Ata ur Rahman started off as a brisk fast-medium bowler who came into limelight during the 1990 under-19 series in England. The Pakistani team was led by Moin Khan who had already been earmarked as a future captain. Zahid Fazal was also part of the team. England had John Crawley, Darren Gough and Dominic Cork in their ranks.
Ata ur Rahman put up steady shows was within a year and half was being rated highly. When Waqar got injured and Saleem Jaffer already not available because of injury, Imran looked towards Ata ur Rahman to make up the World Cup squad. As it turned out, he too got injured and Wasim Haider instead played for Pakistan.
Basically, Ata ur Rahman was, as a wrote above, a brisk fast-medium bowler who angled the ball in or got it to seam it in occasionally. He took 3 for 69 in his first test but with Wasim Akram returning, did not play during the rest of the 1992 tour to England. After that he was a regular fixture in the Pakistani side until he was dropped for the final time in 1996 when he was around 21.
He was quicker than your average Pakistani bowler but fell just short of genuine pace on a consistent basis. He did not have much skill - most of the catches off his bowling had more to do with batsmen playing a wild stroke and I do not remember any bowled victim of his that did not play on. May be there was one in the Singapore Final of 1996 but I watched that match with the TV having a very poor reception.
Have no desire to discuss his banning.
I had seen atta ur Rehman bowling on TV. He did not look a good bowler. I did not see any skill in his bowling. He was not a threatening bowler. His pace was ok. I was a kid then, and did not know much about cricket. But still was surprised that why Wasim Akram (captain then) was keen on giving him a consistent run.

I think Wasim Raja?
No. I can recognize Wasim Raja very well... plus all the pictures I have seen from that tour, Wasim Raja was supporting a beard.
Here are the players who toured India in 78-79.... and the highlighted ones can be that player sitting in front of Miandad. I am 90% sure it is Talat Mirza.
.
He is Sadiq Mohammad thn...Look at this pic it looks similar:

Good point but notice the year on the blazer. It says 1971 (Tour of England). Indian tour was 8-9 years later in Jan 1980 when Sadiq would have been 35 years old....since he was born in 1945. The player sitting in front of Miandad does not look like 35 year old Sadiq!
Here is a picture of Sadiq from 1978 tour of England.

Not Pak cricketer but still, lovely pic.![]()
Nawaz Sharif was a right-hand batsman who made a duck in his only appearance for Railways against PIA in 1973-74. He then served two terms as Pakistan's prime minister, firstly between November 1990 and July 1993 and then from February 1997 to October 1999 when he was ousted by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf. He was subsequently banned from holding public office for 21 years, and was exiled to Saudi Arabia. He returned in 2007 and won the 2013 general elections - in which his main opponent was the former Pakistan captain Imran Khan - and secured his third term as prime minister.
