A profile of an exciting young spinner, who has impressed everyone with some very impressive performances for Sindh 2nd XI this year.

Full name: Abrar Ahmed

Born: 11 September, 1998, Karachi

Major teams: Karachi Region Whites, Sindh, Karachi Kings

Batting style: Right-handed

Bowling style: Right-arm leg-spin

Height : 6 ft

Interest in Cricket

I am the youngest in my family and have four elder brothers. When I was very young, we would play tape-ball cricket on the street close to home. One of my brothers was a finger-spinner and would get people out all the time which fuelled my interest in spin bowling. My father was very much against my playing cricket as he wasn’t sure if cricket would earn me a good living but later on, seeing my passion and after being pleaded to by my brothers, he decided to let me have my way and play cricket.

Honoured to be a Hafiz-e-Quran but I need to work on my English

My regular education suffered due to my passion for cricket, but I am proud and honoured to be a Hafiz-e-Quran. Whilst it will be difficult to try and study more, there is one huge gap in my education which is the fact that my English is very weak and that is one skill I will be working on in the future.

A finger spinner who can bowl leg-spin, googly, and flipper

I am unique in the sense that as a finger-spinner, I am also able to bowl leg-spin and have a pretty good googly and can also bowl a flipper. All of this I learnt not in any academy but by watching other players on television and all of these deliveries are getting me wickets in all formats. So, I learnt how to angle the ball to get the best results, how to hold the ball to bowl a flipper or how to ‘skid’ the ball on any surface. Having said that, my main strength is leg-spin but I make no use of my wrists to bowl which I guess makes me difficult to handle or read.

Chance to play proper cricket based upon my skills in tape-ball cricket at the RLCA

I would play a lot in tape-ball matches which would be played on roads in different parts of Karachi and in one of these games, a gentleman who I didn’t know, came up to me and said that since I bowled so well, I should start playing hard-ball cricket. Inspired by what he said, I went to the Rashid Latif Cricket Academy (RLCA) in 2014 and asked if I could train there. I was told that I could only practice there after appearing for trials as the academy had some senior players in it and I couldn’t just walk in and start training alongside them. Thankfully, I impressed all in these trials and was given permission to practice three days a week. Around the same time, I was given a chance to play in the Lines Area Club and I continued to perform well there, causing the Head Coach in the club to tell me to look for a position in the Under-19 side at the district level.

Playing District level Under-19 cricket in Karachi

I appeared for the trials and despite the high numbers of players who turned out for the trials, I was able to impress the coaches with my ability to bowl well to all types of batsmen which got me into the Zone 3 side in 2015. I only played 4 matches that season but in the Inter-District Under-19 Two-Day Tournament, I took 15 wickets at an average of 25. After that, I played the Inter Region Under-19 Three Day Tournament (2015/16) for Karachi Region and in 3 matches took 13 wickets. I was then spotted by Rashid Latif who really praised me and asked me to play in a local one-day tournament but I got afflicted with illness and could not play any further cricket that season.

Challenged by coach to take 50 wickets in a tournament but I took 54!

In the next season, Bharat Kumar who was our coach for Karachi Zone 3 told me that he was really impressed by my bowling but as a challenge asked me to see if I could get 50 wickets in the Regional Inter-District Under-19 Two Day Tournament (2016/17). I took that challenge on in this red-ball tournament and went past the 50 wickets mark and actually ended up with 54 wickets in 6 games, which included 7 five-wicket hauls at an average of just 12.

Excelling on greener wickets and out of my comfort zone to become the highest wicket-taker in regional One-Day tournament

After bowling on spin-friendly wickets in Karachi, I was asked to bowl on wickets which were less friendly for spinners. Initially, I felt disappointed and a little sad because I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to perform outside of my comfort zone of pitches in Karachi but with the Almighty’s help, I did not disappoint my team management. Playing for Karachi Region Whites Under-19 side in Bahawalpur, Abbottabad, Islamabad and Mirpur during the Inter-Region Under-19 One-Day Tournament (2016/17), I took 17 wickets to become the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. The most impressive part of this achievement was that I was competing on fast-bowler friendly wickets against the likes of Mohammad Hasnain and Mohammad Musa and experienced spinners such as Ibtisam Sheikh and I was still able to be the top wicket-taker.

High praise from Mickey Arthur, but disappointment due to injury in PSL 2017

I was selected by Karachi Kings to play in the second season of the PSL and my performances in practice games caught the eye of the Head Coach Mickey Arthur who really praised me for my bowling. I was then rewarded with the opportunity to play two matches in that tournament and it seemed that I would have a good season in the PSL. However, I had been feeling some pain in my back and once tests were done, it was found that I had two stress fractures in my back – specifically in the L4 and L5 vertebrae which meant that my PSL season came to an abrupt end. I was then sent to recuperate in the NCA on Mickey Arthur’s recommendation. I continued my rehabilitation for almost one year during which I suffered a lot of pain but continued to work on my fitness. I played no cricket in most of 2018 but towards the end of the year, was able to play some games and was once again selected by Karachi Kings for the 2018 edition of the PSL. But in 2018, Umer Khan was preferred over me during the matches where he impressed everyone with his performances.

Mickey continued to encourage me even after his departure from Pakistan and sent me a text message saying that I was a natural talent, and I should continue working hard. I will always treasure his advice and praise for me.

High quality performances in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy for second XIs in 2020/21

I was asked to play in the National T20 Cup in 2020/21 as they considered me to be a T20 specialist. I was asked to sit out three games but I did play 2 matches for Sindh second XI in that tournament where I bowled decent spells, sometimes with the new ball, and took 3 wickets as well. An injury to a player in the side in the second XI for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy allowed me an opportunity to play in the 3-day red-ball tournament, and I did not disappoint anyone with some excellent performances and as of now am the leading wicket-taker with 39 wickets at an average of 11.87 to my name. My most memorable game so far in this tournament was the one against Central Punjab who had some big names such as Usman Salahuddin and Mohammad Saad and I was able to claim their wickets which was very satisfying.

Shahid Afridi as someone I idolize as a role model but want to play like Shoaib Akhtar

I have been watching Shahid Afridi play cricket since childhood and there is so much respect in my heart for someone who has done so much for Pakistan. He has always been my role model but it’s Shoaib Akhtar’s ‘ bouncer-bowling’ attitude which really inspires me every time I play. When it comes to looking at techniques of bowlers, I regularly watch videos of Sunil Narine, Ajantha Mendis and Mujeeb Ur Rahman as there is plenty to learn from the way they bowl, especially since they have a bowling style similar to myself.

Aspirations to play for Pakistan but at the moment, concentrating on performing well in domestic cricket

Like any aspiring cricketer, I would like to represent Pakistan in any format where I can serve my country but at the moment, I am working hard to ensure that I do well in domestic cricket so as to come to the attention of the selectors. I am also hoping to get another chance to play in the next edition of the Pakistan Super League where I can further showcase my skills.

Some excellent words of praise from Mickey Arthur about Abrar:

"He is a good boy and could become a very good bowler"

"He has bowled very well for the Sindh 2nd XIs and taken a lot of wickets and could get a go in the 1st XI side"

In Round 5, Day 1 of QeA20

Abrar has taken 2-34 vs Balochistan

Continues to lead the wicket-takers list.

Definitely one to watch out for, was wondering what happened to him after the few PSL games, hope to see him in the first XI's. Really surprised that Sindh haven't dropped Asghar to make way for Abrar. Surely he can't do worse.

Mickey Arthur rated him highly and kept an eye on him when he was injured and doing his rehab at the NCA.

Having a brilliant season so far.

Definitely one to watch.

I think its important for his development that he plays 1st X1 for Sindh this season. He also needs to play on flat wickets and bowl long spells to fine tune his bowling. Lets he is good enough to play for PK soon.

The way he is bowling surely he can't be too far away from being picked for the Sindh 1st XI.

the only issue is mystery spinners tend to feast on low quality players who are technically deficient, top quality players with the aid of slow mo tend to figure out how to read spinners really quickly.

deserves a first xi spot tho, asghar hasnt done much of note so far

According to Rashid Latif that he was picked for the 3rd round but couldn't play due to finger being bruised

Sarfaraz needs to do something for once. Must play for the first XI if he continues this.

Exciting too see different talent coming thru !

Hope he is given a chance soon, could be a real asset

11 more wickets in his latest match, he's got a 5 wicket haul 7 times in 10 innings. That is remarkable.

Crazy stats. Has got to be promoted to the first XI. Must be tough for Sarfraz to have to drop one of his friends

Extraordinary numbers. Not sure for how long he can be kept out of Sindh’s main XI. They have lost their last match so we might see some change and Abrar getting a go.

Unreal numbers so far, Sindh would be stupid not to include him in the 1st XI given that they are struggling. A quality spinner needs to be looked after and could serve Pakistan Cricket for a very long time across all formats.

Abrar Ahmed have been picked-up from Sindh Second XI squads following impressive performances in the Second XIs three-day tournament.

yes looking forward to seeing him tomorrow.

Hope he isnt just carrying the drinks as i am not sure how they will fit him and Asghar tomorrow

The equation for leg spinners is simple- a hard spun leg break pitching on off and middle. For all the talk of googlies, very few leg spinners survive in the longer form without a hard spun leg break. The variations make good copy but dont get good batsman out. Lets hope the lad is the real deal.

Asghar is dropped from first 11
Sindh
First XI - Asad Shafiq (C), Saud Shakeel (VC), Aamer Ali, Abrar Ahmed, Ashiq Ali, Azizullah, Hassan Mohsin, Jahid Ali, Mir Hamza, Muhammad Hassan, Omair Bin Yousaf, Saad Ali, Shahnawaz Dahani, Sharjeel Khan, Shehzar Muhammad, Tabish Khan

saw a few overs from the lad, seemed to mix it up, okish control, but pace seemed a bit slow, especially for a day 2 pitch, similar to ajantha mendis in his approach.

think he would be a lot more difficult to face on lower quality tracks, or maybe day 4 or 5 pitch. i think ashiq ali will pbly take his spot unless he takes a few wickets in this game.

Good bowler.

But Saif Badar seriously took him apart which was sad. Hit 7 boundaries off him. Fully smashed him and ruined his confidence. That was crazy by Saif.

Its a battibg wicket look at the treatment Zahid Mahmood got .In the first innings he took all tail enders wickets. I thought i saw some potential

2/119 - First game - lets see how much he improves as this is probably a different level.

Have to say, that was lightning quick from you. Wish I had your eye of judging talent after watching them bowl in their debut FC innings. Best poster on PP, Mashallah.

Look I am free to have my opinion even if it offends you. I did watch him a fair bit yesterday and he doesnt look good to me

Who says I am offended. I am just admiring your keen eye.
All the clowning aside, not really a believer in judging players like that. You can feel free to think he is ordinary, however what I see is 48 wkts in 5 2nd XI games. That is enough for me to give him a good consistent run in FC cricket, what he does now is entirely up to him and his hard work. What is see is a lot of potential, specially after seeing him bowl today.

seems to have done better today than yesterday, will get a great opportunity with a big total to defend in last innings.

Only his first game in First XI

no doubt, im not expecting him to run through the line up, but conditions in the first innings of any four or five day game are brutal for a debutant spinner.

im hopeful he will improve, but he needs to bowl with a faster more consistent pace. good batsmen will make his life difficult by using their feet against him, he doesnt seem to spin it big.

i havnt seen him properly, but i think he bowls a front of the hand leggie, and back of the hand googlie, and maybe a front of the hand offie. good batsmen wont have trouble picking the googly imo.

still early days, and may be he'll get more confident to try other variation as he settles in the team.

Easy there keep your sarcasm to yourself. while you admire my keen eye I really don't admire your sarcasm

In cricketing terms, I see a spinner who has no stock ball and doesnt put enough revs on the ball to be successful in longer version. I have seen cricket for 20+ years and thats my assessment. Would be happy if he proves me wrong

I hope Abrar recovers from this absolute hammering he's received by Saif Badar.

It isn't fair what Saif has done to him.

Scored 11 boundaries of him.

Has to spin his leg break or he will be toast.

Defo needs to spin his leggie..i think he is a ajanta mendis type bowler who eventually disappeared becauss he couldnt spin enuff.

From PCB Report:

Opener Zain Abbas followed his 95 in the first innings with an 89-ball 42, which included six fours, before he was dismissed by debutant Abrar Ahmed, whose leg-spin accounted for three Southern Punjab batsmen in the innings.

Imran Rafiq was the other notable run-getter with 41 from 93 balls and his stay at the crease was also curtailed by Abrar.

Abrar returned three for 80 and his figures for the match were five for 199.

Wouldn't be surprised if most of the "don't rate him" people start calling him the next Shane Warne after one good performance. We move in extremes

Revs on the ball etc are outdated in todays cricket. What matters nowadays is accuracy and variation in pace. Yasir Shah is the biggest example, hardly spins the ball sqaure, most of his wickets are from sliders that rap the batsmen on the pads.

That is v true...but he did say in his interview he doesnt use his wrist.

I do think he needs to try to spin but defo some potential there. I am more worried sindh might drop him even their team selection was awful this game. They had hasan mohsin playing as a seamer

5 wickets in the match - not the worst performance.

Room for improvement, but I thought he did ok.

Revs on the ball and amount of spin is never out dated specially for test cricket. Yasir shah at his peak had a vicious bouncing leg break and a top-spinner which actually made his slider effective

I seriously don't remember Yasir ever getting sharp spin away from the right handers, neither does his googly spin. Only times he spins it square is round the wicket to left handers, bowling into the rough.

He disnt get big spin but he always got sharp vicious spin with bounce at his peak. Check his wickets against Srilanka in 2015. I never said he has a good googly

Asad Shafiq, Sindh's captain, comments on Abrar Ahmed

"Both Abrar and Shahnawaz have done well for the 2nd XI; Abrar was supposed to be a surprise package and whilst he could not deliver in the way we expected, the fact is that the pitch was not that supporting for his type of bowling; I am hopeful that the State Bank and UBL pitches will prove to be more helpful for him; As a captain I am satisfied in the way he bowled in his first game"

Young leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed took three wickets for 123 runs on Day 2 of Round 5 of QeA20

Has potential, although a few areas that he needs to work on.

Yasir Shah won't be around forever.....

He's a good example of why 6 first XI teams are enough. He was ripping through batting lineups in second XI but has been pretty average in the first class matches he's played so far.

Agreed, in the previous system he would have been fast tracked to the natural team for 2 T20s then dropped forever, I reckon

Abrar has potential and the good thing is that instead of being fast-tracked he is now going through the grind in FC cricket. He will come out a better and more experienced bowler.

Good to see hes been made to work hard was to easy for him in the second xi

Precisely correct. And it will only help long-term going through some of the up and downs right now and trying to dominate pretty solid competition. There is also a tendency to not change anything or find newer ways to improve when you are dominating but when you're struggling, you always look for methods to increase your ability and hopefully he can.

As he doesn't turn the ball much, he has to bowl at pace and get the ball to dip. That is a tall task, only Kumble as managed to achieve that.

He does get turn similar to yasir in terms of turn his control needs to improve but i like him

What I love most about him is that he gives the ball so much air. Spinners today are afraid to do this - which takes away the chance from the ball to spin.

Technically I don't know what he needs to improve - but from evidence he seems to have taken to the big leagues unafraid. Good.

Basit Ali speaking to the media:

"I am saying this based on my experience that Abrar Ahmed, Shahnawaz Dhani and Mohammad Umer who have come up from 2nd XI, will be seen representing Pakistan in the next 1-1.5 years - this is my promise to you"

Lets see if he keepsn to his promise but they do look good

He will never be a big turner of the ball. He has to turn it enough to beat the bat and bowl around 57 mph range. As I explained earlier, with the pace he has to get dip otherwise you are bowling full and getting whacked, which is what is happening to him too often. Lets hope he knows that too.

Yasir didn't turrn it that much but he took plenty of wickets.hes in experienced he will gain that experience and his control will improve.the video above he didnt get massive turn but it was enough to beat the bat

Karachi, 11 December 2020: Top-ranked Sindh further consolidated their tournament victory chances courtesy a nine-wicket haul by leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed that helped them attain a 68-run lead over Balochistan on day-two of the tenth and final round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Second XI tournament being played across three Karachi venues.

Balochistan vs Sindh, KCCA Stadium, Karachi:

Resuming at the overnight score of 15 for no loss, Balochistan were spun-out for 211 runs by Sindh leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed who took nine wickets for 98 runs in 35.2 overs. Abrar singlehandedly ran through the Balochistan batting line-up to further consolidate top-ranked Sindh’s grip on the title.
