A robber who went viral after a video of him stealing from an ATM in Faisalabad and then sticking his tongue out at the camera surfaced on the social media, died in police custody, Geo News reported on Sunday.

The suspect, who was identified as Salahuddin and arrested in Rahim Yar Khan a month after the video incident, passed away while he was in police custody. He was reportedly suffering from a health condition and was rushed to a hospital when his condition deteriorated, where he died.

The district police officer has ordered an inquiry into his death, the exact cause of which would be determined in a post-mortem.

Salahuddin was arrested when he was recognised by security officials in Rahim Yar Khan on Friday, after the video of him attempting to steal from the ATM and sticking his tongue out at the camera went viral.

This is how cruel this world is. Poor thieves like him die but bigger thieves like Zardari, Mallaya or Nirav Modi roam freely.

There isnt any proof he was stealing.

He broke the machine to out his card which is wrong.

But why did the police torture him for that. This is soo sad

Oh no. Poor guy. His photo was hilarious I thought. Their ego killed him.

In pakistan there are times when the internet system is down or the server of the cards company is down hence cards often get stuck in the machine for 10-15 minutes.

Most people in pakistan dont know that the machine will spit out the card after 15 minutes if it is mot processing

I think thats why he just took the screen apart.

Also everyone knows the cash is in the bottom vault. Thr top is the computer system

A murder case was registered against three police officials on Monday for allegedly torturing to death Salahuddin Ayubi, a robbery suspect who was arrested after his video of breaking open an ATM machine, making faces and sticking his tongue out at the CCTV camera had gone viral.

The case was registered on a complaint of Ayubi's father against City A-Division's Station House Officer Mehmoodul Hassan and investigation officers Sub-Inspector Shafaat Ali and Assistant Sub-Inspector Matloob Hussain. Ayubi had died in police custody on Sunday.

Ayubi's father Muhammad Afzaal, in a first information report (FIR) lodged in the City A-Division police station of Rahim Yar Khan, where the deceased had been detained, stated that his son was mentally disabled and had been out of touch with him for a while. According to the FIR, since the deceased was mentally ill, Afzaal had tattooed Ayubi's name and address on his son's arm for identification purposes.

Afzaal said that he was not told about Ayubi's arrest by the police and came to know about his son's death through media on Sunday. Upon hearing the news, he tried to contact the police but received no information after which Afzaal, along with two of his nephews, came to Rahim Yar Khan, where he found out that Ayubi had been arrested for theft and was allegedly killed during interrogation.

The complainant further said that police had conducted Ayubi's post-mortem examination without informing the family.

The FIR was registered under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Ayubi, a resident of Gujranwala, was arrested in Rahim Yar Khan when he was caught stealing from an ATM machine on Friday. On Sunday morning, he was reported dead. According to the district police officer's spokesperson Zeeshan Randhawa, Ayubi was behaving like a "mad man" in lockup when he suddenly became unwell. He said that the man was unconscious when he was shifted to the emergency ward of Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

While talking to reporters today, Afzaal said that his son had been arrested on multiple occasions earlier, but was always released due to his medical condition. Afzaal's legal counsel Usman Khawar Ghuman expressed hope that the nominated persons would be arrested and justice will be done.

Meanwhile, the focal person of Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital, Rana Ilyas Ahmed, told Dawn that samples of Ayubi's corpse had been sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory Lahore. He added that it will take a month to prepare a final post-mortem report.

Ahmed did not comment on whether Ayubi's body had been handed over to the family.

As per Randhawa, Ayubi was dead when he was brought to the hospital. According to the focal person for the hospital, the director of the emergency ward, Dr Burhan Mustafa, could not comment on the condition in which he was brought to the hospital.

A video of Ayubi had gone viral on social media a few days ago in which he could be seen robbing an ATM in Faisalabad and sticking his tongue out in jest at both the camera in the corner of the booth and the one installed in the machine itself.

This is just terribly sad.He wasnt even stealing. It was his own card.It was definitely wrong what he did but they cant torture him for that. They just cant.
The video where he is asking the police about where they learnt to torture like that is heartbreaking.Someone needs to hold the police accountable.

I think he had attitude problem and probably didn't cooperate with cops. Subcontinental cops can be quite brutal.

Watched two heart breaking videos. The first where he asks the policemen where they learned to torture and the second one where Salahuddin’s father is seen kissing the dead body of his son.

Six police officers, including a sub-inspector, were nominated in a criminal case for allegedly torturing a man, identified as Amir, to death in Lahore, it emerged on Tuesday.

According to a first information report (FIR) lodged on the complaint of the victim's brother, Amir — who worked as a gardener in Lahore's P.F Colony — was summoned at North Cantt police station by Sub-Inspector Zeeshan on August 28. He was then taken to an unknown location, where he was subjected to torture.

According to the victim's brother, Amir had been called by Zeeshan in connivance with a civilian, Rana Mohammad Hanif, who has also been nominated in the FIR.

Meanwhile, Amir's family approached the police station after they were told that Zeeshan had called the deceased, but could not meet the sub-inspector. On September 2, Zeeshan and two unidentified officers handed over Amir, who was suffering from serious injuries, to his family. He was taken to the Services Hospital, where he passed away, the FIR stated.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Arif Nawaz Khan took notice of the incident and ordered that a case be registered against SI Zeeshan, Investigation Officer Nasir Baig and four other officers and asked for a detailed report to be submitted within a day.

Police have arrested Baig and North Cantt police station's Station House Officer Khurram Gul, while Zeeshan is at large.

This is the third such case that has come to light in the past week. On Sunday, a man who was said to be mentally disabled, had died in police custody in Rahim Yar Khan. On the same day, a middle-aged man had passed away in Lahore after allegedly being tortured by Gujjarpura police in an illegal torture cell that was unearthed last month.

IGP Punjab had expressed his displeasure and released a handout on Monday with clear instructions to all the field officers that “no officer will be spared if such crime was reported in any part of the province”.

I think the cops had an attitude problem and a superiority complex, and that's why now they're gonna get the rope. The subcontinental justice system can be quite brutal.

The poor guy was mentally disabled, which is also evident from his behavior. I cant even imagine how heartless humans are in our society.

Agreed. He seemed like mentally unstable.

He should've received a jail sentence. This was too much.

If he was mentally disabled, he doesn't even qualify for a jail sentence. Society is acceptable of fellow humans not in the right mind to make mistakes like these, and there was no human harmed by his actions it was just a freakin ATM which, I am sure was insured.

What the cops did was really wrong. But, we shouldn't glorify stealing. If this man has indeed stolen, he should've received punishment. But, this particular punishment was too much.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has written a letter to the Lahore High Court's chief justice to constitute a judicial commission to investigate suspect Salahuddin Ayubi's death, his spokesperson confirmed.

The spokesperson, Dr Shahbaz Gill, said the Punjab CM had requested the LHC to constitute a judicial commission to "judicially probe the tragic incident of Salahuddin Ayubi", a mentally disabled man who was arrested in Rahim Yar Khan and allegedly died while in police custody.

Salahuddin Ayubi was arrested late last month after a video of him — allegedly stealing from an automated teller machine (ATM) in Faisalabad and then sticking his tongue out at the camera — went viral on social media.

Punjab government requests judicial inquiry into custodial death of Salahuddin Ayubi

Merely a day later, however, it was reported that the suspected ATM thief had died while in custody of the Punjab police.

Ayubi's family, who say he was suffering from a mental condition, claim he died from custodial torture.

Activist Jibran Nasir, on the other hand, had further shared the "pictures taken by Salahuddin's family of his body before burial", which reportedly showed that the deceased's home address and number were tattooed on his arm in case he got lost.

Separately, earlier today, a first information report (FIR) was registered against the police officers involved in the incident, provincial authorities said, adding that all three were suspended.

According to reports, a murder case was also registered against the three police officers, including the station house officer (SHO) who was in charge of Ayubi.

The provincial government said it was waiting for the postmortem report to be released to determine the authenticity of the charges against the police officers and will proceed forward accordingly.

The case had drawn public outcry after horrifying videos surfaced on social media, the recent one showing Punjab police officers beating and humiliating Ayubi.

A day prior, a horrifying video had surfaced, depicting Punjab police officers beating and humiliating Ayubi, using abusive words to intimidate him.

In a sickening display of abuse of power, the police officers were also seen asking Ayubi to stick out his tongue for their amusement, apparently oblivious to his mental and physical conditions.

Ayubi had appeared to be in extreme pain and was struggling to comprehend the situation he was in.

The late suspect was mute and mentally-challenged. He was reportedly suffering from a health condition and was rushed to a hospital when his condition deteriorated where he later died.

His body was handed over to his father for burial on Thursday, reports on social media suggested.
