After winning IPL for RCB as a player

So how do we describe the tale of above two emotions?

Is this a case of he was too immature back then or winning an IPL trophy first time in 18 years is more special?

You don’t plan these things.

This IPL means a lot to him. He started 18 years ago as a youngster, same franchise for all these years and he saw all his star colleagues in the Indian team win multiple IPLs over the years. This is deeply personal

That sight was disgusting and it took me a while to forgive him even though I felt he was desperately trying to cover the hurt of losing to Pak in a final.

He was untouchable in 2017. Individually he was on top of the world.

The last few years of his life have been tough considering loss of leadership and world class form. It’s a fair emotion considering the timing.

Winning IPL with RCB means more to him than winning with India not because he values the RCB shirt more, but because of the following reasons:

Kohli was already a Indian legend when he had lost the CT Final. Winning that tournament was not going to define his legacy in an Indian shirt.

However, when it comes to the IPL, you don't have much of a legacy as an IPL player if you haven't won the trophy, and Kohli has been carrying that burden for way too long now. He could have left numerous times to go to a more successful franchise, but he remained loyal and wanted to do with RCB.

Had he won it few years earlier, his reaction would have been different, but at this stage of his career, it hits different because he knew time was running out for him, and this was one of his last chances at glory. It is not surprising that he was overwhelmed by emotions. It was more of a relief than pure joy and excitement.

I think this is the right moment to retire from IPL also.

Or go for a farewell tour next season?

I’m 100% sure he won’t drag it like Dhoni

2027 ODI WC is still 2 years from now.

Can he carry on the form till then

It was the 2008 IPL, the first ever IPL taking place. I remember watching this RCB team, since you know Misbah was part of this team.

During one match of RCB, I remember how the Indian comentators were going gaga that look this is Kohli. The u19 winning captain. I still remember the way they were hyping him up so i was always curious if he was ever good enough.

Long story short, he never switch teams, played for RCB from day 1 and now has won them an IPL.

The cockiest ever U-19 player to enter Indian cricket. Nobody thought he would survive with that attitude. 18 years later we all still facepalm at his antics. Just the last match he was mocking a youngster. But he’s been an unbreakable man since Day 1. Flawed and imperfect Yes but absolutely unbreakable and super confident.

People are giving too much credit for sticking with RCB. He was the primary driver behind the RCB brand and fan following and he was rewarded very handsomely for sticking to them. He would have been foolish to switch to another franchise.

18th IPL
Jersey number 18
03-06-2025 .... all digits add ut to 18

Wasit destiny? :afridi

Very well said. His emotions were due to the effort he had put in RCB. He has given it in 2016 and still went trophy less. RCB was a meme team from 2017 to 2022 and still kept putting his effort in. He fully deserved it and emotions are understandable

He won’t retire until 2027 WC. He need to play competitively as he has now retired in T20s and Tests

I think people outside India don't realize how crazy RCB fanbase is....they are the most passionate fanbase of IPL despite never winning a trophy until this year. I know RCB fans who care about IPL but don't care much about national team. Bangalore has gone crazy tonight after the win. Kohli also has been with RCB for 18 seasons...he was loyal despite never winning title. If he wanted, he could have easily left for a different franchise but he stayed with RCB despite lot of heartbreaks. So winning the trophy after all these years of heartbreaks is kind of a perfect moment for Virat

This was similar to Messi's moment of glory with Argentina winning the football WC final

Disagree.

FIFA world cup is far more prestigious than any cricket trophy let alone IPL trophy.

Comparing IPL to FIFA WC is like comparing French fries to a juicy beef steak. :inti

Kohli won 2 CT's, he already won it in 2013. There was no reason to be ultra sad for that 2017 loss.

This IPL has been the only white ball trophy that's been eluding him. That gorilla is off his back now.

Hope he retires after this, PSL is open for him, that will be the true test of his abilities.

It was not meant for literal comparison

What @Savak meant was like FIFA WC was missing from Messi's career, IPL trophy was missing from Kohli. So the emotions of winning them are same.

It was not a comparison between IPL and FIFA WC

:facepalm

Virat Kohli is crying on the field just like someone in the Time Pass thread is crying over being called an andhbhakt. Absolutely tragic scenes. :kp :inti

You are equating Football World Cup with Lallu Panju League? :inti

2017 Virat Kohli had already won a WC and a Ct in 2013. Had it been WT20 probably his emotions would have been different, I remember he was heartbroken when we lost one of the WT20’s where he was the top scorer.

Just like how I remember Sunil Gavaskar was supporting and cheering for Pakistan team in 1992 because he was friends with Imran Khan and also with 1983 he had a sense of been there done that with what was one of the greatest sports wins/ upsets of all time.

Let’s be honest even we were upset only because we felt we lost to somewhat of a middle tier team like Pakistan and it was a huge upset. The players probably didn’t care much.

However this win is a bigger monster. 18 years, 3 finals and many knockouts later and maybe what is the final frontier for him as a player- he finally did it.

Won’t read too much into it even though yes that 2017 picture at time was offensive but since then a lot has happened to more than make up for it 👍

A football WC win is several levels upwards of a IPL trophy win.

And Kohli fans may not like it but Messi as a footballer is in the top tier while Kohli is not even amongst top-10 cricketers ever.

On topic, really happy for Kohli. Clearly the IPL title meant so much for him and we are no ones to bash him for that.

Happy for him. He has given everything to cricket and deserves all the success in the world. Truly a role model for any aspiring cricketer on and off the field. Surprisingly, this was the one few things he hadn't won, so glad he got to check it off the list in-time, because his professional career is very close to the end.

Gutted for Preity Zinta though. Like Kohli, she has been with Punjab for 18 straight years but success is still eluding her team. Unlike Kohli, she can't even get on ground and play for her team, she can only watch from team dugout or stands.

Happy for him and for RCB. What a moment. Saw ABD and Gayle sharing his happiness.

They should not have been allowed too. These two were failures and only represented the prior failed campaigns. Kohli was big hearted to allow them to celebrate with him but the RCB dug out should have asked these two attention seeking clowns to stay clear.
