Wahab Riaz takes indefinite break from red-ball cricket

Lahore, 12 September 2019:

Left-arm fast-bowler Wahab Riaz today confirmed he has withdrawn from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and has decided to take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket.

Wahab Riaz said: “After reviewing my past couple of years’ performances in red-ball cricket and the upcoming limited overs cricket, I have decided to take time off from first-class cricket.

“During this period, I will like to focus on 50-over and 20-over cricket, and continue to access my fitness for the longer version of the game. At a stage I feel I cannot only return but also perform with the red-ball, I would make myself available.

“The PCB had been trying to convince me to pursue my career with red-ball, but today I met them to convey my decision. I am grateful for their understanding and support.”

Wahab is 34 now. I think he is finished in red ball cricket.

Time for him to focus on T20 now.

The kind of surfaces Pakistan have been playing on were really tough on bowlers like Amir and Wahab. It ultimately broke their bodies as well as their confidence.

Jacket was a spent force anyway.
Surprised PCB was trying to convince him not to give up red ball cricket. The guy is 34.

Sensible decision, this way he can play white ball cricket for few more years.

vicky was a good performer on asian wickets. accurate and had reverse swing.

Who is supposed to bowl in Australia in ten weeks’ time?

Shaheen Shah Afridi, sure.

Mohammad Abbas at Adelaide yes, but not at Brisbane.

And who are meant to be the other two quicks?

Pakistan has plenty of 6 foot plus 90mph+ bowlers. Pick 4-5 of them for the tour down under.

ehsan adil, rahit ali, hasan ali?

Will that mean South Punjab will have to draft in a replacement ?

He’s 34 - why not just call a spade a spade and retire from red ball cricket instead of masquerading behind this “indefinite break” nonsense. It’s like a 100 year old man stating that he’s taking an indefinite break from marathon running.

"Break" bcz didnt want to take the abuse tht M.Aaamir got... didnt expect him to be selected anywayz..

Wahab is being too choosy he is not as young as Amir or good.
I think this could mean retirement for him....

I think Pakistan is banking on Nasim Shah Hasnain and Haris Rauf to come good during Quaid e Azam Trophy.

Which tells that PCB or the team management hasn’t thought and planned well about the tour of Down Under...

He's always super motivated to play well in tournaments but performs poorly in bilaterals. Since watching him from 2011, his performances went downhill when he got mauled by Kohli in 2012 but he only tends to do extremely well when somebody ruffles his feathers, it's as if he wants to smash your body into bitesize pieces and that's the type of player you want in your team; however his consistency is extremely poor in bilaterals as he doesn't seem to be that motivated to play. His speed might have slowed down now but the 2019 should hopefully be his last ODI WC, I wouldn't mind him playing in the T20 WC if his form is good but we have to hope his economy rate doesn't come to haunt us. For the T20 WC it would be best if we put in a wily and miserly spinner in his place who can bemuse teams.

We have absolutely no bowlers to bowl for the World Test Championship who are not newbies.Absolutely loving this long term planning and professionalism of PCB.

Pakistan Test bowling attack looks severely depleted (with both Mohd Amir and Wahab gone). Are we going to thrust Mohd Husnain in Test cricket? or we are going to go back to Rahat Ali & Junaid Khan?

Rahat Ali has been a long time Misbah Favorite. I prefer Junaid Over Rahat.
Too bad ...Mohd Irfan can't play tests, he would been deadly in Austalia.

Looks like no planning at all. But simply backward thinking. Going back to same old by bringing Misbah, Waqar and Sarfaraz.
Saeed Ajmal and Younis Khan must be thinking how did they missed out on Spin bowling coach and batting coach Positions? LOL

That would be a good strategy, Picking one or 2 out of Nasim Shah, Hasnain and Haris Rauf. But with Misbah at the helm get ready for the return of Rahat Ali and also Hasan Ali (in tests ).
