[VIDEOS] Shubman Gill - Future Indian batting star

Disastrous. This guy is a T20 hack and a bad one at that. How is he even considered for test matches?

Because of his performance in domestic cricket. That’s how players are selected for international cricket.

Support the selection of Gill over Rahul.

Rahul is not a Test opener. He is a T20 opener and in ODI's, he should bat in the middle order. Actually Rahul should not open at all in all formats.

The only way Rahul can secure a spot is if he decides to keep wickets. Rahul is a better batsman than Pant and can be more useful like a Matt Prior batting down the order.

Gill should look to cement his place in this series. He and Shaw should be carrying the team once Kohli/Pujara are gone.

MSK Prasad's brain should be studied by scientists, I would really like to know what logic there is in not picking him for SA or WI LoI series where he can actually make a case of starting over other tried and failed players but nope, we will pick him for a test squad where he has no chance of selection unless kohli has one of his usual brain farts while selecting the team.

I don't think continuously calling him a hack with nothing to back it up makes it true, just makes you a hater.

He has more of a chance in Test team than ODI team. He's not going to replace Rohit Sharma or Shikhar Dhawan anytime soon. They're still going strong. It's our Test openers who have been a bit of a worry.

About time Gill got in the test team.

He he has piled on the runs in Ranji.

I think he has a better shot as an opener than Rohit.

Dhawan isn't going to be opening in 2023, he could slot in the middle until dhawan self destructs during jamodis as usual. This is typical lack of foresight which is par for course with this lot, who will rather play a 34 yr jadhav old than a youngster.

More sense.

I've serious doubts over Rohit playing next WC. May be he'll play due to garbage we've masquerading as team think tank but don't he'll have any gas left 3.5 years from now.

1. There are better options than Gill in the middle order. Such as those that are actually playing in the middle order for India 'A'.
2. Switching positions can screw up a player. He has said before that he prefers opening and has scored all his runs at that position. If he is to be played at 4, he will spend years trying to get used to his new role. Then when the opening slot is finally open, who knows if he's even good at that position anymore?

If Dhawan truly has a shelf life of another 1-2 years, I don't see the issue with Gill continuing to opening the batting in List 'A' for Punjab and India 'A' till then. He'll be 22 in 2 years' time with 2 years still left for the World Cup. He's still not the finished product for ODIs and cannot displace Dhawan right now as we saw against South Africa 'A' recently where he dominated the bowlers in a series where Gill couldn't do well, so it's better to prime Gill by having him open for India 'A'. And who knows? We might even see another opener for ODIs emerge within that time. There are other openers like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Anmolpreet Singh too that are doing well in 50-over cricket.

I wasn't saying no 4, that needs a proper middle order batsman, but more in the no 5 or 6 role, wherein the pressure isn't much and he can then be eased into, if kohli and co remain incharge of indian cricket then i shudder to think what will happen to talented youngsters especially in roles like openers as they seem to be running the team especially the odi unit as if it's a sales division of some company, you are in or out of the team depending on how you played the last game. That is not how you build a team.

I would rather we gave youngsters an opportunity in that role rather than wasting time on likes of jadhav.

Shubman Gill shone again with a fine 92 as India A reached 233 for three by the end of first day’s play in the second unofficial Test against South Africa A here on Tuesday.

Opener Gill struck 12 fours and a six before getting out eight runs short of a century. This is the second time he has missed out on the three-figure mark, having scored 90 in the first match at Thiruvananthapuram.

The out-of-favour Karun Nair was batting on 78 and skipper Wriddhiman Saha was on 36 at stumps, which was called after 74 overs due to bad light.

Sent in to bat by the visiting captain Aiden Markram, India A didn’t enjoy the best of starts with Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran (5) falling leg-before wicket to Lungi Ngidi in the sixth over.

Gujarat batsman Priyank Panchal, a prolific scorer in the domestic circuit like Easwaran, batted for 39 balls before getting dismissed to leave India A at 31 for two.

The South African attack, which included Vernon Philander -- who got some game time ahead of the first Test against at Visakhapatnam -- Ngidi, Luthu Sipamla and Wiaan Mulder, bowled with a lot of discipline and did not offer the rival batsmen any easy scoring opportunities.

Gill, who was joined by Nair, got a move on as the two played some good shots. They added 35 runs in less than 10 overs before the lunch break.

The Punjab right-hander showed impressive technique in dealing with the pacers and spinner Dane Piedt, who had done well in the first match at Thiruvananthapuram.

He played some lovely shots on both sides and in Nair’s company, added 135 runs for the third wicket in 34 overs.

Gill looked to be on course for a ton, after having missed out in Thiruvananthapuram, but gave a catch to Senuran Muthusamy off Sipamla.

Nair, on his part, played some beautiful shots and was unbeaten when bad light brought about an early end to the day’s play.

The Karnataka batsmen has so far added 67 runs with Saha for the fourth wicket.

Philander bowled steadily but couldn’t pick up a wicket while Ngidi (1/41), Mulder (1/19) and Sipamla (1/54) got a scalp each.

The India A team made a few changes with Saha coming in for K S Bharat and Kuldeep Yadav, who is in the squad for the Tests against South Africa replacing K Gowtham. Umesh Yadav, too, was brought into the playing XI in place of Shardul Thakur.

He is gonna keep knocking on the door , lets see how long Kohli ignores him.

He is doing well but not getting chances.
He is on bench in current SA tour.
Hope he will get a chance in final test

This kid hasn’t even debuted and been giving interviews like some rockstar..

Talk about brainwashing of SC fans..

Well he does have some incredible domestic numbers, however, international cricket is different ball game altogether, hope to see him in 3rd test

Shubman Gill went past Virat Kohli to become the youngest-known captain to lead a side in Deodhar Trophy final.

Shubman Gill, who is captaining India C in the Deodhar Trophy, broke Virat Kohli's 10-year old record as he led his side in the final of the domestic tournament. Shubman Gill, 20-year-old, became the youngest-known captain to lead a side in the finals of Deodhar Trophy. India skipper, Virat Kohli, had captained North Zone in the final back in the 2009-10 season at the age of 21. Though it was a special occasion for the youngster, Gill could not contribute much with the bat in the summit clash against India B as he edged one straight to Yashasvi Jaiswal off Mohammed Siraj's bowling in the second over.

Virat Kohli's state mate Unmukt Chand is third on the list as he was the captain at the age of 22 when he led India B in the final of Deodhar Trophy in 2015.

In 2009, Virat Kohli led his side to a comfortable victory as North Zone defeated West Zone to clinch the coveted trophy.

Shubman Gill started the tournament with an impressive knock of 143 against India A on Friday but could only manage a couple of runs in his next two outings in the domestic tournament.
In the match, Kedar Jadhav and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored fifties to help India B post 283 for seven on the board. Chasing 284 for the win, India C lost five wickets inside 18 overs and needed 167 runs in 24 hours at the time of writing.

Ishan Porel was the star with the ball for India C who claimed a five-wicket haul for the second time in List A cricket.

Who does this kid think he is. He hasn’t even made a name for him at the big stage yet and he’s abusing umpires after they’ve given him out. These players shouldn’t be given so much money at such a young age in IPL they already think they are kohlis and Sharmas. Even kohli doesn’t do this and he is at the top of the world disgusting from shubhman Gill even if the umpire gave a wrong decision you should never abuse him this is a gentleman’s game for a reason.

Talented India batsman Shubman Gill, playing for Punjab, hogged all the limelight in the Ranji Trophy on Friday for all the wrong reasons as he allegedly "abused" the umpire after being given out and refused to walk off the field during their match against Delhi at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Shubman refused to walk off after being adjudged out by Mohamad Rafi and walked up to the umpire and had a heated discussion with him. Following this, the umpire overturned his decision.

The decision to overturn the wicket, however, did not go down well with the Delhi team and it was reported that they walked off the field and play was halted. Match Referee P. Ranganathan had to intervene and after a brief stoppage, play was resumed.

The 20-year-old Punjab opener was eventually dismissed by Simarjeet Singh. Shubman, after scoring 23 runs of 41 balls, was caught by Anuj Rawat.

Delhi and District Cricket Association secretary Vinod Tihara made it clear that the matter ended there and there was no question of bringing the matter up with the match referee.

"No, the team will not lodge any complaint with the match referee as we believe that the matter ended then and there. The boys just wanted clarity on why the decision was reversed and that was all there is to the matter. No question of stretching the matter and honestly, there was no walk-off either. It was just about getting a clear picture as to what happened," he told IANS.

At stumps on Day 1, Punjab ended on 266/8 riding skipper Mandeep Singh's 81 and Gurkreerat Mann's 65. For Delhi, who missed the experience of Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma, Kunwar Bidhuri took three wickets.

Elsewhere, Mumbai's travails continued as they were skittled out for 194 against Karnataka. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 77 as the rest of the batsmen including India's Test vice captain Ajinkya Rahane (7) and Prithvi Shaw (29) failed.

Shaw survived an injury scare in an attempt to stop an overthrow, as he hurt his left shoulder and walked off the field. Karnataka were 79/3 at stumps with R Samarth (40 batting) and captain Karun Nair (0 batting) at the crease.

For Mumbai, SZ Mulani got both Karnataka openers in the 20th over of the innings, his fifth and looked good at the end of the day's play.

Meanwhile, for Assam, 18-year old Riyan Parag hit a maiden first-class century, an unbeaten 104 off 219 balls -- his first hundred in senior representative cricket -- holding his team together against Uttarakhand. Assam were 237/5 at stumps in the Group C tie.

India Test batsman Hanuma Vihari got out for a duck, lasting just four balls, before being caught behind off Rituraj Singh, who struck twice in his third over as Andhra were reduced to 61/2 and finished on 82/2 after dismissing Rajasthan for a paltry 151.

Krunal Pandya-led Baroda scored 204 riding Deepak Hooda's 86 and then Railways were 24/2 at close of play.

Kerala were tottering at 126/7 against Hyderabad while Himachal were bowled out for 175 by Madhya Pradesh who were on 87/4 at stumps on Day 1.

Maharashtra were all out for a shocking 44 against Services who were 141/4 at stumps as the Bengal and Gujarat players stayed indoors due to rain in Kolkata where not a ball was bowled.

Tripura and Odisha also met the same fate as did Chhattisgarh and Haryana in Raipur. In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu was also washed out.

strange. Ive listened to many of his interviews and he seems like a down to earth kid. I guess maturity is not yet fully ripe.

Looks like he is developing some sort of attitude problem.

He needs punishment for the incident even if Delhi and umpires didn't press charges.

Legendary India cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi on Saturday tore into Shubman Gill for having an argument with the on-field umpire and eventually forcing him to overturn a decision in a Ranji trophy match against Delhi at Mohali on Friday. Bedi termed Gill’s behaviour as ‘rowdy’ and ‘unpardonable.’

“This kind of rowdy behaviour by anyone is unpardonable-least o all by proposed Capt of India A,” tweeted Bedi when asked by a senior journalist to react on the incident.

On Friday, Gill refused to leave the crease after he was adjudged caught-behind by slow-medium bowler Subodh Bhati. An argument with the umpire followed and the batsman was reinstated after a discussion between the on-field officials.

Gill was batting on 10 then. He didn’t last long as he edged one off Simarjeet Singh to Anuj Rawat for 23 off 41 balls with the team’s score on 60.

Bedi also hinted that Gill should be removed from captaincy of India A till the match referee takes an official “Let a more balanced person lead India A before the referee’s intimidated to decision on it,” Bedi’s tweet read.

Gill has been named the captain of India A for the limited overs leg of the New Zealand tour later this month. “No matter how talented no player was ever bigger than the game-example needs setting,” Bedi added.

Showing dissent to the umpire’s decision is a breach of the ‘Code of Conduct’ and there is a possibility that match referee P Ranganathan will have a word with the player. He could either be let off with a warning or charged with a Level 1 offence.

Gill’s argument with the umpire had also caused a stoppage in play for at least 10 minutes.

What is with this 2018 batch. Everyone gets into some sort of trouble. A cursed under 19 batch for sure.

About the news, They should keep him grounded. We don't want pre madonnas who get carried away by fame. First and foremost you should respect the game.

Talented Punjab batsman Shubhman Gill will be spoken to by a member of the Selection Committee following his on-field heated altercation with umpire Mohammad Rafi during the Ranji Trophy match against Delhi at Mohali on Friday. Gill had protested at being given out “caught-behind”, a decision which the umpire revoked after consulting his partner Pashchim Pathak.

Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, always a promoter of maintaining the traditions of the game, remarked on twitter, “This kind of rowdy behaviour by anyone is unpardonable - least of all by proposed captain of India `A’ - no matter how talented, no player was ever bigger than the game – example needs setting – let a more balanced person lead India 'A’ before the referee’s intimidated too!,” he wrote.

Bedi recalled how once Bapu Nadkarni stood his ground after being given out. “Bapu got into an argument with the bowler and not the umpire. Our captain (Tiger Pataudi) would have none of it and told Bapu to immediately return to the dressing room. Bapu was told by him never to stand at the wicket after being given out. Such was the respect for the umpires.”

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar had once commented against the umpire (V.N. Kulkarni) during a Bombay-Maharashtra Ranji Trophy match and was sent off for a session. Many years later Manjrekar, acknowledging his poor act, apologised to Kulkarni in his autobiography.

Former international umpire K. Hariharan wanted the Board to back the umpire. “Mistakes will happen. There is nothing wrong in revoking a decision if it is done instantly. Not after the player had protested. But the Board must stand by the umpire and in the process give a strong message to the players that such poor behaviour would not be tolerated,” Hariharan said.

he is a good player but learn to respect others. Fame shouldn't get to his head. His parents needs to whip him into reality. keephim grounded.

What on earth was the umpire doing overturning his own decision just because this lad threw his toys out of the pram.

Not good signs from Gill. Hope this attitude isn't the norm and he improves his behaviour.

True. I wonder how he could let it slip. Fighting with Umpire is always a losing battle.

I wasn't saying no 4, that needs a proper middle order batsman, but more in the no 5 or 6 role, wherein the pressure isn't much and he can then be eased into

You don't send an opener to play at No. 5/6. This isn't 2003. You need players who fit that position and Gill doesn't. If you think No. 5/6 doesn't have pressure then you're living in the past. We need specialist finishers in that position. The next Dhoni/Raina. Not someone who's just there so he can ease into international cricket and play as an opener when the position opens up.

Not a fan of Manish Pandey but I'd rather him play at 5 than Shubman Gill. At least he's been playing at that position for years now.

He will learn from this experience - has all the talent in the world, now needs a good temperament to go with it.

I have no doubt he is a good person as well. A bit vain but he has his mind set on becoming one of the best.

I'm guessing the umpire has got a few questions to answer too regarding this matter.

Gill needs to keep himself grounded.

It was unacceptable that the umpire changed his original decision.

Not excusing Gill's bad behavior with umpire one bit, but I think frustration of being continually ignored by muppets who select Indian team is finally getting to him...This gets accentuated especially when he sees the pretenders who are being selected instead...

He was incorrectly given out by the same umpire in the 2nd innings of the same game. This time Gill had only a wry smile to offer.

Plenty of people feel wronged everyday. Doesn't mean you go around having tantrums.

I agree and as I've said this doesn't excuse his bad behaviour with umpire but poor from our jokers as well not to pick for more than an year now!

Shubman Gill has been fined 100 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent against an on-field umpire decision during the Ranji Trophy match between Punjab and Delhi in Mohali last week.

Senior Delhi batsmen Dhruv Shorey was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for violating the BCCI’s code of conduct with “gross misbehavior” during the fourth-round fixture.

Controversy erupted in the first hour of the match with India player Gill getting involved in a heated argument with on-field umpire Mohamed Rafi after being given out.

Rafi later overturned the decision after consultation with the leg umpire Pashchim Pathak only to leave the Delhi team visibly unhappy, with Shorey threatening to walk out, leading to play being halted for a brief while.

“We have been informed by the Match Referee P Ranganathan of your gross misbehaviour on the field of play in the captioned match,” BCCI general manager, cricket operations, Saba Karim said in a letter to the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).

“You have violated BCCI code of conduct for showing contrary to the spirit of the game during the match for which you have been fined 50 percent of your match fees,” he said in the letter.

In the second innings of the same match, Gill again showed displeasure while protesting a caught-behind decision from the same umpire.

Yeah, what else does he need to do to be part of India senior team where we have batsman like Manish Pandey are being played? Or where Thakur is being played for his batting capabilities rather than his bowling....

Our team selection is completely shot under Kohli.....

Don't forget the greatest all-rounder Kedhar Jadhav.

Does our team management seriously 'think' that Gill isn't qualified enough to be part of 'this' Indian batting lineup? Do they think our current batting lineup is so invincible that someone like Gill isn't able to make it despite raking in so many good scores during last year or so?

Or Yuvraj's clone, Shivam Dube.....

The Shivam guy is horribly found wanting against short pitch stuff and don't know why he is touted as the one the "big things" - agreed even raina was given a long rope but those days India did not have many options unlike today. He may have played some useful innings at domestic level or in IPL but if he does not perform in the next two outings he should be dropped for good. He is not even on the level of robin singh who gave 100% each time, with his limited skills.

I think Indian TM considers him as a top-order player. Hence, not as a replacement for Manish Pandey.

Raina would be livid with him being mentioned in the same sentence as this Shivam "can't bat, can't field, can't bowl" Dube!

:)
even raina was not that great from 2005-2008/9, after which he improved very well.
Pre-IPL, he was avg, post-IPL he was one of the players who improved.
Rohit, jadeja, raina all were given a long rope - all three showed returns after 5 yrs, 3yrs, 3-4 yrs respectively.

I know. I used to hate sight of Raina in Indian team sheets of those years! But we were not overflowing with talent in those years as we are currently. We didn't have anyone even remotely close to Gill knocking on selection doors then.

Also Raina was at least an excellent fielder even in his formative years something which we can't say about fake Yuvraj!

agree with you.

dubey should be given a couple mor2 chances. if you csnt play the short ball then don't ever play cricket in SENA.

Same here about Raina and Rohit, glad to be proven wrong also glad Raina wasn’t given unlimited opportunities after he went down and age wasn’t on his side unlike Yuvi

India should ban this kid for a couple of matches until he sorts his attitude right. These kids start feeling like they're Superstars of the game already even before settling into National side. Just match-fee fine is will not suffice. He needs to be put in his place for the unncessary arrogance. Where did this arrogance go when
Boult & Co made him look like a tailender?

Same here about Raina and Rohit, glad to be proven wrong also glad Raina wasn’t given unlimited opportunities after he went down and age wasn’t on his side unlike Yuvi
I'm still livid at Kohli for recalling Raina for our ODI series in Eng in '18. He was one of the main reasons (along with Dhoni, of course!) why we lost a golden chance to beat Eng in Eng in ODIs despite being 1-0 up in a 3-ODI series!

Glad that Gill is playing first class matches in these conditions intead of warming up the benches with the hit and giggle squad. he will learn a lot.

Arrogance needs to be punished regardless of whether the person is new or a senior team member. Some of the antiques of Kohli against regular umpiring is hardly pardonable.

What did this kid do by the way that calls for ban?

As for kohli, his antics are tolerated as he is a proven performer. But, yes, his BC,MC etc expletives - we could see him mouthing if not having the "fortune" of hearing them - a very bad example as many/millions of kids and younger cricketers look up to him, they are something really ugly and avoidable.

Gill was fined for his contempt about an umpiring decision:

Just fine is not enough. He will soon upgrade to multimillion dollar contract with KKR. A Ranji match fee is pocket change.

Totally agree on that front. We were used to Sachin, Kumble, Dravid and others..and earlier cricketers like Kapil, Vengsarkar. simply walking off in anger even if things did not go their way (read Gavaskar and bedi were exceptions but even they did not mouth expletives if I am right.) Never have seen them mouthing expletives or giving the umpires an earful, even to the worst kind of them like bucknor also.

Arrogance has increased in international players especially since leagues like IPL are there and the role models are also not inspiring. I remember having read or seen somewhere the incident of pollard or someone having a street brawl like incident in IPL, if I remember it right.

Who else do you think would have won us those matches there instead of Dhoni and Raina?

But picking up senior players does that makes sense?
After CT 2017 we should have start giving chances to youngsters.

Shubman Gill’s run-a-ball 83 was the only high point for India A as New Zealand A grabbed the opening day honours in their first unofficial Test here on Thursday. India A were all out for 216 in their first innings and New Zealand A responded strongly, reaching 105 for two at the close of play and reducing the deficit to 111 runs with plenty of wickets in hand.

Sent in to bat after the coin landed in favour of home team captain Hamish Rutherford, India A soon found themselves in a spot of bother at 34 for three in the 17th over at the Hagley Oval.

The 20-year-old Gill, seen as one with a bright future, found an able ally in skipper Hanuma Vihari (51), and the duo added 119 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the ship.

Gill played fluently during his stay in the middle, relaxed in the knowledge that he had an experienced partner at the other hand, facing the home attack with a workmanlike approach.

Having recovered from the early blows that also included the big wicket of opener Mayank Agarwal, the visitors looked on course with both Gill and Vihari in good nick. However, off-spinner Cole McConchie (3/33), who was the second most successful home bowler behind medium pacer Michael Rae (4/54), dismissed Vihari in a bizarre manner after the batsman had done all the hard work.

After Vihari played a sweep shot directly into the shin of Rachin Ravindra at silly mid-on, the ball flew towards the wicketkeeper and Dane Cleaver calmly pouched it.

Vihari’s knock was a 79-ball effort was studded with eight hits to the fence. Stumper Kona Bharat seemed to be settling in nicely when the visitors lost the big wicket of Gill off Rae’s bowling. From 183 for five, it did not take the New Zealand A attack to warp up the India A innings. The home team lost skipper Rutherford for 28 but his opening partner Will Young (26) was there in the middle when stumps were pulled out. Ravindra made 47 off 67 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

I dont like his batting. The angle at which his bat comes down when he plays shots is awkward and there is a certain smoothness missing in his batting. And to make things worse is his attitude. He seems more in the mould of Ahmed Shehzad than Virat Kohli. Although I think Shehzad never displayed arrogance against umpires.

I don't think shehzad ever had Attitude issues he loved selfies and media hated his selfies , i still remember him As An u19 future batting star .
As for dube Pp posters were hyping him as The next big thing lol 125 thunderbolts and Leg side heaves without front foot movements are Laughable .
Faheem ashraf Is better the dube any day .
Shaw is going to have successfull and better stat international level then gill mark my words
Gill is too flamboyant to be consistent at international level

Yeah Shehzad was not arrogant, just vain. Gill is arrogant though. But more than that, his batting is not fluent. Its like watching a lumberjack chopping wood. I agree with you that Shaw might have a better career than Gill.

I will take Faheem over Dube any day. He is a much much better bowler and batsman than the overrated Dube.

We have a squad of mediocre/average-at-best players lining up: Shivam Dube, Shardul Thakur, Sanju Samson, Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Pandya brothers, Washington Sundar, Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, Raina, Dinesh Kartik and the worst of all, present day Dhoni.

Century in second innings. Should make this one count though. Also own an IPL. That’s how you get noticed.

He will get his chance soon. Hopefully gets a long run, including games in India.

I am in watching at the stadium, while the pitch has flattened a bit he played some sublime shots on his way to hundred. He just hit a six and now on 131 not out. I have taken few vidoes of his shots but don’t know how to post here.
