[VIDEOS] Talent Spotter: Abdullah Shafique

Pakistan cricket - years of lifting players to the stars, then dropping them like a sack of potatoes in no time.

Then we wonder why we keep losing players who we had high hopes for.

Zero player management or planning by those running the game in the country.

Don't get why the poor kid was languishing on the side lines for this long. This PAK may have an ODI opener here, early days though.

I wouldnt be surprised if Shafiqs move to Balochistan was done by Ramiz Raja. RR used to rave about him on his YouTube channel during the last National T20 cup

Another thing to note, Mike Haysman mentioned how Abdullah Shafiqs been getting wasted for the past 11 months

His appalling handling is a source of shame. He may or may not be the solution to our opeing problems but wasting a whole year as a net player is criminal.

Good lad

Pakistan has some exciting batsmen to look forward to.

Abdullah
Haider
Bangalzai
Saud

I would say Hassan Khan also. Good, talented cricketers

He looks decent and with time could be the opener Pakistan are looking for, but like Haider Ali and Naseem Shah he needs some domestic seasoning.

It is early days but Shafiq looks technically good.Shafiq and Bunglezai are potential openers for Pakistan. They need to play a full season of domestic cricket.

It makes no sense that this lad has played so little cricket in recent times.

It shows the lack of planning when it comes to handling such players.

Surely he was a worth a game or 2,If you compare him to the mediocre Abid and Butt

Got good potential, needs to keep developing in domestic. Not ready for international cricket in my opinion.

What happened to Huraira? How have Rohail Nazir’s returns been in 4-day?

Rohail had a pretty good domestic season last year in List A cricket (Averaged 50 in 8 matches with SR of 95). Couldn’t play much QAE as he was part of Pak A tour of NZ where he led the Pak A in the 4 day match and a scored a 100 as well. In red ball cricket he is the next in line to Rizwan as backup. However, Mohammad Haris has possibly super seeded him in 50 overs format as he got picked vs NZ ODI series as backup keeper.

Huraira just scored a 100 in in his debut 2nd XI QAE match as I mentioned in his thread. There is a chance he can get a FC debut this season.

His batting has natural elegance which is pretty pleasing to the eye. I hope he can keep on developing so that we can see more of his batting in coming years.

Huarira is a better player than bangalzai hands down

The guy definitely passes the eye test for sure

He is winning me over. Definitely has a much higher ceiling than the majority of the batters in the domestic. What's baffling is he should have been playing as much domestic cricket as possible rather than warming the bench for international team for over a year.

2 things different from him and Babar is that Abdullah doesnt mind going over the top and doesn't mind playing the sweep.

He looks more of a test player and to his eternal shame Misbah picked Butt and Abid. He may not become the player we hope for but at least he shows potential.

73 off 44 - well played Abdullah!

He's technically very, very good. Of all the domestic players I've seen in the last few years, he has the best chance of developing into a world class test batsman.

He needs to play more first-class cricket. Unfortunately, the absolute shambles that is the PCB selection "process" has deprived him of at least one season worth of practice, and it might still deprive him of more.

I think I have written it before that it was a big blunder to select him for those t20s against New Zealand. He had to miss a whole season of Quaid-e-Azam trophy, which could've been very beneficial for his development. Focus should be to groom him to be a good test and ODi player.

With the player like Abid Ali as our test opener, we are not going anywhere. He can replace him in future.

Thank you, really helpful!

Proper shots. Proper player. Get him in the test XI please.

Hmm, I wouldn’t do that yet. Would give him ~2 full seasons in domestics. Would prioritise the inclusion of Saud Shakeel and / or Usman Salahuddin in the Test team.

The problem is that Azhar is blocking the evolution of the team by hogging the No. 3 spot. He should just go out to open in his last WTC cycle. Given PAK are not playing overseas in SENA this should be fine. Would open up No. 3 for Saud or for Babar to promote himself. Then a No.3 to No.6, inclusive, of Babar, Saud, Fawad, Rizwan can materialise. If PAK can find a partner for Azhar at the top then great. If not, Usman or even Asad Shafiq can be used to bide valuable time with mostly Asian series in this cycle.

By the Abdullah should be rearing to go.

It's hilarious that the PCB had to contrive a transfer to Balochistan for Abdullah Shafique to get a regular run in this tournament. This absolutely lays bare the shocking lack of judgement by coaches in domestic cricket.

Ramiz is absolutely correct to belittle and humiliate these men. If Ramiz's aggressive approach towards promoting youth players in first-class cricket bears dividends over the next few years, there's no reason why players like Shafique won't develop and progress to international cricket.

I was thinking the same. Over him they picked Kami and Shahzad and we wonder why we struggle to produce young batsman

hope he has a good domestic fc season, his playing style is perfect to replace azhar ali at 3 in the test team if he has the consistency and mentality to back it up.

Embarrassing and shambolic and shows the blinkered policies of some.

Abdullah seems to enjoy vs pace. Depending on how this upcoming season goes, maybe he gets into consideration for the WC in Australia next year.

AS reminds me of a young Michael Vaughan. He is worth investing and After the T20 WC ,we need to play him in all formats, although he will be better suited to ODIs and Tests.

This guy is an insane talent...Babar Azam level talent...babar and Abdullah will be our version of kohli and rohit

Kamran Ghulam probably deserves a shot too if he can continue his form this season

If he does, then Azhar should be given a nudge to either open or call it a day. A misfiring Azhar hogging the No.3 spot is blocking this team from evolving.

Ideally both Saud and KG can feature in the XI.

top 6 batsmen for ODIs

Fakhar Zaman
Imam/Abdullah
Babar Azam
Saud Shakeel
Kamran Ghulam
Muhammad Rizwan

Imam? Top 6? I’d love to hear you explain how?

Kamran Ghulam and Abdullah Shafique are top 6 now without even playing any international games, ok.

Dismissed for 60 but another good innings today.

This guy is something you don't see much in Pakistan. Insanely good talent. The technique is just flawless and so watchable. If he doesn't screw up, I think we could be comparing him to our greats by the end of his career.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The lad has something to work with but our history is littered with these players. To name a few from the last 20 years , Imran Nazir & Farhat, Tufeeq Umar, Ahmed Shazad, Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Khalid Latif and there will be others I have missed. The most aspect is the intelligence of the guy, let's hope he has the grey matter to score runs.

His intelligence is the very thing that lead me to get a bit carried away. By all accounts, he is one of those geeky batsmen, and a very intelligent fellow.

Effortless batting.

Lovely timer of the ball.

We don't help our players do we - he's been wasted carrying drinks and towels around the world when he should have been given chances for Pakistan or should have been gaining more experience in domestic cricket.

That would be great but I will wait until I see some consistent performances for PK

I said earlier that he reminds me of a young Michael Vaughan. If only he becomes 1/2 the player then he would have had a good career

Vaughan averaged 41 in test which is good but, I don't know how good of a career will Abdullah will have if he is 1/2 the player Vaughan is

An average of 20 in tests. 13 in odis and 7 in t20. I hope the posters will be happy with these averages since half of Vaughans means a good career.

Vaughan at one stage was amongst the top players in the World- 3 100s in an Ashes series against Mcgrath and Warne. Then His knees gave way and he was never the same player.

I wonder if these domestic coaches have any shame.

They benched this guy and played Kamran Akmal. Why doesn't any one in the press call these guys out ? Who holds them responsible...

Looked so skillful batter (even its against some average bowling)
Big Lana to Misbah to not play this guy in any of the games; and played his buddies Asif Ali

He had a nice debut vs Zimbabwe but then had 2 ducks vs NZ and hasn't played since. He is also an opener which Pakistan has an abundance of in T20's now. Middle order batsmen is what Pakistan need in T20's.

Should have gotten games in ODI's though or at least a couple of them. Unfortunate NZ series did not go through because he would have received opportunities in that.

Hopefully he will be.

Technically sound, lazy elegance. Exciting talent.
