[VIDEOS] Shubman Gill - Future Indian batting star

He has come of age. All format player. Scores big. In form of his life. Has like 7 tons in 2023 already. Plays elegantly. We're lucky to another elegant batter in the era of tullars everywhere. He has the potential to take the throne from Babar and sit on it for a long time. World-class Gill.

Lol Babar isn't in the same strosphere as Gill in terms of talent..

His potential is of an all time batsmen.

Lol well known classless player has classless fans. How is this surprising?

This will continue the more people start to put Gill on Sachins tier or call him the greatest indian batsmen.

Nowhere have I seen till date fans of Sachin go and abuse Kohli and his sister just because he is on the verge of breaking Sachin's record of most ODI centuries.

I meant Kohli's fans will spew more rubbish once Gill starts to get compared to Sachin and eclipses Kohli.

They're similar to Ronaldo fans and suffer from inferiority complex.

Babar is a Pakistani great, not an all time. Similar to Kane and Root.

All timers are some of the best to have ever played the game and Babar isn't near that level.

Fans are big on identifying baton-change moments in sport.

In his final Test innings just under a decade ago, when Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for the last time, in came Virat Kohli. Kohli began with a boundary first ball, and the whispers gained in volume at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai that the future is here, Tendulkar's successor is ready and able, the Kohli era has just begun.

Something similar happened last week when Shubman Gill's second successive IPL century for Gujarat Titans topped Kohli's second successive century for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Chinnaswamy Stadium audience, disappointed at the home side's defeat, however said with a knowing nod: the baton is being passed on, the future is ready, long live the king.

For so long has Gill been seen as the natural successor to Kohli that this was an easy one to hang a label on. Transitions are usually recognised only in hindsight, but here was an opportunity to see it happening before one's own eyes. Neither fans nor critics could resist the temptation. Gill will be 24 in a few days' time and is two years younger than Kohli was during the earlier baton passing. In sport, we love inevitabilities just as much as we enjoy surprises.

Some players are picked for big things at a very young age. When Gill was 15, he made 351 in an under-16 match; for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant (Under-16) tournament, he began with a double century.

When he was named India's Under-19 vice captain for the 2018 World Cup, it came as no surprise. He had already made his Ranji Trophy [India's main domestic tournament] debut for Punjab. And when he hit an unbeaten 102 against Pakistan in the semi-final, everything seemed to be going to plan. He emerged as player of the tournament.

Gill has been enjoying an incredible 2023, becoming the youngest double centurion in one-day internationals, India's highest centurion in T20 internationals and now scoring back-to-back centuries in the IPL (His team, Gujarat Titans, was defeated by Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday. They will have another shot at the final when they play a qualifier later this week).

India like their best batsmen to be all-format players. It is an old bias that T20 hasn't been able to erase. At 20, Gill took on Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon, in a chase that saw him make 91 and take India to a Test win in Brisbane.

His natural sense of timing, instinctive understanding of where the fielders are and ability to play between any two of them are hallmarks of a very special player. With the confidence that comes from having run up big scores in all formats, he knows that he belongs. And he should, for another decade and more while the Indian team undergoes the inevitable transition.

There might be something of the young Dilip Vengsarkar in his batting, but Gill is not your typical Indian batsman, all wristy flair and mischief. Like the greats of the past, he is a backfoot batter, pulling to leg and stroking to the off in unexpected ways.

It all looks effortless because the power is married to aestheticism, and there isn't an extra note in the composition. For a predominantly bottom-handed player who loves to play the pull, he can drive like the best of them on either side of the wicket. And even the pull comes with a wide range. The ball can finish anywhere from the right of square leg to the left of mid-on.

Above all, there is a calmness and control about Gill's batting that communicates itself to those watching including the bowler, who is often as much a spectator as the man in the stands. You can only pray for bowlers when you realise that he has not yet peaked as a batter and will become even more of a force.

If missing matches for India - through injury or shortage of runs - has taught him one thing it is to bat as long and as productively as possible. In any case, that is something he enjoys.

White ball cricket has taught Gill to be innovative and score at a gallop. In 15 Tests he averages just under 35, which for a batter of his gifts is well below par. The World Test Championship final next month in England might be the platform which launches him towards the statistical towers of a Tendulkar or Kohli. He owes it as much to himself as to a billion fans who like to draw a straight line from one batsman of a generation to the next.

Gill hits his third century in four innings in IPL 2023!

The new King, for sure. Some other supposed kings just cannot play an innings of this quality. He's very very good!

Formers Kaptaan's crown was illegitimate in first place.

And we don't need kings. That implies others are there to serve him.

We need soldiers. Gill is coming along nicely.

Richards was also called King. Doesn't mean others are his servants. It just means he is top of the cricketing world.

Can’t wait for India v Pakistan now

Gill is going to humble Shaheen “SochnaBhiManaHai” whenever it happens

Yes well spoken as a Pakistan supporter - who needs enemies?

I don’t like arrogance/overconfidence and thinking your a superstar before you really are one. Don’t care if it’s a Pakistani player or from anywhere

What a talent.

What a player.

On track to be the world's best in future.

The 129-run knock by Shubman Gill is the second most by an Indian batter in an @IPL game (KL Rahul 132* for PBKS vs RCB in 2020) and the most by a batter in an IPL PlayOffs game.

Need to show up in WTC final first
People forget IPL performances

This..

You need to show up when it matters the most. Gill got probably close to a dozen hundreds in the past 7-8 months but still the 91 he got at Gabba 2021 remains his pinnacle knock.

Whole series he was good. 91 was icing on the cake. He turned what would have turned into a draw into a match iwnning one. Pujara was like 8 runs in 70 or 80 balls. If Gill had batted like that India would have lsot for sure.

KL Rahul was supposed to overtake the King! :virat

Unfortunately his mental game is not upto the mark. He did have the talent but turned out to be extremely weak on his mind. But then he is now part of the mafia setup (BCCi, corporate sponsors, senior players) to play in the Indian team no matter what.

KL Rahul was supposed to overtake the King! :virat

The IPL boss KL Rahul keeping Gill out for a while was probably a lame effort by the Jay Shah conglomerate as a punishment for Gill's support for the farmer's protest.

But even the Modi lot aren't that powerful enough to keep such a star down for too long :apology

Let's see what he does at the WTC.

Why does this sound like you're waiting for him to fail?

Hope it has nothing to do with this

Because that would be silly. That's like trying to reduce Gambhir or Jadeja's cricketing achievements because of their association with the BJP or even Sachin's cricketing stature because he speaks the government's language.

In the midst of a golden run, Shubman Gill feels working on specific technical areas and a minor tweak before a T20 series in New Zealand post the T20 World Cup in Australia, has worked wonders for his game. For the record, Gill wasn't picked for the global event in 2022 as the Rahul Dravid coached team went with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli as its Nos 1, 2 and 3 in the batting line-up. Gill, who has been panned for his strike-rate during earlier editions of IPL, has confirmed an 'Orange Cap' with 851 runs and three hundreds in the 16th edition, which has taken Gujarat Titans to its second successive IPL final.

On Friday, Gill sent Mumbai Indians bowling attack on a leather-hunt, hitting 129 off 60 balls as Titans comfortably won the second Qualifier by 62 runs.

"From the last West Indies tour (2022), I think I have shifted a gear, I got injured before the last IPL but I have been working on my game. I have worked on a few areas and made technical changes ahead of the NZ series after the T20 World Cup," he said at the post-match presentation.

Three hundreds in a single IPL edition is only second to Virat Kohli's four in the year 2016 when RCB last played the finals. The former skipper had scored 973 runs, which is still a record.

"I think this was probably my best innings so far in the IPL," the 23-year-old Punjab man said.

Asked how he deals with the expectations, Gill said: "Expectations are something that follow you outside the ropes, but once you step on the field it is all about trying how to contribute for the team." Gill said starting well is the key for him to score big.

"For me, it is playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That's when I realised it could be my day.

"It was a good wicket to bat on as well. Not a conscious decision, you keep inventing as a batter but for me the belief is more important. I am coming off a good international season as well. Had a good season last time as well. When I start well, I feel confident I can score well."

Seems to have found a fifth and sixth gear which differentiates him from the other top platform setters like Kohli and Babar.

Your pathetic political hatred has reduced you to the level of trolling.

Could argue he's already the best ODI batsmen in the world.

He is a great talent. And that's about it.

He has to prove himself by scoring runs across formats and across different conditions around the world to be considered among the greats.

But i have great hope..And that's because he works hard to improve himself.

He was scoring 400-500 runs in the IPL for last few seasons. But his SR was not great.

He went to work with perhaps the best powerhitter in India and worked with him and his father. Result is that now he scores at a SR of 200.

Now let's see how he adjusts to the test format.

Gujarat Titans star opener Shubman Gill is the talk of the town as the young batter is in red hot form. Gill is the top run scorer of IPL 2023 and Orange Cap holder this season, and has smashed three centuries. With 851 runs in 16 matches, Shubman is currently averaging a whopping 60.79.

The 23-year-old is the IPL's third-highest run-getter in a season. Royal Challengers Bangalore star Virat Kohli tops the list with 973 runs in 16 matches that came in the 2016 season. He is just 13 runs away to move into second place and surpass Butter in the top run-getters list.

If Gill manages to score 123 runs in the final showdown of the IPL 2023, he will break Virat Kohli's record of 973 runs scored in a season.

Could argue he's already the best ODI batsmen in the world.
Based on what? :))

Wasn’t this Suryakumar supposed to be the next big thing too until he fizzled out?

Gill has amazing temperament and hunger to score runs, but he is yet to be tested abroad. If he does really well against one of the best bowling line-ups in the world starting June 7, then yes he will definitely get his stock up.

He is a better white ball batsman than Babar for sure

Soon he will overtake him in Test cricket too

SKy didn't fizzle out in T20. He is still no.1 in the world literally and rankingwise. Only in ODIs he failed. Besides his 91 at the Gabba and counter attack against Starc is the reason why India won the test. In Tests starc vs Gill 140 balls 130 runs 0 wicket.

To be the best, you would have to do a lot more than an individual innings of 91. He is a supreme talent, no doubt, but he needs to do more to be called the best ODI batsman in the world.

Obviously he has to do the yards like all the other Indian greats did in the past. In curernt situation ODI is his best format. I will be surprised if he doesn't get there. I never remotely expected him to be a half decent T20 batsman. In one year he has completely transformed himself. Next gen players hit a lot of sixes. Ruturaj is another guy. Gill has joined him.

SKY plays an extremely high risk game. Achieving consistency in T20 with this approach is phenomenal. Occasionaly poor run is inevitable. But it undeniable he is one of the few guys in world cricket who take T20 to next level. The same old classical innings building in T20 is a thing of past. Gone are the days where one batsman bats on a good track entire 20 overs scoring at 150 which is pretty much useless. Teams gain more from 3 or 4 cameos instead. That is where guys like Sky, Harry Brook, Klaasen, Pooran come into picture.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 done and dusted, the focus now shifts towards the longest format of the game as India take on Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. With KL Rahul out injured, the responsibility will be on Shubman Gill to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels Gill has a bit of class and swagger in his stroke making, adding that the 23-year-old will play an important role in the WTC final.

"He looks like a terrific young guy. He's got that bit of attitude about him as well. He's got a bit of swagger. He has some serious class. That sort of front foot pull shot that he plays against the fast bowlers will be a shot that he'll probably need against this Australian attack," Ponting said on ICC Review.

Gill was in stunning form during IPL 2023 as he won the Orange Cap. However, he could not take defending champions Gujarat Titans to their second successive title but he will be hoping to win his first major trophy in Indian colours next week.

Ponting also hailed India's Mohammed Shami, saying that the veteran pacer can prove to be dangerous, something which the Australians have already acknowledged.

"I think he has to step up or try and take his game to another level if India are going to win this game. When you talk to the Australian batters as well, they understand how good Shami is whether it's new ball or old ball, whether it's in Australia or India. They know the skillset he's got and how dangerous he can be. It's going to have to be him," he added.

The WTC final will be play at the Oval in London from June 7-11.

For a batter, there's nothing like getting praise from a bowler, especially if that bowler is the legendary Wasim Akram. As the Indian cricketing fraternity is going ga-ga over the consistent performances of Shubman Gill, Akram joined the bandwagon in hailing the Indian opening batter for his exemplary form. Though there are those who don't want Gill to be compared with Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar yet, Akram found similarities between the Prince and the God from the perspective of a bowler.

In a chat on Sportskeeda, Akram said that the bowlers who are bowling to Gill at present would get the same feeling he got while bowling to Tendulkar during his active days. Akram feels Gill wouldn't just be a superstar of Indian cricket in the coming days but will be will rule cricketing charts all over the globe.

"When I bowl to a player like Gill, even in T20 format, it's like I am bowling to Sachin Tendulkar in one-day cricket in the first 10 overs, when only two fielders were allowed (outside the 30-yard circle)," said the legendary Pakistani cricketer.

"If I had to bowl to Jayasuriya or Kaluwitharna, I knew I had a chance. I can get them out as they hit on every ball. But, players like Sachin and Gill, they play proper cricketing shots. I think he is the kind of player who can score in all three formats consistently. He is a future superstar of world cricket.

This is Gill's ability, talent and hard work. Such a shame what has happened with Prithvi Shaw so far. He was propped up even more than Gill during his junior days to shine in the international arena. I'm extremely happy with Gill's progress so far, but equally disappointed with Shaw.

Emerging India star Shubman Gill knows he will need to be at the top of his game if he is able to replicate his form at the Indian Premier League during the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia.

Gill was in scintillating touch for the Gujarat Titans at the IPL this year, with the right-hander smashing three centuries to be the tournament's leading run-scorer with 890 runs at an average just shy of 60.

That breakout IPL season comes on the back of his record-breaking ODI double-century against New Zealand in January and Gill is emerging as the new face of India cricket in all three formats.

Gill's focus is currently on helping India go one step further than in 2021 and claim a first World Test Championship Final at The Oval this week and the confident young batter knows he has to move on from the highs and lows of the IPL and adapt quickly to playing in the neutral English conditions.

"It does give you a bit of confidence (from the IPL), but I feel this is a completely different scenario and a completely different game," Gill told the ICC at The Oval on Sunday.

"But that's the fun about it. Last week we were playing something completely different with a different atmosphere and that is the challenge and that is what is exciting about Test cricket."

Exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage of India's training session ahead of the all-important ICC World Test Championship 2023 Final
Gill was part of India's side that lost the inaugural World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, with the stylish batter managing scores of just 28 and eight as the Black Caps registered an eight-wicket triumph in Southampton.

India have the chance to gain some redemption for that loss in London this week and Gill said his side had learnt plenty from the disappointing defeat against the Kiwis.

"We have been talking about some of the things we have learnt as a team and especially as a batting group from playing that match," he said.

"Hopefully we will be able to overcome the mistakes we made last time."

Experienced No.3 Cheteshwar Pujara looms as a key piece of the puzzle for India this week and the veteran believes his side is extremely well prepared for the contest.

While many of his teammates were away at the IPL with their respective teams, Pujara was busy acclimatising with yet another spell with Sussex in the second division of England's County Championship.

Pujara managed to score three centuries while amassing 545 from eight innings during his stint and the 35-year-old expects to be able to translate that form into the clash against Australia.

"We have had very good preparation so hopefully this time we will cross the line," Pujara told the ICC.

"Most of the guys have played enough cricket here and some of them have played County cricket too.

"And you need that experience...we know each other’s strengths and we have played a lot of cricket against Australia as well so we know what to expect from the opposition team."

Gill has a long way to go. Too much hype. Too much.

He was hyped way back by almost all players including Kohli with a good reason. Ian Bishop and Simon Doull went gaga over him even in under-19 days. It was only a matter of time. I am surprised he started clicking a little later. Obviously, he looks better than he was 2 years back. He was not a six-hitter like he is now. If a player looks better than he was before then that means progress, that means he works hard. Prithvi Shaw had more hype. But his game is exactly the same as it was 2 or 3 years back.

I think he will struggle in India more given his spin weakness. He should do better overseas. His big challenge will be switching between formats seamlessly. Only Kohli has done it impeccably. That is mostly because he plays pretty much the same way in all formats. Almost everything is ground shot. Another thing is i still don't believe he is an opener. He will server better as a MO batsman. All great batsmen are middle order. Lara/Ponter/Tendulkar/Kohli. Openers can often succumb against new ball from time to time.

Gill plays besides the line..So i will reserve my judgement on his skills to tackle the moving ball.

Actually Yashasvi has a better technique and should open while Gill plays at 3 or 5.

Yes Jaiswal is a proper opener with great leaving technique. Even in under-19 he left the balls well. Batsmen like Gill with new ball threat gone can absolutely dominate the bowling. I have rarely seen Gill leaving the ball. Like all stroke players he likes to feel the ball most of the time.

I can almost imagine his dismissal at oval in advance. He will take halfstep to middle stump and hang his bat on off stump. A ball from boland or Cummins will seam out and take the edge to slip.

Hope I'm wrong and he scores a first inning daddy hundred.

Gill will learn from experience but think this a brilliant delivery

As per Cricviz this was one of the most threatening deliveries bowled by an Aussie in England.

Any player who focuses more on LOIs will have to go through the struggles before they start performing in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli was chasing totals for fun in his relatively earlier age in 2012 and 2013 in ODIs but in Test cricket, he was struggling overseas before he finally found the confidence on the flat tracks in 2015 tours of Australia.

Gill will be the world’s greatest batsman in years to come. He is already better than Babar, Marnus and everyone else that are part of the new generation after the Fab Four.

But he is not a Test opener. Opening with Gill is no different to opening with Kohli or Babar or Root. It will not bring the best out of them.

India have been forced to open with him because there is no room in the middle-order and he is too good to be sitting on the bench.

In the long-term, he needs to bat at 4 but as long as Kohli is there, they need to find a way to accommodate him at 5.

Gill is a 50+ averaging player, but opening with him means you are restricting his average to 39-40 which is well below his ability.

Gill absolutely set the tone for India’s thumping win today.

He was on 41 at a point while The Hitman was on just 10. He smashed Afridi and Naseem and burst that psychological aura of the so called pace attack of PCT.

Rohit, Kohli and Rahul all picked up momentum from Gill’s onslaught.

With the World Cup match just approaching, this aura breaker from Gill makes a massive impact for India going into that 1.5 lac capacity giant of a stadium.

Kudos to him.

What I liked about Gill was that he was humble coming into this game. After he had a really bad first game, he praised Babar's batting and our bowling line up. He did not make any excuses (like Sreesanth did). He just regrouped, came back with a plan, and executed it perfectly.

Our guys can learn from this and come back strong against Lanka

India's best batsman and possibly a top 3 player in the world is pant
He is injures. When he comes back, indian batting would be difficult to handle

Gill just needs 14 runs to become the fastest to score 2000 runs in ODIs. currently Amla holds the record by reaching the milestone in 40 innings. Gill has reached 1986 in just 37 innings. But what is insane is he has done this with an avg of 64.04 and s/r of 102.90.
