[VIDEOS] Talent Spotter: Abdullah Shafique

He already missed three 1st class matches due to Misbah.

He is talented or not?, he will be a good player or not? No one should asked these questions. Just let him play 1st class. What he will learn in a dressing room of Misbah, Fakhar, Rizwarner, Haris ?

At least he can gain enough experience in 1st class.

Don't be surprised, if Misbah isn't wasting series after series, he's too busy wasting players.

Misbah is completely brain dead. Abdullah Shafique has sat on the bench of this useless series vs ZIM when he should've been playing QEA Trophy.

Spot on.

This is a complete waste of Shafique's time (minus the money) right in the middle of his development. Play him or let him at least get in a good run of matches at the domestic level.

He must be doing a good job carrying the drinks and towels.

So good, that they don't want to change his role.

Surely he has to play the last t20 instead of fakhar and haider to open with babar and abdullah at 3

How has he not gotten a game yet?

Could have been producing some runs in the QEA Trophy 2020.

Surely he has to play the last t20 instead of fakhar and haider to open with babar and abdullah at 3

Yah i'd think so. Even so, one game isn't really ideal for a young batsman to make his debut. He should have been given all 3 games to maximise his exposure and give him confidence.

BESTTTT batsman in Pakistan right now.

He'll overtake Babar soon.

Will he play the final T20?

I don't think so.

Thats a huge claim, and kinda disrespectful to Babar who is probably Top 3 in the world in all formats rn.

He’s definitely better than Haider though, technically at least.

Technique can be taught, but not natural ability.
Haider has got big game temperament as well on top of that. I am not sure right now if Abdullah has this. He looked overawed when batting with Babar. Let's hope that is not a sign for things to come.

Love Babar, but how many times has he chased 300 in ODI's?

Or 200 in T20's?

Abdullah chased 200 in his first ever T20 lol.

And, in u19 list-a games he's chased 300 soooooo many times and has scored 180 in 50 over games.

Abdullah in 1-2 years will be our best bat.

But I love Babar.

I just wanna see:

Abdullah
Haider
Babar
Saud

As the top 4.

I fear if he is played next game and doesn't score he will be dropped and forgotten.

That is 100 percent true he should have been given 1 or 2 games in the odis and same with the t20s or he should have been released to play qaid e azam

When they batted together in NT20 babar looked leagues ahead of abdullah but I do think abdullah will be very good in the future

He’s definitely better than Haider though, technically at least.

Umar Amin is also technically better than Haider.

But in terms of overall quality, Haider is miles ahead of Abdullah and is the most exciting talent in Pakistan right now.

Abdullah is a Imam Ul Haq type batsman who will be consistent and steady. A very exciting prospect but not in the same league as Haider.

Abdullah is anything but a Imam type player. Has way more shots and can pick the gaps with ease. Another thing where he shines is his ability to rotate the strike, especially to drop and run two, something I haven't seen from any upcoming batsmen.

Abdullah is already a better red ball bat that Haider and doesn't share his weakness against the short ball. Seemed adept at navigating swing as well in the NT20, played the ball really late, more so than even Babar.

Wow man, did you watch Abdullah bat at all?? He looked miles better than Imam. Way more talented, much broader array of strokes, technically better, and most of all a much more dynamic batsman. So so much better at even simply rotating the strike than Imam.

Abdullah should have played in the first two T20s.Babar and Haider could have opened and Abdullah
could have come in at number three.Fakhar is not consistent. He has many technical flaws.

Abdullah does have good technique but he often hits straight to the fielders. Imam really struggled when he first came into the team but he has improved a lot now. He scores runs consistently and his strike rate has gone up. It's no insult to compare him to Imam. I wouldn't be surprised if Imam is our second most successful batsman across formats in the next few years while the likes of Haider and Abdullah find their feet and the old guard move on.

As for Haider and Abdullah, they have both not played enough to be compared on numbers, its just about potential. Abdullah has a better technique and defence so it wouldn't be surprising for him to be better at Test Cricket however Haider has an exceptional ability to pick up length early and brilliant hand eye coordination. So it remains to be seen who does better. In the shorter formats however, it is not even a competition.

Hahahahahahhahaha. Abdullah and Imam wow.

Ah yes, comparing Abdullah with a talented young batsman of ours who makes consistent runs at a improving strike is ridiculous.

However you comparing him with one of the best batsmen in the world who is leagues above him in every metric is a fair comparison despite Abdullah having played a grand total of.... 0 international matches.

I think you are comparing him to the initial Imam. If you watch Imam recently, he has improved both his strike rotation and shot range. What's even more impressive is that he has done it without compromising on his consistency.

I agree Abdullah is slightly more dynamic than Imam, but he is closer to the Imam/ Rizwan/ Haris Sohail range than the likes of Haider Ali / Fakhar Zaman/ Khushdil in terms of scoring at a fast pace.

Also, its not all about statistics of course, but in the recent t20 cup, Imam scored more runs in less innings than Abdullah with a much higher strike rate (145 vs 133). Ofcourse that doesn't make him a more dynamic player, but it shows that it is not such a ridiculous comparison.

Let's see when he makes his debut and play's some games but it would be unfair to expect Abdullah to match Babar or keep up with Haider in terms of shot making. He should have been given a chance in the ODIs.

You cant compare the two haider is more attacking abdullah takes his time and then can hit yes he played an innings were he Went from ball one

Is this a joke? What a insult! Babar is one of the best in the world, nevermind the best in Pakistan. Shafiq is nowhere close as good.

Abdullah is very good player but no were near babar at the moment but can be in future let's just enjoy it exciting times ahead

He and Haider Ali should open for us against NZ in Tests. Shan and Abid are gonna lose us yet another overseas series.

Agreed hundred percent...i know its early for him but he should be groomed for those positions and forget 2020

From what I have seen from him, there's a genuinely stroke maker batsman in him. Which is why I would definitely hope he's provided coaching and support.

Abdullah has been an opener since he started playing cricket. He is perfect as an opener.

I think he could be more. A batsman like him who's quite similar to Babar should be playing No.4 after Babar. Haider Ali is one of the openers. The option remains to be seen.

I would not play Haider oppening in tests in t20s and odis oppening is fine

I think Haider Ali should open. He's an opener. With Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and Hussain Talat all being middle order batsman, I feel Haider Ali competition could be too much. Whereas in the opening slot, its open and I feel Haider would be a solid option.

Main squad.

Hes definitely not going to play in the main squad for the tests if you think he and Abdullah are going to open in tests in New Zealand for the main squad you can think again.both should play in the shaheens abdullah can open haider down the order

Hes an opener/3 in t20s and odis
in tests you require high concentration I'd have abdullah top 3 as hes technique is very good Haider il have him at 5 as I dont think his technique is as good do better against the older ball.he can open in the shaheens thou with abdullah to see how he does

Bullet Drive, you’ve worked with him directly, was hoping you could provide some insight into his attitude and personality as for me approach to the game is the most important thing when it comes to an emerging batsman, but often this is very very difficult to judge without interviews etc. Would love to know more about the goals he sets for himself, how he operates, and how he analyses his own game and technique.

He wants to be the best batsman in the world. I've known him for over 3 years. At that time he wanted to be like Kohli. For his hunger of runs, his work on fitness etc. And since then, I've seen him literally grow so so much! Back then he was a club cricketer.

Every single day, and I mean every day, he used to wake up for Fajr and then go to training in the morning. Running, walking etc. And then he'd start his cricket sessions.

He is quite a shy kind of guy also, similar to Babar.

One thing I assure you, if this guy fails in international cricket, it won't be because of lack of effort put in from him.

Amazing, amazing to hear. I’ve really taken quite a liking to him from what I’ve seen (and I’ve gone through pretty much every video available of him batting or interviewing, just to get a sense of his work ethic).

We need honest, hard workers. He will go very far. What’s his process like on improvement as far as technique goes? Does he still talk to Gio Collussi remotely? I don’t really trust our domestic/national team coaches.

He talks to Gio but they don't really talk technique or anything. I told Gio about him before he worked with him, once Gio worked with him he said this guy will definitely play international cricket and was a HUGE fan out of everyone he worked with(Zeeshan Malik, Umer Siddiq etc etc)

His English is also decent, bit better than Babar's but it's pretty slow and he is a bit shy to speak I guess.

But Misbah really really loves him(kinda worrying) and is a massive fan.

He shouldn’t worry about the English. What’s important is communicating effectively whatever language it’s in - speaking smartly and knowledgeably about the game. From what I’ve seen so far, he has a good head on his shoulders.

For now, the main focus is to score runs - big runs - and keep working on his technique by analyzing his own game and learning to read bowlers. My prayers are with him. Class talent.

If Abdullah and Haider won't play in playing XI against NZ, then we are losing the Test series yet again. We need attacking young batsmen in the playing XI. The likes of Abid, Azhar and Shan are gonna let us down yet again, and we are not learning at all. The team is just travelling for fun outside the ground I guess.

pakistan gives t20 too much weightage , t20 games should be used to try out new players. Instead we are hell bent on playing our best 11 in t20s.

No new batsmen should debut in NZ , wait for home games to do that.

Abdulah has played one FC match. On what basis are we selecting him, that too against Boult in NZ of all places?

He will get his chance soon. But it shouldn't and won't be on this tour. Same for Haider.

Shan had a 150 last tour and set up the match only for absolute brain dead captaincy and some poor bowling to make a meal for it. If he plays anything close to that innings on this tour (2 tests), he has done his job.

Abid is no good and Azhar is done, but their replacements shouldn't be 20 year olds with basically less than 5 matches under their belt.

Yes I agree we need attacking Bateman but this tour is tough even with these 2 we we will proberly end up losing the tour anyways.i think they will play in the shaheens 4 day games

Want Abdullah and Haider to play first class there....no test debuts please.....

:))) no one picked him. Damn.

From Pakistan to no one willing to take you for PSL.

Surprising exclusion. Not exactly a dynamite T20 batsman but could have been a decent batsman for the role of consolidator and someone who can push a bit when required.

He put himself in the gold category realistically the best chance for him to be picked was silver or bronze.would you pick someone whos an consolidator in silver category he didnt plsy for pakistan he woule have been picked for Emerging i think

Yes fast tracking him to Pakistan meant he isnt eligible for emerging category anymore.

This was really unfortunate. PSL is the best bridge to international LOI cricket, standard is higher than regular domestic. We need to have our best talents there. Really anyone playing T20 or ODI cricket (or at the fringes of selection) has to be playing PSL to develop/see their worth.

Imam good thing was picked, we need to have him playing in PSL to develop his power game to help improve further in ODIs given he's already the best bat after Babar.

But really as the young batsman "prodigy" we're trying to fast track into the international side, this is the number 1 guy we needed to be playing these PSL games. Playing, even just being in the squad isn't enough. And yet we couldn't even get him a squad. It was in Pakistan national team's best interest for him to be playing.

It's fine, I'd rather have him focus on FC and ODI's than potentially performing poorly in PSL and being discarded forever.

Good. Too many youngsters have been wrecked by overdosing on T20.

Nothing against T20s but it's frankly gotten ridiculous where the likes of Shadab have played 17 FC matches (mostly Tests) and 139 T20s.

So work on your technique and hit some balls in the nets in the off-season instead lad.

Very true - he may have been saved here.

Poor Abdullah isn’t playing First Class either though. Missed all of this current season. Now missing List A too, though hopefully he returns to the team soon.

Should have been picked, no ifs and buts here. PSL friends and family league draft was all fixed. The corrupt officials in Pakistan cricket system continue to dominate and do things the way they see fit. Nobody can touch them or do anything about this. They did exactly the same thing for the National T20 as well.
