What's new

[VIDEOS] The genius of Pat Cummins - Can he be considered one of Australian greats?

This is going to be a tough series for Cummins and will give him an insight into how tough it is to skipper a Test side away from home especially in Asia.

He's lucky though he has good people around him on the field like Smith who seems to be guiding him a lot.

It's going to be a huge learning year for Cummins as captain in Asia.

This year he has this tour in Pakistan, a tour to SL & a tour to India + theoretically a one off Test Afghanistan in India.

Hopefully i watch him begin to figure it out. Be interesting also to see how the team behaves after the departure of Langer who was neither universally popular nor universally disliked in the dressing room.

Is the team essentially without a coach at the moment?

A lot on Pat’s shoulders.

He is a very capable person though and a good natural leader, I think this can bring out the best in him.

Smith will have a big “background” role to play as his vice, keeping him reassured and informed & on the right track.

No not without a coach. They have McDonald & DeVenuto, who were assistants for the last year at least. These two took a more prominent place when Langer was asked to "take a step back" and give the team some space to work without him/himself a holiday last year.

Smith is pretty hands on- or he was in Australia. He's not shy about advice or running minor field adjustments during the game.

Have been very impressed with Cummins captaincy so far in this series. In most other series pakistan have usually looked to see of oppostion seam bowlers and then go after the spinners. However Cummins has rotated his bowlers well but so used bowlers for correct specific roles. Also with the bat the Aussies have thought about how to cope in these conditions.

Good Aussie game plans.

1) Pacers are being used in ideal short spells and not over used which means they can go full tilt in a 4/5 over spell.
2) Spinners used as holding measure, he knows that spinners are going to do to much damage so hes using them to hold up an end. something we are letting them do via tuk tuk.
3) He cleverly did tire out or over use any main bowlers on day 5 of 1st test.
4) The pacers learnt from 1st test to bowl slightly fuller then they did in 1st test but all keep disciplined knowing mistakes would come.
5) with the reversing ball they attacked the stumps but also used a plan of attacking angles making batsmen play.
6) Cummins realized you set the game up in these conditions with big 1st inns. They knew 550+ meant that a follow on score 350+ vs scoreboard pressure would be tough. unlike pakistan stupid declaration of 470 odd in test which mean a follow on score of 270 was needed.
7) Aussie batsmen are going after pakistan new ball bowlers knowing runs are easiest to score early on.
8) Just like in the Ashes Aussies are going after the spinners knowing if they dont offer control, then pacers need to come back on.

The difference in captaincy so far in this series has been huge and there for all to see.

Australia's cricket culture is miles apart vs our "Gee Sir, Misbah Bhai, Saqlain Bhai, Ramiz Bhai culture".

Really liked Cummins as skipp since the Ashes he has the aura of late 80s cricketer aggressive sensible and astute

Warner slams Australia board for drawn-out review of captaincy ban

MELBOURNE, Nov 21 (Reuters) - David Warner has welcomed the chance to apply to overturn his life ban from leadership roles in Australia's teams but he also criticised the country's cricket board for taking time to set up the process.

Opening batsman Warner was banned from the elite game for a year and from leadership positions for life in 2018 after he was adjudged to have played the leading role in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal.

The former test vice-captain can now request a review of the leadership ban after Cricket Australia (CA) approved changes to its integrity code to allow players and staff to apply for relief from long-term sanctions.

The changes confirmed on Monday come nine months after the Australian players' union wrote to CA in February urging Warner's ban be reconsidered.

Warner said the drawn-out process had been "traumatic" for him, and compared it to the four days the board took to ban him in 2018 when the ball-tampering scandal broke.

"It's a tad disappointing that when you make a decision in 2018 it's in four days, and then this takes nine months," Warner told Australian media on Monday.

"It's good to get in a position where it gives me an opportunity to ring up the integrity unit to have a word to them and put forward my case.

"It's been drawn out and it's traumatic for me and my family and everyone else who was involved in it - we don't need to relive what happened."

Warner had made no secret of his hopes to lead Australia and enjoyed warm support from former players and prominent cricket pundits.

Under the code of conduct changes, Warner can apply to have his ban overturned by a three-person review panel.

"I'm not a criminal," Warner said.

"You should get the right of an appeal at some stage.

"I understand that they put a ban in place, but banning someone for life, I think it's a bit harsh.

"I'm a leader in the team, no matter what. You don't need to see a C (captain) or a VC (vice-captain) next to my name."

Warner has often been described as an unofficial leader in the Australian setup and captained Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad for several seasons.

The code of conduct amendment arrived too late for Warner to be considered for the captaincy of Australia's ODI team, which Aaron Finch vacated when he retired from the format in September. read more

Test captain Pat Cummins was confirmed as ODI captain a month ago but later said he would be open to sharing the role with team mates including Warner to ease his burden as a multi-format player. read more

Though Warner had a poor tournament with the bat at the recent T20 World Cup in Australia, he is seen as a possible successor to skipper Finch, who may elect to relinquish the role after the home summer.

Do Australia actually want Warner in a leadership role? I wouldn’t.

"No Cowards In An Australian Team": Pat Cummins Fires Back At Justin Langer

Skipper Pat Cummins made clear Tuesday there were "no cowards" on the Australian team, firing back at comments made by former coach Justin Langer. Langer last week attacked the anonymous "cowards" who leaked against him in the lead-up to his resignation this year after widespread reports in the Australian media, citing sources, about his intense coaching style.

Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley rejected Langer's claims and threw his support behind the playing group, with Cummins also strongly defending his dressing room.

"There's no cowards in an Australian cricket team, not ever," Cummins told reporters in Perth ahead of the first Test against the West Indies on Wednesday, adding that he was "disappointed" Langer had dredged up the issue.

"I think it's disappointing sometimes the focus gets drawn to off-field issues but it hasn't really affected our team."

Langer has since backtracked somewhat, claiming he was not referring to players when he used the word "cowards", a move Cummins said he appreciated.

"I think he had a think about it and clarified it, so I thank him for that," said the skipper at Perth Stadium, which carries Langer's name on one of the stands.

"But we're really proud of the last 12 months, how we've fronted up, the way we've played, the way we've conducted ourselves. Players can certainly hold their heads high."

Langer walked away from his job in February after failing to secure the public support of key players and following acrimonious contract talks with Cricket Australia.

He was unhappy at being offered only a six-month extension despite steering Australia to a 4-0 Ashes victory over England in 2021 and then to Twenty20 World Cup glory the same year.

In an explosive podcast last week, he claimed: "Everyone was being nice to my face but I was reading about this stuff, and half of it ... I could not believe that is what was making the papers.

"A lot of journalists use the word 'source'. I would say, change that word to 'coward'. A coward says, not a source."

Langer is due to commentate on the two-match West Indies series and Cummins insisted there was no "ill-will" and he was keen to catch up with him.

"I'm looking forward to seeing him. He'll be in and around here commentating, so it'll be good."

Cummins revealed Australia's line-up for the first Test would be as widely expected, with pace bowler Scott Boland and opener Marcus Harris left out on what is expected to be a fast, bouncy surface.

Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will lead the attack, along with the spin of Nathan Lyon, with no changes to the top seven.

"You probably could have picked it 12 months ago," said Cummins.

"Everyone has done well to get them fit and firing for this series and we're in a really good place. Easy decision."

Top-ranked Australia are hot favourites, with the West Indies without a win on Australian soil for 25 years.

After Ponting he has to be the best Australian Captain.

After Ponting he has to be the best Australian Captain.

All Australian captains are generally very good

I haven’t come across a single Aussie skipper who doesn’t understand the game.

A good tactician and a great leader.

Will be remembered for owning his counterpart Ben Stokes in England and destroying Bazball.

Pat Cummins Got Babar again with a ripper. Clean him up early as Pakistan's batting is collapsing after 2 quick wickets.

Pat Cummins is all over the Pakistan batters. He has 3 wickets till now for 37 runs. He is bowling a beautiful spell here.

5/48 for the Aus skipper. His wicket of Abdullah Shafiqe changed the course of the game, imo. Pakistan was looking good at 1/124 and that wicket induced a big collapse. Smart bower too, he bowled that one from wide off the crease.

With this fifer, he became only the 2nd captain to take a five-wicket haul at the MCG during the Boxing Day Test. The other one was Anil Kumble in 2007.

Pat looks like he's going to take a wicket every ball.
So scary to watch.

Great set up from Cummins to get Masood, 5 short ones, and the 6th was full and Masood's weight was his backfoot, so his balance was off getting an edge to the slip cordon:

Pat Cummins has completed the landmark of 250 test wickets as he removed well set Rizwan in the 2nd test match at MCG. Brilliant stats for the Aussie Skipper.

Pat Cummins has been brilliant again as he took the 2nd fifer of the 2nd test match and completed his 10-wicket haul against Pakistan. Winning it for his team on his own.

What an absolute superb performance from the Aussie Skipper. Took te game away from Pakistan Single-Handedly. Probably the best Test match bowler in the world right now especially at home.

Goat. It's amazing what he's achieved and he's almost peerless. Virtually gone under the radar such has been his reign. Sublime cricketer

Great captain. Great bowler. Great person.

Just everything is perfect about this guy. Australia is incredibly lucky to have a leader like him.

Things have been clicking for Australia under Cummins.

Already 2 world titles (WTC and ODI WC). They may win the next WTC also. I also expect them to win 2025 CT.

Ridiculously good. Every time you think you've got a decent partnership going, he comes on and bowls a peach.

He was brilliant and so were the other 2. No easy 4s, well placed fields and relentless pressure at around 84mph, coming from a height of well over 6ft.

Pat Cummins, when bowling to right-handers in Australia:

The one that nips back, average 12
The one that swings in, average 6

His surprise wicket taking deliveries are deadly.

Wf8rCEx.png

Australia's performance has greatly improved under his captaincy. Not just in Test but in ODI too.

Cummins has troubled every Pakistan Batter throughout the whole series. WHen nothing is working, this guy comes and gets a wicket. Treat to watch his bowling.

Did the same in World Cup final.

Often takes crucial wickets at key stages.

He slips under the radar of Starc and Hazlewood. You will think that Starc will rip apart a batting line with his yorkers and inswingers but he comes and takes fifer and job done.

Cummins got another fifer and this is the third one in a row. Brilliant and total domination from this guy.

Already a great in test cricket.

Most consecutive five-wicket hauls by captains in Test cricket:

4 - Imran Khan 1982-1983

3 - Jason Holder 2018

3* - Pat Cummins 2023-2024

Cummins got another fifer and this is the third one in a row. Brilliant and total domination from this guy.
Pat Cummins is the first Australian to take three consecutive Test five-wicket hauls at home since Merv Hughes in 1988. Simply superb this guy is.

Probably looking at the last ATG fast bowler in Test cricket. Soak it in, brothers
Astonished by the Australian skipper’s brilliance with the ball during the Boxing Day Test and in Pakistan’s opening innings at the SCG, Michael Vaughan delivered a googly in commentary.

Asked whether he would prefer Australian legend Dennis Lillee or Cummins as a player, the former English captain opted against playing a straight bat.

“I saw a bit of D.K. Lillee, but I think Pat Cummins,” Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.

“I don’t think he is ever going to surpass Sir Don, but I think Pat Cummins is going to be Australia’s greatest cricketer after Sir Don. I honestly think he is that good. His bowling. His captaincy. His numbers. He has five to seven years left to play.

“I honestly think he is that good that we will be talking about him in a few years as being just behind Sir Don Bradman as the greatest Australian cricketer.”

Cummins is absolutely top drawer but that's way way over the top from Vaughan.

Next only to bradman? Yeah, calm down bud.

People still don't understand that the Australian bowling is pretty average at the moment. There's only one guy that is masking it all: Pat Cummins. He's just phenomenal.

Starc and Hazlewood are cannon fodder these days without the new ball and Lyon, as I have said repeatedly, is easily the worst-ever bowler to get 300+ wickets.

Pat Cummins is bowling royalty. An absolute pleasure to watch him. Without him, Pakistan would've probably chased 317 in Melbourne and scored 400+ here in Sydney.

He has become a slightly quicker version of McGrath

He bowls on the same line and length where McGrath used to bowl

He's been head and soulders better than everybody else

That honor has already been taken by the great Shane Warne.

He will finish as one of the greatest Australian fast bowlers right up there with Mcgrath and Lillee.

A generational talent.

His record speaks for himself. one of the best bowlers currently in all formats.

Bad record in India and SriLanka, generally struggles on flat pitch outside Australi, he is great but not in the Mcgrath, Akram, Ambrose territory and will never be

By looking at these stats, can we say that he is one of the most successful bowlers as a captain? 100 wickets now for him as a captain. Brilliant.

During a conversation with the former chairman of PCB, Ramiz Raja, on a local news channel, Babar Azam was asked to rank several bowlers based on the difficulty he faces when batting against them. He rated Pat Cummins as the most challenging:

“The way he has improved over the years, he will not give you a loose ball. He knows how I can take the wicket of a certain batter by bowling at a certain position. He traps you. He gives you a tough time. He challenges your tempering and technique to the fullest."

“If he does bowl a loose delivery, then I think that he does that intentionally. That is why I rate him highly because he has the ability to take a wicket. He never bowls with a consistent pace; he would normally bowl at 130-135 [kph] and then suddenly bowl you out at 145. So he has the ability to vary his pace. One thing about him is that he will always bowl at a hard length; if he is bowling at full length, then it is intentional.”

MLC 2024: Australia's captain Pat Cummins set to play for San Francisco Unicorns

In a major signing, Australia’s Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins is set to feature in the second season of Major League Cricket (MLC). The 31-year-old will play for the San Francisco Unicorns, a franchise with a strategic partnership with Victoria's first-class setup in Australia. Cummins is expected to take on a leadership role with the Unicorns following Aaron Finch's retirement.

This MLC stint marks a significant move for Cummins into the T20 franchise world, especially after leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL 2024 final. The Australian skipper has also played in the Big Bash League. Cummins has been on the road with Australia and the Sunrisers since mid-February, and the three-week MLC stint, starting five days after the World Cup, will conclude a demanding cricket schedule that began with the tour of New Zealand in February.

Interestingly, Cummins has previously shown little interest in the T20 franchise circuit. His decision to play in the MLC highlights the league's growing prominence in world cricket, attracting top-tier stars. Cummins will join fellow Australians Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Spencer Johnson, Steve Smith, and Jake Fraser-McGurk for the second season of MLC. It’s also understood that Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and several other members of Australia’s World Cup squad are expected to participate.

The second season of MLC kicks off on July 5 with a doubleheader. Defending champions MI New York and Seattle Orcas will open the season in a rematch of last season's final in Morrisville, followed by a home game for Texas Super Kings against the LA Knight Riders at the Grand Prairie Stadium in the Dallas Metro area.

Feels like PSL is slowly going to the backside. Quite many leagues now have better overseas players than PSL.

Cummins creates history with second consecutive T20 World Cup hat-trick

Another milestone for Australia's premier fast bowler as he claims yet another hat-trick.

Australia quick Pat Cummins created history in St Vincent on Saturday when he became the first player to register a hat-trick in consecutive ICC Men's T20 World Cup matches.

Cummins registered a hat-trick over two overs against Bangladesh on Thursday and the right-armer completed the feat once again against Afghanistan when he had Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib dismissed with three consecutive deliveries.

It was just the eighth time that a bowler has completed a hat-trick at a Men's T20 World Cup and the first time a player has achieved the feat on multiple occasions.

Cummins is already a member of an illustrious group of seven players to have taken a hat-trick at a Men's T20 World Cup, with Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021), Kagiso Rabada (2021), Karthik Meiyappan (2022) and Josh Little (2022) the other bowlers to have done so previously.

After a hat-trick against Bangladesh, Cummins followed it up with yet another hat-trick against Afghanistan

While Cummins admitted he did not know he had registered the hat-trick during the Bangladesh match, the Australia pacer revealed he was aware of what had occurred this time around.

"I remembered that one," Cummins said during the innings break.

"It's crazy thát I have played 100-odd games for Australia and now I have got two (hat-tricks) in a row."

Pat Cummings is easily an atg.

He's an atg captain and he's one of the best Middle overs bowlers in the world, ontop of that he's also a decent tailender, he isn't revolutionary and gets out when he has to attack but if he's standing next to a batsmen, he won't give his wicket away

Pat Cummins likely to make a comeback in Sheffield Shield ahead of Border-Gavasker Trophy

Australian captain Pat Cummins is likely to make a comeback in the Sheffield Shield ahead of the much awaited Test series, Border-Gavasker Trophy against India. The series will start in the late November this year.

Cummins has been rested from Australia's UK tours (England and Scotland), where the Aussies will play 5 ODI's and 6 T20I's. Cummins will be focusing on Red-ball during this time. Australia will play 5 Test match series against India, in the Border-Gavasker Trophy and then will play two Tests against Sri Lanka. These 7 Tests will be the ultimatum to Aussies and will decide whether they can defend their WTC title. They're currently on second position in the WTC rankings just behind India.

Cummins last played Sheffield Shield back in 2021 for New South Wales and played just 9 games in the four-day domestic competition. The batters will play two rounds of Shield and those who will not be in the part of Pakistan ODI series might get another outings.

"Ronnie [coach Andrew McDonald] called me the other day and said we need to talk about this," Cummins told News Corp. "I prefer to go a little bit fresher but definitely play some cricket going in.

"So I'd say it's either two or three ODIs, plus a Shield [game] or maybe just some Shield, maybe some NSW one-day stuff. I imagine kind of late October/early November will be when I start playing building up for the Tests."

Australia haven’t won the Border-Gavasker Trophy since 2014. And they lost the last two home Test series against India.

Pat Cummins takes eight-week break ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Australia Test Captain Pat Cummins has taken an eight-week break following a packed cricket calendar ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Notably, Australia will host India for five Tests beginning from November 22 for the first time since 1992.

Ahead of the series, Cummins has decided to take a good two-month break to re-energise himself ahead of the packed home schedule against Pakistan and India. Hence, he won't be featuring in the upcoming white ball series against Scotland and England. Recently, the Aussie skipper opened up on his break and mentioned the gruelling cricketing calendar he’s been a part of since June 2023

"Everyone that comes back after a break is a little bit fresher, you never regret it. I've basically been bowling non-stop since the World Test Championship final, nearly 18 months ago. This gives me a good seven or eight weeks completely off bowling so the body can recover, then you start building up again for the summer. It means you can hopefully bowl for a little bit longer, maintain pace is a bit easier, make you less susceptible to injuries,” Cummins was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.

Notably, Cummins hasn’t had much time away from the pitch since June 2023 as he featured in World Test Championship final, The Ashes, ODI World Cup 2023, IPL (Indian Premier League) and T20 World Cup 2024. Hence, it’s pivotal for the Australian pace spearhead to get much-needed rest ahead of the all important series.

Cummins eager to add BGT in his illustrious cabinet

The 31-year-old is eager to win the elusive BGT which India have retained since 2017.

“It’s the trophy I haven’t won before. This is the one trophy a lot of our group haven’t ticked off. We’ve achieved some amazing things over the last few years as a Test group. You kind of back yourself to win every series at home. I think you need to try and be up there in the upper echelon of teams. That’s what lies ahead of us this summer. They’re a really good side. We play them quite a lot, we know them really well, but we feel like we’re really well placed also,” he added.

Australia have lost to India in the last two Test series at home in 2018-19 and 2020-21 respectively. Hence, the upcoming series is a highly anticipated one for both teams as they will re-ignite one of the greatest rivalries in Test cricket in modern times.

Cummins is an ATG already. Question will be where he ends among greats. He should surpass the likes of Lillee but chances of surpassing any of McGrath, Donald or Wasim is less because they were all format genius.
