[VIDEOS] Talent Spotter : Mohammad Huraira

Good knock in a pressure game. 51.
If he works hard and gets luck - anything is possible. We will start to see more talent in a few years. Pakistan domestic cricket is clearly on the rise due to this new format. The days of meaningless matches between banks where the structure was full of poor players expecting the organisations to provide a living are gone. Good, hard, competitive cricket. That’s what we are getting. Clearly, a better scouting system is also in play. Now sort out the pitches and I am confident Pakistan can do great.

So much promise - Just hope Pakistan selectors keep a good eye on him

he does like hitting ramp cuts, which is an interesting approach to tackle the short ball outside off for an opener.

Yeah he looked pretty good at that. Technique is not good however when he is pulling a short ball.

It is a Pakistani wide problem and I hope the drop-in pitches can tackle some of these problems.

And why not promote him to the national team now that Abid is sadly sidelined?

Remember a lot of Pakistan greats made their international debuts at similar or younger ages. We need to use talent as the deciding factor and not over analyse. If they are good enough, they are old enough. Do not think what happened to Musa or Naseem Shah. All that proved was that they weren’t ready and if they don’t recover from that experience, then they are not good enough. I keep hearing this rubbish that they were destroyed by being exposed to international cricket too soon. No they were exposed as not being good enough ‘yet’.

I repeat - if you are good enough- then you are old enough. Is there a better opener then Huraira currently?? Probably not. Hence promote him. If he is good enough, he will perform. If not, then he won’t of may need a couple more years. Graham Gooch got a pair in his debut. Let’s not be scared of him failing. Try him out.

I would play azhar opening and bring in Saud Shakeel he deserves his opportunity before Hurraira.

Looked good again today.

Confidence is obviously very high at the moment after his triple-hundred.

As others have mentioned, he needs some A tours abroad and preferably outside Asia to improve and work on additional areas of his game.

Or just throw him in the deep end based on him being good enough?? Why not? Better then blinkin Azhar Ali and more futuristic then Fawad. If you good enough - you old enough.

should just look to avoid pulling the ball, if its outside off he can ramp it, otherwise leave it. wont have a massive impact on his strike rate, and shouldn't effect his rhythm if he is good at leaving.

Top run-getter in QeA - and this is his debut season!

There was big opposition to the new regional cricket system from many quarters. The new system is showing results already.Younger players are coming through now.It is going to get better.

There was big opposition to the new regional cricket system from many quarters. The new system is showing results already.Younger players are coming through now.It is going to get better.

Opposition was from average cricketers for whom an easy living has been taken away. That is a sad side effect of the new setup but a necessary one. The old system produced talent by accident rather then by design. The cricket was poor quality, not competitive, played on flat tracks, and no one cared about the results.
We won’t see the benefits of the new system until the next batch of players comes through and the current remaining deadwood disappears.

You can tell the matches are of higher quality now.

Definitely. And 100% more competitive. Teams want to win. Gone are the days of an easy salary as long as you are in the team. New young players have come in. A lot of deadwood gone (the rest will follow). The people who complain are naturally the average players whose livelyhood has been lost. Also, some of the older players who livelyhood is about to go. And some of the players of the past (Miandad etc) because their opportunities of making a quick buck in this revamped, more streamlined structure have reduced when compared to the 'jobs for the boys' policy the banks offered. Money talks. We have to ignore the whingers.

One little correction though.

In old system, especially in recent years, pitches were not flat. There were mostly green mambas especially on the Punjab side.

A lot of bowlers used to have Malcom Marshall type bowling averages.

Huraira has already done a lot more than what Babar did before his selection to the national team. Babar still has only 3 FC tons ( excluding his 5 test centuries ) .

If the system is allowed to develop, we could have the potential for a new golden age for PK cricket. We haven't produced a crop of young batsman since the early 2000s and in poor system with poor wickets, those guys failed. If we have anything resembling decent organisation, we have anything up 8 young potential batsman. We only need 2 of these guys to come through and we are in business

Selection to Pakistan cricket is not an exam where one has to achieve some passing marks and average to get selected , all you need is to judge the right talent, technique and temperament back by runs and performance and Huraira checks all the dots. Babar had couple of centuries including a double century when selected for Pakistan team, Huraira has already done more than him.

Please please please let this guy play another full domestic season or two instead of rushing him to the national side

Karachi, 27 December 2021: Northern’s Mohammad Huraira has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee for a level 1 offence for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during the ongoing pink-ball final of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 fixture against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Stadium, Karachi.

Huraira in the 22nd over of the innings before being out LBW by the umpire showed his bat and expressed his disappointment before leaving the crease. As such, he was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

On-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Faisal Khan Afridi levelled the charge on the batter, who accepted the sanction proposed by match-referee Nadeem Arshad.

Huraira now the top run-getter in the QeA Trophy - only his first season. Has gone past Sahibzada Farhan who has already batted twice in this game.

Definitely not ready for white ball cricket yet. Does not have a power game but should certainly be considered for the test team.

hes a potential test opener, needs to be adequately compensated to keep him away from adapting his game to try to become a t20 player.

There is so much to like about Hurraira's batting. People have questioned his short ball technique (I.e. he either plays the ramp shot, or he ducks) bit there were a couple of tasty pulls in his innings today. He's also a ballsy so and so, because he played some audacious offside lofted shots and smashed Mohammed Waseem down the ground today.

However, there were a couple of areas he needs to improve on. He sometimes goes chasing the ball, and channel bowlers could knick him out. He also, for someone his age, is still learning how to construct an innings.
For instance, he's a more sensible batter than Haider (Although Haider has a much higher ceiling), but both of these lads need to bat, bat and bat to gain that assuredness that comes with experience. Case in point is a Fawad Alam, who has half the talent compared to both Hurraira and Haider, but understands his own strengths and weaknesses and thus plays in an assured way. The day both Haider and Hurraira play with that level of tranquillity, is the day they'll do something at International level.

Until then, they both need at least one more full season of QEA trophy cricket, and hopefully a county deal as well. Should absolutely not be considered for the national team. Because rushing these will impact their development, and it's not about the next 12 months. But the next 12 years.

He has to play T20 to develop his game. I don't think play only the longer version will help. In many ways he reminds me of Hameed, a player who hasn't developed any part of his game in the last 4 years.

I saw his innings today and he was excellent and if he gets into the gym, he will go up another notch. At times today it was like watching Prithvi Shaw bat

i agree, there definitely is things he needs to work on, his play against the short ball whilst better today definetely had a bit of pre meditation to it. this is good in that it shows he realised he needs to tackle different bowlers differently, but it does not answer the question about whether he has the ability to play the short ball against test level bowlers, i.e. when its not telegraphed.

maybe i didnt communicate my point well enough. i dont have a problem with him playing t20, but i dont want him to be in a situation where if he doesnt succeed in t20 he starts to adapt his game with triggers, and greater pre meditation which seeps into his red ball game for financial reasons.

i see the hameed comparison in his stance and his low hands but hameed in his wildest dreams wouldnt attempt straight driving quicks like imran khan over their heads, or the way he deposited taj wali for a six in his triple hundred. hurairas intent and positivity mark his as substantially different to hameed imo.

Unfair to judge him on his debut game on a disgracefully slow pitch

I think he will get into Pakistan team in next 3 years in tests however he isn't suited to t20s.

Bit of a quiet start to his 50 over career.

Scores of 18, 41, 28 and 37 so far for Northern in the Pakistan Cup. Getting in but not converting these starts.

Awarded a PCB Emerging central contract for 2022/23.

I hope his test debut happens in the next year - if he does well this FC season, get Huraira in.

Think he’ll improve in the shorter formats too. Has the shot making ability

Fourth first-class 100 for Huraira in QeA22

Northern batters Mohammad Huraira and Faizan Riaz struck sparkling centuries against Balochistan to help their side reach 347 for three on the first day of the third round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Huraira struck his fourth career century in 14th match when he was dismissed after scoring 169, while 34-year-old Faizan was batting on 100 – his 15th century in 89 matches – as the two batters added 172 runs for the third wicket. Huraira struck 23 fours and a six in a 223-ball innings, while Faizan has faced 119 balls off which 14 have been converted into fours.

Huraira had earlier added 109 runs for the first wicket with Abdul Faseeh (34) and 34 runs for the second wicket with Umar Amin (22).

My son played against Faizan in the summer and didn't think much of him.

Plays the ball later which is normally a sign of a good batter... however it seems from the videos that he doesn't pick the length early like a more naturally talented batter.

Exactly what i observed too , doesn't seems to have quick reflexes to pick the length earlier , can struggle big time against genuine 140k pacers in International cricket.

Mohammad Huraira finishes the day (Day 1 Round 9 QeA) unbeaten on 170 against Sindh, hitting his sixth first-class 100 - The right-handed Huraira has so far hit 22 fours and one six in his 170 (279 balls).

This lads stats are slightly misleading.

Thing about Hurraira is that he seems to get big hundreds rather than consistently getting in. I appreciate that he’ll miss out at times as he opens, but he needs to show more consistently against the new ball. I think he needs another full domestic season before we start mentioning a test call up

He won't be picked yet because highly unlikely they will drop Imaam,Saud,Azhar but definitely in the future he will be picked.

shows positive intent against spin, should be azhar alis eventual replacement.

I would give him a test debut this domestic season . No point in persisting with oldies like Azhar Ali. let him open with Abdullah.

20 FC games & average of 63 is impressive, if he maintains this for another 20 games then he should be challenging Shafiq & Imam

It’s impressive how he keeps piling up the runs and doing it so consistently. Surely going to get a chance in Tests fairly soon.

There is no camparison hurraira is opener while agha is middle order batsmen .His competition is imam, abdullah shafiq and shan masood

If he can open in test cricket, he can surely bat in the middle order. Opening the most difficult job in test cricket. It's the other way round in LOIs.

Doesnt matter, infact Hurraira is the best young player of spin in Pakistan. He might even do better in the middle.

We need good players of spin in our batting lineup, no matter the format. If he is good against spinners and can handle pace, unlike his uncle, he’ll do well in international cricket. From what I have seen from him as off now, he needs to work on his power hitting. It’s all good and dandy at this level to score runs through soft hands and manoeuvring the field but in the international setup you are likely to face excellent fielding sides who will put a squeeze on you. To counter that, he’ll need some power hitting skills. Aside from that, he’ll also need some improvisation in his game. You need paddle shot, and reverse sweep in your armoury to disturb bowlers rhythm.

he has excellent potential as a number 3, bats fairly quickly, plays pace ok, plays spin really well. will have the experience of coming in early too, which is vital for a Pakistan number 3.

i think he's only been dismissed between 50 and 100 once this season, with one century and two one-fifties. that's the kind of conversion you need to see at first class level be a match winner.

He's passed the first test which is putting up consistent numbers in domestic cricket.

Now we need an A tour to a SENA country, or WI on one of their bouncier tracks at Barbados or St Lucia, to see how he copes with sideways movement and the ball buzzing around his head.

A tours should be the bridge between domestics and internationals.

if only the PCB were logical, dont think theres any proper A tours lined up at the moment. should have at least 4 or 5 FC a games a season, to keep young players developing.

20 FC games with those stats is enough for a test cap.

Get him in the side during a home series.

He has to play the shorter games to develop his shot range. He looked nervous and phased but needs to play this format for financial security and the development of his game

Yes. Gone are the days where you could be a test format specialist. A world class batsman needs to know how and when to up the ante. Even tests aren’t played at a snail’s pace by the top sides today.

At the very least batsmen play 2 of t20s, tests and ODIs. So in any case he will need to learn one of the shorter formats. How he goes about it is on him. You don’t have to regress into a legside slogger like Umar Akmal did after a stunning test debut.

Beastly numbers in FC cricket so far with average of 63 and 6 100s in 20 matches with really good conversion rate. SR of 65 depicting that he remains pro active and has safe run scoring shots available on most occasions. His temperament was already a stand out thing when he played quality knock at U19 level vs Afghanistan in quarter final of the U19 WC.
