[VIDEOS] "We will try to score 500" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

My salute to this great nation. The only nation who would stay hopeful and go for a fight even in this situation.

This is why i will always remain a lover of Pakistan cricket and a proud Cornered Tiger for life

Bhaijaan stop mocking us like that it hurtsss yaar

Bhaijaan stop mocking us like that it hurtsss yaar

You mistaking his genuine support for Pakistan in this very tough situation, for him mocking you. Believe me, I am a hardcore India fan, but even I am rooting for Pakistan to pull it off vs Bangladesh in spectacular fashion such that Pakistan smashes into the top four.

Not one person shall then forget this match for the rest of their life.

What an amazing day and game it shall be for the cricketing world. For the sake of cricket lover worldwide, I hope Pakistan fights back like cornered tigers against Bangladesh.

Am praying that Pakistan gets to bat first.

Target should be 600 runs. Bangladesh does not have a pace attack barring Mustafiz to speak off and they are mostly spin oriented. All dependends on the pitch and if the ball is coming on to the bat and not spinning.

Still dude, 500-600 in an ODI? Humanely impossible!

Today is the day when Pakistan team doesn't have to play as a team. All the top 7 batsmen should have their individual targets of scoring 50 runs each in 35 balls. Just go out and hit your half century in 35 balls and things may happen.

I hope Bangladesh win the toss and bowl just for the memes :))

Getting knocked out of a WC at the toss :))) :))) :))) :))) :)))

Thats the wrong approach. Instead, whoever gets into form and is hammering away nicely, the other batsman should just rotate strike to give strike back to the one hitting most runs. Why? Because on a particular day, only one or two batsman are going to hit the big bulk of the scoring. The others should punish any bad balls, and then rotate strike back to the big hitter of the day.

Go back to the high scoring match between Aus and SA, where each scored more than 400 and Aus lost. the big chunk of Australia score was made by Ponting who scored 164. IN reply South Africa's innings was dominated by Herschelle Gibbs who scored 175.

Sure there were significant contributions from other players as well. Australia innings had 3 other 50+ score besides Pontings 164. Likewise SA had two 50+ scores besides Herschelle Gibbs' 175.

In other words asking all bastmen to go in and start scoring 50s by hitting 6s and 4s can be counter productive. Just focus on supporting the guy who is sighting and hitting the ball well. When the other batsmen get a lose ball, hit it out of the boundary. Else rotate strike to the hitter of the day.

First of all, this post has a clickbait title. Sarfaraz is constantly saying that we have to be "realistic", and the main priority is to win, that's all. He is indecisive and always gives both answers to every hard question, but the meaning is absolutely opposite to the post title. He is NOT trying to score 500, he is only trying to win and "end on a high note". He is not even trying for that, "If it happens it happens" - which means it is now impossible. Listen from 2:30 onwards and confirm this.

Now for some comments on what he said throughout this press conference.

At 00:55 the journalist asks him about the NRR, and whether there could be some changes to the rules in the future to decide how group stages are decided. In typical Sarfaraz fashion, he redirects the question towards the required win margin against Bangladesh, acts like and innocent child and literally says "I don't know what is the reason behind this, but I can't do anything. Tsk." and shrugs and moves on. Sarfaraz, you know that the reason for this is how badly your team has lost when it lost, and how it has barely managed to win when it did win. As the captain, you can't just stay "I can't do anything" and insinuate that ICC was somehow unfair to you by giving you this target when the maths are not subject to bias. I would say stop blaming everything but yourself, your captaincy and your team's performance, but you have proven that you are incapable of that so I'll just move on for now.

At 4:00 journalists asks him about disappointment. Sarfaraz makes sure to point out that "things have happened that are not in our hands, we'll try our best to win tomorrow." Sarfaraz, were the WI, Aus and Ind games also out of your hands? The game against NZ when in typical Sarfaraz fashion you pushed the field back after 5 wickets for less than 90, brought on non-wicket takers, let them build a partnership and take the NZ score to almost 250? Then deflecting on the pitches. Still blaming everything he can, except for his pathetic captaincy and his team's overall poor performance. In the end of that answer, he even tries to sell us the Pakistani teams "good performance for beating two semi-finalists", as Pakistan is getting kicked out of the world cup.

At 11:05, he basically says with a smile that he still wants to be and is hoping to continue being the Pakistan captain. This, after all the losses from the Champions trophy onwards in both home and away ODIs and Tests. This man is so shameless and pathetic that it's hard to believe. No sense of responsibility or guilt at all. And he keeps saying that PCB will do whatever is best for Pakistan cricket and Pakistan, after they kept persisting with him as a captain (and, as he hopes, will continue to do so). What a load of rubbish.

At 13:00, the journalist asks a very reasonable question about Pakistan team's performance since the Champions Trophy, including being kicked out of Asia Cup after losing to Bangladesh, about the Australia series, NZ series, ENG series (he forgot about the SA series). And asked if Pakistan team's downfall had started after the Champions Trophy, because that is what the stats are saying at least. Instead of taking responsibility or answering like a man (let alone a leader or captain), Sarfaraz decides to make a pouty face and simply ask for the next question, acting as if the journalist has just said something blasphemous. This Sarfaraz is a man who can't even face reality if it is not in his favor.

AT 13:45, journalist asked him about takeaways from the tournament. This idiot mentions literally everyone by name except for Haris, the man who literally played match winning innings twice and was not being selected because of Sarfaraz's genious. If you are mentioning everyone by name, at least don't miss out some one like that, you buffoon!

Basically, this man will continue to shamelessly drown Pakistan cricket as long as he can get to play captain. If PCB continue with this buffoon as a captain, and if Pakistanis allow this to happen, then Pakistanis DESERVE all the humiliation that is inevitably going to come Pakistan's way - as well as the continuing downfall and destruction of Pakistani cricket.

Probably the best post I've ever read on this site.

Very spot on with everything. I also found it shameful he didn't mention Haris Sohail. Honestly the one big reason we don't have a shot at the semis since Malik was making ducks.

Lol!! Looks like this one will be trolled. Far from reality.

These things are only to satisfy pak fans.

Do you think bangla is so weak?? You guys have lost against bangla in Asia cup.

It is very simple. There is nothing to lose in a loss. Pakistan should try to score as much possible. Show intent if Pakistan win toss.
If Bangladesh bat first, then play to win.

If Pak goes all guns blazing and lose wickets early Bangladesh could very well win. IT's not a normal match, so if Bangladesh win it will be due to Pakistan risking it all.

Bangladesh should play Pakistan in a full 5 match bilateral series if they feel they are the better team.

What if Bangladesh bats first and still beats Pakistan?

Then there will be no such excuse.

I really hope that we win the toss and elected to field first.

I know for sure that Pak don't have the capability to score above 250 against us.

They really need some heavy thrashing. Hope no 5 is on the way for them.

They have to try even if they don’t have capability

What’s so wrong in showing intent to try? Why are people feeling hurt by this statement

Getting to 300 against Bangladesh will be an achievement in itself. Bangladesh has easily been the 4th best team. The WC would've been a good one had they made it to the semis.

<iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/346211184?byline=0&portrait=0" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowfullscreen></iframe>

"We'll try our best to finish on a high by winning tomorrow's match"

"Both teams look strong so hopefully we'll do well"

"316 runs is a big margin, which you can only make up if you bat first and score 500-600, I don't know what is the reason behind this but I can't do anything"

"We came here to win all the matches"

"We'll try our best to qualify but we need to be realistic. If you need to make 600 runs, or if you make 400, it's not easy to dismiss the other team for 50. We have to make 500-550 and win by 316 runs. If we're realistic, we'll try to win the match and finish on a high note. If Allah has written something for us then something may happen, the other team can get out and we will obviously try to make 500 runs. But the tournament has seen scores of 280-300 mostly"

"We haven't seen the pitch, we will play our best possible team"

"There is disappointment because we made a comeback, now it's not in our hands. We were expecting that maybe the margins could be smaller but when we saw the figures then we were disappointed. But the boys are still motivated and will go into the ground with good preparation"

"If you look at the pitches for the recent matches, it wasn't easy to play open cricket, the ball was turning and gripping so it wasn't easy. What's happened has happened but we will put our full effort tomorrow"

"You can say that we were unlucky. In the West Indies match we didn't turn up and got out for very few runs which impacted our NRR"

"I think things have improved quite a bit, we have beaten good teams, two semi-finalists. In the beginning we weren't playing good cricket, but the way we came back, I don't think any other team did that"

"The most important match was the Australia match where our position was good, if we had won that our position could have been better. That match was the turning point, things were in our hands till then"

"In the beginning you can say that the batsmen didn't make big runs. Overall as a batting unit we didn't make big runs but everyone contributed and played their part. Hafeez bhai unluckily got out to part-timers, he tried but I think towards the end the batsmen contributed. We should have made more centuries from the top order"

"After the World Cup there's a 2-2.5 month gap, PCB will look into how to make things better and the managers and coaches will give their reports, PCB will do whatever is best for Pakistan cricket"

"PCB will decide about captaincy and coaches, my wish will remain in my heart"

"My performances have been so and so, I didn't perform extraordinarily. I tried to contribute wherever my team needed me"

"All the boys tried to perform for Pakistan, sometimes you try but you can't perform. Overall as a team we performed well. Fakhar made runs but he couldn't play big innings. He did give us good starts like in the SA match where we needed a partnership, he contributed against England also. Hasan Ali is a great team player and gives his effort, performance is a matter of luck but your effort should show. Both Fakhar and Hasan showed a lot of effort"

"Babar Azam performed well in his first World Cup, the way he responded was brilliant. Shaheen Shah Afridi performed well, Amir bowled really well, Wahab Riaz made a good comeback and Shadab bowled well. The boys put in some good performances which will be good for Pakistan in the near future"

drop Imam then as an opener; try Fakhar and Hafeez as openers;

Match is then fully a dead rubber

If true this is disgusting

What ever tiny chance we have would be heavily dependent on Fahkar and we are throwing that away so that a senior’s feelings arent hurt

Makes me want to puke, this worse than younis khans blackmail

How much will the captain score. That's my question.

We will most likely not make it to the semi finals. How will the Captain respond, will he step up his game or continue to hide behind better players? Today's game will expose him if he fails to score a hundred or a daddy hundred to prove his mettle as captain.

How can a captain be ignorant of NRR. Its like engine driver not knowing what speed to go at and then later realise, the train is not going to make it

It's Sarfraz.

You don't expect such things from him.

Oh gawd, Sarfaraz mentioning how Pakistan are unlucky too. With this attitude of blaming luck, they'll never make any progress.

Pakistan have to face up to the fact they weren't good enough. Simple. That is the only way they'll move forward and become a better cricket team.

If they're bringing up luck, they're making themselves victims.

Love all my PP'ers attitude! No point in going out without trying if we do indeed bat first. I don't mind losing to Bangladesh if it was because we were trying to blast each ball into the moon!

Sarfaraz being clueless as always. Pakistan is a minnow and will struggle to score 250 against Bangladesh.

Lol the team he has played shows how scared they are from losing to BD than scoring 500. This guy is just good for giving big statements like this and disappears the moment when you want the actual action.

Did someone not tell them that 500 is to be scored in 50 overs and this is not a test match.

If I was a Pakistani fan or if India were in this situation I would have wanted my team to go for it. Even if they got out for 100 runs I would have been more happy with them trying rather than not try at all.

This is world cup, comes once every 4 years. If you have 0.000000001% chance to win it then go for it. Not trying to qualify and winning this match won't achieve anything.

He forgot to mention in how many matches ... maybe he meant in the next 3 matches combined

I think Pakistan supporters would to see their team give it a go - its one in a million chance where you get more than 400 and try and bowl Bangladesh out for a 100 or thereabouts; It may never happen but you have got to give it a go whilst you have got even the faintest hopes of qualifying for a World Cup ; You have to grab and grasp on to that hope and give it a go

Exactly, seems like Atherton is following my posts on PP :)))

He's bang on there. I can't believe Pakistan didn't even try. I am so disappointed the current PCT lost my respect today.

Looks like they're en route for scoring 500 in a hundred overs.

These players are scared of the Media backlash, scoring 400 and then getting Bangladesh out for less then 100 is an impossible task.

If Pakistan would go for it and lose, it would cause further embarrassment chasing a goal which is not achievable.

They need to beat Bangladesh and restore some sanity and order.

Having said that, no reason to bat this slow, not sure what that is all about!

Someone forgot to tell Sarfi that it's a 50 over game.

Looks like they're en route for scoring 500 in a hundred overs.

If Fakhar didn’t get out, it would have taken millennium. Today Pakistan team just woke up that it has been five years since Misbah left.

They should slow down a bit and show mercy to BD bowlers, at this rate they might score 700.

428 to go in 35 overs. Easy Peasy for Sarfi. We have it under control.

I think the team wants to oust Sarfaraz as captain...only explanation! He must've lost the support of the team.

A better explanation is everyone is playing for their spot in the team in future. No one wants to get out cheaply while trying to score fast.

Mark Nicholas: It does seem apparent that Pakistan will not try and go big

We didn't pick the team , nor do things out of the box to have a go. Why play your full compliment of bowlers when you know if Bangladesh bat more than 35 overs we are out if the Tournament.
We could have guessed mehidi would open to fakhar, why not just out Hasan Ali to open and say , your job is to try and hit this guy for 2 6s an over.
We didn't try or plan at all.
I would rather have done some out of the box stuff and lost the game

Look at the bright side, they are only 1 wicket down. That means Sarfi can go for a full monty and he will score a quick fire 200 off 50 balls or so. Relax guys, we have it in the bag.

Did you mean 200 off 50 overs?

This has to be it. Sarfaraz's position as captain is untenable. So much lies

Honestly, I don't buy into conspiracy theories. But today it is more evident than ever before that the players don't buy into Sarfaraz the captain and what he wants to do.

Sarfaraz very clearly said, it requires a miracle but we will go for it. We will try to score 500. forget 500, you don't even score 300 like this. Look at how Imam has played. He hasn't even cared one bit. Even Babar is just playing his normal game.

Either it is what I said above that the players only want to play for themselves and dont care about wehat the captain wants. Or, Sarfaraz is playing double games where he said something else to the players and something else in front of the press.

I strongly suspect its the former!

Nobody really thought Sarfaraz was serious about making 500 do they? You don't just get scores never reached before because you say you will haha.

I never took him seriously, Pakistan will desperately want to win today, and their best chance for that is scoring 280 and bowling Bangladesh out on a slowing pitch.

Imam-ul-Haq:

We have to be realistic and we had to assess the conditions as well
Bangladesh are a good side and the were bowling well with tight lines
We went in with good intent but 400 is difficult and our plan was to go according to the situation and look for 300-320

it shows the mentality of our players, we never aim big. Always going for the safe option

They performed the whole world cup in a below average way negative approaches whether batting first or bowling first. They are huge let downs and only know 1 way to play that is 3rpo neva according to match situation.
Its a cowards way out

They did the same against Afghans and today with all the big talk saying we will try well going at 3po going with the same boring team and batting line up is a cowards way.

Its a lost cause anyhow so may as well gone all out and played this line up and batting order.
