bounce properly and bent elbow will never enable you play pull and hook well

He needs to work hard like Babar Azam and take him as an example. He has the ingredients to be a good batsman. He should be in the LOI team after the WC.

Sarfraz Bhaee meharbaani kero yaar !

Let Saud Shakeel play.

Saud deserved chance ahead of Danish Aziz.

He will be like another Fawad Alam. Unless you have link you will never get selected in the present system.

He will play in the Pakistan games. Calm down.

Hopefully according to loud mouth shehzad is better then hence he got picked. Or probably protecting his buddies as someone mentioned above.

Scored 52 today for Federal in 37 balls - decent knock

He is the real deal and should play once Hafeez and Malik are kicked out after the world cup

.

Class personified. His innings today was like watching a highlight's reel. His dismissal was completely against the run of play. 52 (37) silences those who say he bats too slow, but he needs big scores in this tournament if he wants to make a real impression.

Re short ball, he looked under control when pulling but needs to work on his hook shot (not for the first time he didn't look too comfortable against that shorter length).

Far too many dot balls. Needs to improve on that.

Saud faced only 13 dots out of 37 balls yesterday.

Of those, 12 were in the powerplay where he made 30 off 22.

After the powerplay, he faced 15 balls, one dot.

This is not 'far too many dots', in fact it's the opposite. He's doing great.

Damn it was whistling off his bat.... crazy timing. Fakhar off CT17 types.

Those shots through midwicket are the sign of a high class batsman. He has a great offside game as well, but I think I've only seen Babar play through the onside with such skill in recent times.

How old is he? Like Abid Ali, he just looks like a proper batsman, seems like our selectors only like pre-meditated sloggers who can hit spinners for six.

22 or 23. Don't worry he will be picked when he's in his 30s. Pathetic that he hasn't made his debut yet. Has been performing consistently in domestics.

If you want to debut at a young age then you have to be related to Inzi.

The PCB selection committee should be lined up and slapped in the face with custard pies.

Do whatever you want he won't be in the team till 2020 at the least.

Ony when Hafeez, Malik in ODI and Asad, Azhar in Tests are dropped/retired Saud's chances will come otherwise Inzi is not interested.

Overhyped.

If Imam Ul Haq's name was Saud Shakeel, the fans would be hyping him up even more.

I have seen some of your posts and your assessment most of the times is pretty good. I wonder why you dont post more in cricket section.
