[VIDEOS] Sohail Akhtar - A clean striker of the ball

According to his cricinfo profile he hasnt played any cricket since May. While our domestic season has started for the last one month. I'm afarid if he has resumed his full time office clerk job again which he was doing for the last 2 years before PSL.

He has been playing with LQ.

I don't see him in LQ Abu Dhabhi T20 squad, nor he is playing domestic from FATA. Where he has been playing from LQ?

He played in the LQ Player Development Programme and he will be captaining the LQ Abu Dhabi T20 team.

Thanks, LQ is chasing 185 against Yorkshire and LQ is 40/1 in 5 overs, Imran Nazir gone on 2 runs. Lets hope Sohail Akhter fire today.

Looks like a complete hack but a needed addition to the toothless Paksitan side.

I would like to see Sharjeel Khan back too.

100* and still going.

Yorkshire in complete shock- not sure how to bowl at him :)))

matches are live on Geo Super. Cant wait to go home and watch highlights of Sohail Akhter innings

One of the weirdest batting styles I've seen. Look's like he doesn't hold the handle as tight as the average batsmen, which gives him the ability to hit all-around the park but which makes his big hitting rather baffling.

Don't know how he'll fair with the big boys though seeing as I think he may well be found out.

And Abu Dhabi probably has one of the longest boundaries in the world, makes it even more baffling.

Sohail akhtar deserved a look in

So we had a t20 series in UAE and basically playing only 2 hitters in fakhar zaman and Asif Ali. This guy played well against a good nz a team and deserved a go bc we need a hitter in our team.why are there so many useless accumulators in the team. Sarfraz should be rested / dropped.

Could be a mastertroke to promote him to opening in the PSL.

Looked rather flat footed. Let's see how he does in the rest of the tournament.

Looked all at sea in front of short balls. Hasan Ali first hit him and then bowled similar bowl again to remove him

HBL PSL has given name and hope to little known players, says Sohail Akhtar

Sharjah, 21 February 2019:

The HBL Pakistan Super League has given a new hope to little known players from remote areas, those who have no chance of making it big at the domestic circuit, said Lahore Qalandar's Sohail Akhtar.

The 32-year-old has emerged as a hard hitting batsman for Lahore Qalandars, he has now been given a role as an opener in the fourth edition of the HBL PSL this year.

Among the six franchise, Lahore Qalandars stand out in unearthing unknown players like Salman Irshad, Haris Rauf and Sohail Akhtar and developed them under their programme, taking the greenhorns to Australia for further grooming.

Despite making his first class debut in 2013 and a bit of performance of note in the National Twenty20, Sohail only earned a name through PSL 2018 where he came with a reputation of being a clean hitter. But coming down low in the order, he got limited chances.

This year he has been given a new role of opening the innings with Fakhar Zaman. That has provided Sohail to finally started to live up to his potential.

"I used to call players from my region (Abbottabad) for trials but they were so disheartened that they would instantly refuse, saying that its a waste of time and money," recalls Sohail.

"But since the start of the HBL PSL and the emergence of players like Haris, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and others they are now willing to come for trials. HBL PSL has given a new hope to unknown players from remote areas," said Sohail.

"Now I get calls every day with players saying that they want to give trials," said an excited Sohail. "By the emergence of players like Haris Rauf all the little known players now have hope. If there was no PSL there would have been no such thing."

The dashing batsman from Abbottabad smashed 37 and 39 in quick time in the first two matches and promises more in the tournament.

Sohail praised the management of Lahore for unearthing raw talent.

"Particularly franchise like Lahore has worked very well," said Sohail. "Look at the way Haris came to the fore and a lot of players now come for the trials because they have hope that if Haris can make it then any other player can make it big."

Sohail too started at lower level.

"I started playing cricket from district Haripur and then played for Abbottabad. Then I played from Candy Land and National Twenty20 from Abbottabad. But after some time I left cricket and did some office work.

Then one day my coach Ayaz Yousuf Zai called me and told me that Aaqib Javed (former Pakistan paceman and head coach of Lahore Qalanadars) wanted to take my trial. I was initially reluctant. I was not willing to go but then I gave it a try.

"Aaqib Bhai praised me and said that I play well and put me in the Qalanadars' DHA Academy. He prepared me and worked six to seven hours on me every day as my physical fitness was zero so he worked hard on me and got me ready for HBL PSL," recalls Sohail.

Last year's HBL PSL gave little chance to Sohail as he would come to bat in the last few overs but this year he has been given the task to open.

"I used to bat lower down the order. I had never opened the innings. But it is an idea of Aaqib and Sameen Rana. I was tagged as slogger and in the first PSL I used to get two to three overs to bat.

"So Aaqib and Sameen decided that I have talent and I can do well."

Sohail, who has a strike rate of 130.46 in 38 domestic T20 matches, said HBL PSL has given him a big opportunity to learn from local and foreign players.

"I have learnt a lot and have enjoyed playing in the HBL PSL, "he admits. "PSL gives us an opportunity to share the dressing room with some great players. How they practice and how they behave on and off the field. They tell us, what we used to miss, so we have got to learn that by playing in the HBL PSL.

"When I played domestic cricket there was no cricket in Pakistan but the HBL PSL has given us everything."

Despite age not on his side, Sohail harbours hope of a place in the national team.

"The target is always to play for Pakistan," said Sohail. "Even if you are playing for a club you have that aim and that fire to play for Pakistan.

"I am giving my hundred percent and if there is a chance I want to play for Pakistan."43cbe092-88d7-4a65-9e8f-0ea52b77ea6f.jpg

It does not matter how good you are with the bat, you cant keep dropping sitters. The guy cant catch the ball!

Hits 50 in the match against IU in PSL4 at NSK - granted boundaries are small but guess needs some ability!

he's good for these t20 leagues but he's not international quality.

Don’t know why they changed him from opening. He was doing a decent opening partnership with Fakhar but LQ ruined it.

Whenever I see him I always see a hack, but yet he has been so effective this season.

His growth as a T20 player has been amazing. If he impresses next year as well he will be there in that 2020 World T20 series or World Cup as they say these days.

Is he a better Hack than Asif Ali and Umer Akmal? Can he be tried before WC19?

Excellent 63 off 36 for Sohail for Northern vs Sindh

Some clean hits in that innings v Sindh albeit a sitter was dropped while on 44.

Yeah, there are plenty who can hit when there's no pressure. I've yet to see one with IQ capable of constructing an innings in different situations.

Cannot emphasize knowledge and understanding of the game enough. These guys simply don't have it. You guys need to get past this fazool word "talent" and understand that the mental aspect of cricket is far more important.

Aamer Yamin, Imad Wasim, Anwar Ali, Hammad Azam. These guys are clutch hitters but apart from Imad, their bowling isn't international quality.

Iftikhar and Asif don't look good to me.

Sohail Akhtar is a hack imo.

Lahore Qalandars have appointed Sohail Akhtar as captain for PSL 5

Another clean striker... Asif Ali was also the best clean striker in our system, So clean that his bat is still spotless clean:yk2

40* for Sohail Akhtar as captain vs MCC at the Gaddafi Stadium

Underrated player

He should be considered for the Pakistan squad in T20s

Does he have any prior captaincy experience?

LQ won a trophy under his captaincy in 2018 in Abu Dhabi, it was a decent tournament, consisting of six teams i guess, it had 2 BBL sides and SA domestic champions which LQ defeated in the final. Haris Rauf was brilliant in that tournament

I think he played a very selfish knock today. Lahore were only 60 odd after 10 overs thanks to Hafeez and Akhtar. This is unacceptable when you are chasing a mammoth total on a belter.

It only needed a Dunk to get them out of jail.

The more i see him the more i dislike him. Lahore needs to look beyond Akhtar.

Mamoon thinks he should not be anywhere near a PSL franchise and Imam ul Haq should be

Imam is more useful for a team that lacks an anchor but has multiple hitters. In isolation, Imam is not an ideal T20 player.

Apparently, Waqar Younis called him an 'amateur' yesterday on commentary.

He played a good supporting role yesterday.

He might not be a great player, but is calling him an 'amateur' too far?

He used to bowl pretty decent medium fast stuff around 130-132 kph. Don’t know why he stopped that

Imam is not useful in T20s at all even for a weak batting unit like Pakistan

Sohail has been quite impressive in his last few innings. He is a limited player but unlike other similar players - Fakhar and Asif to name two- he is playing very sensibly by waiting for bad balls or ones in his area of strength. He might not succeed at this against top bowlers but he has done his international chances a world of good with these innings.

Sohail Akhtar
Haider ALI
Shoaib Malik

The only 3 deserving Pak batsmen at the moment really

Not international quality. However, if his alternative is the pathetic Sharjeel, I would pick him in a heartbeat.

Batted well for 68 but as a captain, hopeless.

Both him and Sharjeel should open for Pakistan

Fakhar needs to be dropped

We have these good players in Pakistan but you would see the management selecting Ahsan Ali and Mohammad Rizwan to represent the country instead of these guys who actually have something about them

The guy has not played a single international game and he is written off already by Mamoon but Imam Ul Haq is better than him according to him also

Neither would Sharjeel. He will get worked out in one over. He no longer has the novelty factor.

If I was India or England, I would be delighted if Asad Shafiq got picked ahead of Sharjeel. Those type of players will bat Pakistan safely to defeat. Right up your street no doubt, then you will come on PP drooling over everyone else's big hitting superstars.

He doesn’t need to. You can see how poor his technique is and also the fact that he is 34 already.

Imam has good basics and is very young. He is already a prolific scorer in ODIs, but T20 is not a natural format for him.

Imam is the most underrated Pakistani player these days. If he wasn’t Inzamam’s nephew he wouldn’t get half the hate.

He is more than good enough for our pathetic standards and is our second best batsman. Haris is more talented but his fitness and attitude in general is awful. He doesn’t have half the work ethic and hunger that Imam has.

Who talked about Shafiq? Sharjeel has done nothing to warrant an international recall.

Why not pick Haider Ali? He is fitter, younger and has no documented history of failing in international cricket unlike Sharjeel.

You are not seriously saying Imam is a better T20 batsman than Sohail Akhtar are you?

Imam ul Haq for our T20 world cup squad. :91:

Do you need any more proof that Mamoon is praying we pick a side designed to surrender to his favourite teams?

When did Sharjeel fail in international cricket? Just when he was starting to establish himself, he was banned.

Stop spreading lies

By all means pick Haider, but is he an opener? Can he play fast short pitched deliveries?
