Vintage Photos of Cricketers...but you have to guess who it is!!

Ata ur Rahman started off as a brisk fast-medium bowler who came into limelight during the 1990 under-19 series in England. The Pakistani team was led by Moin Khan who had already been earmarked as a future captain. Zahid Fazal was also part of the team. England had John Crawley, Darren Gough and Dominic Cork in their ranks.

Ata ur Rahman put up steady shows was within a year and half was being rated highly. When Waqar got injured and Saleem Jaffer already not available because of injury, Imran looked towards Ata ur Rahman to make up the World Cup squad. As it turned out, he too got injured and Wasim Haider instead played for Pakistan.

Basically, Ata ur Rahman was, as a wrote above, a brisk fast-medium bowler who angled the ball in or got it to seam it in occasionally. He took 3 for 69 in his first test but with Wasim Akram returning, did not play during the rest of the 1992 tour to England. After that he was a regular fixture in the Pakistani side until he was dropped for the final time in 1996 when he was around 21.

He was quicker than your average Pakistani bowler but fell just short of genuine pace on a consistent basis. He did not have much skill - most of the catches off his bowling had more to do with batsmen playing a wild stroke and I do not remember any bowled victim of his that did not play on. May be there was one in the Singapore Final of 1996 but I watched that match with the TV having a very poor reception.

Have no desire to discuss his banning.

I had seen atta ur Rehman bowling on TV. He did not look a good bowler. I did not see any skill in his bowling. He was not a threatening bowler. His pace was ok. I was a kid then, and did not know much about cricket. But still was surprised that why Wasim Akram (captain then) was keen on giving him a consistent run.

Because there were no options. Aqib Javaid was terminally unfit or apart from one series against Sri Lanka, always generally ineffective and expensive.

As for Ata ur Rahman. he did bowl decently in the West Indies in 1993 even if the figures don't prove it and was retained for the series against Zimbabwe where he was a realiable support bowler when all the wickets were being taken by Wasim and Waqar. In New Zealand too, he bowled decently but was dropped because Pakistanis started looking for replacements - Akram Raza (Salim Malik's favourite who bowled straight flat non-spinning off-breaks. Kabir Khan who could make Azeem Hafeez look like Wasim Akram and then were even forced to recall an aging Mohsin Kamal for two tests against Australia).

Some of the quickest bowlers produced by Pakistan were miserable failures - Muhammad Akram, Muhammad Sami and before them, Atiq ur Rahman.

I think Wasim Raja?

No. I can recognize Wasim Raja very well... plus all the pictures I have seen from that tour, Wasim Raja was supporting a beard.

Here are the players who toured India in 78-79.... and the highlighted ones can be that player sitting in front of Miandad. I am 90% sure it is Talat Mirza.

Good point but notice the year on the blazer. It says 1971 (Tour of England). Indian tour was 8-9 years later in Jan 1980 when Sadiq would have been 35 years old....since he was born in 1945. The player sitting in front of Miandad does not look like 35 year old Sadiq!

Here is a picture of Sadiq from 1978 tour of England.

I still cannot see the pic - I have quite a collection of pics from that tour somewhere.

Upload them sir!!! :)

Can you see the image now - below?

Yes I can and yes this is Talat Mirza. Ironically, his selection came at the expense of another Talat - Talat Ali Malik who had played usefully in Australia and New Zealand earlier that year, particularly against Richard Hadlee on some soft New Zealand wickets. Being a proper test batsman, he was not considered for the World Cup following which his employers, PIA, gave him an ultimatum - either work full time for PIA and retire from international cricket or find some other employer in case he actually wanted to play cricket. Talat Ali was forced to choose the former and retired at the age of 28 at a time.

This happened at a time when the Majid and Sadiq opening partnership was already history. Majid would stop opening in India later that year and Sadiq's international career would be over soon. Pakistanis fiddled with the late Tasleem Arif (who was a flat track bully) among others but Talat Ali was already gone at 28, two years earlier.

And my collection of cricket books/magazines is still locked up. Haven't had a chance to open it up since 2003. Plus of course my office routine.

Such strong resilient characters we had in our team. Everytime they would go onto the field you could sense their burning passion to win for their country.

15th October 1990 - Waqar Younis & Wasim Akram shared 10 wickets in a Test for the 1st time. They took 15 wickets as Pakistan beat New Zealand by an innings and 43 runs.

(from PTV Sports website)

Mian Mohammed Saeed, father of Yawar Saeed (team manager until the 2010 match fixing scandal) and father in law of Fazal Mahmood. Pakistan's first captain, before it got its Test status in '52 (he was also "Captain in the British Indian Army Intelligence Service" and accompanied Hindus safely to the other side of the Wagah, receiving death threats as a reaction from more conservative Muslims... ironically, Lala Amarnath made sure that his own - future - son in law, Fazal, crossed the border safely!)

Aslam Khokhar, Pakistan's first ever centurion (no Test back then, in some dom./FC match) and, when he passed away in 2011 at the age of 91, was the oldest Pak Test player

Now, the oldest Pak Test player alive is Israr Ali, 86 years old

Both Imran's bowling picture and the one in his London flat were taken during the 1987 tour to England.

You can see TEXACO (only TEX) in the background who were ODI series sponsors in England from 1984 onwards. In 1982, the sponsors were Prudential.

In the apartment photograph, you might notice the green helmet and the GM bat both of which Imran used during the 1987 series in England. In fact, it was the only time Imran used GM in his whole career. Before that it was SP, then County and then Ihsan all the way except for this series. As for the green helmet, he wrote it during the 1987 summer and then during the first three couple of innings during the 1987 World Cup before reverting to his trademark white helmet with fibre glass visor.

:ik and :sharif, who had a forgettable FC career

Nawaz Sharif was a right-hand batsman who made a duck in his only appearance for Railways against PIA in 1973-74. He then served two terms as Pakistan's prime minister, firstly between November 1990 and July 1993 and then from February 1997 to October 1999 when he was ousted by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf. He was subsequently banned from holding public office for 21 years, and was exiled to Saudi Arabia. He returned in 2007 and won the 2013 general elections - in which his main opponent was the former Pakistan captain Imran Khan - and secured his third term as prime minister.

Another question... what is so interesting (unique) about this picture from an ODI match?

.

Anil Dilpat?

Azhar finishing off Pakistan with 80+ inning?

Azhar playing with a bat made of a SL Aussies brand?
