I’m sure Basit had more say in this decision than Shafiq. Asad Shafiq (probably) barely knows anything about the spin options available to Sindh.

This just shows the difference in the standard of cricket being played in first class and in the second xi games. Just look at this example of Abrar Ahmed, he performed exceptional in the 2nd xi games he played (48 wickets), and then gets promoted to 1st XI and struggled a bit, as the competition was higher and stronger and then he gets demoted to the 2nd xi (terrible decision in my opinion) and picks up 9 wickets in his first match back.

This is how a domestic system should be. A player performs and then gets promoted and notices and feels the difference in the standard of cricket being played. This is how world class players are going to be produced and they are going to be mentally stronger once they reach international level.

Now that there is a strong system, and players know that they have to work twice as hard even after getting promoted to the first xi of their respective teams, young cricketers should not be fast tracked unless they are performing exceptional and have proved to the selectors that they are ready for international cricket. Before there was no system, as many young cricketers got lost in the system, so I was one of those fans that always wanted young cricketers to perform and get selected in international, because of the danger of them getting lost as well.

But now with this strong system, the more first class cricket these cricketers play, the more it will benefit them and improve their game. Before the players use to learn at international level and they were not really ready. They were 50 to 60 percent of the finished product. When you go to international, players should be 85 to 90 percent of the finished product.

To be honest its good that he had a excellent games in the second xi and its also good he didnt get to many wickets it will bring down to earth and will make him work even harder to make sure he plays in the first and stays in the first xi

Pakistan Shaheens are playing in Sri Lanka and you don't have enough spinners only Pakistan selectors could do that should have kept atleast 5 spinners for 4 days and ODI combined they just have Zahid and Abrar should have added Faisal Akram , Zafar Gohar or Aarish Ali Khan and Usama Mir.

Congratulations to the guy for getting a call-up against England.

He has a few variations but having watched him a few times (albeit in highlights), I don't really understand what his stock delivery is? Also I still feel his control is not that great and in order to trouble the international quality batsmen in the T20 format, the most critical thing is the length you bowl.

Does he bowl a carrom ball? The commentators in the National T20 were mentioning that he does bowl a carrom ball; I am not sure about that though.

Hopefully, he will be given chances somewhere in the series so that some of the question marks around his bowling can be better answered.

Could have tried literally anyone, even the 15 average hacks. U Qadir was already a poor selection with Shadab being our go to leggie. Even Qasim Akram and Agha Salman were better choices than specialist Abrar.

Not how selection for the National team works. The point is to have wicket takers in the non-PP overs. Agha is a part timer and Qasim prefers to bowl in the PP. Abrar is a mystery spinner that outside teams have not played.

It was a similar thought process with Qadir, who did well in domestics and then did good against Zimbabwe and SA as well. Leg spinners need to have regular overs to form rhythm. However, if you barely get to bowl in 18 months, you’ll have difficulty as well.

Southern Punjab opener Zain Abbas scored his seventh career century and mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed recorded his second 10-wicket haul in a match for Sindh as their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy encounter entered into an exciting stage at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Sindh’s Abrar Ahmed continued his top form when he followed up his first innings figures of 37.3-10-94-5 with 31.5-3-100-6 for match figures of 11 for 194. The 23-year-old’s career-best remains 11 for 63 against Balochistan at the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi in November 2021.

Abrar, whose overnight figures were one for 29 in his eighth first-class match, accounted for Zain Abbas, Salman Ali Agha (13), Sharoon Siraj (17), Muhammad Imran Randhawa (11), Mohammad Abbas (16) and Ahmed Bashir (0).

Lahore, 18 October 2022: Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed continued to make headlines when he bowled Sindh to a sensational 10-wicket victory over defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the fourth and last day of the fourth round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 in front of PCB cameras.

Abrar, the bespectacled 24-year-old Karachi-born spinner, followed up his first innings figures of 39.2-9-130-4 with 19-9-29-5 as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were mesmerised and spun out for a paltry 108 in 46.2 overs at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Sindh achieved the three-run victory target in the first over to notched up their first victory of the season.

Earlier, Sindh, replying to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s first innings score of 384, were dismissed after adding one run to their overnight score of 489 for nine to earn a 106-run first innings lead.

But as the match appeared to head for a draw, Abrar demonstrated why he is one of the finest and highly-rated spinner in the circuit when he bamboozled the middle-order that slipped from 38 for one to 108 all-out. Abrar accounted for Sahibzada Farhan (12), Kamran Ghulam (0), Nabi Gul (4), Arshadullah (6) and Imran Khan Snr (4).

This was Abrar’s second match of the season. In his opening match against ATF Southern Punjab, Abrar had recorded match figures of 11 for 194. Abrar now has 20 wickets in two matches, with Sindh’s fifth round match against Balochistan at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Overall, Abrar has claimed 53 wickets in nine first-class matches.

One of the major stories since the introduction of better and more competitive domestic structures has been Sindh’s inability to secure berth in any of the last three finals of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

The team representing one of the strongest nurseries of cricketers could not win a first-class match and finished second last in the 2019-20 edition, finished last the next season with one win and five losses and missed out on a berth in the final by seven points in the last season to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who went on to win the title for the second time on the bounce.

This season, however, things have been different. Sindh have emerged as one of the stronger sides. After the first four rounds, they are placed second after an emphatic win against the defending champions yesterday.

That their win over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was emphatic was because of Abrar Ahmed. The 24-year-old mystery spinner’s impeccable spells that perfectly blended leg-breaks with sly execution of googlies had Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who were trailing by 106 runs, fending off an innings defeat for the majority of the latter half of the four-day match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could set only a three-run target and Sindh completed the win, by now turned into a cakewalk, with a Khurram Manzoor boundary on the third ball.

Abrar took five wickets for only 29 runs and this was his third five-wicket haul in four innings. During the haul, he reached the 50-wicket milestone in what is only his ninth match. Abrar has had a dream start to the current first-class season. He joined Sindh in the third round (at the end of Pakistan’s T20I series against England) and immediately made an impact, returning two five-wicket hauls against Southern Punjab and finishing with 11 wickets in the match. He took five for 94 and six for 100 as the match ended in a draw.

Though Abrar’s stock delivery is leg-break, he is quite unusual in comparison to other leg-spinners as he uses his finger rather than wrist. He delivers googly and flipper with his fingers, making it difficult for batters to pick him.

“I assess the batters and conditions when I am bowling. While fielding, I keep a close look on how the batters are using their feet, which areas are they trying to target and what is their strength,” Abrar told PCB Digital after bowling his team to their first first-class win of the season.

Abrar made his first-class debut for Sindh in the 2020-21 season and quickly announced his arrival, finishing as the third highest wicket-taker for his team. In the next season, though he played only two matches, he recorded two five-fers and finished with 17 wickets. What made him standout was his average, which was the best for any bowler that season with more than 10 wickets.

As he has matured as a spinner, the deployment of his googly has become more effective. “Previously, my googly used to slide down the leg,” he says, “I worked on landing it in the right areas and that has reaped rewards.”

One of the most critical aspects of leg-spin bowling in first-class cricket is to choose the right moment to bowl the googly. So, when does Abrar know when to unleash it? “You have to set up a batter with leg-breaks before you bowl a googly,” he responds. “The set-up is the most critical bit in leg-spin bowling. My googly is a secret weapon and I have to deploy it only when the time is right.

Despite playing only two matches this season, Abrar leads the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy bowling charts with 20 scalps at a phenomenal average of 17.

Abrar recently received a maiden national call-up when England toured Pakistan for historic seven T20Is in September-October. Though, he was called up as a back-up option, the experience of sharing the dressing room with the best cricketers in Pakistan and being guided by one of the best coaches, widened his knowledge that is bound to help him as his career progresses.

“It was a great pleasure and honour for me to share the dressing room with some of the greatest contemporary cricket stars. The presence of Saqi bhai [Saqlain Mushtaq, head coach] in the capacity of the head coach helped me a lot. We discussed plans and the art of bowling spin. I am sure that the time I spent with the national side will help me in becoming a better leg-spinner.”

He hopes of donning Pakistan colours soon – in all three format, but until that happens, Abrar will continue to hone his skills in whites for Sindh.

“Playing first-class wicket is very important for a bowler,” he says when asked about the importance of playing the format. “The batters attach a very high value to their wickets here and you have to work extraordinarily hard to get them out.”

Sindh play their next match against Balochistan from 21 October at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

This kid is a gem, and im really excited about him.

This Kid can throw Shadab Khan out of the team because this kid is actually taking wickets in first class wicket. If he takes wickets in all formats and performs for Pakistan, Shadab's place in the team can become in danger.

Nope. Shadab is a good spinner and an improving bat with elite fielding. He's a core player of the LOI side.

Abrar will be more used in the Test side. Shadab is an allrounder so they could play a mystery spinner in Abrar alongside Shadab in spin friendly conditions. Either way, it's far too early to be even worth talking about it considering he hasn't even made his International debut yet. And it would be really great to have another reliable spinner so scrubs like Usman Qadir aren't played.
