Will Smith wins Oscar for best actor and apologises to Academy for hitting Chris Rock – Oscars 2022!

Chris Rock just came out and introduced the best documentary feature. He told some jokes. And then Will Smith came on stage and apparently punched him in the face. And then he (the guy who is supposed to be the best actor frontrunner) screamed “Keep my wife’s name out of your ****ing mouth”. Twice. What the hell is going on?

Was this for real? If it was Wow! Wills totally out of line and should be condemned

You cant assault someone like that Esp at the oscars

There are many diff ways Will Smith could have handled this. Having a presser after the Oscars or having a private word with Chris Rock or even bringing this up when he won his award.

Will Smith lost the moral high ground the moment he attacked the man.

If this was not a fake moment to get the oscars in the news then how could a person assault another person and not be removed from the venue and then get an award.

It smells to fishy.

Cant assault a man like that. He should apologise at the very atleast, otoh Chris Rock really was so calm

Wonder how Smith would have been if Gervais was hosting the Oscars

This was so pathetic. Shame on you, Will.

They should have escorted him out of the building.

(And this is coming from a Will Smith fan.)

Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face on stage at the Oscars after the comic made a joke about the actor's wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

"Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2," he said, in an apparent reference to her shaved hairdo - which is a result of the hair loss condition alopecia.

Smith walked on stage and struck Rock before returning to his seat and shouting: "Keep my wife's name out of your [expletive] mouth."

He later apologised on stage.

"I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my all my fellow nominees," he said during a tearful acceptance speech for best actor.

The star picked up the first Oscar of his career for playing the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.

"Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things."

Rock's joke referred to 1997 film GI Jane, in which Demi Moore played the title role with a severe buzzcut.

The comedian looked stunned in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but told the audience: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

The Los Angeles Police Department later told Variety that Rock had "declined to file a police report" following the event.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organises the Oscars, tweeted that it "does not condone violence of any form".

Here in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, there was a shocked reaction from journalists to Smith's run-in with Rock.

Reporters had been taking part in the traditional backstage press conference, where the winners come to answer questions after delivering their acceptance speeches.

But attention suddenly turned to our overhead screens and what was going on at the ceremony, as it became clear something serious was kicking off.

At first, it had seemed like a joke or some kind of set-up. Smith even appeared to laugh at first after Rock delivered his line about his wife looking like GI Jane.

Jada looked annoyed, but at this point it was still assumed this was all part of some kind of pre-planned routine.

Doubt began to creep in when Smith rose from his seat and hit Rock on the stage. Of course, both these guys are veterans of film and television, and would know how to carry out a fake stage slap. Except, everyone was starting to think, it didn't look that fake.

By the time Smith was sitting back in his seat and shouting to Rock to "keep my wife's name out your [expletive] mouth", it was clear this was no sketch. A professional like Smith would know better than to drop the F-bomb on stage during a live TV broadcast.

Viewers at home didn't hear the swearing. Broadcast network ABC had cut the live feed to avoid offending viewers at home.

Throughout the altercation, there was complete silence in the winners' room. Academy staffers looked just as shocked as the journalists did. "I thought they were doing a bit," one said to his colleague.

Rock, meanwhile, looked visibly shaken. But, realising he'd just made Oscars history, he made light of the situation, commenting: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

Much like previous Oscars that were defined by their viral moments - such as Ellen's group selfie or the best picture winner mix-up in 2017 - this will now forever be the Oscars where Will Smith punched Chris Rock.

Pinkett Smith first talked about her hair loss struggle in an episode of her Facebook chat show, Red Table Talk, back in 2018.

She said: "I've been having issues with hair loss. And it was terrifying when it first started."

The Girls Trip star said she first suspected she had alopecia after "handfuls of hair" came loose in the shower.

"I was just like, 'Oh my God, am I going bald?' It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear," she explained. "That's why I cut my hair and continue to cut it."

All the winners and nominees
Red carpet fashion in pictures
After the incident, Rock handed over the best documentary prize, which was the reason he was on stage.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, a tearful Smith needed to be "pulled aside and comforted" by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry during an advert break.

Presenting the next section, Sean "Diddy" Combs said: "Will and Chris, we're going to solve that like family. Right now we're moving on with love."

It was not the first time Rock has made a joke about Pinkett Smith at the Academy Awards. He hosted the 2016 event, when she was among the stars who boycotted the ceremony due to a lack of diversity in the nominations.

That year, he said: "Jada Pinkett Smith boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties - I wasn't invited!"

Other winners at Sunday's ceremony included Jessica Chastain, who picked up best actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye; Jane Campion, who won best director for The Power of the Dog; and Apple TV film Coda, which was named best picture.

Best supporting actress went to Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, while Troy Kotsur won best supporting actor for Coda, which also picked up best adapted screenplay.

Sci-fi epic Dune won six awards in total including technical categories including best visual effects and best cinematography.

Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world. Making this film, I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the most strongest, most delicate people I've ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses who played Venus and Serena.

I'm being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know, to do what we do, you've got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you've got to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you've got to smile, you've got to pretend like that's OK. What I loved was, Denzel [Washington] said to me a few moments ago, he said, 'At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you.'

I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. That's what I want to do. I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love and care and concern.

I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award. It's not about winning an award for me. It's about being able to shine a light on all of the people - Tim [White, producer] and Trevor [White, producer] and Zach [Baylin, writer] and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of King Richard, and Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family.

Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.

And my mother… a lot in this moment is really complicated for me but to my mother, she didn't want to come out. She's had her knitting crew who she's in Philly watching with. Being able to love and care for my mother, my family, my wife… I'm taking up too much time… Thank you for this honour. Thank you for this moment and thank you on behalf of Richard and Oracene and the entire Williams family. Thank you. I hope the Academy invites me back. Thank you.

It seemed staged but it’s hilarious how the word ‘assault’ is being thrown around, what a bunch of pansies lol

Chris Rock had it coming from way back. You don’t talk take cheap shots at a mans family, he deserved to be slapped, but in the moment maybe Will Smith should have avoided it live on stage and beat him up in a dark alley or something, too many morons get away with way too much these days

It Chris said “he’s already like this March imagine him in august” that would have been hilarious.

Chris should have slapped him back tbh. Can’t even take a light joke. Why wasn’t he thrown out? Btw Will joined in the laughter after the joke.

https://youtu.be/myjEoDypUD8

Do you think it’s a light joke when it comes to making fun of certain conditions of your family member? going after the alopecia for women is a bit of a low blow. Social media has made people trigger happy so I respect Chris for saying it in the open, unfortunately he thought he’d be protected by the ceremony though

To me it looks staged, chris knew the slap was coming, he even overacted afterwards mentioning documentary instead of award to act like he was confused and dazed. Will gave a whole speech about protecting your family right after. No security jumped in before after or during, Oscars has had its reputation go from glitzy a list award show to being an event no one really cares about, this defo has people talking again.

If it isnt staged then, it highlights the warped realities of "woke" celebrities' in the crowd, applauding and condoning violence...

There’s a rumoured match between the two at wrestlemania 38 or I think a segment involving the two at least

Chris Rock handled this brilliantly. He’s a comedian, he pokes fun at people and it’s not meant cruelly. The joke about Jada not being invited to the Oscars a few years ago was even better.

Smith and his Mrs have got a long history of uptight behaviour and not having a sense of humour about themselves — imo this incident was real.

Tbh…Will’s family is weird and disjointed. No sympathy for them.

Will’s acceptance speech was pitifully embarrassing., the man seems to think he is some kind of modern day Moses.
A deeply disturbed character.

Perhaps, the main thing he should be disappointed about is how it overshadowed his well deserved Oscar win. My all time favourite performance of his was taking on the role of Ali, that was incredible, if the movie came out now it would do insane numbers

Yeah the reaction of chris doesnt seem genuine for someone whos just been slapped Youd be more shocked angry dazed like you said He wasnt holding his face like you would if youd been hit

And Surely Will wouldve been escorted out or something as a reaction

If it is real Together with his strangely acceptance speech youf suggest Wills got some real issues that need addressing

Will Smith has physically responded to a fan/journalist before as well

One could only imagine how difficult this guy may be to work with on set and how many altercations have been swept under the carpet. He doesn’t seem to be a guy that thinks twice about the repercussions of his actions before going ahead with them.

And society is become very sensitive during the 21st century. People easily get offended by jokes....

Pathetic stuff by will smith and that to at an oscars where he won an award

I think the joke was a poor one and in bad taste - the one a few years back about Jada's Oscar invite was hilarious, but this one making fun of a health condition, though a good joke, is quite a sensitive thing. This isn't a Jimmy Carr Netflix special, it's the Oscars broadcast on live TV to the whole world. Besides, the Smiths have been going through a, shall we say, rocky patch recently.

Having said that, the reaction from Will Smith was completely ridiculous. Unbelievable. He was even laughing through gritted teeth initially, and he should have continued to do so, let the moment move on and then you can have it out with Chris after the show.

But to do what he did on live TV is totally unacceptable, totally ruined the entire atmosphere of the show and overshadowed all the cinema they were there to celebrate. Will anyone even remember that Will Smith himself, let alone all the others, won an Oscar? No.

To be fair to Chris, he handled it amazingly, many would have given one back.

I wonder if Ricky Gervais has said the joke, what would've Will done?

Ricky said a number of far worse and insulting (even if they were truthful) jokes a couple of years ago at the Golden Globes, but no one was idiotic enough to walk up to the stage to slap him, then cuss him out when they got back to their seat.

Will lives with no regrets :)))

The Smiths are the weirdest Hollywood family.

Will seems like a deeply disturbed dude. I dont believe in the whole selling your soul to the devil or lizard people to make in Hollywood conspiracy theories, but, if ever its proven true then its likely Will is top of the list.

He’s a bully, and people will overlook this behaviour because he is one of those guys who people will love no matter what. Unlike Johnny Depp who has been excommunicated and isolated even though he is probably a loving and gentle soul

How can he act like nothings happened? Surely this isnt real and a prank

Whats chris said since?

Uber charismatic men like The Rock, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt (to some extent) will get away with so many things such as casual racism, misogynistic comments, cheating and adultery, angry outbursts, cussing and bullying because people love them so much.

If guys like Depp, Leonardo, Bale etc do the same thing, all hell will break loose on social media and the cancel culture+women’s rights activists in full flow!

I see what you did there, reverse racism?
Which is actually plain racism as well. I dont know why people use the term "reverse" in such cases.

Leonardo and Depp are in the same boat though aren't they with the Charisma and all, Bale is a bit of a drama queen himself. I don’t have a problem with any of these blokes apart from Dwayne who I think should stick to his old day job :)

This is sickening, can't believe what I've seen. Should have been thrown out of the building there and then.

Then his crocodile tears a the acceptance speech, OMG - such privileged people!

I thought the standard practice for these occasions is for the organizers to run the jokes by the target in advance to ensure they were cool with them before hand?

The people who were clapping at 8pm, taking a knee outside their house or have Ukranian flag on their social media profiles, are the ones who think this was real. :)

Give it a few months, they will have some sort of Boxing fight.

I know Like james said Poor Will And ontop of it all theres people backing Will like hes the victim

Chris Rock been assaulted for fs but hes the bad guy in all this

Absolutely, and it was real, they've been targets for the last 3 decades due to their weird family setup. He's just drawn more attention to himself and it will only get much worse now.

That has to be one of the worst speeches ever. Justifying what he did by invoking serenas father. Going on about how they have to put up with this and smile and accept it.

These comments coming from someone who himself was a comedian.

Than he goes on to apologies but couldnt utter an apolgy to chris rock.

Chris rock is a comedian, what do you expect he will do. Comedians make jokes picking on other celebrities or politicians.

Anyways, this will only create more jokes on Jada and it will get of hand to the point where offensive jokes are shared on social media.

Funny, how it was ok for a young will smith to make fun of Uncle phils obesity as part of comedy in the fresh prince of bel air.

2 years down the road, family guy will be posting a very offensive joke to this....

Absolutely it was real, they've been targets for the last 3 decades due to their weird family setup. He's just drawn more attention to himself and it will only get much worse now.

Dude, have a closer look it was a WWE move, hardly touched him. If he was slapped at such a strength, there would be a big mark or he would be on the floor.

They are actors, nothig more than glorified dressed up clowns or jesters. Dont take such people too seriously . lol

The 94th Academy Awards was definitely one for the history books - but it may stay in the minds of many for the wrong reason.

Despite the night seeing the first streaming-only film to win best picture, actor Troy Kotsur become the first deaf man to bag an Oscar and Ariana DeBose become the first openly queer actress of colour to take home an award - this year's ceremony is likely to be remembered for Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face.

Smith, who went on to win the best actor award for his role in King Richard, whacked the comedian after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's short haircut.

The 53-year-old then returned to his seat and shouted twice: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."

Pinkett Smith has alopecia and has openly spoken about her experience with hair loss in the past.

The moment has been met with mixed reactions online, with one describing it as the "ugliest Oscar moment ever".

Filmmaker Rob Reiner tweeted his thoughts on the incident and called for Smith to apologise.

"Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology," he wrote. "There is no excuse for what he did. He's lucky Chris is not filing assault charges.

"The excuses he made tonight were b******t."

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has come to Will Smith's defence, writing: "A man big enough to absolutely floor him, slapped him softly enough that Chris barely moved because he made fun of his wife's alopecia on a world stage."

Will Smith's youngest son, Jaden, reacted within minutes of the ceremony ending, simply saying: "And that's how we do it."

One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush condemned the incident, pointing out that both men were wrong. "They both need a breather," she wrote.

American comedian Kathy Griffin raised concerns about "who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theatres".

Rosemary's Baby actress Mia Farrow was quick to jump to Chris Rock's defence, saying: "It was just a joke."

Star Wars legend Mark Hamill described the slap as the "ugliest Oscar moment ever".

While The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organises the Oscars, didn't condemn Smith personally, it did say it "does not condone violence of any form".

Queen & Slim actress Jodie Turner-Smith reacted by saying: "I have second hand embarrassment for all involved."

After the ceremony, Kotsur spoke to Sky News about the slap saying: "Whatever happened tonight, whatever situation happened, it was personal right, and it really showed that family should be cherished no matter what the situation is."

Booker prize author Bernardine Evaristo tweeted: "Only the fifth black man in nearly 100 years to win an Oscar for male lead, and the first in 16 years, resorts to violence instead of utilising the power of words to slay Chris Rock.

"Then he claims God and Love made him do it.

Having watched it several times and going by his acceptance speach I'm pretty sure it was all just a stunt.

I'm aware people are going to say its fake etc, and that's fine if that's what they really believe. But Will Smith has just stained the greatest moment of his career. They would never be pulling a stunt like that if he was going to win the Oscar.

I know we’re all still processing this, but the way casual violence was normalised by a collective national audience will have consequences that we can’t even fathom right now.

The Academy Awards would never allow such a stunt even if fake.

Will Smith has a lot of things in his closet.

I really enjoy his acting, I am Legend is one of my all time fav movies but they are mere actors, given far too much importance in the world imo.

Will was dancing the night away with his Oscar, he doesnt seem to care. On the contrary he will now be given more roles to choose from, higher wages and will make a money from celeb combat fight too.

The Academy Awards would never allow such a stunt even if fake.

Yes that's what I initially thought too.
But i changed my mind after watching it several times.

I think it was homage to acting snd the character he played.
Did it go to far? Yes perhaps it did.
Was it difficult to view. Yes I think it was.
But I still think it was a fake..

LOL that was funny and the Smiths have open marriage and they have admitted to cheating as well.
Will Smith defended his wife's honour LoL.
Will Smith should be sued.

I'm not here to change your mind, but let's consider some things:

It was immediately clear that Jada was not amused by the gag. As well as the violence (staged or faked) that the Academy Awards would not allow, Smith was also hurling the F-Bomb. They would not allow that either on national TV.

What incentive was there for Smith to take part in a staged punch-up, at the cost of distracting attention from his night of high glory? The Best Actor Oscar is the ultimate achievement in an actor's career. The prestige, the decorum, following in the footsteps of giants, why would he take a risk to tarnish such honour?

Smith’s anger as he shouted at Rock certainly seemed 100% genuine. In the aftermath of the incident, footage shows Denzel Washington consoling Smith during an ad break, wiping away tears and of course we then saw him weeping at his acceptance speech. Kudos, if all that was staged but it's unlikely.

He then apologised to all and sundry but not Rock himself. He said: "Art imitated life; I look the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.” If all that was make-believe, he fully deserves a truck load of Oscars.

The joke about Pinkett-Smith obviously crossed a red line and its believable that this would have caused offense. Pinkett-Smith told a 2018 episode of her Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, her alopecia has caused her considerable suffering. Shae said he was shaking with fear when her hair started falling off.

Smith and Pinkett-Smith also have some previous beef with Rock, having been on the end of another Oscars ribbing by the 57-year-old in 2016. Reacting to the pair’s decision to boycott that year’s awards over a lack of diversity in the nominees.

He said "Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!” Rock also taunted Smith, saying: “It’s not fair that Will was this good [in the movie Concussion] and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West!”

I know all that isn't going to change the minds of those who are set that it wall faked for the publicity. But food for thought nonetheless.

Smith's a lucky man if Rock doesn't press charges.

Many in Rock's shoes would lodge a complaint with the police.

Wills got issues If you watch the video again he can be seen laughing at the joke initially It was his wifes reaction that led him to go up in stage

It wasnt the joke itself To hazard a guess theres stuff going on in his personal life that he cant come to terms with that led to this totally unquestionably wrong action

And his reaction afterwards was totally pathetic Crying and talking rubbish about defending his family Man sort your **** out and apologise properly He ruined the biggest night of his career with his sorry reaction

What im appalled at is the oscars reaction to this like nothing happened Smith shouldve been escorted out straightaway instead of lauded

And people like denzel checking up on him should be ashamed too

The whole thing stinks and shows what low quality of people all these celebs really are

BREAKING

The Oscars film academy has said it "condemns" Will Smith's slapping of Chris Rock at the ceremony, and has launched a formal review of the incident.

A statement said it would "explore further action and consequences" in accordance with California law, and the body's standards of conduct.

Smith slapped Rock in the face on stage after the comic made a joke about the actor's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

He went on to win the best actor Oscar.

Still going for the “real incident” interpretation btw!

On social media, some users suggest Smith's actions may have violated the Academy's code of conduct and wondered whether Smith will be asked to return his award for Best Actor, which he collected onstage shortly after slapping Rock.

The code states the Academy is "categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination", including members acting "in a manner that violates standards of decency".

It also reserves the right for the Academy board to suspend or expel those in violation of the code.

However, Hollywood insiders like actor Whoopi Goldberg have said it is unlikely that Smith will lose his award.

"We're not going to take that Oscar from him," she predicted. "There will be consequences I'm sure, but I don't think that's what they're going to do".

Smith earned the award - his first - for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, in the film King Richard.

In a tearful acceptance speech, he apologised to his fellow nominees - but not to Rock - and said "love will make you do crazy things".

I was watching and was stunned. Rock should let the LA police register the case against Smith. This Guy ( Smith ) should be behind bars and a psych evaluation should be done for his anger management. Kuddos to Rock for showing so much composure and saving the show .

It was not a bad joke, nothing bad about calling someone GI jane as Demi Moore's role was popular among movie goers .

Its a routine for comedians to make fun of the audience in Oscar.

Even if Chris Rock was at fault, there was absolutely now justification of the violence committed by Will in front of more than100 million audience.

I’ve just watched the ceremony in full and (as ever) there were barbed and harsh jokes from the various presenters throughout, at the expense of many actors and performers who were sat there just taking it.

Everyone else found their embarrassing moment in the limelight to be quite amusing. This is what happens at the Oscars.

It’s only the Smiths who didn’t join in.

If only he had the same energy for August.

If I was Chris Rock, I would have responded to Will Smith by telling him "maybe it's you who needs to keep your hair on".

What a hypocrite is this guy Will Smith , he should be given award for his performance during the accepting speech where he managed to shed tears in " love for his wife", pure acting , nothing real . Everyone knows about this open marriage.

https://indianexpress.com/article/e...exual-relationships-outside-marriage-7541036/

Will has always been gay imo.

Tupac said many year ago how he was coerced into such intimacy in his Fresh Prince days. Not my issue, his life but he reallly should open up on this and move on from Jada. Id be suprised if his kids are his own.

There is no justification for what Will Smith did. Chris Rock showed ultimate professionalism by carrying on although I think he should not have. The funny thing is Will was laughing along to the joke as well but once he saw that Jada didn't like it he switched up. The level of control she has over him is sickening.

Don't think Chris Rock's banter, joke was violent or intended to injure Jada or Will Smith. Will Smith over reacted big time and he is lucky Chris Rock didn't press charges. He could have shown his anger verbally and handled this off the record/cameras.

Will Smith has taken to Instagram to issue a public apology to Chris Rock

This is why I have no respect for legal systems in which either:

1. A complaint has to be made by the victim (allowing offenders to buy them off), or
2. A statute of limitations allows criminals to get away with it because the clock has run down.

Will Smith committed a criminal assault in plain sight.

More than that, we all understand that we face being teased if we attend a live show with a stand-up comedian. It doesn't entitle us to go an beat up the comedian if we are the butt of his jokes.

Remember Ricky Gervais' clinical takedown of Robert Downey Junior at the Golden Globes a decade ago? "Some of you will know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic, or Los Angeles County Jail".

Or his comment about certain superstars: "Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then. Allegedly."

Or about Mel Gibson's alleged anti-semitism:

"Listen I'm sure it's embarrassing for both of us. I blame the network. Mel blames....well, we all know who Mel blames".

Chris Rock didn't attack the Smith family's unconventional sex life.

He made a mild joke about Mrs Smith's hair loss. People tease me for my receding hairline all the time - I don't then go and assault them, and I certainly don't expect a free pass for doing so.

This violence showed during and after what a consummate professional Chris Rock is. The remarkable presence of mind to turn things around despite being stunned the like rest of us.

Rock must be a thoroughly decent guy. Smith is obviously a huge star who has entertained us throughout the last 30 years but has become arrogant and detached from reality.

A self centred and highly privileged individual whose private life is a shambles. Now he has come out with a grovelling apology to save face.

The decency of Rock will not make him press charges and instead he is making light of the matter.

Rock said backstage probably the only time you get hit by Muhammad Ali without leaving a scratch referring to Smith’s portrayal of the boxer in one of his films.

Wait wait wait, What is hell is going on here? Chris literally gave his cheek and leaned in to get a slap. It was all staged, but now everyone is acting like It was real.

Jada Pinkett Smith has broken her silence after the outcry over her husband slapping Chris Rock for making a joke at her expense.

In a brief post to Instagram, the actress wrote of a "season for healing" in apparent reference to the Oscars incident.

Her husband, Will Smith, was condemned by the awards organisers for hitting Rock.

He apologised on Monday, calling violence "poisonous and destructive".

The incident Sunday night happened just before Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor, when the comedian Rock was on stage to present the award for Best Documentary.

He made a quip about Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

Pinkett Smith did not comment amid the furore and public debate that ensued over the merits of Rock's joke and Smith's actions until Tuesday, posting to Instagram: "This is a season for healing and I'm here for it".

Rock has yet to comment publicly on what happened at the Oscars or Smith's apology.

However, tickets for his upcoming comedy shows have reportedly skyrocketed in Sunday's aftermath.

One live event ticketing site, TickPick, said on Monday that it sold more tickets the previous night than it did in the past month combined.

A spokesperson also told CBS that prices for an upcoming Rock show on Wednesday in Boston rose from $46 (£35.16) to $411 (£314).

More than half of all ticket sales for Rock's tour - which went on sale a month ago - came after the incident at the Oscars. The vast majority - 88% - of ticket sales for Rock's shows on the website over the last week came after the incident.

Shortly after the on-stage blow, Smith won his first ever Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

Smith referred to Mr Williams in his tearful acceptance speech, calling him a "fierce defender of his family".

On Monday, Mr Williams condemned Smith and expressed surprise that the incident had taken place.

"We don't know all the details of what happened," he told NBC through his son, Chavoita LeSane. "But we don't condone anyone hitting anyone else unless it's in self defence."

So the winners are:-

The Oscars, which is now being talked about again and making front page news.
Rock - Lots of new material for him with ticket prices for his show going up X10..

The losers, the people who buy in to it.

As Will Smith's slap at the Oscars continues to top headlines about the awards, social media users are wondering - did comedian Chris Rock wear a cheek pad?

The incident, dubbed the 'ugliest Oscar moment ever', has caused a stir online, with rumours suggesting that the slap could have been staged.

Will Smith, who went on to win the best actor award for his role in King Richard, smacked host Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's, short haircut.

What are the rumours?

One of the main images circulating online (above), is leading some people to believe that Rock wore a cheek pad on the left side of his face underneath his eye, to soften the blow.

Let's take a look at professional photos of Rock on stage that night to compare them with this image.

The first two photos taken by news agencies Associated Press and Reuters, show the moments of Rock on stage before and after the actor slapped him.

Jada Pinkett Smith breaks silence following Will Smith's Oscars slap outburst at Chris Rock

Will Smith apologises to Chris Rock for Oscars slap - 'I was out of line and I was wrong'

If you look closely, you can see that his cheeks are not raised like in the image in the tweet.

The next two images were both taken after the slap and once more, you cannot see a raised section on his left cheek or difference in colour, as shown in the tweet.

In these professionals photos, you can also see Rock has light stubble - whereas in the photo in the tweet he appears to have smooth, clean shaven skin

The final image is the original version of the photo featured in the tweet, taken by Reuters.

The photo is sized 2713px × 1793px, not 8K quality, which is sized 7,680px x 4,320px.

The image in the tweet, is a digitally-altered version of the photo above, which shows that Rock did not wear a cheek pad at the awards.

What appear to be skin tone and natural face wrinkles in the original photo were likely edited in the version on social media.

Since the dramatic event at the awards, the 53-year-old Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star apologised to Rock, calling his actions "inexcusable".

California should do what it does best, ignore black on black crime; oh wait.

Will Smith must be stripped off his Oscar. The same users here saying he did right are supporting violence, when in other threads condone violence (Russia).

To the extent the major news in the past few days has been Will Smith’s slap, but yet many died around the world, inc Yemen.

The power of Zionist controlled propaganda.

To those who believe it was staged. Why would the Oscars promote black on black crime on live TV? Let’s grant the notion, Will Smith and Chris Rock were prepared to degrade their race for the sake of viewership etc? Says alot about what Blacks in Amreeka think of their own race.

Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars ceremony after hitting Chris Rock but refused, the Academy says.

The body also says it has initiated "disciplinary proceedings" against Smith.

Smith slapped Rock after the comic made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

The actor - who won the first Oscar of his career at the ceremony - has since apologised.

In its statement, the Academy said: "Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."

It also announced it had "initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct".

These include inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy, it said.

The Academy said action may be taken at its next board meeting on 18 April. That may include "suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions," the statement said.

It also apologised directly to Rock, as well as nominees, guests and viewers.

Meanwhile, Rock said he is "still processing" the incident in his first public comments since the ceremony.

"How was your weekend?" he jokingly asked the crowd at a stand-up show in Boston, before saying he did not plan to address the incident at length.

"I'm still processing what happened, so at some point I'll talk about that," Rock told the crowd. "It'll be serious. It'll be funny, but right now I'm going to tell some jokes."

The incident on Sunday night happened just before Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor, when the comedian Rock was on stage to present the award for Best Documentary.

Rock made a quip about Pinkett Smith's shaved head. The joke referred to the 1997 film GI Jane, in which Demi Moore played the title role with a severe buzzcut.

Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the comment, while Smith appeared to initially laugh and clap his hands before he was seen on stage, walking up to Rock.

The comedian looked stunned in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but told the audience: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

In his apology, Smith said his behaviour was "unacceptable and inexcusable".

"I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris," he said in a statement. "I was out of line and I was wrong."

<b>Chris Rock's first comments since Will Smith Oscars slap</b>

Chris Rock has made his first public appearance since Will Smith slapped him during Sunday night's Oscars ceremony.

Hosting the latest leg of his US tour in Boston, the comic told fans that he is "still processing what happened".

Rock, who was greeted with a standing ovation by fans, also denied some reports in US media that he had spoken to Smith since the incident.

It comes as the Oscars organisers revealed that Smith was asked to leave after hitting Rock, but refused.

Smith slapped the comedian after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.

"How was your weekend?" Rock jokingly greeted the crowd at his show at Boston's Wilbur Theatre, before saying he did not plan to address the incident at length.

The 57-year old, who is currently starring in his "Ego Death" tour of the US, told fans that he had written the "show before all this nonsense happened," but promised to address the incident in the near future.

"I'm still kind of processing what happened, so at some point I'll talk about that," Rock said.

"And it'll be serious and it'll be funny, but right now I'm going to tell some jokes."

He also denied claims made by some, including by rapper P. Diddy, that the pair had cleared the air following the show.

"I haven't talked to anyone, despite what you heard," Rock said.

Steve Sarro, who attended the show in Boston, told BBC Breakfast that fans had shown their support of the star.

"As soon as he got on stage, we immediately broke into a standing ovation," Sarro said.

"He couldn't get a word out for a few minutes. And we saw him wipe the tears from his eyes, which, you know, it made him feel good, obviously."

Rock's comments come as Oscars organisers the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences revealed that Smith was asked to leave the event after the incident.

"Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognise we could have handled the situation differently," the statement said.

It also announced it had "initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct" and apologised to Rock.

The Academy said action may be taken at its next board meeting on 18 April. That may include "suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions", the statement said.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars in 2017 and 18, said: "Usually when someone's asked to leave and refuses to go, that's when security comes in and takes that person away. But in this case, they decided to give him an Oscar and let him back on stage to speak."

New Delhi: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spoke with actor Will Smith on Zoom before an emergency board meeting over his assault on comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars. Variety reports that Will Smith, who won Best Actor shortly after the altercation, apologized to the Academy on the Zoom call. The Academy met to decide disciplinary action against the King Richard star who slapped and swore at Oscar presenter Chris Rock for a joke he made at the expense of Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett.

A source told Variety that the Zoom call lasted 30 minutes; another source described it as "brief." Variety also reports that Will Smith apologised again to the Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson - he did so in his emotional Oscar speech as well and also in the Instagram post in which he apologised to Chris Rock by name.

It all started when Chris Rock appeared on the stage to present the award for Best Documentary Feature, where he made a joke about Will Smith's wife and actor Jada Pinkett Smith being in "G.I. Jane" because of her shaved head, which triggered the The Pursuit Of Happyness actor, who hit Chris Rock and returned to his seat and yelled, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth." Later, while receiving the Best Actor trophy, Will Smith apologised to the Academy and fellow nominees.

Will Smith, however, apologised to Chris Rock in an Instagram post later, where he said that he is "embarrassed" about what he did and an excerpt from his post read, "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started a "formal review" of the situation earlier this week and apologised to Chris Rock for the incident. "Mr Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment," the Academy said in a statement, reported news agency AFP. It also said that Will Smith had been asked to leave the Oscars after the slap and refused - doubt has been cast on this claim.

Meanwhile, Chris Rock, while performing at his comedy show at the Wilbur Theater, said, "I don't have a bunch of s*** about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend. I'm still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I'll talk about that ****. And it will be serious and funny," reported Variety.

Why does anything bad that happens to have a "see what happened elsewhere" type reply?

Why not deal with this specific issue and say "yes, I feel its bad" , "No, I dont think its bad because of the following reasons"?

This thread is about the Smith/Rock incident.

Lets not go off on a tangent.

Police officers were ready to arrest actor Will Smith at the Academy Awards after he slapped presenter Chris Rock, the ceremony's producer has said.

Will Packer told ABC's Good Morning America: "They were saying, you know, this is battery, was a word they used in that moment.

"They said: 'We will go get him, we are prepared, we're prepared to get him right now'."

<b>Chris Rock did not want Will Smith ejected from Oscars, producer says</b>

The producer of the Oscars has said he prevented Will Smith from being "physically removed" from the ceremony because "Chris Rock did not want that".

Will Packer said he had been told the bosses of the organising academy had planned to have the actor ejected after he slapped the comedian on stage.

"I had not been a part of those conversations," Packer said.

"So, I immediately went to the Academy leadership that was on site and I said, 'Chris Rock doesn't want that'."

Packer told ABC's Good Morning America, in his first interview since the incident, that he had he had told academy bosses:

“Rock has made it clear that he does not want to make a bad situation worse."

He added: "That was Chris's energy. His tone was not retaliatory. His tone was not angry.

"So I was advocating what Rock wanted at that time, which was not to physically remove Will Smith at that time, because, as it has now been explained to me, that was the only option at that point.

"It has been explained to me that there was a conversation that I was not a part of to ask him to voluntarily leave."

Packer also described how Rock told police officers at the ceremony he did not want Smith to be arrested.

"They were saying, you know, this is - battery was the word they used at that moment. They said, 'We will go get him. We are prepared. We're prepared to go get him right now. You can press charges. We can arrest him'.

"They were laying out the options, and as they were talking, Chris was being very dismissive of those options.

He was like, 'No, I'm fine'. He was like, 'No, no, no'. Even to the point where I said, 'Rock, Let them finish'.

"The other LAPD officers finished laying out what his options were and they said, 'Would you like us to take any action?' And he said, 'No'. He said, 'No'."

Smith has apologised for striking Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada, while Packer and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have come under scrutiny for their responses.

Packer, who produced the 2015 Oscar-nominated film Straight Outta Compton and 2017's Girls Trip, told the programme that Smith also apologised to him the morning after.

"He said, 'This should have been a gigantic moment for you', and he expressed his embarrassment, and that was the extent of it."

The producer had initially assumed Smith's appearance on stage was something he and Rock had planned, he explained.

"I figured, OK, he's going to say something or come at him, something funny is going to happen because that's the nature of Chris and that's the nature of Will, so let's see what happens.

"Once I saw Will yelling at the stage with such vitriol, my heart dropped and I just remember thinking: oh no, not like this."

After the film awards finished on Sunday, a police spokesperson said:

"The individual involved has declined to file a police report.
"If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."

On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organises the Oscars, released a statement saying:

“While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognise we could have handled the situation differently."

The organisation has started disciplinary proceedings against Smith, and its board will meet on 18 April to discuss what action to take.

That could include "suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by the bylaws and standards of conduct", it said.

Rock said on Wednesday, as he hosted the latest leg of his US tour in Boston, that he was "still processing what happened".

Rock, who was greeted with a standing ovation by fans, also denied some reports in US media that he had spoken to Smith since the incident.
