I remember watching him in the late 90s, and 2000, bowled with a lot of control, was tall but was not a flair player.

took abt 20 test wickets at 25 in 2000 with an e/r of about 2, then was dropped for the emerging kaneria and his test career was virtually over at 29.

kaneria was young, had flair and was a leggie with a quality googly, and at the time he seemed like he had a far higher ceiling.

always thought he had a role to play as a second spinner or backup but only played one more test after. pak pbly need an old school offie like him in the test team now.

Geoff Boycott used to say his grandmother is better than this guy but as u say his stats were awesome. He did particularly well in India when we drew the series.

I feel so yes I might be mistaken but I remember seeing him on a news segment I think he drives a taxi now

He is appropriately rated, not under-rated. He was a decent bowler, a classic off-spinner without much variety except for an arm ball. Nothing amazing though. I remember him getting hit around the park which I think lost us an ODI and I dont think he played much after that.

A very good thread.

I remember very clearly Arjuna Ranatunga at the time said that Arshad Khan is the best off spinner that he has ever seen. It did raise a few eyebrows at the time but you got to take Ranatunga’s word for it.

I really liked him specially in ODIs. Nice easy action, tall and very economical.

He shouldve played more He wasnt a flair player so maybe thats why he didnt have a long career but he was always reliable and offered steady control to the captain

Doesn’t have a batting average after nine tests!

He had really good basics for an off spinner with good repeatable action, nice torque he created, good revs on the ball and was accurate. Add to it his height which while underrated when we talk about spinners but, still very much advantageous.

In tests it was first Saqlain and then Danish Kaneria who took over allowing very limited opportunities for Arshad in red ball format. In ODIs as well he had the potential but, then with Pak's main reliance on Malik and Afridi for those spin overs alongside 4 pacers combination including Razzaq meant that Arshad had very limited opportunities in whteball cricket as well.

Possibly if he would have been in another era, he could have played more international cricket than he did.

Decent Test bowler. Actually even in ODIs , he was very difficult to score off. The bounce and accuracy meant that he was actually harder to score off than Saqlain.

But he didnt offer the same kind of wicket taking threat or score with the bat.

BCB has appointed former Pakistan off-spinner Arshad Khan as the new spin-bowling coach for the national team.

Arshad, who played 9 Tests and 58 ODIs for Pakistan, will join as Bangladesh prepares for their home Test series against Zimbabwe starting April 20 in Sylhet.

The move is part of BCB's strategy to strengthen coaching staff ahead of long-term preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
