"Wahab Riaz has not won us a game in two years" : Mickey Arthur

Pakistan cricket doesn't like the truth or facts.

Sooner or later Mickey will upset someone and pay the consequences.

Always ends up that way.
I hope, for the sake of our cricket, it doesn't happen. Mickey seems to have good chemistry with the management and players and someone who doesn't sugarcoat. Top man for the job, specially for Pakistan.

Good stuff from Mickey. Question is, why doesn't he do the same for Hafeez and Malik?

Malik, practically as a matter of fact, trains extremely well by all accounts and is one of the fittest athletes to have represented Pakistan from the start of his career, so not sure why you'd think he should be guilty of the same metric...

For eight years posters here have demanded our coaches and captains publicly hold the senior players accountable. Now Mickey Arthur has done that and yet we're still complaining ?

I am not complaining nor am I defending Wahab. All I'm saying is public bashing of players to this degree by the head coach is not justifiable no matter what anyone says. He could've easily just said the exact same points listed in OP to Wahab personally instead of making it public. All this does is increase chances of a divide to happen between the coach and the players. No one likes being humiliated publicly, and that's exactly what Mickey did to Wahab. The coach has power in the team, and he should merely use it, not abuse it.

How is it publicly humiliating when it is the truth? Mickey is right. Wahab has not won us a game in 2 years. Its not as a personal attack, its a professional attack as regards to his performance which has been insufficient for International cricket as a player.

It can be publicly humiliating even if it's the truth. Just because something is true doesn't mean it can't be used to publicly humiliate someone.

What I have seen of Wahab is that he always releases the pressure (eg Asia cup 2016,Asia cup 2012,CT 2017,England series) which has been created by Amir and co.He is a bit like Ishant.May work in Tests but should never play odi,T20.

Wahab is a keeper in tests . On fast pitches or when the ball is reversing he is almost unplayable . He needs to be kept away from the LOI sides. Kinda harsh from Mickey but I really can't blame him . Wahab is a nice guy but his place in LOI's team is not justifiable .

Okay genius! Good luck for the series against England. Hopefully england destroy this team badly. They deserve this. Dropping the best test pacer is the way to go. Well done Mr. Mickey Arthur. So so disappointed!

After Wahab Riaz's performance against India in the Champions Trophy, almost everyone was humiliating him for that performance, the guy still ended up making a Crore rupees for being a part of the winning squad. This was not public humiliation rather than an assessment. Where he also menitoned it was a difficult decision to drop Riaz, a player who has been playing for a while needs to bring more to the table.

I hope this is the end of Wahab. I never really liked him as a cricketer. The fact that he does not work hard at his game (of which I was unaware) is one more reason not to.

EXACTLY THIS. He is just a bowling machine which can bowl fast and bouce.

Wahab is a bowler who does well in dry flat pitches

Been carrying dead wood in the team for far too long. About time, we get rid of all the TTFs. Hope we dont get to see the likes of Hafeez and Akmal back in the team either

Wahab has bowled well in patches as a test bowler, but it has not ever resulted in a performance like the one Abbas gave in the Lords Test. Biggest reason for our victory and central to England's batting demise. Mickey and Inzamam stand vindicated in this decision

It does not take a genius to figure out that Wahab is not a test caliber bowler. Or ODI. Or t20.

Micky has been proven right about Wahab. Remember, Wahab is 32 - not young for a fast bowler. It was the right time to ditch him because his performances had been falling - most likely due to the work ethic that was mentioned.

Come on Micky!

Akmals sorted.
Wahab sorted.
Shezad on the periphery - hopefully, he won't play again.
Hafeez dropped from tests. Now drop him from ODIs please.
Malik - drop him and the revolution is complete.

Afridi also retired.

The team would finally be free of poisonous prima donnas. Having a team of young, vibrant, talented, HARD WORKING players is what we want.

I completely agree with not selecting Wahab but when you select Rahat, that is trash even when compared to Wahab then it defeats the whole purpose.

Is this likely to change in this series?

Why bring him back? :23:

Good question.

Did he perform extraordinary good in the domestic after being dropped? Or are we just following the policy of dropping players and than selecting them again on random intervals?

Mickey the useless coach forgot that wahab single handedly made us win a test in the 4th innings against England in uae when nothing was happening. Mickey needs to ask for 2 proper spinners in uae if he wants to win otherwise stop crying these crocodile tears.

I assume you're talking about FC cricket.

Well, after the SL Tests last year, he played 5 matches in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, taking 9 wickets @ 40.

This season, he was busy with CPL for most of the domestic season (so far) but played one QEA match before this series. Figures were 0/32 and 1/11.

Still proceeds to play him for some inexplicable reason

he's done, exhausted totally

absolutely blunder to select him and then play him

Wahab Should not play Tests anymore. He can bowl a good spell once in 2 or 3 games but that shouldn't be the reason he is picked to play for Pakistan. He hasn't played any FC game and has been playing T20s for the last couple of months. Not sure why he is back in the team.

Is Junaid in the squad? Surely he plays next Test if so.

Struggled during final of QEA xup but wickets not conducive to his bowling?

Save to say Wahab Raiz International career is over?

Its seems he is not in the plan for worldcup 2019 which is why he is not selected for aus series. He is overlooked on some one like abbas and husnain which must be dishearten for him and i see no motivation for him to push for pakistan after worldcup. he is 33 already should look for leagues around the world to earn some money for himself

Well he doesnt really deserve it does he?

I am surprised Wahab Riaz and Hasan Ali are not playing for Pakistan in the coming ODI series

I'm not surprised players from other teams want him to play. It would be like feeding time at the zoo for those 10 overs.

This likes of Wahab, Shehzad and Akmal using foreign players to lobby for their selection.

I am not a fan of Wahab Riaz and I felt he lived on the legacy of the Watson spell for too long and ironically did his bowling immense damage but I got to say that he is bowling as well as he has done for a long while. The question then is- can he bowl this quick and this well for the full 10 overs.

Yeah that is the big question. He was averaging close 150 KPH today, but that was only 4 overs and sort of a semi final. Lasting even 7 overs with those speeda and control is challenging.

He certainly seems to have a bee in his bonnet. But if he bowls anything like he is and over 10 overs, then he is not out of the consideration.

I would definately take him over Shinwari. At least, Riaz can also hold the bat if required.

We need new ball bowlers.

Already got to many old ball specialists in Amir, Hasan and Shinwari (because he is selected for the Aus series)

In great form and still maintaining his pace, he should be recalled for WC.

Definitely should go to the World Cup. The problem is who do you drop? Possibly Amir.

His struggles with ODIs is because of two new balls which he will still have to face unless we are going with 4 seamers where he can be kept aside til 25th over. He is effective when ball is reversing but as a third seamer he will have to ball within first 15 overs more often than not and that is where he leaks runs like no tomorrow.

He is good enough to play in T20s and Tests but in ODIs only as a 4th seamer and coming onto ball only after 20-25 overs old when a ball is 10-15 overs old (As their are two new balls) as with his wrist condition he cant control the new ball.

Somebody should tell him that Hasan is being rested. This question is only valid for Wahab.

His problem has more been his fitness. He's lost a lot of weight and his movement through the crease is now much more fluid.

As always T20s are enough to get someone into the national side :)). Have posters forgotten the amount of times he has embarrassed us?

He has not won us a game in two years,” Arthur said. “I expect players that have been around for a long time to be winning us games and setting standards. Otherwise we will invest in younger players who have long futures. We have good youngsters around. Dropping Wahab is a big decision but we have chosen a squad according to the time of year, country and conditions. The guys need to push themselves and get out of their comfort zones.” Wahab did undergo a fitness test, where he registered a score of 17.4, which qualifies as a passing mark. But Arthur wanted him to touch 19 – an unofficial benchmark set for a fast bowler. He was outdone by the newcomer Afridi, who scored 18. “I cannot fault Wahab when he has a ball in his hand but his work ethic around training is something needs to be looked at,” Arthur said. “I am changing the culture in this Pakistan environment and I am not interested in players doing just the bare minimum. I want players winning us games of cricket and pushing themselves to be the best they can be. This is a high-performance environment, not a environment where mediocrity is accepted. Unless you are winning games consistently, you are under pressure for your position.

What does Mickey have to say now?

What does Mickey have to say now?

Well he cant say anything because the team has lost its last 10 games. While the blame goes everyone, captain and selectors to bring back wahab so that mickey said after world cup "wahab has not won us a game in three years"

This is the only logical reason behind Wahab's selection.

Desperate times for Pakistan, call for desperate measures.

Took just one game to learn that nothing has changed. Wahab is back to his gunspray bowling. Any decent team will not find it hard to go at 10 RPO on his bowling.

Can the Wahab Riaz experiment end now?

So...is it over now? The guy went for 40 runs in less than 4 overs, looked toothless, bowled short and wide throughout and had no accuracy whatsoever.

This is the exact reason he was dropped years ago and is the exact reason he should not be in the side.

End it now please!

3.4 overs for 40 runs at a RR of 10.9

Good lord, if only his name was Junaid Khan and he wasn't a graduate of Aitchinson.

We are playing England next and I want to recall what happened the last time this guy bowled to English batsmen.

To be fair to him if we had scored 300+!then he was only going to ball after 25th over , never a new ball bowler

What about Hasan Ali today looked utterly clueless and gave almost the same number of runs as Wahab even he got the new ball. He tends to go under the radar these days. Long gone are the days that he took regular wickets for us with his miserly spells. Now days he is supper expensive and not able to provide any breakthroughs

He didn't look toothless, he got the Windies batsmen top edging bouncers and through the slips, could have had a couple of wickets easily on another day. Fielders could have took two catches if they were from another team.

But I expected this. He was picked for his reverse swing and hopefully to defend 300 runs not 105. If the wickets had been like this in the England series then maybe Junaid would have done better. The selectors based the selection of Wahab thinking they were going to be flat pitches like earlier games.

He got smacked today but can't read too much into the bowlers today because we were defending an almost impossible target. We had no runs to play with at all.

It was good that he was playing, helped speed up the torture ending.

We all know how utter.......this guy is. The fact that he made it back into the side shows this is the same old PCB.

Let's be entirely honest now, a short ball that may make the batsman look a little uncomfortable is not the same as bowling consistently or wicket taking deliveries. The guy was slogged for boundaries left right and center...as he has done his entire career.

And whats all this reverse swing talk, when was the last time he went through an international side with this mythical reverse swing of his?

He needs to be dropped and forgotten about forever now.

I don't think he bowled that badly today, as I said he could have picked up a couple of wickets, and if you were being honest you would acknowledge that as well.

I will wait until I've seen a couple of full games before writing anyone off or making judgements about reverse swing. If he is a let down I will be happy to say so, is that fair enough?
