Virat Kohli to step down as India's T20I Captain after the T20 World Cup

What is happening?

Virat made to resign, Shastri and others shown the door, New T20 captain, return of Anil Kumble... Did something happen lately which triggered these changes? Something behind close doors?

Did Virat and Shastri step on someone's toes?

It seems clear that BCCI feel that Kohli has too much powers and is now actively taking steps to curtail his power, not a bad decision but these rumors of Kumble is surely far fetched?

I mean Punjab Kings are regularly amongst the worst teams in the IPL making some bizarre decisions throughout(this season saw the benching of Ravi Bishnoi for some reason).

I like Rohit Sharma as a T20 cpatain from what I have seen of his captaincy of Mumbai Indians in IPL T20.
Has an ultra cool relaxed persona and acts like a calming influence on the team members.
Just knows when to change gears and become a seriousy fierce attacker. Also licences the likes of Boult, Bumrah, Pollard SKY, Ishaan and Hardik to go all out on attack mode.

Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's T20I captain after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup has left the cricketing world divided. While some did not see it coming, others welcomed the call for the very same reason Kohli took it – workload management. Former India captain Kapil Dev belongs to the former, as he admitted that Kohli's decision to relinquish India's T20 captaincy came to him as a surprise.

"I never thought of anything like this. But these days, I find it strange that cricketers decide themselves what to do and what not. I think selectors too should have a say on this. And I feel the cricketers should take to the selectors and the board before they take such a big decision. I think it's very important. There was no need to announce it so early. He is a brilliant player. Even if a season went bad, it doesn't change that he is a great cricketer and a great captain," Kapil told ABP news.

Kohli mentioned on his social media post that the decision was taken keeping the leadership group – which coach Ravi Shastri and teammate Rohit Sharma are a part of – in the loop and that the India captain had also spoken to BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah regarding the same. Irrespective of the decision, Kapil understands it's a personal call and wished Kohli the best.

"If he has taken this decision and spoken to the selectors, it's ok. That's his personal decision. I can't really say anything. Cricketers these days make their own decisions. Just want to say 'Well done. You have served the country so well. I wish you luck for the rest of your career’," Kapil added.

Kapil acknowledged Kohli's decision to come up with an announcement this big, saying it takes a player and captain of his calibre a lot of courage. In a minimum of leading the country in 30 T20I matches, Kohli is the world's third most successful captain, behind Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan and Sarfaraz Ahmed of Pakistan. He's led led India to 27 wins from 45 matches, with a win percentage of 65.11.

"I think we should respect the honesty. He said he doesn't want to captain in a format, which is a big thing. Dhoni did this. The only thing I find strange that these announcements are made through tweets. This I can't understand. Cricketers these days can say that I don't want to play beyond a certain point, or play only the IPL or only T20. They have the courage to say these things, so hats off to them," Kapil, India's first Cricket World Cup winning captain, said.

Some new sites are now reporting that BCCI will be approaching Anil Kumble for the role of head Coach after Shastri's tenure.
Looks like BCCI is planning to clip Kohli's wings.
Based on recent events we can't really neglect this news, something us definitely going on between BCCI and Kohli, if Kohli's resignation from t20 captaincy was a good move (politically) then BCCI is looking to pull an even bigger one.

Yeah...massive PR battles going on.

Kumble wasn't great as a coach in IPL so not sure what to make of it.

He has his strengths but does he have the modern cricket mindset?

Time will tell.

I don't know but why would you declare in advance that you'll be relinquishing captaincy post a series/tournament!

In the case of RCB, it simply doesn't make any sense. It only puts unimaginable pressure on the entire RCB setup and Kohli himself.

It doesn't make sense if Rohit is the new captain. Where is the new leadership after Kohli/Rohit? BCCI needs to think beyond 2023 WC.

And why do Kohli come with big letters about his decision? It isn't a retirement, he still has a job to do both in India team and IPL. Why does he want to make this decision seen an sacrifice which it isnt?

Why do you only see from that perspective?
It can also make a player play freely with nothing to lose and in kohli case he might leave on a high with a IPL crown, and same with ABD

a wise move
rohit should be the captain but i expect him to be a finch 2.0

Because it doesn't seem right. Looks very selfish. Look how RCB has started this UAE leg of IPL, they looked completely disorganized. I know it's just the start, still, signs are already ominous!

Teammates who may have been in awe/fear of Kohli may think that ok, this guy won't be our captain for too long now, why bother with what he says? Happens in the corporate sector all the time especially when a senior guy is retiring/leaving the company!

What harm would it have caused if Kohli declared after winning IPL/WT20 (perhaps) that he'll cease to be captain of any of the T20 units he is associated with?

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has quashed the rumours, saying there's no truth in them.

Rumours of a number of players complaining to the BCCI over Virat Kohli's captaincy have been afloat for a while. However, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal, has poured cold water on such talks.

First, it was Ravichandran Ashwin and then the duo of Ajinkya Rahane-Cheteshwar Pujara! Rumours of certain senior players complaining to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about Virat Kohli's captaincy have been afloat over the past few days. The board treasurer, Arun Dhumal, however, has ridiculed the said talks.

Initially, it was suggested that Ashwin had gone on to speak to the BCCI top brass over issues with Kohli's leadership and most recently, reports emerged that Rahane and Pujara were called up by the board secretary Jay Shah to get their verdict on Kohli's captaincy.

Putting the rumours to bed, Dhumal has gone on to record that no player, be it senior or junior, has complained to the BCCI about Kohli's captaincy. Despite floating rumours on the internet, no player has submitted a written or verbal complaint against the skipper over the past few days.

"The media must stop writing this rubbish. Let me say this on the record that no Indian cricketer has made any complaint to the BCCI - written or verbal. The BCCI can't keep answering every false report that keeps appearing. The other day, we saw some reports saying there will be changes in India's World Cup squad. Who said that?", BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal was quoted as saying the Times of India on Wednesday.

Soon after Kohli announced his decision to step down as the captain of India's T20 team after the upcoming T20 World Cup, rumours of the BCCI wanting him to relinquish the responsibility surfaced. Some even suggested that India head coach Ravi Shastri had asked Kohli to leave white-ball captaincy a few months ago.

In the past few days, suggestions of a number of senior players being unhappy with Kohli's captaincy were made. Even certain names were revealed in a few media reports but none of the BCCI offices or officials has received any sort of complaint on the matter. In fact, Dhumal said that such rumours only do damage to Indian cricket.

"This kind of reporting harms Indian cricket more than anything else. We can understand if senior journalists - who have followed the game for a very long time and tracked it so devotedly - believe the Indian team should do this or do that. That's an opinion and we respect that. It's an observation and that's their job. I myself enjoy reading good reports. But to concoct tales and say this person said this or that person said, without substantiating it, is not done," Dhumal added.

Be it Kohli or the players whose names were mentioned in the rumours have not spoken anything over the matter yet. With the BCCI treasurer deciding to put the record straight, it is now clear that the rumours were without any substance.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said he was surprised after getting to know about Virat Kohli's decision to quit T20I captaincy. Ganguly insisted that the Indian cricket board did not put pressure on Kohli and that giving up captaincy was Kohli's own decision.

Speaking at Salaam Cricket 2021, Sourav Ganguly said he understood the reasoning behind Virat Kohli's decision to give up captaincy from the shortest format of the game. Ganguly highlighted that it's not easy leading a country like India in all 3 formats for such a long time, saying captains in the past, including himself, have felt burnt out at one particular point in time.

Virat Kohli announced last month that he would quit India's T20I captaincy after the World Cup in the UAE. He cited workload concerns and said his focus will be on leading India in ODis and Tests and that he would continue to play as a batsman in the shortest format of the game.

Notably, days after announcing the said decision, Kohli said he would give up Indian Premier League captaincy as well. Kohli ended his reign as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore without a title in the IPL as the former finalists were knocked out in the play-offs.

Kohli will lead India at the T20 World Cup but the showpiece event in the UAE will be his last assignment as captain of the Indian T20I side.

"I was surprised (that Virat Kohli decided to step down as T20 captain). This decision must have been taken only after the England tour and it is his decision. There was no pressure from our end, we didn't tell him anything," Ganguly told India Today.

"We don't do things like that because I myself have been a player so I understand. It is very difficult to be a captain in all formats for this long.

"I was a captain for six years, it looks good from the outside, there is respect and all that. But you get burnt out on the inside and it happens to any captain. Not just to Tendulkar or Ganguly or Dhoni or Kohli but to the captain that will come up next as well. It is a tough job."

Meanwhile, Ganguly also brushed aside concerns over Virat Kohli's dip in form, saying every player, even the greatest in the business, will go through lean periods in their long careers.

"This happens (dip in Kohli's form). Virat has been playing for about 11 years, not every season can be great. He is human not a machine. So I am not surprised. His graph has gone up so high, then it came down, then it went even higher and that is when you see a player like Virat. If you play for a long time this sort of up and down will happen," he added.

Kohli will lead India in their T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan on Sunday, October 24. The team will be hoping that their captain, who hasn't hit an international hundred since 2019, will be back at his best with the bat

Team India's chief selector Chetan Sharma has confirmed that the BCCI had asked Virat Kohli not to step down as the T20 captain just before the start of the World Cup. A month before the start of the ICC event, the former skipper had announced his decision to leave captaincy after the end of the tournament.

As per Kohli, no one from the board had asked him not to step down. But Chetan has said that the selectors were shocked and had asked him to take the decision after T20 WC.

"All selectors felt that leaving captaincy will have an effect on the World Cup campaign. We all told Virat Kohli that this could be discussed after the World Cup. Virat Kohli is a national treasure. We respect him a lot. In the end, we only want the benefit of Indian cricket," Sharma said in the presser.

"It was a hard decision for the selectors, but selectors have to take hard decisions. You take hard decisions even while making the Playing XI. I know Virat is an important player for us in the coming days and coming years. With the World Cup coming up, that news [of Kohli wanting to step down as T20I captain] surprised us. Everyone in the meeting said that you should think about your decision and we can speak about it after the World Cup. We all felt that it will affect the World Cup...
