Citing Kohli’s record in the Indian Premier League, Gambhir said a skipper’s effectiveness is tested when you don’t have the services of several talented players.

Virat Kohli looks an effective captain in the international arena simply because he has got two successful captains like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the side, former India opener Gautam Gambhir said.

Dhoni is considered as one of India’s greatest captains having won two World Cups while Rohit has been a very successful franchise skipper leading Mumbai Indians to an unprecedented four IPL titles.

“Still a long way to go for him (Kohli). Kohli was very good in the last World Cup (in England) but he has a long way to go. He captains so well in international cricket because he has got Rohit Sharma, he had M.S. Dhoni for a long time,” Gambhir told reporters after interacting with the students of a university on Thursday.

Citing Kohli’s record in the Indian Premier League, Gambhir said a skipper’s effectiveness is tested when you don’t have the services of several talented players.

“Captaincy credentials are noticed when you are leading a franchise, when you do not have other players supporting you,” said Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles.

“I have been honest whenever I have spoken about this. See what Rohit Sharma has achieved for Mumbai Indians, see what Dhoni has achieved for Chennai Super Kings. If you compare that with RCB, the results are there for everyone to see”, the cricketer-turned politician said.

Gambhir also backed limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma to open the batting in the Test format.

“I think K.L. Rahul has been given a longer run. It is time for Rohit to open the batting in Test cricket. If you pick him in the squad, he has to be a part of the playing XI. If he does not fit your playing XI, no point in picking him in the squad of 15 or 16. He is too good a player to be sitting on the bench.”

Gambhir revealed that he thought about quitting cricket in 2007 after he was overlooked for the ODI World Cup squad.

“In 2007, when I missed the 50-over World Cup, that was the lowest moment in my cricketing career. I had given up on cricket. Before that, I had missed both U-15 and U-19 World Cups.

“In 2007, I thought I was the closest to playing the World Cup, but when they did not include me in the squad, I had almost given up on cricket,” Gambhir said.

However, in the same year, India were crowned champions of the maiden T20 World Cup in in South Africa with Gambhir finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament.

“Then I was chosen in World T20 in 2007 and I got dismissed for a duck in the first match against Pakistan. But as fate has it, I finished as the leading run-scorer in the World Cup and we ended up winning the tournament so one should never give up,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir said that he wanted to face Shane Warne in international cricket. He added that he only played against the leg-spinner in the IPL and he did not find it that tough.

“I wished I could have faced Shane Warne in international cricket. I only played against him in Indian Premier League (IPL) and I did not find it that difficult,” Gambhir said.

Talking about the state of cricket in Delhi, Gambhir said that budding cricketers don’t get much help from associations and selection committee.

“In Delhi, you do not get help from many people, the association and selection committee also does not help that much, so people understand that one must work hard in order to stand out among the crowd.”

That was very obvious in the WC. I guess Ghambir has been watching the same games as all of us here. There is a one Indian worshiper here who will disagree though. He will say Kohli is better Captain than Imran ever was.

Kohli is the greatest Asian Test captain of all time and he didn’t need Dhoni and Rohit. This notion that Kohli can only captain in Dhoni’s presence is just lazy.

Gambhir is not wrong there.

Even though MSD is now a liability, he was a great captain.

i agree that he was a better test captain compared to dhoni because he puts himself on the scorecards to score a hundred atleast when he steps in to bat , the part of his batting is contributing a lot to his aggressive style of captaincy in tests + he is not discarding players quickly based on 1 or 2 bad series or matches which is also good in the form of team building...

That's because he doesn't have to do much thinking on the feet, much of what bowlers do is already planned between coaches, bowler and Captain, a bad over or 2 don't change things much and kohli is really fortunate to have the best ever Indian pace bowling contingent.

LoI's are different, things change in space of above or two, coach can't do much, its captain's job to think and react quickly. Kohli has no such ability. Which is why the only multilateral tournaments that we have won in recent times have been when kohli wasn't present same reason why rcb haven't won a single ipl under him.

His T-20 IPL captaincy record is below par. Tbh i will be interested to see Kohli's ODI and T-20 leadership and outcomes when Dhoni is no longer there

Dhoni and Rohit aren’t around in tests, Kohli is doing fine there lol. Kohli is a great captain, he isn’t perfect. But I think he has been a very good captain for India overall.

Yes we seen his greatness in England and South Africa with his team selections

LOL what other Indians captains done for all these decades..Before kohli India is a minnow test team outside Asia.. Kohli was by far the best indain test captain hands down..

Kohli is a great batsman and a great spokesperson. I want him to stay as India’s captain because I like him. But I don’t think he is tactically the best captain...

Main issue I see (which maybe he has gotten past now) is that he ‘tinkers’. In a way, when you have a proper elite batsman as captain, they are used to tinkering with their own game and making little improvements all the time, but when you are skipper, you need to give players consistency in selection to allow them to perform. Rahane’s dip in form came when he was being rested and played, Pujara also struggled when he was in and out. With fast bowlers you can rotate more as having a rest refreshes them, but batsmen should be allowed to find their feet.

None of the other captains had a bowling lineup close to what he has, yet we have won test series in England , drew series in Australia and SA all in last 15 years, his stupidity cost us a series win in SA, his big headed selections cost us the 1st test in England.

I agree with u regarding selections, but other than that he is fine..u mentioned we have best bowling lineup, at the same time you forgot we have worst batting lineup also outside Asia..we won in Australia because batting stepped in, where it didn't happen in Eng and sa..

I disagree, the pitches in tests have been more and more bowler friendly outside of Australia in recent times, we don't have the quality that we had during fab 4 era but we definitely aren't the worst, most teams have 1 or at most 2 good batsman when not in their home conditions, same goes for us.
