Virat Kohli will not think twice to ‘reciprocate’ if Australia begin to sledge

An India versus Australia series Down Under has seen many heated battles in the past and India captain Virat Kohli in particular has been notorious for having such verbal duels with the Aussies. This year, things have changed. Ever since the ball-tampering scandal that led to the suspensions of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, Australian cricket has fallen to deplorable levels and has gained the sympathy of the cricket fraternity.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis had categorically stated that his team will not engage in sledging the Australians over the ball-tampering incident during the Cape Town Test in March this year, ahead of the ODI series which the Proteas won.

Kohli, however, said that his team will not begin a sledging war, but won’t think twice to fight back if Australia start a war when the marquee series Down Under begins with the first T20 International on November 21 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

“When it comes to getting engaged in an argument on the field or you are in a fight, as people want to call it excitedly, I’ve been completely okay with playing without an altercation,” Kohli said at the pre-departure press conference at Mumbai on Thursday.

“I am very happy within my own space, so on a personal level, I don’t find the need to go and find these things anymore. I have enough belief in my abilities that I can play without a reason to pump myself up. Those were very immature things I used to feed on in my early days of my career so that I can get pumped up and then I don’t necessarily feel all that pressure.”

“Now, being captain of the team, you literally have no room for anything else, but to think of what the team wants all the time. So, you don’t find the need for all these things at all. They will not give it back, we were always the ones giving it back, we were never the ones starting anything. So, as long as it doesn’t start, we have no problem in just focussing on our game and just doing what we need to do.

“We don’t necessarily have to go and look out for something. If they want to play a certain way, we will reciprocate in that way. That’s how the game of cricket goes, but at the same time, in our own minds, we have to keep it competitive and not let our energies drop. That will be our main focus,” he added.

The Indian team will depart for Australia on Friday where they will play three T20Is, four Tests and the three one-dayers. The four-Test series begins with the first Test on December 6 at Adelaide.

Good to see Virat still hurting from the sledging he's faced from Aussies. They sledged him brutally in 2017 series in India and even in 2014-15 despite the series being played immediately after Phill Hughes death. Glad he hasn't allowed it to be a one way traffic.

Wonder how the Aussies are going to behave though with all the talk around changed behaviour and mindset etc.

Don't expect anything different. Can't change the playing culture in one year.

Aussies play rough and tough and they will continue to do so. Not that there is any thing wrong with that. :)

India - Australia.

This is a series where sparks will fly around as per usual. This time there might be some 'Elite' sledging if we're lucky.

I do not like the good kid attitude. Why wait for them to start teasing you? Man up and get in their skin. Asian good boy attitude does not work. There is nothing wrong STARTING banters as long as it is not too offensive.

Not many players these days have this alpha mentality especially not a beta male like Virat. Players like Shoaib Akhtar are real alphas that will do this.

When a batsman starts getting into verbal contests with the bowler, I start to worry. All it takes is one mistake for the bowler to have the last laugh. Secondly the Australian's in the previous series prepared some really flat wickets. I question whether they will make the same mistake again.

My friend, it is the heart, not size I believe. Miandad was short in stature but had guts to get into the thickest of skins. Pakistanis overall have been timid for many years now. If I am batting and a bowler hurls the ball at me as if trying to run me out while me standing at the crease, I would never show my teeth in reaction. I will get to the face of the bowler. Controlled anger is good. Just like a bowler can hurt your psyche playing false shot, a bat can do the same to a bowler err the line and length.

I would love Sarfu to a say a few words every now and then to a bat. A keeper can irk the heck outtta bat and these things should be a part of coaching.

To elaborate what you said: Real alphas never get in unnecessary and childish nonsense. They remained focused and deliver phaintas to their adversaries. For example, Aussies sledged and sledged SRT and he kept on scoring 100s and more 100s. Until they decided to shut up :warne

Shoaib Akhtar's talk to batsmen was to get in their head and make them err. I've seen Shoaib bowl an offcutter (120kph) right after a 155+kph rib cracker. See, remaining in situation's control is the key and ultimately he won many contests against ATG batsmen. He was a really smart bowler. Pace without brains is useless. Even now after his retirement, my man is hustling on random channels and making the moolah off Indians :akhtar All his true fans know what's up there :P

Kohli starts doing weird stuff. Now I admit he is a top batsman but him sticking out the tongue and cursing (right before Afridi smashed 2 papa boom booms to seal the deal) comes to mind. The guy should control himself. Never go full stupid. It's embarrassing, even as a Pakistani. I won't call Kohli a beta but leader of men he ain't.

Aussies are Aussies. They call 'em convicts for a reason :yk. It suits them.

Kohli just retaliates as he stated. Showing his tongue was part of celebration and was not directed at opposition.

hmm. I don't watch India unless they play against Pakistan or maybe England. Maybe the tongue-sticking was an extreme example. It is a bunch of things VK does really. Nothing wrong with an aggressive behavior on field, per se. But when he overdoes it looks ugly.

India should concentrate on cricket and not get involved in these sledging games. Don't see Australia getting too involved in such antics after sandpaper gate.

Any person with some self respect will give it back hard to the Aussies. Just wish I was at the other end of the Aussies having a go! Oh these Aussies are as human as anyone else who can be hurt. Still remember Ramnaresh Sarwan getting stuck in to Glenn McGrath!:wahab2

He should really focus on his captaincy. India already got humiliated in England. 20 year old Sam Curran gave them nightmares.

Smith's career is made on such tracks. Why won't they?

Oh Think twice.I don't think he thinks at all before doing his monkey acts.Nobody gives it back to him because of fear of losing IPL contracts.
I am sure he will start the sledging rather than Aussies.

Spot on man.Guy scores century and starts abusing.I don't know whether he abuses himself or others. No cricketer gives out such filthy language on scoring a century and why u have to use such words on scoring a century.

On the other hand tries to be a saint on social media

Someone pls remind him the result of the last India-Australia series in Australia or the last time India toured Eng and SA. Haha......

I would say hopefully he doesn't get carried away with sledging and emotions getting the better of him that he gets out...

But knowing Kohli, that type of stuff pushes him to perform even more. He feeds off of competition, fierceness, and challenge from opposition. He's ahead of his peers mainly off of that sort of frame.

Don't think Aussies will sledge him much, no Warner, no Smith. Rest of these guys are snot nosed kids playing their first few games. He's a veteran to them.

In the end what matters the most is the series win which we always fail to win in Australia. Nobody will remember these verbal battles. :inti

Exactly was mainly saying when he comes to bat he should not take any nonsense from aussie players as a captain he needs to be more sensible when his team is fielding

These types of headlines headlines make me cringe, just go out there and let your bat do the talking.

three things he has to "correct"

Repeat or score impactful series deciding runs in aus, erasing the poor record vs aus in Ind.
Do not take whimsical decisions. Stick to best combinations.
Inculcate seriousness into team members to make them realize what a first of its kind victory will be.

Hope he succeeds.

You are there to play tests and hopefully win... You have failed in England and SA, so now please focus on cricket, nobody gives a fig about what you will do if you are abused....
