Lancashire Cricket have completed the overseas signing of Pakistan international seamer, Hassan Ali, for the first six matches of the 2022 LV= Insurance County Championship.

The 27-year-old is a proven wicket taker in red ball cricket, with 72 wickets at an average of 21 in Test matches and an overall First-Class tally of 244 wickets at 23.

Hassan first played for Pakistan in August 2016 in a One Day International before making his T20 International debut against England, at Emirates Old Trafford.

He then made his Test bow against the West Indies in early 2017 and has gone on to feature 17 times for his country in red ball cricket, proving a difficult proposition for batters with his constant tight lines and variations. The right-arm medium-fast bowler has since gone on to claim six five-fors at Test level including against number one ranked side, New Zealand.

Hassan was named in Pakistan's squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England and played a key role as Pakistan were crowned champions. Hassan spearheaded the Pakistan attack, taking 17 wickets to finish as leading wicket taker - and Player of the Tournament - while only conceding 4.29 runs per over.

He will arrive at Emirates Old Trafford on 1 April and will be in contention to make his English county debut against Kent at Canterbury on 14 April. Hassan will be available until after Lancashire’s match against Essex which starts on 19 May at Emirates Old Trafford.

Speaking after agreeing to join Lancashire Cricket, Hassan Ali said: “I am very excited at the prospect of playing county cricket in England for the first time in my career.

“Emirates Old Trafford is a stadium which holds special memories for me, after making my T20 International debut against England there in 2016.

“I am very proud to follow in the footsteps of Wasim Akram, a Pakistan legend, who always talks so highly of his time with Lancashire. I can’t wait to join up with the squad in April and I hope to make a significant contribution in the games that I play.”

Lancashire Head Coach, Glen Chapple, added: “We are delighted to have signed Hassan for the first six matches of this summer’s County Championship. We’ve been carefully assessing our options and looking to add the right overseas player to help us achieve our goals.

“Hassan is a high-quality player and has a fine record in First-Class and Test match cricket. We believe that his red ball skills will complement our bowling attack nicely and that the experience he has gained at international level can bring a lot into our dressing room.

“We look forward to welcoming him to Emirates Old Trafford in April.”

Wow that's big. Proper Pakistani contingent now in County Cricket like the old days.

Seems a bit of a waste by Lancashire when they've already got Anderson, Mahmood and Bailey for that period. You'd have thought they'd want a batsman.

Well he has one FC hundred and three fifties which is Don Bradman levels given the current state of English batting :))

Hopefully this leads to his development as a bowler

Shaheen is the only name I would remove from county. He is a national asset whilst the others can do with some game time.

Well it's like the good old days of so many Pakistani players featuring in English County cricket.

Great opportunity for them.

Hopefully he can stay a little longer. Could do with some coaching lessons on his ability.

Good opportunity and a lot of eyes will be on the county cricket this year. Might even go to a game or two.

Looking forward to Rizwan and seeing how he does, won’t be surprised if he’s even elevated to Captaincy for one of the formats.

Gotta love how people keep equating his T20 performance with his Test performance.

He's been an incredible match winner and is our best Test bowler.

I agree test is totally different from T20 but looking at his pace and lack of control on his bowling in T20 cricket givse some idea about his form, which is not good. He has become another Abbas but without Abbas's accuracy and swing and seam.

It’s been obvious since the 2016 Pakistan A tour of England that he has the attributes to be a successful all-rounder in English conditions.

His bowling suits English conditions, where height barely matters.

But his batting is what could really develop here.

Thing is control of bowling while mixing up good length, slower balls, bouncers, Yorkers etc in T20s in almost every single over to keep the batsmen guessing is completely different from consistently keep on bowling that area of uncertainty, sparingly mixing up bouncers and setting up batsmen which is required in test cricket.

There are numerous examples of pacers being ordinary in T20 cricket for prolonged periods of time or leaving the format behind altogether (Ishant Sharma, Anderson etc) but, they were doing pretty well in test format at the same time and number of years. Even Shami who is a quality bowler have had multiple poor seasons in T20 circuit (Still averages 31 with eco of 9.54 in T20Is) but, I doubt anyone can debate on his overall skillset and quality as a pacer.

Hassan on the other hand when in form and full fitness had top whiteball seasons as well. He at this age reasonably understands the art of bowling which is how to set up a batsman, in T20 cricket you can rarely setup a batsman and you have to rely upon deceiving him. Hassan is one of the top quality pacers we have currently however, there is no denying that he has struggled in T20 format in recent times but that doesn't take away anything from the skillset he has as a pacer and thats crucial in longer formats especially test.

The longer formats suit his type of bowling much more than T20
Cricket. His low pace is easy for batsmen to take on.

He needs a good summer to win back another yard of pace. May be also improve on rehabilitation learn a few things from a the county circuit.

He is much older than his stated age , no wonder he has lost pace at the tender age of "27", Razzaq was the same , he pace dropped when he was "26".

Lancashire once was a good county team players like Waseem Akram played for them , and now they have signed Hasan Ali, never knew things are that bad there.

Hopefully he is able to reset his confidence away from the limelight and get some overs under his belt.

Hopefully he can learn a thing or two from Jimmy Anderson…

Anderson, Hassan and Saqib isn’t a bad attack at all.

May be being around Anderson watching him he can learn a thing or two.

From Wasim Akram to Hasan Ali!!! How time changes? Seems like Lancashire is not same strong team like before.

Lancashire have won the toss and have elected to bat, will have to wait a bit to see Hassan Ali with the ball.

An opportunity for him to perform and regain his confidence after a poor spell.

He's struggled recently and needs a good few matches at Lancs.

No wickets for Hassan yet but tight stuff 0/17 in 12 overs

Solid start to Hasan's county stint.

Very dry conditions over the Bank Holiday weekend in UK so Hasan should've got some reverse swing.

Match figures of 5 for 94 from 43 overs for Hassan A
as Lancashire beat Kent by 10 wickets.

Good start for him.

Great morale booster for him. By taking wickets he knows he is not a bad cricketer.

Hopefully gets a full contract and plays more games

James Anderson and Saqib Mahmood have both been named in Lancashire's 12-man squad to face Gloucestershire in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Anderson and Mahmood both come into the squad for the match at Emirates Old Trafford, which starts tomorrow (21 April), after receiving clearance from the ECB to be available for selection.

All-rounder Luke Wood has been ruled out with a calf strain suffered against Kent last week, whilst Rob Jones and Jack Blatherwick drop out from the squad that won at Canterbury.

Hassan Ali and Phil Salt - who both starred on debut during Lancashire's 10-wicket win - are set to make their first appearances for the Red Rose at Emirates Old Trafford.

Lancashire squad to face Gloucestershire:

Dane Vilas*, Hassan Ali, James Anderson, Tom Bailey, George Balderson, Josh Bohannon, Steven Croft, Danny Lamb, Saqib Mahmood, Matt Parkinson, Phil Salt+, Luke Wells.

'I'm going to disturb him' – Hasan Ali on sharing dressing room with Jimmy Anderson

The Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali is set to pick England veteran Jimmy Anderson's brains on the art of swinging the ball during his stint with Lancashire in county cricket.

Hasan is set to play for Lancashire in six County Championship games as an overseas player in the upcoming season of England's first-class competition.

The Pakistan paceman, currently No.15 in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers, said he was "very excited" to share the dressing room with Anderson, the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history.

"I'm very excited and looking forward to sharing the dressing room with their players; obviously we have Jimmy bhai, Jimmy Anderson, so I'm very happy and very excited," Hasan told ESPNcricinfo.

Hasan added that he'd never interacted with Anderson before, but would now be picking his brains whenever he could.

"Honestly, I never spoke with him before. But now I'm going to have a lot of questions to ask him. I'm going to disturb him," he said.

"We know he's a great bowler. He swings the ball both ways. I'm going to learn how he swings the ball both ways, especially the cross-seam ball. I'm going to learn it."

'Jimmy bhai' lol such a Pakistani thing to say. Honestly I hope he can learn a few tricks from Jimmy as his pace is diminishing. Our bowlers never had such role models in the dressing room so this is great exposure for him.

Hassan claims his 1st wicket.

The Pakistan international took a sensational 6-47 as the Red Rose fought their way back into the game through the afternoon and evening sessions taking all ten wickets for 133 runs after Chris Dent and Marcus Harris had posted 119 for the first wicket.

The visitors’ opening pair had made the most of a good batting track after captain Graeme van Buuren called correctly at the toss, making a steady start in the face of some probing bowling from the international trio of James Anderson, Hassan Ali and Saqib Mahmood.

But Lancastrian hopes of an early clatter of wickets went unanswered as Dent and Harris defended through the first hour and prospered in the second with some lovely attacking shots, Harris lofting Matt Parkinson for six over long-off as the runs started to flow.

The only moments of real alarm for the visitors came when Aussie opener Harris inside edged Mahmood to fine leg for four and Dent survived a big appeal for lbw from Hassan, but the pair accelerated well in the final hour up to lunch posting their century partnership in the last over of the morning.

The afternoon session could hardly have been more of a contrast as Lancashire hit back by taking six wickets for 31 runs in a spell of just over 20 overs.

It was Hassan who made the breakthrough when Dent on 52 edged to second slip where Steven Croft took an excellent juggling catch to break the opening partnership at 119 in the 38th over.

Harris soon followed for 67 when he glanced a Mahmood delivery down the leg side that was well taken by wicketkeeper Phil Salt and George Balderson bowled James Bracey for 5.

Van Buuren and Miles Hammond were then tied down by some accurate Red Rose bowling, adding just 9 runs in 50 minutes before the pressure took its toll.

Van Buuren gloved a pull down the leg side off Mahmood to Salt for 4 before Hassan returned to take two wickets in two balls; Hammond edging a swish behind to Salt for 9 and Tom Lace lbw first ball to leave Gloucestershire on 150-6.

Ryan Higgins and Zafar Gohar steadied matters to reach tea on 170-6 before extending their partnership to 65 during the final session as this day took yet another twist.

But Lancashire claimed the final four wickets late in the day starting with Zafar who had batted steadily to reach 27 before he had a wild swipe at Parkinson and was stumped by Salt, his maiden first-class stumping.

Hassan returned to bowl Josh Shaw for 18 and then have Ajeet Singh Dale caught at point by Josh Bohannon for 4 to complete a marvellous performance with figures of 6-47.

Ryan Higgins, who has a century to his name already this season, was left 51 not out with Gloucestershire 252 all out.

Lancashire had six overs to bat but lost Balderson for 4 in the final over to a run out from a direct hit thrown by Zafar to finish on 11-1, 241 runs behind.

Hassan Ali was a happy man at the close of play after his six-wicket performance on his home debut for Lancashire.

“I really enjoyed that,” he said. “Getting a five-for in the County Championship is a great moment for me.”

“It’s also good for the team. We made a plan to keep it simple and as a bowling unit we did that and succeeded.

“If you keep patient you will get rewards (on this wicket). We did that and kept trying to bowl in the right areas. “The first session wasn’t good enough for us but you can see we (eventually) got a lot of wickets.

“A five-for is pretty special for me. And when you come off and the great Jimmy Anderson is clapping for me, that’s a great moment for me, he’s showing his appreciation.

“I was a bit nervous (to be sharing the bowling with Jimmy),” admitted Hassan. “But he was supporting me and backing me so it was nice.”

Hassan was philosophical about getting six wickets while Anderson went wicketless today.

“Sometimes you bowl really well and don’t get wickets,” he said. “That’s cricket.”

“We’ve got a brilliant bowling attack (here) and I’m enjoying playing with them.

Hassan grinned when asked about his pretty dynamic wicket celebration.

“Cricket is a long game so I thought I’m going to give something for the crowd and my team mates,” he explained.

“They tell me it gives them a lot of energy! The crowd enjoy it too so I’m happy to keep doing it.”

Hopefully it’s a celebration we will see a lot more of the coming weeks.

Was enjoying himself in the Trafford Centre the other day :)

Hassan cleans up another pair of stumps, 2/42 (23.0) so far this innings.

Really happy for him. Pakistani’s killing it in county this season with bat and ball.

The standard of County cricket must be dreadful at the moment where poor cricketers like Masood and Hassan are playing like world beaters.

It pretty much explains England’s demise in Test cricket.

Last-gasp heroics clinch thrilling Lancs victory against Gloucs

Lancashire’s excellent start to the season continued with a pulsating second victory in the LV= County Championship by an innings and 57 runs against Gloucestershire at Emirates Old Trafford.

There were just 24 balls left in the match when Gloucestershire last man Jared Warner feathered an edge off Hassan Ali to wicketkeeper Phil Salt to spark great scenes of jubilation led by Hassan’s trademark fist-pumping celebration.

It was a dramatic finale after Gloucestershire’s remaining batsman had battled valiantly throughout the day and came very close to achieving an improbable draw.

But with overs running out and two wickets needed, Dane Vilas turned to Hassan and Saqib Mahmood and it was Mahmood who ended 27 overs worth of resistance when he bowled Tom Lace for the 9th Gloucestershire wicket before Hassan applied the finish.

This final day had many twists and turns, starting with Matt Parkinson who led the way with three wickets and he was instrumental in making the breakthrough after Gloucestershire pair Miles Hammond and skipper Graeme van Buuren had put up one hour of resistance at the start of the day.

Just as we were wondering if the fourth morning was going to be as barren - as far as wickets falling - as the previous three morning sessions, Parkinson emphasized just what a dangerous bowler he can be with two wickets in two balls.

The leg spinner found some nice drift and turn to find the edge of van Buuren's bat, caught at slip by Luke Wells for 15, before completely bamboozling Ryan Higgins with his next delivery that pitched in line with leg stump but turned to hit off stump.

And Parkinson nearly had a third when Tom Lace – on a pair – drove to mid-off where a diving Dane Vilas just failed to pull off a great catch.

Hammond and Lace reached lunch on 116-5 with Hammond going to his fifty soon after play resumed (from 147 balls) before becoming Anderson’s second victim of the innings.

We had the sight of Anderson bowling to an unusual field containing a cordon of short mid-off, short extra cover, short cover, short point and one wide slip (positioned about the third slip area).

Whether the ploy worked only the batsman will know, but Hammond was then late on his shot to an Anderson seamer that nipped back onto his pads to be lbw for 50.

Parkinson backed that up with his third wicket three overs later, Zafar Gohar deceived by a floated delivery that gripped and turned into the batsman's leg stump to have the visitors 127-7 and with just under 60 overs still to be bowled the game looked destined to head Lancashire’s way.

Lace and Josh Shaw had other ideas, showing some good fight with a 79-run partnership with Lace reaching his half century off 130 balls when driving George Balderson through the covers for his sixth boundary.

But Hassan (3-49) returned to bowl a hostile over at Shaw; consecutive bouncers followed by a searing delivery that hit middle and off stumps with the batsman stuck on the back foot and out after making 29.

That breakthrough seemed to have finally swung things back Lancashire’s way but Lace found a strong ally in Warner and the pair defended stoutly for 27 overs to take the match well into the final hour although Lace had earlier been the recipient of a fortunate escape on 65 (with 18 overs left) when his attempted cut off Saqib Mahmood flew quickly to second slip where Steven Croft couldn’t cling on to the chance.

But Lace’s fine effort finally ended after 266 minutes on 71 with 10 overs left after Mahmood clipped the off stump just enough to bizarrely dislodge the leg side bail with umpire Richard Illingworth confirming the decision.

There was still further drama however as Warner and Dale batted out a further six overs before Hassan’s coup de grâce arrived to seal a very hard won victory.

Lancashire take 22 points from the game and Gloucestershire 3.

A delighted Head Coach Glen Chapple reflected on a “tough day”

“We were in a great position and played superb cricket throughout the game,” he said, “on a really good surface that was fairly flat but was like a Test pitch.

"I'm pleased that we dominated the game and played really good cricket all the way through but even with the unbelievable bowling attack we've got it was hard work and Gloucestershire played well, made it difficult and at one point a draw looked favourite.”

And Chapple is happy with the type of pitches at Emirates Old Trafford, adding:

"We'd prefer good surfaces like that because the best team has the best chance to win and at the moment we have a strong team. We didn't ever take a backward step and the effort was great - if we can find a way to keep our foot on the gas all the way through it would be great but the efforts of the team after tea were amazing. “

Josh Bohannon’s double-century was one of many highlights to take away from this game and Chapple said: “During his career to date, Josh (Bohannon) has not had a bad spell and we know now that he is a proven, quality player.

“He has been determined this winter to work on how he can make sure that he can bat long and make really big, telling scores. He richly deserves his first double hundred and everyone is delighted for him."

I wasn’t expecting Hasan Ali to take many wickets but he surprised me.His spells have been excellent.I am disappointed with Harif Rauf.He is quick but needs to bowl right line and length.

Hitting good areas and bowling some fantastic deliveries.

Pace seems decent and his confidence looks high.

Good on him.

Must be the standard of the county cricket is way too low. Bring him back to national team and he will fail to get wickets against better teams.

The standard of County cricket must be dreadful at the moment where poor cricketers like Masood and Hassan are playing like world beaters.

It pretty much explains England’s demise in Test cricket.

Thank you for this insightful and well thought out post, it’s definitely raising the quality of this forum.

Sorry to ruin the party, but this guy is also mediocre in all formats, declining in tests also. He will soon become a nothing bowler for Pakistan and will soon be dropped forever.

Pakistan played a lot of minnows in 2021, which is why he performed so good, that's why 2021 performances shouldn't be taken so seriously.

Which country has good domestic cricket then? Not Pakistan. Not England. Bangladesh? Ireland?
