[VIDEOS] Wasim Akram, the best cricketer of the 1990s?

my list:
1. Warne
2. Tendulkar
3. Lara=Waugh=Wasim=Curtly=Donald
4. Pollock=Waqar=Walsh

Very hard to split some tiers

He is probably one of the big 3.

The other two would be Tendulkar, Lara or Murali, Donald, Warne.

There is also Steve Waugh, Ambrose, McGrath, Pollock, Waqur.

I think it would be:

1) Wasim
2) Tendulkar/Lara
3) Donald/Warne/Murali

Akram was man of the match in the final of a world cup in the 90s along with multiple test match wins away from home .
Sachin acheived nothing apart from some personal records and several chokes.
Its not even close.

Tendulkar was man of the tournement world cup 1996, 2003

What did you say? Tendulkar was man of the test series IN AUSTRALIA (against Warne, McGrath) in 1999.

Nice tribute from ICC

Tendulkar did not deserve to be Man of the series in that 1999 series. He only played well in the 2nd test. But did not perform in the other 2 tests. Pls Tendulkar's performance mattered little - India was basically pulverized in that series

It is very difficult to pick the best cricketer in the 1990's because many teams had legendary players.

Wasim Akram was definitely up there.

Sachin Tendulkar for me folks. I am pained to see Murali never get a mention. This guy is always ignored despite taking more wickets then Warney probably because he was not the most glamorous. No stud in the ear or highlighted hair for Murali. These are my top two players from the 1990's, sorry Wasim bhai!

If only his coaching could come any where close to his playing credentials

Not true at all! He was gunned down at least thrice by umpires in that series. Even then he left his mark on the series!

His performance mattered little in that series because rest of the team was dire especially the batting except for VVS at SCG.

In no particular order :-

Tendulkar
Wasim
Lara
Warne

Got to be one between these four.

Murali really made his mark in the 2000s. In the 90s Warne was better

What a spell vs SA in Lahore in 1997

Mcgrath was most effective in winning games even if he was not a speed demon. He demolished sides in tests and odis consistently. Shane Warne was a great too who completed the job left unfinished by mcgrath if any.

Let me settle the Lara / Tendulkar

If you think of it has a championship

1990-1993 - both pretenders
1994 - Lara Champion

With Lara’s slight mid 90s decline, Tendulkar overtook him around 1998.

Then Tendulkar’s choke Vs Pakistan followed by Lara’s masterclass vs Australia with the legendary 4th innings 153*, the King Lara got back his title emphatically.

Tendulkar can’t dream of what Lara did in that Aussie series.

You can show me all the stats you want, I do not care

My top 5

1. Akram
2. Lara
3. Waqar Younis
4. Saeed Anwar
5. Allan Donald

Since the first tour of Sachin to Austraia in 1992 , 90s belonged to Sachin. He completely changed the landscape. Started the decade as a teenager and ended up captaining Rest of the world XI in 1998 led his side to win with a 125. Akram played under him. Desert storm, Destroying of shane warne, Masterful debut as opener, Great crunch over bowling. His fan base was intense even in the 90s. All the 10 year old Australian kids became huge fans of Sachin. Lara and Warne second. They were the biggest head turners of the 90s. Not even a contest.

If Bradman is considered best ever cricketer then this XI says it all.

Nothing else matters.

Lara's own team mate Ridley Jacobs payed him the biggest tribute in 2005.

"Honestly, the biggest problem is the skipper," Jacobs told Essential, a bi-monthly magazine covering his native Antigua and Barbuda.

"The skipper sets the tone for the whole team. You can't be captain and always in the spotlight. You can't be a good captain and have an attitude when you don't do well.

"A captain has to be able to motivate his team. He can't afford to be selfish. With this captain, it is not for the love of the game anymore, it's for him."

Tendulkar 100 Vs Eng chasing 380 after Mumbai attacks

Pakistan's last victory in Australia was in the 1995 Sydney Test. Wasim Akram was phenomenal took four wickets in the first innings and the delivery to Michael Slater was a treat to watch.
