Full name: Mohammad Ilyas

Born: 21st March, 1999, Peshawar

Major teams: Pakistan Emerging Team, Peshawar Region Under 19s, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-19s, Peshawar Under-16s, Peshawar Under-19s, Peshawar Region

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right arm medium-fast

Height: 5ft 9in

Interest in Cricket

I was born in a village near Peshawar and like many others, developed an interest in the game and started off with tape-ball cricket. But in all honesty, my elder brother, Saeed-ur-Rehman drove me towards cricket as he was enthusiastic about it. I used to watch him and some seniors in my school playing the game and that really had an effect on me as well. He did face some criticism from others in my family who were not happy that I had been pushed into cricket instead of pursuing education. I then started playing hard-ball cricket at the age of 11 in Peshawar Mazullah Khan Cricket Academy in 2011.

Disappointment in failing to qualify for the PCB-PEPSI Cricket Stars Under-16 for 3 years

As there was no Under-13 cricket in those days, I had no option but to try out for the Under-16s program run by the PCB in 2011 which was a chance I took as I was desperate to play good quality cricket at an early age. But it was not to be, and the same disappointment hit me again in 2012 where I failed to impress the selectors in the same trials. The situation in 2013 was worse as the PCB-PEPSI Cricket Stars Under-16 trials did not take place at all. In 2014, my luck changed as I was selected for the Imran Khan Talent Hunt program. Good performances in this program finally allowed me to find a place in the Peshawar Under-16s and I participated in the PCB-PEPSI Cricket Stars Under-16 Two Day Tournament in 2014 where in 3 matches I took 8 wickets at an average of 23.60.

Proud of my NCA shirt

When I used to meet some of the senior players who had played Under-16 before, I noted that they had shirts with the word NCA written on the back. I knew this shirt could not be bought so I wanted to find out how I could get this shirt, so my coach told me that this was given to the players who were trained at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore and that I needed to work extremely hard to get there. I used that as a goal to motivate myself and in that year, 2014, was part of 46 top Under-16 players who were selected to train in the academy. I also knew from that point that I had to work doubly hard to get ahead of any of the other top performers and that became an obsession for me as I started to work in the gym and also on my fielding, in addition to my normal training.

Starting Under-19 cricket at the Inter-District and Inter-Region Levels for Peshawar in 2016/17

The success at Under-16 level really helped me understand what I needed to do in the future to get to the top but tougher tests were waiting for me in 2015. This was the year when I first played for Peshawar Under-19s in the Inter-District Under-19 Tournament where I just took 2 wickets. But in the next season in 2016/17, my performances were excellent. A lot of the credit goes to some advice from my seniors and coaches who told me to work hard and not be satisfied with just 2 or 3 wickets but to aim for more wickets. In the Inter-Region Under-19 Three Day Tournament, I took 25 wickets in 5 matches which included three five-wicket hauls also, then in the two-day Regional Inter-District Under-19 Tournament I picked up 9 wickets in 3 games. Then in the One-Day Inter-Region Under-19 Tournament I took 12 wickets in 7 matches. There was one disappointment which was that I could not be selected for the 2016 edition of the ACC Under-19s Asia Cup even though my performances were good and most of my friends were convinced that I would be selected.

Phenomenal success at the Under-19 Regional and District Levels in 2017/18

The disappointment of not playing for Pakistan Under-19s in the Asia Cup was now in the past and I got myself busy with the next season. This season proved to be even more phenomenal for me as I took 26 wickets in 5 matches in the Inter-Region Under-19 Three Day Tournament, but my 21 wickets in just 2 matches during the two-day Inter-District Under-19 Tournament was an amazing experience and I did feel like I was at the top of the world. Despite such good performances, I was not included in the 2017 ACC Under-19s Asia Cup which was a disappointment but that just made me work harder for the coming season.

Batting against Shaheen Shah Afridi

During the Inter-Region Under-19 Three Day Tournament in 2017/18, we were playing against FATA and I went to bat at the end with Shaheen Shah Afridi bowling to me. My coach had told me that you can hit any ball you like except the bouncer from Shaheen as that was really quick and difficult to hit. But, I did not pay attention to that and decided to take him on, which was a mistake as he hit me all over my body including my head but I refused to leave the ground as the team needed me to score runs and I guess I wanted to prove to my coach that I could bat as well. I helped the team to a good score in both innings and my team, Peshawar, also won the match but Shaheen’s bouncers still remain in my memory.

Experience of playing First-Class cricket

I have a great interest in representing Pakistan in Test cricket as I feel that is the truest test of any player and so the chance to play First-Class cricket was one that I gladly accepted with both hands. My debut was against Islamabad where I managed to take 10 wickets in the match and as one can imagine, I was elated and I received praise from all my seniors.

Wicket-taking delivery

My most effective and favourite delivery is the in-swinger and this has been the case since 2011 and I don’t like to use the bouncer or short delivery too much as I have been advised by some of my seniors. My average pace as measured in the emerging players camp in 2016 was around the 130KpH mark and I believe I can take it to the 135-137KpH mark

Role models

My favourite bowler and one that I admire and try and emulate is Mohammad Asif. Amongst the non-Pakistanis, Jimmy Anderson is the bowler I follow. I always watch videos of his bowling and even when he is playing against Pakistan, I am looking forward to seeing him take wickets although I get a lot of anger from my friends for saying that, but the fact is that I do admire his bowling.

Being picked for the Sixth Team in the Pakistan Super League

I am absolutely delighted to have been picked for the PSL’s Sixth Team. I will be part of a squad which will have some big names. I have only met Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik once and don’t really know them that well, so you can understand how excited I am about the chance of sharing a dressing room with such great cricketers. In fact, I have spoken to a number of people who say that Shoaib Malik is a great teacher and I am really looking forward to working with him in the PSL. Amongst the Pakistan bowlers, I will have so much to learn from the likes of Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Irfan. So, for me this is a great opportunity and I cannot wait for this tournament to start. Hopefully, if I can get a chance to show my skills, I could get noticed by Pakistan selectors and get to play for Pakistan.

Hat-trick and outstanding performances in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Karachi

Being selected to represent the Pakistan Emerging side was great news but then to take 5 wickets recently including a hat-trick in my first game which was against the UAE was the icing on the cake. To do so well in front of our own crowds on our home grounds was really something special. I suppose my in-swingers did the trick with all batsmen being right-handers giving me an advantage too.

One thing I like about him is that at least he's honest about his pace. No outrageous claims.

With average pace of 130 and 5-9 in height , not a very exciting prospect.

Next should be Talent spotter of syed touseeq shah

This was almost 3 years ago when Ilyas was 15-16.

If you see the latest footage of his FC debut season you will find that he is borderline Fast medium capable of touching 140 kph mark.

With right training and coaching the teenager can add 5 to 8 kph pace.

Hasan Ali has similar height aswell.

Abdullah719 watched him bowl in Khi in nets and he posted that Ilyas looked brisk.

Seems like a Decent Bowler. However we badly need more Batsmen, How about spotting some decent new Batsmen. Otherwise we will be stuck with the likes of Asad Shafiq and Shan Masood.

Looking forward to watchng him at PSL4.

Speeds not shown consistently during his overs. The balls they showed the speeds for - he clocked 134, 132, 133, 137, 136 and 132kph.

Pretty good for a 20 year old. Could easily get his average pace up 5 km's in the next year or 2.

Muhammad Ilyas took 5 for 29 against Pakistan Navy in the semi-final of Patron's Trophy Grade-II.

So far in the final of Patron's Trophy Grade-II he has taken 2 wickets for 72 runs.

Ilyas has been picked for the Belfast Titans in the Euro T20 Slam.

Should he have been preferred for the World Cup instead of Mohammad Hasnain?

He is a decent talent but for the white ball I think Haris Rauf had a bigger claim with certain skills really suited to modern day LOI cricket.

Decent talent, was getting better with each game in PSL as well along with pace touching late 130s and 140 kph. Still remember that deliver to Kamran Akmal in his opening spell for MS which uprooted his off stump was a beauty.

Needs to work really hard an be more consistent.

Not pacy and a bit too short for fast bowler, good enough for domestic cricket and T20 leagues, not made for internationals.

Not a good bowler

What's the basis of your statement.

In 5 FC matches he has 33 wickets @15.90, 3-5wicket hauls and 3 4wicket hauls and a ten wicket match. Strike rate is 28.

I would say he might have a future in Pakistan cricket playing test cricket in Asian conditions. He is perfectly suited, he is accurate, can reverse it a lot and is quicker than what many may think. The speed gun may say 135kph, but he has that Hasan Ali type effect.

Tall with decent pace doesn't mean good fast bowler.

Bowling well in today's game - 1 over so far KP

Andy Flower on Mohammad Ilyas

"Ilyas has a lot of potential; he has all the attributes of fast bowling. He can bowl a very good yorker, out swing and slower ball. I have full trust in his abilities.”

He's doesn't have much going for him. I don't think Multan should invest too much in him and look at better talent

Would be very effective if he can gain a few clicks of pace. not much even 4-5 kph can make a difference

Looks like aaron summers

Excellent tournament for him.

1 wicket in today's game as well

Don't think that there is anyone on this forum who rates him. He literally manages to trundle through all the domestic games and manages to get some lucky wickets on his way. Really disappointing that a bowler like Dilbar has to sit on the bench for this guy.

But he is taking wickets so we can't blame the management.

Though looks ordinary but he is an effective bowler.

He has bowl much better than dilbar in this tournament. Dilbar was terrible and was struggling big time on these flat wickets .

Andy flower was highly impressed from ilyas .i don't what you are on about

Aslong as he takes wickets and has good economical doesnt matter if he bowls slow

Can be good option for test .He is someone who has good control on new ball and can also bowl long spell .

Very interesting case, never looks special but consistently takes 2 wickets at good economy.

Rauf doesnt do anything, naseem seems a bit injury prone atm. We need a consistent 2 wicket bowler with good econ like an in form Amir, to back Shaheen and Shadab. This guys looks good for the role

30 off 20 in the One Day Cup today, with one over reading 44426.

Extremely underrated cricketer on PP, always in the wickets, very accurate, and handy with the bat.

He has some bad days, as all bowlers in T20s do, but this lad is a decent bowler.

A yard quicker than he looks and bowls with intelligence.

Seriously needs to rethink his bowling if he is getting tonked by Sarfaraz in death.

Hasnt impressed at all - not sure if he is needed at Karachi?

You'd think he'd never played T20 cricket before the way he has been bowling.

The problem is some of these lads do well in 1 season in the PSL and they think they have made it. The lad is bowling absolute pies.

AFT Southern Punjab fast bowler Mohammad Ilyas recorded figures of 15-5-50-5 on Day 2 of Round 3 of QeA

I must say, I have been impressed with the amount of runs he's gotten, if he works on it, he could be a really good bolwing AR option.

Great opportunity for Ilyas now

Shahnawaz Dahani has been ruled out of PSL 8 due to a fractured finger in his bowling hand.

Mohammad Ilyas has been brought in as his replacement.

He was decent under Shan Masood’s captaincy

That last over against Faheem could give him nightmares for a long time. Just hope he can get his confidence back.

Peshawar Region's Mohammad Ilyas impressed with his bowling on the first day, claiming 4 wickets for 61 runs in his 22 overs against the Karachi Region Whites.

During the third round of the President's Trophy 2023-24. Mohammad Ilyas delivered a standout performance, claiming figures of 3/13 in just 6 overs for SBP against SNGPL on day 1 of the match's first innings. His exceptional bowling display demonstrated skill and precision, adding value to SBP's efforts in the tournament.

On day 2 of the third round of the President's Trophy 2023-24, Mohammad Ilyas of SBP secured figures of 4/77 in 17 overs against SNGPL.

He is working hard in domestic cricket, but he still needs more grinding in that arena before he can make it to the Pakistan Test side in the future.

SNGPL defeated SBP by 6 wickets, Still SBP's Mohammad Ilyas managed to secure match figures of 6/116 ( 4/77, 2/39).

Despite the match outcome, He demonstrated remarkable skill with bowling. As a young player, his performance highlights potential for continued improvement and development in red ball cricket.
